Sublime re-mix of For you (with a melody too) 5mins 12 on b side of UK Peek-a-boo. Didn't know know Hopscotch went for that much, I wonder how much the Larry Levan mix with the dub goes for? (Mind you I wouldn't part with any of my Guthrie's) She was indeed a much underated singer/song writer, and even had to put up with backing Madonna when she was still a nobody. Gwens vocals can be heard very clearly in the background of Madges Lucky star. Would have loved to have been at the closing night of the Garage when she performed. I'm still sad that she is no longer with us, maybe one day she will get the full recognition she deserved outside of 'Rent' & 'Close'

The Padlock EP was hot! The Seventh Heaven mix was second best to the Peech Boys - Don't Make Me Wait. It should've been you - 12" Promo w/Instrumental is the one to find.... Larry Levan signed my copy of Padlock EP in Vinyl Mania Records on 4/19/85. I've cherished that signature as a prize from my collection. |

I love the -82 album Gwen Guthrie. And Hopscotch. And Peanut butter. I have an -85 album (don't remember the name) that I don't think is worth the time listening to.

Here's what I wrote about Gwen's "Lifeline" album & my fave G.G. song "What Would I Do Without You?" at rateyour music.com... This album by Gwen Guthrie is worth having just for the song "What Would I Do Without You?". This song (written by her) could melt the hardest heart with one listen. It appeals to the romantic in all of us, even if those romantic notions have been buried or forgotten with a jaded heart. None of the uptempo tunes are as good as her biggest hit "Ain't Nothing Goin' On But The Rent" (even though she tries with "Rockin' Chair"), but the album maintains a pretty decent groove. One interesting song on the album is "Can't Love You Tonight" (also written by Gwen) where she proclaims, "...Can't Love you tonight. Love Is No Longer Free. I'm Too Young To Die. I don't want no AIDS or Herpes..." (Sadly, Gwen Guthrie did die of uterine cancer on February 4, 1999). Rated: ***

for "Peanut Butter", one of the greatest lost-in-the-shuffle tracks of her career, which had a lot of them. BTW - Did y'all know she wrote "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me" (yet another song awaiting a killer cover version).....
