Default Gwen Guthrie track

A friend of mine has given me a 12" single by Gwen Guthrie called 7th heaven.. WOW ! What a superb track - I can`t stop playing it. I am not very familiar with this artist except for the obvious hits she had in the mid 80`s like "nothin goin on but the rent" & "they long to be (close to you"... I will definitely be searching out some more of her recordings... can anyone recommend some of her albums/singles ?

The 'Padlock' EP on Island. Larry Levan remixed. Hammered at the Paradise Garage, especially 'Should've been you' and 'Seventh heaven'.

Don't forget her Ultimate collection on cd by Hipo/Universal.
I also enjoyed her 1990 release with a slowed down version of Stephanie Mills' "Never knew love like this before."

Oh boy, have you missed out. I would suggest, that you try and get as many of her albums as you can. Because there are truly superb LP tracks, like "Joyriders", "Thrill Me", etc, which don't appear on the ultimate collection.

Her version of "Closer to you" was massive on the soul scene over here, about 19 years back...
Was it really that long ago? :-? Oh yes.

"Love In Moderation" and "Just For You", both from her 1984 LP should get a mention too.

Also, "Bye Bye Lover" from 1988 - sounds a bit like her take on the Bacherach song Buckaroo mentioned.

Ah the fabulous Gwen Guthrie. Very very missed.

1. Padlock (Larry Levan mix)
2. 7th heaven (Larry Levan and LP mix which is very different)
3. Younger than me (A sublime mid tempo ballad From the portrait lp)

4. It should'a been you (Larry/LP)
5. Stop holding back
6. Peeka boo (Full length 8+ minutes 12")
7. Peanut Butter
8. Hopscotch (Sly & Robbie 12" mix)
9. Thrill me.
10. Say yeah (Dub) by the Limit (Gwen sings the so many memories bit)

my fave ballad by Miss Guthrie is....

FOR YOU (WITH A MELODY TOO)

Be sure to check that one out. Highly recommended. :D :D

Also, don't forget she was a prolific songwriter for other performers; among her compositions were LOVE DON'T YOU GO THROUGH NO CHANGES ON ME (for Sister Sledge), THIS TIME I'LL BE SWEETER (recorded by both Roberta Flack & Angela Bofill) & SUPERNATURAL THING (for Ben E. King). All great records!!!!!

And Gwen sang background vocals on a whole lotta great records!!! She was extremely talented and underrated.

Neil, I'll check my trade 12"s, as I'm sure there's a coupla Gwen's tunes hidden away.

Hopskotch is a great tune, as is the Boiler House (if my memory serves me right) remix of nothing going on....
