| Hi all. I was wondering what do you's think are the two most significant years of disco music in the 70s? I personally pick 1973 and 1977. 1973: The year that Philly soul style disco really kicked off which gave dance music a more true disco sound to my opinion with the strings, horns, percussions etc. but most notibly the strings. Good examples are: Trammps - Love Epidemic, Where Do We Go From Here MFSB - TSOP Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - The Love I Lost, Bad Luck (though released 1975 I've heard it was recorded around this period from someone in the forum) And other songs which I'm not sure go under the Philadelphia label but have the style: Ultra High Frequency - We're On The Right Track First Choice - Armed & Extremely Dangerous Brothers Guiding Light - Getting Together Executive Suite - When The Fuel Runs Out Intruders - I'll Always Love My Mama Ironically in that year Kraftwerk recorded a real high tech techno style song called "Kristallo" from their "Ralf Und Florian" album which used sequencers which gave a technofied sound which is used in techno songs done in more recent years. That song sounds way ahead of its time, I know someone said in here a long while back Kraftwerk rely on gimmicks, but I have to say they are geniouses in pioneering with high tech electronic music. 1977: As discussed in one of my recent topics is the year electronic Eurodisco really started to kick off which gave that distinct modernistic techno sound done from sequencers. Examples being: Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity (the whole album) Cerrone - Supernature Rinder & Lewis - Lust/Envy/Gluttony Baciotti - Black Jack Donna Summer - I Feel Love/Now I Need You/Working The Midnight Shift/Queen For A Day Kebekelektrik - War Dance La Belle Epoque - Black Is Black (14 minute version) Munich Machine - Get On The Funk Train ORS - Moonboots Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express (the whole album) __________________________________________________ ___ AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!! | I would have to say 1973 and 1974. Blue magic released "Welcome to the club", Ohio Players and Barry White were in full force. The 3rd most influential year I would say was 1982. It may be a shock to some, but 1982 proved that proto funk and proto disco could still sell in Black/soul markets. Despite a decline in dance music on the Top 40 charts, groups like Maze, T-Connection, Unlimited Touch, and Rene and Angela had a core group of fans that hadn't jumped ship. |

| Great Topic! I say around the mid-70's when the music wasn't labeled as Disco. Not that theres anything wrong with that. Like "Rock the Boat" , "More More, More", "Love's Theme", "Roller-Coaster" (my personal favorite), Abba, etc.... |

| I agree that 1973 is a very significant year (a common year when 'disco' started) for these reasons: 1) Rolling Stone had a mini-story on the new dance scene (September 1973 [I believe]) and made an accurate description as what disco would become. 2) "Soul Makossa" by Manu DiBango is sometimes mentioned as the first "disco-pop" hit in the United States (#35 in July 1973). 3) The new sounds in Philadelphia and Miami helped started the disco movement in the United States. 4) It was time for disco to go mainstream whether it wanted to or not. It was time for dancing to get back to the floor since "The Twist" a decade earlier. As far as the second significant year it is really a toss-up between 1978 (when disco dominated music in charts, sales, etc.) or 1980 (when disco had to regroup after the 'disco demolition' in 1979 in Chicago). |
