Default Sarah Dash "Sinner Man"....breakdown

Spotted the 12" in a store a few days ago and was thinking...

I like the song but have never gotten around the fact that the first 2/3 of this song are sort of dated. A bit generic-disco and nothing too stellar in terms of lyrics (IMHO!!!). The breakdown where Sarah starts to wail and the music breaks "ooh...holding me! touching me!...sinner man...oooh ooooh ooh"...is the best part of the song. I'd love to hear the song sort of taken as an instrumental with the latter portion thrown in throughout. Or perhaps sampling it as the basis for a new house tune? An idea I'd love to hear people's opinions on...

Nothing too stellar??? Sarah belts out a scorcher of a classic!

"I said No, I said No, I said No No No...but it doesn't do me any good"....man, I wish wish wish vocalists sang with such intensity and fire these days instead of the vocal acrobats that so many try.

Having said that however (calming down), I'd definitely put a house tune sampling the part of the song you're talking about at the top of my club's playlist. I'm thinking of something close to what the Freemasons did with Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby'. My only problem with these sampled tunes is that I really want the rest of the song. 'Love On My Mind' has been a huge hit these past few months but I'm trying to work in the original in my set which doesn't quite work because of the major sound differences.

Hee hee...sorry to have fired you up. perhaps I should recant? I don't think Sarah's vocals are the problem, it's just some of the lyrics make me cringe (I have never been one for girl-done-wrong-disco) and the production doesn't stand up against her voice. Then again, I have ONLY heard the song on my home system.

On the Freemasons note, the Back To Philly Mix of said song uses more of the original (but still not enough!!!! ha ha)...everytime they sing the chorus, I want to fill in the rest. The string/horn arrangement on the original really held up well to updating though...the whole sound is austere (right word? clean and full might be better) & deep. The original is fairly slow and I can imagine having a hard time putting in a set.

Yes... the original of 'This Time Baby' needs to be sped up ridiculously so I have yet to try it live...

I love the lyrics of 'Sinner Man' but then I'm just the opposite to you... I enjoy women giving it to the men good in song. It's interesting to hear your idea though. I haven't taken the time to figure out how to digitally remix or re-vamp my treasured dance music although many times, I wish I could. There are far too many butchered tracks being released.

I happen to love this track too.. I love the lyrics and the theme, "daa-aamn you sinner man!" I wish Sarah did more disco, her albums, while I like them, seemed to veer more towards standard MOR Ballads and lite R&B.. There was an interview with Tom Moulton online somewhere where he said this song was originally a slower, more R&B-ish type song before he got his hands on it.. I'd be interested to hear how much he changed it..
