| New chart (April 24, 1976) tomorrow. I've almost got it all done --except my little analysis part. ( Hey, I heard that!) :P This will complete the first four months of 1976--four more months to go in the present format--before the National chart takes over in September of '76. Then there's no more Downstairs, Colony & Melody Music Shop charts to bitch about!!! Their eccentricites and weird snubs and oddball inclusions do keep it interesting, however. The chart is much more "homogenous" once they are gone. Fairer maybe--but somewhat blander.... |

But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one. New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week. (Paging Andy Willliams!!!!) __________________________________________________ __ What's It All About, Mar-keeey??? (Is it just for old disco we live???..... Well, the almost-a-three-way-tie-syndrome is back again! This week, Donna Summer grabs #1 by one measly point (65) over competition from "usual suspects" The Trammps & Diana Ross with 64 points each. Now this is a “exception to the rule” week; I’ve previously boldly stated   :P that the rule is usually that the record on all 6 charts trumps the competition for #1. Not so this week. :-? :o  Donna is dumped by chart C and still grabs the top spot; The Trammps have across the board support from all 6 charts (their new LP is only charted on chart A this week), thereby trumping Miss Ross who has the same number of points, but is off chart B for the second week. Chart B (Downstairs Records) gives the 5th Dimension version of “Love Hangover” 4 points this week (#12)—those 4 points would have propelled Miss Ross back to the top for a 5th week—but B (unlike charts C & D which also chart the 5th Dimension version bundled with Miss Ross)—makes no mention of Miss Ross—so she’s #3. Got that??? :-? :o  DONNA SUMMER stats: A= #1; B= #6; C= N/C; D= #6; E= #1; F= #1 TRAMMPS stats: A= #2; B= #7; C= #1; D= #4; E= #5; F= #13 MISS ROSS stats: A= #3; B= N/C; C= #7; D= #2; E= #2; F= #2 In addition to the Trammps, one other record, Jackie Robinson’s “Movin Like A Superstar” is surprisingly also charted across the board for the first time—movin’ her up to #5 with 49 points. (I have to admit I don’t think I’ve ever heard this record!!!) (hint, hint...) The Top 10 almost stays virtually the same, allowing only the Trammps LP into it’s golden circle; “Where The Happy People Go” is a landmark disco LP which will dominate this chart for many weeks/ months to come, breaking previous records such as attaining the highest point score ever for a 6 chart week (86 out of a possible 90 points!!!) Just a warning—once it moves to the top—all challengers will fail to topple it until…..well let’s just say that the U.S. Bicentennial will have passed….. Aside from the Trammps LP, the splashiest debut is from the post-Ross Supremes (“I’m Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking”) @ #14, charting #5 (bundled with “High Energy”) on the lovin’-anything-from –Motown chart D. LA’s chart E also ranks the Supremes @ #7. Next week, strangely no NYC chart ranks it (the Motown lover at chart D musta had the week off????), so it suffers a setback, but will rise again in the following week (May 8.) and will be around for a very long run. THE BIG TEASE Next week –the first of May,-- ( anyone remember that Bee Gees tune?) [Another correction: I looked at the stats for next week's chart and realized that my #8 song had fewer points than I'd originally added up and was actually #11--so that changes it a bit; #9 goes to #8, #10 goes to #9 and #11 goes to #10 and what I thought was #8 drops to #11.] (oh Mary don't ask!!!) :P      Chart debuts include new titles from the currently charting LPs of Melba Moore and Strutt. Chart B flips Walter Murphy’s new single to the b-side and charts it (featuring a vocal by a newcomer destined for bigger things later on….) Obscurities from Force of Nature and Fire Bolts also chart along with a nice one from Jesse Green. Oh, and Crown Heights Affair return to the charts for the first time in 1976 after 2 big smashes in 1975 (“Dreaming A Dream” & “Every Beat Of My Heart”)……. Oh, and something from a group named uh……………. Double Exposure …..debuts with a special version mixed by a certain Walter Gibbons (the first time a remixer is mentioned on the charts). __________________________________________________ _______ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #78: 4/24/76 (Thanks to shootyourshot, as always, for providing me a copy of this column) (NEW YORK) Sam Records releases the Monster Orchestra album next week. The funkiest sounding cut on the LP is “I Can’t Stop,” which runs 5:25 and has a similar feel, horn and rhythm-wise, to something from Brass Construction. Other strong numbers on the disk are: “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” which is in the same vein (with the exception of strong horns) as the group’s “Night & Day” hit “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “You Do Something To Me” and “In The Still Of The Night,” with a nice Latin flavor. Overall, the LP is campy and fun and seems earmarked for solid club play. Being released this week is Ralph Carter’s “Young And In Love” LP (Mercury). In addition to his last two hits, the album has several strong cuts in “A Song In My Heart,” very up and melodic, “Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart,” a remake of the Supremes hit, “Higher & Higher,” another remake, “Love Doesn’t Grow On Trees,” [previously charted on the disco charts by Darren Green], the shortest but most melodic on the disk, and "As Long As There’s Love,” which was written by local DJ Alfie Davison [who later recorded “Who Is Gonna Love Me?”] The recently reactivated Cotillion label (Atlantic) has a very funky number as its first release Luther’s “It’s Good For The Soul (Part 1 & 2).” [Yes, that Luther…] There’s an exciting rhythm that makes you want to move, as well as a good drum break. Scepter has just released Jesse Green’s “Nice & Slow” (vocal & instrumental). The single, already available as an import from England, has added a flute and voice. [that’s what it says!!… so maybe it was just an instrumental originally?] The remix was supervised by the label’s Mel Cheren, who was responsible for the good break on the instrumental side. The sound is very reminiscent of Bobby Moore. Sonny Casella does it again by combining his two name artists Dooley Silverspoon & Jeanne Burton for a duet on “American Music.” The version will be a part 1 & 2, with Cotton using the release for its first 12-inch disco disk. The record will be available in two weeks. Motown has just released the new Supremes’ “High Energy” LP. There are two strong cuts: “I’m Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking, the strongest, and the title cut. Overall, it’s more of a concept record with the orchestra doing the first half and the girls doing the latter. [he’s referring to the “High Energy” track itself…not the whole LP] This LP should put the Supremes right back on the charts. Ronald Coles, disco promotion man for Atlantic, says the label is rush-releasing the German single “Treat Me Like A Woman” by Jackie Carter. There is a strong funky rhythm hook that makes it slightly different and more commercial to the German sound now so popular. BADDA is the name of the newly formed DJ association in San Francisco. It stands for Bay Area Disco DJ Assn. There are now 50 members and the address is BADDA, Fox Plaza, Room 908, San Francisco, CA, 94102. They’re asking for 50 LPs and 100 singles for disco releases. __________________________________________________ ___ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You NICE AND SLOW CATHEDRALS LIPSTICK LOVE CHANT HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL YOU’LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE MINE LOWDOWN TAKE A LITTLE TROUBLE-MAKER/ LOVE POWER & TEN PERCENT (which means the 1st commercially available 12” is about to be released!!!!!!!!) __________________________________________________ __ Today's chart was typed, while listening to: REMEMBER THE TROC [black... shhhhhhhh, someones got a copyright!!!!] PARTY --7 cds from the last Troc party (October 2005) flawlessly mixed by Jerry Bonham and totally capturing the spirit of the grand old Troc days!!! That being said, nice to see some attention paid to the flip. In the 70's Anthology, Mary says IGLMHDTW is a "club classic"; I disagree. "High Energy" is the record for me....way more interest in that song...how they felt about recording such a weird little number we may never know. |

| Markie-Is the Troc party Cd's the Soul Recharge set? I'm waiting for the October set to be released.A few thoughts: -Strutt/Time Moves On on Brunswick-A huge forgotten fave of mine-A funky organ driven cut -Jackie Robinson "Moving Like A Superstar"-when I first heard this in the clubs,I thought it was a new Donna Summer/Silver Convention cut Eurodisco, with an extended break on the promo 12" -Nice and Slow/Jesse Green- the version the jocks played WAS the 45 instrumental disco edit by Mel Cherren. It wasn't until the 12" mix was released that I heard the vocal combined with the instrumental Thanks for all your hard work Markie! | I finally heard Mighty High by the Mighty Clouds of Joy recently, what a great song! That soulful vocal just takes me there.. I can see why this was such a big hit in '76. I had only heard the more recent Gloria Gaynor version, which pales in comparison. Glad to see The Girls Managed to track down an mp3 of Jackie Robinson - Movin' Like A Superstar on account of the last chart posting.. This one's really starting to grow on me, reminds me a little bit of a Roberta Kelly record.. |

I think this was the song that helped guide disco in the right direction at the end of 1975 . The hustle sound had about played out and this song seemed to introduce an excitingly higher level of energy into the sound of disco .... a sound I don't think any other had yet demonstrated . The positve and uplifting sentiment , the full-steam-ahead vigorous drive of the arrangement , and the spirited vocals perhaps qualifies "MIGHT HIGH " as disco's first high energy song . ............. 8) :-? ***** |

| Yikes!!! I've got mail!!! Frontpage, I agree that the "High Energy" track is very cool & slinky and shoulda been a hit-- however, Motown was really dumping on the Supremes by this time--they just didn't seem to care enough to promote them or give them 12" remixes of their dance tunes or do anything except release the damn records and seemingly, expect nothing. [I'm looking at the Motown Disco cd and it says that "High Energy" was a 12"...so maybe they did get a 12"??? Is that right?...it seems like the LP version to me..a guy wrote in the A-Z vault that there's a "rumored DJ 12" " of this, so maybe there is.] Thommie 2458, I was listening to the Oct. 2005 party--it's available at Medium Rare records in SF (I've updated my post with info--I hope it's still valid.) So Jackie Robinson was a promo 12" also--thanks for that info- I've never heard that or Strutt. Strangely, Strutt didn't even chart on the R&B charts!!! Neonlights, I agree that Mighty High is a great record--it does have a fierce energy like that of The Trammps LP "Where The Happy People Go' even though it's only around 118 bpm--it gets me movin' in the direction of the dancefloor. Interestingly, the Trammps covered this with Gloria Gaynor in the late '90s and it was nice to hear them singing it and theirs is a decent version of it--but not anything like the greatness of the original. Someone here once wrote they bought a compilation and liked everything except "Mighty High"-- I can't quite understand how anyone could not like this record!!! :-? :o remicks, I agree that "Mighty High" pushed disco in the right direction away from the insipid remakes of old standards like "Baby Face", etc. and hustle-mania-fill-in-the-blank-named-"Orchestra"-tunes....that were dominant in the latter part of 1975. ("I Love Music" was another standout in this era.) I've been wondering where Philadelphia International has been on the charts of early 1976--charts they dominated in 1975--but Lou Rawls is coming up and new stuff from People's Choice, also. |

Hi Mark, Glad you're enjoying the set! Disc 7 was when I did most of my dancing that night. BTW, Jerry told me "Evolution" was planned but he just ran out of time. However, there's always next time. Oooo some of the titles he had hoped to play at the last party... |

| Hi Markey, A few additions regarding the pressings which were available to DJs on this week's chart. First Choice Theme / Ain't He Bad - First Choice: There was a promo 12" and it is pictured in the vault. http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/4415_0_2_0_C/. Same versions as the lp, BTW. Get Up & Boogie - Silver Convention: Midland released a promo-only 12" featuring a 7:55 remix (the lp was 6:22). This remix was later released on a commercial Midsong 12" in 1979. Here is the original promo: http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/2902_0_2_0_C/ Love Hangover - 5th Dimension: The promo 7" single has a 5:45 disco version in addition to the 3:40 single mix. The disco version was not available on the commercial 7", nor was there a 12" or lp. No, No, Joe - Silver Convention: Midland issued a 12" promo with a 7:25 remix (the lp is 3:55). I don't think the 12" was issued until August or September, so not sure if you want to list it here. I wonder if the 12" will nudge the song back onto the charts again later in the year.... Changin' / Movin' - Brass Construction: A promo-only 12" was issued by UA featuring both tracks. There were no remixes, just a rather odd pairing of both the LP and single mixes for each song. http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/4085_0_2_0_C/ Ma-Mo-Ah - Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra: A 5:00 remix of this song was available commercially on 12". Not sure if you want to list it on this chart since it was not remixed/released until 1977. The label credits the remix to Tony Valor. http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/796_0_2_0_C/ Tubular Bells - Champs Boys Orchestra: There was a French commercial 12" featuring a 4:10 mix which some US DJs got ahold of. Not sure, but I think this mix was also the same as the Janus 7" pressing. http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/5391_0_2_85_C30/ Make Love To Me - Fire & Rain: 20th Century issued a white label "for disco dj's only" 7" promo single of this. The length is 4:45 and was unavailable on either the lp or commercial 7". I think this was a different song than the Kelly Marie / Helen Reddy recordings. The writers are M. Freisner / P. McCarran. Not a very notable record IMHO... a breathy female vocal with a Bob Crewe-ish orchestral arrangement. I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me - Jimmy James: Pye issued a commercial 12" of this later in 1976, while Casablanca released a promo 12" of their own in 1977. Both are the same version with a running time of 5:17. http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/1946_0_2_0_C/ Rainforest - Biddu: Promo-only 12" issued by Epic with the 4:40 lp mix. More - Carol Williams: This was the 2nd promo 12" pressed by Salsoul. Remixed 12" version is 7:30 while lp is 4:54. I'd like to echo the sentiments of a lot of other forum readers and thank you again for all the effort putting this together - I used to read the Billboard charts and Tom's column every week when I was a dj in Reno. Since there was no record pool in Nevada, it was my primary source of information to what was being played. Each chart and column brings back a lot of great memories... I look forward to each new chart you post! Kevin in-the-groove |

| Hey Kevin, I can't thank you enough for that additional information!!! :D :D :D :D :D Your old post with all the info about the 1975 12" promos was so helpful and informative to me. I constantly referred to that list each week. I hoped you would post again. :D --I'm so happy you provided me with this additional info on what was a 12" and what wasn't. It appears that most of the hits by now (May 1976) were being released in that format, eh? Please keep posting--you seem to have all this stuff catalogued and organized for instant access!!! I thought you were from SF and had DJ'd there...so it was really Reno? Now a question.... when several tracks from an LP are charting in different places such as the Silver Convention or Melba Moore LP --should I keep each title separate as I've tried to do or just bundle everything from one source together as one item? I've thought it would be better to keep them separate so as not to overstate their impact--but I'm wondering if I should rethink that. When the National chart starts they bundle everything together---so maybe I should get on board now? My initial decision stemmed from the "Lady Marmalade/ What Can I Do For You" bundling which I listed as one item--but in checking their actual point totals for each mention--LM had about 100 more points than WCIDFY--so at that point I thought I would try to keep each title as its own entity if they had different totals in any given week--unless some chart was listing the whole LP--then I bundled as with The Trammps & The Brothers, etc. Any thoughts? |

| Hey Markey - thanks for the kind words! And glad that you found the 1975 12" info useful. I was a club DJ in Reno from 1976 to 1979. I then went to Oslo and London and worked in a couple of clubs in 1979 and 1980. After that, I did mobile dj work back in Reno until 1990. I moved to SF in 1994 and recently moved to Phoenix. I used to get to SF a couple of times a year during my DJ days, and I would make my pilgrimage to Aloha Records every time I went, which was not often enough! So perhaps our paths crossed a time or two... Living in the Castro was a wonderful experience - I miss it!!! I especially miss digging in the bins at my favorite used record stores around the bay area. I remember you posting about all the great disco scores you made at Amoeba Records when they opened their LA store - I had the same experience when the Amoeba records opened in the Haight... they had tons of disco 12”ers for first 2 or 3 years and then it started to dry up. My collection grew by leaps and bounds in SF ;-) Regarding your question on how to list multiple tracks from the same lp which were reported on different charts, I am thinking that you might just want to consolidate them into a single listing, just like you are doing for The Trammps and The Brothers lps. I like the way you still can see which charts are reporting which tracks with your alpha codes... It might over-emphasize the importance of some secondary tracks, but that is what the national chart will be doing. I seem to recall that the national chart would list the tracks on a single album in descending order of popularity, so you might list the tracks with the highest points first, if you are not already doing so. Will do my best to post more often. Kevin in-the-groove |

| ***** Marky .... can I chime in a bit ??  Don't mean to be giving you such a rough time on this issue  ( but for some reason you do bring out the devil in me !! :P  ) I'm not sure there is an entirely right or wrong answer to this one . For one thing we (you) are at the mercy of data collected many years ago .... watcha got is watcha got. I am suspect of some of the reporting .... because I remember how is was back then ....every store , DJ wanted to be the coolest . So they tended to over report personal favorites or releases they were predicting about to go big ... and then too quickly dropped some of the stuff that actually was still quite hot . Nothing anyone can do about that ..... that was part of the competitive engine that made it all so exiciting I guess ..... I have mentioned this before ..... the one angle I am most suspicious of are the retail reporters ....because I don't see how they are able to report that any given record is selling because of any particular cut . I contend that once the buyer is not buying a 45 ( or soon a 12" !! ) then they are buying the entire current project of the artist which includes any and all dance tunes found therein. One of the benefits of these split reportings though is that they do call to our attention that it isn't always solely the biggest , most obvious tune getting played .... other songs besides "THIS IS IT " by Melba Moore are getting played too. Still if a chart only reports "BRAND NEW " .... are we supposed to believe that "THIS IS IT " is not getting played, bought? Marky ..you have the advantage of having the actual charts you are working from ... so seeing them first hand gives you some better insight ......for instance .... I see Chart "D" is the only one to report "BRAND NEW " ...but then i see that that same chart , "D" , is also listed by you as one that reported "THIS IS IT " . So on that chart .... Chart "D" ..... is Melba Moore ranked in two different places ..... or ..... on that chart are the two bundled?? Any chance that just once ... in your spare time :P!!! ....... you could post say just the Colony Records chart you are working from .... so we could better understand the raw data too .... See I told you , you bring out the devil in me !!!! :P :P End of Part I : ***** as always ..... let me close by saying you are doing a great job .... such a wealth of information for all to benefit from ........... :D 8) :D 8) |

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... At long last, the Trammps move up to #1. The single has charted 12 weeks and the LP has charted for 2 weeks. This week, charts A (NYC discos) + F (Boston discos) say : “LP, all cuts” (A= #2; F= #1) C holds the single @ #1 for the 7th week. B moves the single from #7 up to #4 D moves the single from #4 up to #1 E moves the single from #6 up to #5 (this is as high as LA ever charts it) I’m thinking that B,C, D & E probably meant to chart the LP “Where The Happy People Go” as opposed to the single “THAT’S Where The Happy People Go”---but that’s not how it’s printed. Next week, all 4 list the LP-all cuts and only the guest chart F from Houston lists the single…from then on it’s the LP-all cuts….. The screwed list: Donna Summer is dropped by chart C. Ecstasy, Passion & Pain will never be on chart E. Vicki Sue Robinson is no longer on chart D. Melba Moore’s “This Is It” is off B (they are only charting other LP tracks “Free/ Play Boyscout” Jackie Robinson is no longer on that chart what first brung her---E!!!! Add Insult to Injury List: Miss Ross is double-dumped (ouch!!!) :x  by B (not charting the 5th Dimension, either!!!!---they’re OVER the “Love Hangover” it seems…. And chart D (only charts the 5th D version this week)….chart A & C are charting BOTH Diana & 5th D. The More I Get, The Lower I Chart Dept: Oddly Jimmy James & the Vagabonds seem to be having a reverse success… each week as they acquire more points—they chart lower!!! 4/17 with 3 points they were #36 4/24 with 5 points they were #37 5/01 with 6 points they are #38!!!!! Of the debuts, Jesse Green’s “Nice & Slow” is charted for the first time on E (LA) & F (Boston); odd for a NYC (Scepter) record mixed by Moulton’s pal Mel Cheren himself…next week NYC’s chart B finds it also. Note that chart B has flipped “A Fifth Of Beethoven” for a brief mention of the b-side “California Strut” with a vocal by newcomer credited as Angie Bofill…..later Angie Dickinson…no… uh, ANGELA Bofilll!!! And lastly, the landmark Double Exposure record “Ten Percent” (still listed as “10 %”) debuts on chart A as “Walter Gibbons special version”…..the first time a remixer has been mentioned by name. Moulton says in his column that a competion was held with NYC DJs to remix this track and Gibbons was declared the winner. Moulton also says the long version won’t be released commercially ……..BUT WITHIN 2 WEEKS, SALSOUL WILL BE THE FIRST COMPANY TO RELEASE A 12" TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. . (Also, note that Moulton says the version of “My Love Supreme” he has charted @ #15 on chart A is “not commercially available”) Things will soon change….the peeps want the DISCO DISK VERSIONS!!!!! THE BIG TEASE Next week, a whole lotta movement takes place: 2 new records crack the Top 10 and a slew of others move into the Top 20. The highest debut is a new title from Bohannon. Other debuts are from D.C. LaRue, Hokis Pokis ( still says “Hocus Pocus” as it did with “Nowhere”), Sweet Music, the Righteous Brothers (!!!), the Pretty Maid Company (just for Jussik!!) and a newcomer named just…”Luther.” __________________________________________________ __- DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #79: 5/01/76 (Thanks to shootyourshot for typing out & sending me this column. BTW, shootyourshot, I’ve been trying to e-mail you for some help with a couple things and I can’t seem to get the new address you gave me to go through….please contact me when you have a minute. Thanks. ) :D [NEW YORK] Keeping up its disco image, Midland International has released a new album by the Inner City Symphony. Standout on the LP is “Inner City Suite,” with a funky and catchy “Time Flies” and Philadelphia-sounding “She Loves Me” following closely. Also on the disk are remakes of “Fly, Robin, Fly” and “Theme From SWAT.” Both are well-handled. Warren Schatz picks up another solid production credit as well A few weeks ago Salsoul released a 12 inch disco disk of “Ten Percent” [says “10%”] by Double Exposure with a 7 minute version on one side and a 9 minute version on the other, both of which will not be commercially available. (if only Tom knew) Local spinners have been given the opportunity to put together their own versions and DJ Walter Gibbons has come up with a winner, as local audience response propels it on the disco charts this week. There will be a shorter commercial version available shortly, but it won’t have the instrumental sections with breaks, both of which are strong assets to Gibbons’ version. “I Got Your Love” by Stratavarious, featuring Lady, has been released by Polydor of Canada both commercially and as a 12-inch disco disk. While the label circulated only some 200 12-inch disco disks there, a number of them have reached New York and the response has been strong. Basically, the sound of the record matches up to the sound from Philadelphia. __________________________________________________ ___ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You CATHEDRALS LIPSTICK LOVE CHANT HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL YOU’LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE MINE LOWDOWN TAKE A LITTLE TROUBLE-MAKER/ LOVE POWER ALWAYS THERE & DON’T TAKE AWAY THE MUSIC __________________________________________________ __ Today's chart was typed, while listening to: REMEMBER THE TROC [“black"...... shhhhhhhh, someones got a copyright!!!!] PARTY --7 cds from the last Troc party (October 2005) flawlessly mixed by Jerry Bonham and totally capturing the spirit of the grand old Troc days!!! | ***** Lots to comment on this week's chart Marky . :D As an aside ..... I look forward to the day of finding "MOVING LIKE A SUPERSTAR " . I have no recollection of this tune , but its chart performance has sure been impressive. That's the biggest one of 16/17 on the list I can't identify . ( and I was there ! ) ........ (Records to hunt !!! 8) ) Trivia : The two versions of the same song LOVE HANGOVER have now worked their way up onto this week's Top 10 at the same time . I suspect that never happens again in the history of the charts . (?).... I can think of very few disco songs that had competing versions ( LOVE IS IN THE AIR " ) ? ... especially at the same time with both being so strong .... so this may be a one time only occurrence ..... More Trivia : Thank the disco gods ..... it took 3 months (an eternity in discoland time ) ..... but "THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO" .... has clawed its way past the ladies to the top . 8) Does any song past or present ever again take so long ... 12 weeks ... to hit the mark ?? :-? --- The biggest news this week ( and it is big ) : 45) * TEN PERCENT – Double Exposure (Salsoul 12” – Walter Gibbons Special Version/ Promo only) so far !! 1 week on the chart/ DEBUT At last , there it is ...... :D ....... the arrival of the song that's going to really make a statement about disco ..... becoming the first tune ever available to the public as a 12" pressing . A defining moment ... disco has really become its own entity with this .. ... a special music with its own special presentation . Record stores would now find it hard to ignore ..... finding it necessary to dedicate a specific area for this genre now available in this , its own special format 8) 8) 8) . I 'd love to hear any stories from anyone who remembers that transition happening back then . I don't recall who distributed Salsoul at this point ( already RCA ? ) ..... but I can just imagine their reps first trying to get orders on this . "What's that you say ? It's a single song .. .... but it's not on a 45? It's on a 12" ?! Why ? ... And I'm supposed to pay you more money for it ?? ..... Where am I supposed to put it in my store ???? " I'm sure many thought it was a silly novelty .... a passing fad .... never imagining 12 inchers would become the entrenched staple they remained throughout the vinyl era .... Of course looking back now it seems a non- brainer ... but imagine then ... trying to convince retailers they could successfully sell what had always been on a 45 ( for 20 +years !) ... only now on a bigger size for 2 or 3 times the price .... I wonder what the total sales of this first one was ? ( Thank goodness they chose this , a monster hit, to release as their first tester ! :D ) Disco has definitely arrived : the music's top notch , the clubs are increasingly opening , and now it is about to seriously invade the record stores. 8) :D ***** Typed while listening to this week's # 31 song : TUBULAR BELLS –-- Champs’ Boys Orchestra A wonderful orchestration giving this haunting song a much more friendly vibe .... using (stealing) "LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY's bass line verbatim played underneath ...... |
