In anticipation of Paul's next Artist of the week, inspired by Keefe's posting of the release of Arista's remastered Phyllis, I thought I might post my favorite Phyllis tracks.

I made 2 tapes of my choices for a "Best of Phyllis" for a friend in Minneapolis after I visited and introduced him to some Phyllis CD's a few summers ago. I went through everything I had at the time and compiled the tapes as follows:

Tape 1: THE CLASSIC BALLADRY OF PHYLLIS HYMAN:

Side A:

1) HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY
2) SOMEONE TO LOVE
3) BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW (w/ Norman Connors)
4) I DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOU
5) LIVING IN CONFUSION
6) LIVING ALL ALONE
7) IN SEARCH OF MY HEART (w/McCoy Tyner)
HURRY UP THIS WAY AGAIN
9) GONNA MAKE CHANGES
10) SOMEWHERE IN MY LIFETIME
11) I'M TRULY YOURS

Side B:

1) IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD ("Sophisticated Ladies")
2) THE LOVE TOO GOOD TO LAST
3) THE ANSWER IS YOU
4) COMPLETE ME
5) FALLING STAR
6) NO ONE CAN LOVE YOU MORE
7) WHEN I GIVE MY LOVE (THIS TIME)
I FOUND LOVE
9) COME RIGHT OR NOT AT ALL
10) BE CAREFUL HOW YOU TREAT MY LOVE
11) PRIME OF MY LIFE
12) OLD FRIEND

TAPE 2:

MORE CLASSIC BALLADRY:

Side A:

1) WHAT YOU WON'T DO FOR LOVE
2) WE BOTH NEED EACH OTHER (w/ Michael Henderson)
3) DON'T TELL ME, TELL HER
4) LET SOMEBODY LOVE YOU
5) WHEN YOU GET RIGHT DOWN TO IT
6) WALK AWAY
7) CAN'T WE FALL IN LOVE AGAIN ( w/ Michael Henderson)
JUST 25 MILES TO ANYWHERE
9) LIVING INSIDE YOUR LOVE
10) SET A LITTLE TRAP
11) KISS YOU ALL OVER
12) JUST YOU AND ME
13) CHILDREN OF THE WORLD

Side B: THE DANCE GROOVES OF PHYLLIS HYMAN

1) LOVING YOU, LOSING YOU
2) YOUR MOVE, MY HEART
3) WE SHOULD BE LOVERS
4) DON'T WANNA CHANGE THE WORLD
5) FOREVER WITH YOU
6) ONE THING ON MY MIND
7) RIDING THE TIGER
TONIGHT-YOU AND ME
9) UNDER YOUR SPELL
10) I AIN'T ASKING
11) YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME

As I remember, I had a couple uptempo songs that I didn't have space for. And I have subsequently acquired "One On One" with some of her collaborations with other artists and an early 12" mix by Tom Moulton of "Leavin" the Good Life Behind". That cut would certainly be added to the tape, if I had to do it over again.

So those were my picks; did I leave any gems out?

THIS TOO SHALL PASS
GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON TO STAY
AIN'T YOU HAD ENOUGH LOVE
ONE THING ON MY MIND

There's very little this lady has touched that I can't get into one way or another.

Just one question: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T ARISTA 12" "TONIGHT YOU AND ME"! Great, great dance track.

Nicky,

The 12" Remixed extended version of "Tonight-You and Me" is on the 2 CD set "The Legacy Of Phyllis Hyman". The extended "You Know How To Love Me" is also there. In fact, there are no edits on this compilation, to the best of my knowledge.

I have it on vinyl also--BUT, it's an import. So, I guess, you're saying Arista didn't release it domestically on a 12"?

After spending an extended weekend with some former Aloha Records friends, I'm back! (Mark, Karen says Hi!)

Nicky, Mark is correct that Arista did release an extended promotional 12 inch single of "Tonight You and Me," which is indeed available on the "Legacy of P.H."! The CD I sent you has this extended mix.

Thanks, Keefe. I didn't even realize it was extended. Now, to go back and listen.

I wish I had seen this "Legacy" CD before I bought all these others after her passing. This would mean purchasing the same songs for what, the FOURTH time? I'll probably do it just to get the long version of Tonight..."
