I’m deejaying in New York on Friday October 21st at the launch party for the US release of the Credit To The Edit album, which also doubles-up with the 2nd anniversary of Refuse!, who are hosting the night. Here are the full details:

In the basement with the bone shaking FUNKTION ONE SOUNDSYSTEM...

Amazingly this is my first time in New York. I say amazingly because this is a city that’s had so much influence on me, especially the early 80’s period, when labels like Prelude, West End, Sugarhill, Tommy Boy, Streetwise, Emergency, Sam, Becket and Profile dominated my playlist. At the time I was simply responding to the influx of truly extraordinary dance music that was arriving in the UK on import from NYC during this highly innovative era – it was only later that we understood what was happening over there and I came to realise that I had been combining both the type of music that was being played in the now legendary Paradise Garage, alongside the emerging Electro / Hip Hop of the Bronx.

It was a wonderful hybrid age, which set the foundations for the oncoming House, Hip Hop and Techno movements in the UK, and now, in a what goes around comes around sort of way, a younger generation of dance music enthusiasts are discovering (and devouring) the music of this period.

Having retired from deejaying in 1984, it was this re-evaluation of the early 80’s and its pivotal role in the evolution of dance music and club culture, that brought me back into the clubs two decades on. And now I finally get to experience the city that made such a huge impression on what I did, and what I still do today.

So much looking forward to this!

Finally got my Visa through today. Was beginning to worry that it wouldn't be sorted in time.

Had to go to the US Embassy in London on Monday at the ungodly hour (for me) of 8am. Thought I'd walk out with Visa in hand, but they send it on to you. Was told it should be within 5 days, which was a bit of a worry as my flight is on Thursday.

Very relieved when it actually arrived this morning.

Lots of jumping through hoops to get it sorted, but I can now travel to the US to DJ for the next three years 8)

Back home after a full-on weekend. Absolutely wasted (apart from suffering from severe sleep deprivation, I’m also full of flu), but well happy with the way everything panned out – especially after the whole rigmarole of not being sure whether I’d get my Visa in time.

New York was brilliant , top night at APT, and really good to put faces to so many names (including lots of people from the various forums).

Big thanks to James Friedman and Alec DeRuggiero for bringing me over. Great to meet up with all the DJ’s - Dan Selzer, Joe Pappawheelie. Rob Uptight and Jeremy Campbell from AllDisco, Christine Renee, Dirty Dirty Dietz and Carlos Arias. Also got to hook-up once more with Andrew Mason (Monk-One), who brought me copies of the new Wax Poetics, which includes my 12x12, along with a whole heap of great articles (as always).

Also got to meet some true veterans of the New York scene – Barry Lederer and Peter Reyes – which was a real pleasure.

Ended up being asked to deejay on the Saturday as well, with a handful of further NYC dates in the pipeline, making this a very productive trip. Hope to return around March / April.

Didn’t have time to fit in any record shopping, but came back with a bag full of new tunes thanks to Monk-One, Carlos and Morgan Geist.

Felt totally at home throughout the weekend, as though I’d been there many times before. Needless to say that I’m looking forward to next time.

I'm listening to your recording from your night in NYC and all I can say is GREAT! I'm up to the second disc and am extremely impressed with your edits and musical selection. I'm sure the crowd was loving it and wish I could have driven up to hear you. Fantastic set bro!
