Ok, after the neverending year-end wrap up to 1975 that seemed to rival the combined time of the farewell tours of Cher, Judy Garland and The Judds!!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:
.... it's time to start the next the next phase.

For newbies to this site, the charts from 10/26/74 (the FIRST) through 12/27/75 are contained in another thread in this section.

The last chart (12/27/75) was typed on April 17, 2005 and since then it's taken 4 months to type an additonal 9 pages of recaps, trivia and year-end countdowns, culminating in the entire 461 titles that charted on the Billboard Disco charts from 10/26/74 - 12/27/75. I was exhausted and, to tell the truth, still am...however, I'm gonna continue...but-- I can't promise a new chart every week--.... we'll see. :-?

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???

Well, it's the week after Christmas, 1975. The chart is rather stagnant and will remain so for another week. Then new product starts flowing and it gets interesting.

B strangely has not charted MIGHTY HIGH this week. E is charting a different Mighty Clouds of Joy title...so ostensibly the hottest record -- #1 in NYC clubs...only merits a #7 placement here. It gets better next week...but MIGHTY HIGH is another record that is getting shafted by odd charting reportage.

The Top 10 rearranges itself and adds only ELUSIVE at #10; BABY FACE drops out of the top 10.
Longest charting record is Donna Summer's LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY still being charted on E.

Next week the Billboard Top 50 for 1975 is published squeezing the 6 charts down to 9 items apiece (apparently, 10 wouldn't fit!!!) so we get 6 Top 9's!!! --greatly reducing the titles down to only a mere 23!!!! The following week we're up to 51 titles!!! That's a whole lottta typin'!!!!!

(NEW YORK) Without a doubt, the music of Philadelphia is the strongest influence on the disco market these days. A quick glimpse : The O'Jay's with their recent No. 1 disco audience response record in "I LOVE MUSIC" (PIR); the Mighty Clouds of Joy's current No. 1 disco record "MIGHTY HIGH" (ABC). which was mixed at Sigma Sound; Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the Salsoul Orchestra and Archie Bell & the Drells all with songs on the disco listing; and Billy Paul and Dee Dee Sharp both with records fast gaining acceptance at the club level. Indications are, too, that the city's musical influence is going to continue well through 1976.

A new City Limits LP is coming, as well as one from Eddie Kendricks, produced by (Norman) Harris Machine. The album has seven strong disco cuts, including "ON MY WAY" and "ALL MY LOVE," both very melodic and uptempo; "IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT," (4:09) in length and with a good rhythm break; "HE'S A FRIEND" and "CHAINS," uptempo and pop oriented; I WON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER," Motownish; and GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT, featuring the Hustle sound. Overall, the album stacks up as one of the strongest commercial efforts from Kendricks (says "Hendricks") :P to date, and one wouldn't be surprised if it agured a quick return to the studios for more of the same.

Buddah, reportedly, is getting heavily into the disco flow, especially with its new 12-inch disco disk. The label is rush-releasing "MERRY-GO-ROUND" by Philadelphia's Monday After this week, while next week Andrea True's "MORE, MORE, MORE" is scheduled to ship.

The latter disk has quite a different sound in that it has more of an import feel (from France or Germany, say) than what you'd expect. The sides were cut in Jamaica, and their strong sensuality should have strong appeal to spinners.

Hey thommy,

I don't think the regional Billboard city charts are printed anywhere on the net. :-? The problem with the Whitburn book's inability to sythesize the early Billboard charts into a cohesive whole led me to this project. I too was disappointed at all the titles left out of his book; however I understand the problem with the way the info was reported. Each chart had it's own personality and flaws--which I've tried to reflect here --especially in my year-end wrapup of each chart's top titles back on the other thread.

In September of 1976, the 16 city charts are published along with one master "national" Top 30-40...(then expands to more later.) I'm in a quandry as to how to continue this when that happens--but I may do so. It's just the sheer volume of info--16 individual charts with 15 items apiece!!! That's a whole lotta info to compile!!! I've thought about just picking 6 city charts to keep it consistent with the first 8 months of the year--so I could do a year-end wrap-up again. That's probably what I'll do...but I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm only up to April and Miss Ross is vying for number 1 with Miss Summer!!! Now that's a great time in disco history with Vicki Sue Robinson, Andrea True, Melba Moore, Ecstasy, Passion & Pain and the Trammps all vying with Miss Ross & Miss Summer for the top spot on the charts!!! Stay tuned.

Caveat: This week Billboard published it's Top 50 New York Disco Records list of 1975...so this cut down on the space. We get the 6 charts but each is reduced from the normal 15 items apiece down to 9 apiece!!! (I guess 10 was just 1 too many!!!) :roll:

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

It's a truncated ( that means shortened) :P chart due to space limitations this week...so it's hard to really analyze. But, I'll try. First off Mighty High finally gets it's #1 ranking due to the 6 charts finally aligning in it's favor for the first and last time. Like Fly, Robin, Fly and Love To Love you Baby before it, it will be robbed of a long run at #1 due to odd chart reporting. Next week chart B drops it again.....

For the first time, by fluke, we have a #2 record by the same artist as the #1. Mighty Clouds of Joy's Everything Is Love is bundled with Mighty High on all the NYC charts, so it moves up for one week in the Top 10...down to #11 again next week!!! Also, LA has started charting Mighty High bundled along with another LP cut Standing On The Real Side-- which it actually lists first.

B & C bring back I Love Music so it moves back up from # 8 last week to #4. D drops it this week.

D also drops Biddu Orchestra; C drops Penny McLean; and in a very strange occurrence A drops Salsoul Orchestra while it is still charting on all 3 NYC retailers!!! A always hangs onto the hits longer than the retailers--but not this time!!! (Well, actually, it probably just ranked lower than #9....)

Next week we get the full 6 charts with 15 items apiece--the wild card this time is that the 6th guest city chart is from San Juan, Puerto Rico and they are several months behind NYC so a slew of titles that have been dropped return again for one more week!!!! :roll:

Next week we have a total of 51 items (15 debuts + 15 returns)

Among the artists debuting new titles are Atlanta Disco Band, The Disco Sound of Andre Gagnon, Isaac Hayes Movement, Linda G. Last week I listened to "Found At Last: Lost Disco from 1975" --made especially for me by Remicks with titles from the 1975 charts I didn't have!!!! &
"The Cleethorpes Story" -Brit cd with some gems.

On the "Found At Last" cd I'd requested "Elusive" by Babe Ruth --ironically the liner notes to "The Cleethorpes Story" (this was a club in Britain--"The Pier" Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire...) have a "P.S. On a second listen we had to exclude "Elusive"- Babe Ruth due to it being so horrible!!" :lol: :lol: :lol:

It's a compromise week. The obvious #1 on chart A & Record World is MIGHTY HIGH. But retailer B has dropped it and guest city chart F hasn't charted it...so it's down to #4 (43 points) here after only one week @ #1 (79 points last week).

Soooooooo....we get as the new #1: EXTRA, EXTRA (REad All About It) by virtue of being the record charted on the most charts--5 (with only 58 out of a possible 90 points). No records charted all 6 charts this week due to the use of the San Juan Chart--which is kinda dated in it's listings.

EXTRA, EXTRA... individually rates:

This is Ralph Carter's second big hit---last summer he peaked at #3 here with his remake of WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE; that record topped the NYC A list chart--but couldn't rise above #3 on the DCC cause LA chart E didn't list it. This time around LA is giving Ralphie some chart action.

The other big news is the RETURN of Fatback Band's SPANISH HUSTLE up to #5!!! (topping both chart B & C and placing # 6 on D). Next week chart A picks up on the trend and ranks it #14.

The Top 10 rearranges itself, adding only SPANISH HUSTLE and SMILE and dropping Salsoul Orchestra, EVERYTHING IS LOVE and unbundling I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT (from JUMP FOR JOY).

Longest running chart record is still Donna Summer with 16 weeks.

MORE, MORE, MORE is the most notable debut. It will be an absolute smash here. This is a truly terrific record that is one of my personal alltime faves. I bought the LP when it first came out and this has just one of the best "morning tempo" (around 106 bpm) grooves ever made. The "Tom Moulton mix" with the exuberant percussion and prominent woodblock is simply made to make yer feet wanna dance. :D :D :D

"Chef's Salad (The Sound Of Boston From Studio B)", an LP from Boston-based Cooking Records, has a strong disco cut in "The Sound Of Boston". The song features the sound of synthesizers and a good, happy beat. Overall, the album is a fine effort from the group The Gang Band and other local artists. A solid production job by Wayne Wadhams handles the musical diversity well.

Richie Pampanella, DJ at the Hippopotamus here, reports strong audience response to Carl Graves' "Heart Be Still" single on A&M.

UA has just released the Brass Construction album, and there are two strong disco cuts on it in "Movin'" and "Changin'". Both cuts are over eight minutes in length, and producer Jeff Lane has managed to capture his B.T. Express sound on both.

John Hodges, better known as Johnny Disco, is now spinning at San Francisco's City Club. For the past two years he worked the Mine Shaft.

Thanks to Oscar Rodriguez and Victor Ocasio for helping to compile this week's Puerto Rico listing. Both are DJs at the popular Abbey there.

Relic Rack, a Hackensack N.J. retailer, has become one of the top stores catering to local disco tastes. Like Downstairs Records here, Relic Rack was previously involved mainly with oldie product. The past year, though, has seen its disco involvement grow to the point where inventory includes a wide selection of imported as well as domestic dance disks.

The new First Choice album is now scheduled to ship sometime next month. The LP will be followed by a single release. . . . Available at the end of this month will be an album from Wing & A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps. It features an incredible "Al Jolson Medley". :oops: :P :evil:

Atlantic will also be releasing the "Lady Bump" album by Penny McLean.

A weaker reworking of the sound on "WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE " ..which I think was deserving of it's chart topping ( #3) .... it seems this one squeeked up there by its reasonably good performance on the most charts ...and 58 out of 90 points is not much of a smash .....it does make one pause to think though ... over the years on the Billboard chart ..how many songs scored just a thread better than another to rank at #1 ...while others were probably huge points ahead of the nearest contender ... wouldn't it be interesting to be able to review that data .....??

Maybe part of "EXTRA'S" success is ........... its pressing on those new fangled DJ copy 12" ers ...........

"SPANISH HUSTLE" 's incredible rebirth ... haven't seen anything like that before here on your charts either .................

Yeah, I was gonna do a tease about the next number one last week--but I forgot. :oops: :oops: :oops: Cause based on the 1/10/76 chart, Ralph Carter @ #9 didn't seem like an obvious candidate for #1. He will retain the #1 position next week also--and will be #2 on chart A...so it's not so much of a stretch of the imagination, although I checked Record World last night and "Extra, Extra" didn't even chart Top 10 there (I think it peaked at #13...or something like that). It's pleasant bubble gum/pop disco--but not a classic in my book.

"Spanish Hustle" was mentioned in the lower parts of the sales charts a couple times...then we had the Top 9 week and it disappeared...so it's return to #5 probably wouldn't have been such a surprise if we'd had the complete data for the 1/10/76 chart. This record is gonna go to the top also--am I givin' too much away???? :lol: :lol: :lol:

And, as for the debut recap...I figured that might be helpful to the readers as well as myself...cause these records come and go and come back again so often it's nice to have a definitive place to check out the actual debut date. When I did the year-end wrapup I made several pages for the same records and didn't realize the duplications until I started typing. It's hard to remember if it is actually a totally new title or if it slipped on and off a month earlier and is back for another go round. But this time, I'm doing the year-end recap stuff as I type each week--so all I'll have to do is add the columns up when we get to the end of the year....

"As Goldie of Goldie and the Gingerbreads, Genya Ravan toured with the early Rolling Stones; later she led an abominable horn band, Ten Wheel Drive. But in the late Seventies, she became enamored of New Wave rock and after producing the Dead Boys debut LP, made this heavy-breathing affair on her own. ("Urban Desire" ***)
It's more notable for street smarts, than anything approaching melody, but it's tough enough to get by--with a little help from such pals as Lou Reed.

"Perhaps some of the most patronizing music ever made is gathered here. ( "16 Greatest Hits") Far from being a phony successor to the golden age of Fifties rock 'n' roll, Avalon was a descendent of older pop stars like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The pseudo-swing of "Swingin' On a Rainbow" is closer to the awesome vapidity of Avalon's usual Christmas-chimes-and-drip-dry-orchestra sound than is the pseudo-rock of "Two Fools." It makes sense that Nashville first started to exert a strong pull on the mass audience around the time "Venus" was popular." (BT = ??)

It's a "middling" transitional week from the fading hits released in 1975 to the soon-to-be bonafide 1976 hits. The first of the latter, MORE, MORE, MORE leaps up from it's debut at #43 last week to #18 this week.

Out of a total of 90 maximum points, our #1 has only 60--a fair number but more of a compromise choice than an out & out smash. I've just completed a chart for May, 1976 where the #1 record has 86 out of 90 points!!! (You'll just have to wait and see what it is.) :P

EXTRA, EXTRA (Read All About It) rankings:
A=#2; B=#14; C=#3; D=#6; E=#10; F=#1

Ralph Carter claims #1 for second week by virtue of being the only record charted on all 6 charts. The closest contender, MIGHTY HIGH@ #2 with 56 points still tops the Billboard chart A and the national Record World chart--but chart B has dropped it, so it's stuck at #2 here.

SPANISH HUSTLE is charted on all 4 NYC charts - topping chart C for the second week. Next week, we'll see the power that the 3 NYC retail charts (B-C-D--"the Heatseekers") hold over this compilation consensus chart. They're ususally the first to chart records and the first to dump them. They can propel titles to the top here several weeks before they'd top the more conservative chart A and they can keep a record form retaining it's reign at the top of the charts as soon as they decide it's not "hot"anymore.

Of the debuts, Brass Construction's MOVIN' ON @ #23 has the greatest future. Eddie Kendricks gets one point for HE'S A FRIEND-- a track off an LP that has at least 3 other titles that will chart quite nicely here.

The Top 10 readmits 2 titles that slipped out of the Top 10 last week, records by the Salsoul & Biddu Orchestras. The O'Jays and Simon Said drop out of this week's Top 10--but the O'Jays bounce back next week--can't keep 'em down!!!

19 titles drop off after last weeks infusion of dated titles from the San Juan, Puerto Rico chart, so we drop from 51 items down to 43--note that half the chart--22 items are charting on only 1 chart.)

BRASS CONSTRUCTION (debuts @ #23)

(1975)[/includes the hit "Movin' " and five other one-word titles of disco length and style. Their music is accented by misconstrued images of urban origin.

II(**) is something of a departure; the vocals are more upfront, standardized in the Ohio Players fashion. III (**) and IV (**) continue in this vein. [Note: last week's missing Moulton column was sent to me today by shootyourshot...so I'll add that.)

(NEW YORK) The new Esther Phillips LP ships in two weeks. The title cut, "FOR ALL WE KNOW," comes out as a single this week, though. The album has seven cuts and they're all disco directed. "CARAVAN" and "GOIN' OUT OF MY HEAD" are the two strongest, while close behind are "UNFORGETTABLE," "FEVER, "and "PURE PERFECT LOVE." Another cut, "FOOLS RUSH IN" is similar to WHAT A DIFF'RENCE A DAY MAKES."

RCA has released "HEAVEN'S HERE ON EARTH" by Hudson County. The record is primarily an instrumental, but does have some vocals. The group sounds a lot like MFSB.

Bob Crewe, crowned King of the Discos last week by the Southern California Disco DJ Association, is hosting a party here at the Record Pool Thursday (22) from 6-9 pm. Crewe is in town for the Billboard Disco Forum, and wants to meet many of the local spinners on a one-to-one basis. All local players and anyone attending the convention are invited to the party.

While in town, Crewe will also be introducing the BCG's new "STREET TALK" single (20th Century). Word is that attempts are being made to have test pressings to give to all the spinners coming to the fete.

The song is medium tempo and, while mostly instrumental, does have vocal tracks. The LP version will run 9:22 and will be used on one side of a 12-inch pressing, while a long (6:08.) and short (4:22) single version will be used on the flip side.

This move marks the first time that both LP and single versions are included on the same 12-incher. The disk will also be serviced to radio stations.

Boston DJs and Nightfall magazine are presenting their best 1975 disco picks at the Mirage disco there Sunday (25) from 9pm to 2am. Among the categories are:

UA has just released "SHACK UP",a single by Banbarra. The group is out of Washington, D.C. As for the disk, it has a rhythm track which is similar to the Temps' "SHAKEY GROUND." A strong rhythm break is just one of the ingredients that go into making it a strong record.

Atlantic is rush-releasing Herbie Mann's bicentennial single offering in "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER."

Groove Merchant has released the new Joe Thomas "MASADA" LP. It's a very strong album with the title cut leading the way. Next in line come the cuts "GEMINI FLYIN' " and "POINCIANA." The sound is very mellow/melodic and is in the same vein as "LET'S DO THE LATIN HUSTLE."

"COLLAGE" is the name of the Eddie Drennon & B.B. S. Unlimited album on the Friends & Co. label. The LP features their hit song "LET'S DO THE LATIN HUSTLE" and a number of other cuts that have that same moody, lush, delicate sound.

and a new 3-cd set I found at Amoeba last Saturday from the Netherlands titled DISCO XPLOSION. I'll post the track listings later after I get the timings (not listed)--but this has a whole lotta obscure and juicy good stuff on it and it was cheap!!! ($15.98 for 3 cds!!!)
