This past weekend my girlfriend and I went out to do some antique furntiure shopping and I somehow stumbled on a nice stash of records. Damn nice original records at that. Haven't bought anything in a long time since I'm trying to curb my spending, but couldn't resist since they were cheap-cheap and in excellent shape. Here's what I picked up and have been busy listening to this week.

  • Ashford & Simpson - Send It - LP contains "Bourgie Bourgie"
  • Ashford & Simpson - High Rise - LP
  • Average White Band - AWB - LP
  • Barretto - Eye of the Beholder - LP this is awesome
  • Madeline Bell - This Is One Girl - LP The famous backup vocalist with her own album.
  • Angela Bofill - Angie - LP Since Nicky and Marky have mentioned her I thought I'd take a chance and she has a voice. This is on GRP.
  • Angela Bofill - Teaser - LP She looks and sounds more like Sheena Easton on this.
  • Brother to Brother - Let Your Mind Be Free - LP
  • Brothers Johnson - Right On Time - LP contains "Strawberry Letter"
  • Jocelyn Brown - Somebody Else's Guy (6:28) - 12" This has the long version and not the 3 min one.
  • The Jimmy Castor Bunch - E Man Groovin' - LP Funkydude would love this one. This is great.
  • Change - Miracles - LP contains "Paradise"
  • Chic - Risque - LP w/ "Good Times"
  • Linda Clifford - I'm Yours - LP w/ "Shoot Your Best Shot"
  • Comateens - Comateens - LP Their earliest release on NY's Whale label-pretty rare.
  • Faith, Hope & Charity - Faith Hope & Charity - LP w/ "To Each His Own" produced by Van McCoy.
  • Faith, Hope & Charity - Life Goes On - 12"
  • Fania All Stars - Delicate and Jumpy - LP Sammy will get into this one.
  • First Choice - Let Us Entertain You - LP from 1976 on Warner bros.
  • Formula V - Dance All Night - 12"
  • Human League - Fascination! - LP remixes
  • Joe Jackson - Body and Soul - LP w/ "Can't Get What You Want"
  • Eddie Kendricks - Goin' Up In Smoke - LP The Philly sound on Motown. This is great!
  • Kleeer - License to Dream - LP another copy for backup of this great album. w/ "Get Tough"
  • Lene Lovich - Stateless - LP on black vinyl Stiff
  • Teena Marie - Wild and Peaceful - LP produced by Rick James
  • Teena Marie - It Must Be Magic - LP Love the title track
  • Van McCoy - The Real McCoy - LP w/ the "Get On Down and Party" female voice that everyone's always after.
  • Oingo Boingo - Only A Lad - 10" EP 80s New Wave
  • The O'Jays - Message In Our Music - LP Classic Philly
  • Rufus - Rags To Rufus - LP w/ "Tell Me Something Good"
  • Fufus & Chaka - Masterjam - LP w/ 'Do You Love What You Feel"
  • Edwin Starr - I Just Wanna Do My Thing - 12"
  • Talk Talk - Talk Talk - LP Always liked these guys.
  • Kim Wilde - Kim Wilde - LP w/ "Kids In America"

Thanks for the tip Bernie, if I ever see this LP around I won't hesitate to buy it as I'm a big Jimmy Castor Bunch fan. 2 Years ago I bought Jimmy Castor's 1977 "Maximum Stimulation" LP and it has two killer guitar disco/funk tracks "E-Man Partay" and "Maximum Stimulation", now that's what I call guitar funk .

Well, I know you mean "Rufus & Ckaka," Bernie and I have always loved the cut on this LP titled "Any Love." A DJ at a local club used to play this, but to the best of my knowledge he played the LP. Does anyone know if a 12-inch was ever released?

Dear Jeff H!
There is a 12"-Release of "Any Love" with
the same length as the AlbumVersion, but
certainly more dynamic.

British trip-hopsters Massive Attack recorded a cover of Any Love back in 1991. I think it was the b-side of their single Daydreaming.
I's not the same without Chaka's voice but it's interesting enough. Great song!

Hey Bernie. That Teena Marie album, It Must Be Magic, is an excellent album in all respects. Yea I have it. I also love the Brothers Johnson's "Right On Time" album. This to me is perhaps their best album. I could play the whole thing and enjoy every track. I have the cd version.

Bernie:

First of all, what a great buy all around. I've been on a search for that Brothers Johnson LP since my question regarding 'Strawberry Letter 23' and now you found it. As for Angela Bofill, my favorite female vocalist ever, the 'Angie' LP, her debut, is a great album featuring the fantastic 'Under the moon, over the sky'. The other Angela Bofill LP you should be on the lookout for is 'Angel of the night'; Probably her best work. Yes you know I'm digging the Fania purchase. Overall, sounds like you stumbled onto a goldmine. Enjoy.

Easy,

Sam "ALL JAM"

Sounds like you had a great day out there, Bernie! What a treasure trove of finds!!

You had better luck than I did ...Funnily enough my wife and I were out antiques hunting a couple of weeks ago, and I found a fantastic second-hand record shop in a back alley. Just as I was about to dive in there , the guy told he he was closing the shop, and he went and locked the door!! I was gutted

Which Brother To Brother LP was that one - did it have "Take A Chance On You" on it? I think would be pretty collectable here in England.

That Rufus LP is a great find. I remember picking up the 12-inch of Do You Love What You Feel in a boot sale (selling out of car trunks) about 2 years ago and paying 50p (75 cents) for it. In good condition too!! It was in a picture sleeve, and had a very tasty picture of Chaka on the cover!!

Poor old Sammy. I hope you find that record... I'll look out for it in England for you, and if I can find it - it's yours!!

Where are you going to find the time to listen to all that lot, Bernie?? I have bought 2 or 3 Cds and a couple of LPs in the past month, and I STILL haven't gotten around to playing all of them yet!!

Take care and put your feet up!!!

bernie,
now that's the kind of list i like to see! varied and well rounded! from ashford & simpson and first choice all the way to talk talk and oingo boingo. wish others could open up and enjoy music styles from other categories. you have no restrictions on what you'll listen to. if it's good, it's good.

But California Mike,

WE DO LISTEN TO ALL TYPES OF MUSIC, at least I do.

Today I have Clarence Carter, Beck ("Midnight Vultures"), Shawn Colvin, Camille Yarbrough (The basis of Fatboy Slim's "Praise You"), and the soundtrack to "Anywhere But Here" with k.d. lang, Carly Simon, Sarah McLachlan, and other chicks.

So, you can discuss other types of music here.

We most certainly discuss them here. I remember topics on Rock goes disco, favorite non-disco songs, and many jazz/fusion related discussion threads.

I myself can get quite passionate about Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Steely Dan, Diane Krall, Toots Thielemans, big band music such as Glenn Miller, traditional samba/bossa such as Atrud, Gilberto, Stan Getz, and others as well as 'todays' soulful house (most recent love affairs with Urban Blues Project releases, and Simon Grey's "One"). I feel similarly passionate about remix 'collectives' such as Def Mix, Masters At Work, Jazz 'n' Groove and GTS and Japanese dance/r&b (Misia, Towa Tei, Utada Hikaru, Moet, etc.).

My motto is indeed: if I like it I'll listen to it/buy it. Which artists was it that released an album that was called "Listen without prejudice"? I remember doing that and not buying it as I did not like it.

Maarten,

"Listen Without Prejudice" was by the Restroom Arrested George Michael. Not a big fave of mine either.

Bernie,

I know, like and have most of the stuff on your list. I just recently acquired both that same Faith Hope & Charity LP and that same 12". I'm looking for their 12" of "Don't Pity Me". Only Mr. Keefe has that one. And he ain't partin' with it!!!!!

Hey Maarten.
I see Diane Krall on your playlist. I've seen her quite often on various audiophile playlist. Can you give a brotha the 411 (info) on her music?
