I know Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" is one of the best-selling singles of all time, but I don't know if it was the best chart performer.

just a guess...but I'd have to go with a MADONNA record... so from the ones listed, I'd pick VOGUE as being the biggest chart hit (second choice: PAPA DON'T PREACH) :-? :o

Yikes!!! If Madonna isn't the best-selling artist on SIRE RECORDS --I'll do penance by listening to "COCOMOTION" repeatedly for an hour!!! :P  :x

Madonna recently tied Elvis Presley for the most Top 10 singles...

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - As Madonna's "Hung Up" jumps seven places to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, the pop icon matches Elvis Presley's tally for top-10 hits -- 36, the most for any artist in the rock era.

Madonna already held the record for the most top 40 hits by a solo female artist; she continues in first place as "Hung Up" becomes her 45th top 40 hit, out of 51 chart entries. Aretha Franklin is in second place with 43.

Madonna's definitely sold more albums... but wasn't the single already in decline by the time she came around? Tainted Love was massive, and I think it was one of those songs that a lot of folks bought only the single of, both because the 12" version kicked ass, and because it was nothing like any of the other songs on the album. Soft Cell did not have any other significant hits in North America (and they were only on Sire in the US anyway).

"Hey! Like A Virgin..touched (#1) for a very long time!"

Actually for six weeks in 1984! (Who'da thought she'd last this long? ) Although Graham might be right....Tainted Love did chart for a whopping 43 weeks!!!

Sorry Lord , but the choices were culmed from songs that actually made SIRE's Top 30 of all time ........hence nay to Yaz who weren't in that situation ....

Madonna btw ... can boast eighteen of SIRE's TOP 30 songs ( as of 1991)

These are those found within the Top Ten :

1) LIKE A VIRGIN
3) VOGUE
4) OPEN YOUR HEART
5) LIKE A PRAYER
6) LIVE TO TELL
10) PAPA DON'T PREACH

Actually, I didn't know of that list!

I'll say that Madonna songs took up at least a quarter of those, listings anyway!
