Default Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - a Madge after midnight - Madonna

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Madonna has hit jackpot with a sample of Abba's Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - not quite a disco record of the 80's but one of Abba's more disco-esque offerings.

Looking forward to the album released in November - more samples of 80's disco sounds, including: Can You Feel It (Jacksons) and I Feel Love (Donna Summer).

A thousand thank yous to Benny and Bjorn for allowing this sample - it's ace!!!!

Can't wait for 'Hung Up' to top world-wide singles charts and the album to follow suit.

Hear it on www.madonna.com

As an ABBA collector for 25+ years, no one is more excited about this release than me :D The song is really good, just the thing Madonna needs since her last few releases have not faired as well. I have no doubt that it will be in the top 10. I too thank God that Björn & Benny allowed her to sample the original backing track.

Madonna is often referred to as Madge in the UK.

I hope you guys are talking about ESTHER. Wasn't that her new Kabbalala-name :o

Haven't heard the track yet, but is this recycling thing necessary?

The Abba-track stands on its own, you know. Can producers and songwriters come up with interesting new stuff? Top 40 becomes more and more a re-issue from the old charts but then without the panache :(

The other night I caught a piece of "Entertainment tonight" show (popular US show) and they did a retrospect piece on Disco with the usual Bee Gees, Summer, Irene Cara etc references, but they said that Disco was due for a come back :o :P especially because of the release of Madonna’s new album, which the show is already crediting with triggering a resurgence of Disco :o I never heard any of this until this show's piece.

PS: maybe related in a way to this Disco comeback ?, but Last night I saw a great performance by Al Green on Letterman doing a great song (?) off his new LP with a string section and all, it was a throw back to the soulful 70’s sounds that gave birth to what later came to be known as Disco, I wished I had taped it! :x

This song is fantastic.....especially if you're an Abba and Madonna fan (like me). I like the 3:23 version the best - I wish that version was longer. The Stewart Price (SDP) extended dub version is OK...... kind of spacey. I am disappointed in the Tracy Young mix - too choppy.

Mix,

Disco is coming back and it just isn't wishful thinking by fans like us. We already mentioned many times that more and more youngsters are fed up with today's music and I spot a new generation that is very curious about the sixties and seventies and are really discovering the sounds of those golden periods.

That was the point of my reply. I don't know Madonna's track yet but isn't it amazing that it, once again, is based on a classic dancerecord and that the youth seems to like it? So why don't they start asking for the old grooves and maybe then, recordfirms will re-release some of the high wanted old skool.

You know, those sharks don't mind what's on the market as long as they make good profits.

Where is the time when recordfirms were selling songs and records and not UNITS (yuk and shame for the guy who invented that word).

And BTW, hold on for Wilma and be safe!

I was wondering about that whole 'Disco comeback' thing ET talked about. Isn't it about 16 years too late? I remember disco and the Bee Gees being such dirty words during the 80's. But then around '90, 70's dance/disco started getting more airplay. That's when songs like Ring My Bell and Le Freak were played constantly. Soon after you also had house artists sampling chunks of disco tunes like 'The Bomb' by The Bucketheads sampling Chicago's 'Streetplayer' and 'Disco's Revenge' by Gusto sampling Harvey Mason's 'Groovin You'.

Madonna's remix/remake is great, but disco cameback years ago I'm afraid. :)

I think Letterman repeats every so often to give him and Paul Schaffer a break, so it might get shown again. Was the album Al Green promoting the one he released last year? That one sounded totally like his old Hi Records days.

If you dig seeing Al Green singing live, there's DVD compilation of old Kenny Rogers and First Edition variety show performances. I forget the actual name of it. Al Green does 'Let's Stay Together' and 'You Oughta Be With Me'. His voice brings chills. Too bad the mostly white audience just sat there, looking bored out of their minds. But hey, that was '72.

That same DVD also has Billy Preston doing Outta Space, but it's mimed to the studio recording. The cool thing about that performance is that I believe it's the Brothers Johnson backing him up (at least, it looks like them).

I agree, Disco came back about 12 years ago. In fact in the Los Angeles area we have a radio station that has a 6 hour long 'Disco Saturday Night' each week. It's been on the air now for 10 years. They now even do a 'Disco lunch hour' each day. It's still very popular, but I don't think it's ready to make acomeback again.

The 80's were supposed to make a comeback a few years ago, but that fizzled out rather quickly.

80's music still seems too recent. Perhaps most of the music from that decade, and the 90's, are just not memorable like the decades that preceded? The 50's came back in the early 70's; The 60's came back in the 80's as 'golden oldies'; and the 70's came back during the 90's as retro. I think the explosion in the interest in disco was partially due to the music being uncool for so long. Also, house music was pretty big in the 90's, and that was the grandchild of disco. I guess it'll be another decade before there's an explosion of interest in all things 80's.

Well ET's announcements came out of left field, they left me wondering what did I missed in the last couple of months?

But I think they mean new music/production with a Disco beat, not original retro stuff.

I guess because of the different remixes it is available as single cd , right? The only place locally I know of where to get those is at Virgin Records (are they still around?), Big Box retailers don't carry them AFAIK any more.

This was a new show, so it is probably a new CD, but since it took me by surprise I didn't write the name of the CD or song  I usually try to tape this performances and watch many times 8) I need a TiVO!

Al Green was in concert here at the Indian Casino in August. The ad said he'd be performing his 70's hits and new music from his new album. I was too casual in getting my ticket .When I walked up to the window the woman there said "Sir, that show has been sold out for two weeks ..."

I do not think DISCO/DANCE music will ever completely take over the mainstream again to the point where everybody is going to want to dance at the club. One or two dance oriented cd's on the pop charts does not mean that it has made a complete comeback. There was more of a pop comeback of DISCO/DANCE music back in the mid 1990's than there is right now. Do any of you remember stuff like LA BOUCHE, REAL McCOY, DAFT PUNK etc...???

I don't think it ever went away. It just isn't saturating our senses like it did in the 70's. Remember a few years ago Kylie Minogue's monster hit 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'?
