Default Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Part #3: December 18, 1976

By The Numbers......

THE DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS TOP 40--PURELY BY POINTS:

Legend: (B) = bundled with other titles by Billboard; (B/U) = "Bubbling Under the Top 40"

Using the chart data from all 16 charts, including Montreal. Based solely on point totals of individual titles; in cases of point ties, the title on more charts gets precedence--if # of charts is the same, it's in alphabetical order and a {tie} /* = debut/ (R) = Return

OK, now let's check to see where this week's charted items rank in the
DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ......

[first posted in the 3/26/76 column]

The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of
1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979)

Default Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

thanks, Marky, for the latest December '76 chart . . .got 3 titles in your Bubbling Under to comment on:

1. It figures that with a subject matter like this song, that New Orleans is the only city still charting it . . .
76) (R) THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC (12-inch) - The Softones
(H & L 12-inch remix: 7:00) P: Hugo & Luigi // W: Johnny Mercer/ Harold Arlen
4 points/ 1 chart = New Orleans
BDA Top 40: 2 weeks on chart
DCC chart: 5 weeks on chart // (R)= RETURN (last charted 11/13/76 @ #38.)

2. I have always loved Odia Coates' vocal stylings, but I've only known her through her mid-70s recordings with Paul Anka (You're Having My Baby / One Man Woman, One Woman Man / I Believe There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love / I Don't Like To Sleep Alone) and now this disco recording. Is there much out there on her WITHOUT the contributions of Canada's original "Lonely Boy" ???
86) * MAKE IT UP TO ME IN LOVE - Odia Coates & Paul Anka
(Epic 12-inch: 5:35) ["A Tom Moulton Mix"] P: Denny Diante // W: Paul Anka
2 points/ 1 chart = Dallas+Houston
BDA Top 40: n/c
DCC chart: 1 week on chart // *DEBUT

3. Say it ain't so, Marky !!! I take it this is going to be the last ever chart listing of my fave disco tune of all time (down to #90, with just 1 point earned on the Denver chart) ??? Sniff . .sob.
90) HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL - Tavares
(Capitol LP / 12-inch disco disk promo remix: 6:32) P: Freddie Perren // W: F. Perren/ K. St. Lewis
1 point/ 1 chart = Denver
BDA Top 40: 10 weeks on chart
DCC chart: 31 weeks on chart // Last week: #86 (-4)

. . and Marky, thanks (as always) for a great weekly chart recap -- can't wait for your year-end recap of '76's charts (following the Christmas Day chart, of course) . . . . perhaps in August sometime ???

Are you saying that New Orleans has a special affinity for "old black magic"???? Whether that's the reason I'm unsure...the 12" remix seemed to chart mostly in the South (Atlanta was the other city I recall off the top of my head.) It is interesting how some of these 12-inch versions are released too late to get a second wind in the clubs...witness "My Love Is Free" which gets its 12" release charted this week...after it is mostly played out from the LP version...
hmmm.....peeking ahead, I see it does get into the mid-teens in 1977--but not the Top 10.

I remember thinking that Odia Coates was going to be a BIG STAR--she was beautiful and sang quite well--seemed to have the right package to go beyond the opening act for Paul Anka's show in Vegas....but it didn't happen. The flip side of the 12" is a solo track by her and Anka does give her top billing on this duet!! I know she did a few solo LPs.....she charted one previous disco track briefly-- "Showdown" in early 1975. [I'm wondering if that was a cover of the ELO track? ] AMG has no info on her discography at present...just the duets on various compilations...so she's pretty forgotten.

I think this is it for Tavares. Denver has been charting this as their #15 record for the past four weeks as they repeated the same chart, and Denver gets dumped after this week, but it's had a 31 week run, oh, ain't that enough for you????... strangely, I don't think Tavares charts any disco tracks after the heights they reached in 1976, did they??? Very strange that an act could do so well with 3 monster hits and then just abandon the genre ...oh wait, I'm forgetting "More Than A Woman" from "SNF"...but that's about it. They stayed pop/r&b after that until the hits dried up.

Well, thanks for the props...I appreciate it. The last chart of 1976 should be up in August....the year-end will take some time...that's a whole lotta info to digest and compile...I think I know how I'm gonna do it...but it's tricky because the first 2/3 of the year's charts were done in the old system with 6 charts (3 cities' audience response in discos & 3 retailers in NYC) and then in September we got 16 city charts compiled into a national chart. I think I'm gonna choose the 6 city charts with the most national Top 10 consensus to compile with the 6 charts that were used in the first 8 months of the year. Luckily, NY & LA are in the Top 6, so that helps with continuity. Unfortunately, I see a tie coming in the city chart totals, so I'll have to play with that and figure out a solution...and then I'm sure there are other problems that I don't foresee now....but I'll give it a try and get it up before the end of the year. Then I need a rest!

I just recently noticed that 1976 has taken 3 years to compile & type......I started in August 2005!!!!

I love to hear Drlove , that HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL is your all-time favorite disco song. Sometimes I forget just how wonderful that song is/ was in its day ... at the time it was a great example of how pop disco offered something new and different from concurrent pop rock .... the swirling strings/harps, the lush orchestration ..... and its deliverance of a kinder gentler message while still being aggressive in its tone .... Sweet and dancable!! I don't think better imagery of "heaven' has ever been as successfully captured in a musical arrangement ...

So long to a brilliant lighter side of disco music ...

Twenty-one weeks on the chart ( five + months!!) and nine (two + months) of those at Number One !!

I wonder how much better that song would've done if only the Bee Gees had given disco a go !!!
