“I Get Lifted," the George McCrae song, has been redone by Sweet Music into a vocal and instrumental. The record is getting some action in the Boston clubs and will be released this week on the Wand label. The sound is more r & b and a lot funkier. >>

<<has anybody heard or bought this version? sounds interesting. gotta hear it!!>>

if you mean the sweet music version, yes i have it, it's on scepter / wand records and released as a double sided 12", the other side being "nice and slow" by jesse green. excellent version of the tune, funky bassline, long instrumental intro, beautiful horn and string sections, recommended!

The Sweet Life I Get Lifted track is available on the "West End Story, Vol. 4"....

tracks:

1 No Frills Taana Gardner
2 Take Some Time Sparque
3 Searchin' for Some Lovin Debbie Trusty
4 I Get Lifted Sweet Life
5 Hot Summer Nights Love Club
6 Don't I Ever Cross Your Mind Barbara Mason
7 Hold Me, Squeeze Me Michele
8 People Come Dance Ednah Holt, Starluv

from AMG:

"This volume in particular features some of the label's lesser known songs, but there are still some obvious highlights such as Sparque's "Take Some Time" and Sweet Life's "I Get Lifted." Overall, there aren't many low points on this album or with this album relative to others in the series, since practically everything West End released has consistent quality and enduring attributes.

Discodisk, you are right, those 7" 33 RPM promos are really rare, I wonder how many were ever released, any online listing?

As far as I remember the only one I own is Temprees "I found love on the Disco floor" ('76- 6:34), luckily the same Fay Hauser promo 7" with the long Disco Mix version (listing @ 7:00) was released retail (same catalog # SM 400) with a short edit (3:50) on the flip.

Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: TURN THE BEAT AROUND (week #4); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one.

New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (7th week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT) (3rd week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (4th week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= TIME MOVES ON) (1st week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= LOVE HANGOVER (3rd week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Boston Discos:
(#1 = LOVE HANGOVER) (2nd reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

THE COVER LIST
(are covers cooling down???…last week Moulton said…. “It ( new Moonlion record) is another standard done in the formula style of Bubblegum disco (high hat, background girls and lots of bass). The sound is wearing on a lot of DJs, but the audiences seem to still like it.") :lol: :P :lol:

1) NIGHT AND DAY – (Cole Porter composition; #1 Pop for Leo Reisman’s Orchestra (vocals by Fred Astaire) in 1932; also featured in the Astaire/ Rogers film “The Gay Divorcee”)
2) HURT SO BAD (Teddy Randazzo /Bobby Hart/ Bobby Wilding composition; #10 Pop for Little Anthony & the Imperials in 1965; #12 Pop for the Lettermen in 1969; #8 Pop for Linda Ronstadt in 1980.)
3) COULD IT BE MAGIC – (Inspired by Chopin’s “Prelude in C Minor”; #6 Pop hit for Barry Manilow in 1975)
4) CARAVAN (#4 Pop for Duke Ellington in 1937)
5) MORE - (Oscar-nominated song from 1963 Italian shockumentary “Mondo Cane”; charted #8 Pop by Kai Winding (jazz trombonist) in 1963; covered by nearly every MOR singer of the SIXTIES!!! (Paging Andy Willliams!!!!)
6) PAGLIACCI (Adapted from the opera by Leoncavallo)
7) DO IT ANY WAY YOU WANNA – (Leon Huff compostion that charted #1 Disco for 8 weeks here in 1975 as performed by People’s Choice)
8. MOONLIGHT SERENADE – (Mitchell Parrish/ Glenn Miller composition; hit for Glenn Miller’s Orchestra in 1939)

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

TIT FOR TAT, BITCH!!!! :P TIT. FOR. TAT.
(Summer says “ Uh, no, actually IT’S MY TURN, Missy Ross") :P :P :P :lol:

Last week Miss Ross bested Miss Summer by one lousy point –77 to 76--; this week Miss Summer turns the tables on Miss Ross and does exactly the same thing to her!!! Donna beats Diana by 1 point—77 to 76!!!! The Trammps finally have gained support from LA chart E and chart for the first time on all 6 charts with 73 points. That’s 3 records with over 70 points; one with 55, two in the 42 – 47 range, 3 in the 33-37 range, and 4 more between 24 – 26 points. That’s a whole lotta HITZ, kidz!!! :D :D :D

Miss SUMMER stats:

A= #2; B= #1; C= #5; D= #4; E= #2; F= #5

Miss ROSS stats:

A= #3; B= #7; C= #6; D= #2; E= #1; F= #1

TRAMMPS stats:

A= #1; B= #3; C= #1; D= #3; E= #13; F= #2

The Top 10 rearranges itself not letting any new titles in. "You're not kewl enuf to enter. Sorry." 8) :lol:

Next week , 3 titles DO enter the Top 10 for the first time and we get a variety pack of 12 new titles: 2 come from the new LPs of Melba Moore and Silver Convention; 3 are followups to previous hits from Jimmy James & the Vagabonds, Calhoon and Choice Four (the latter produced by the very busy Van McCoy). Two records currently charting, “I Love To Love” and “Love Hangover” see cover versions entering the chart by Al Downing and the Fifth Dimension, respectively. And that damn fickle chart B is gonna start charting the Fifth Dimension version and drop Miss Ross!!! :evil: :x :cry: THE NERVE!!!!!!!!! :x :evil: :cry: :roll: Also we’ll see the debut of Miami’s Foxy to the disco charts and new stuff from jazz sax player David Sanborn, the Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra and the lovely Miss Candi Staton will warn “young hearts” to never get hung up like her man and she…..

Stay tuned…….

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #75: 4/10/76

(Thanks to shootyourshot, as always, for providing this column)

(NEW YORK) Ariola (Germany) has just released the single “Pretty Maid” by the Pretty Maids (Maid) Company, and if you didn’t know who the artist was, you’d think that it was Penny McLean from the Silver Convention. The disk will probably be released here shortly on American Ariola but, meanwhile, it’s available as an import. Interestingly, the sleeve has TSOM (The Sound Of Munich) printed on it, and it’s all very fitting as there really is a distinct dance sound coming from Germany right now. The magic of this record is its simplicity.

Millie Jackson has a new LP coming this month and a sneak preview points to her being back in her old groove with some strong tracks. Cut in Muscle Shoals, the LP was produced by Brad Shapiro and Jackson. The two strongest cuts are “Do What Makes the World Go Round” and “House For Sale.” The former song has the sound that made her a popular disco artist to begin with.

Kokomo has come out with its second Columbia album, which was also produced by Brad Shapiro. The LP, recorded last fall in Miami’s Criteria Studio, has one strong dance cut in “Use Your Imagination.”

Downstairs Records here has opened another store—this one in the subway arcade at Seventh Ave. and 33rd Street. The outlet will handle disco product as well as import and oldies.

The Soul Children have a new LP on Epic with two good disco tunes in “A Little Understanding” and “Highway.” The group’s sound is basically the same, very Memphis and away from commerciality for its own sake.

Cuts from Melba Moore’s “This Is It” LP picking up strong response are “Free,” “Make Me Believe In You” and “Brand New.” The songs all have the Van McCoy sound.

Seriously .......look at that top 10 and all the wonderful artists and producers being represented ... does dance music ever get any better than that ....
If disco is like a box of chocolates ... this box is nicely assorted .... with all kinds of goodies :D

Marvelous chart ....

That said .... I'm getting very concerned that as each passing week of 1976 goes by ... ( the greatest disco record of all-time ) ..... The Trammps "THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO " fails to reach the top . :P :evil: ..... Mr. Chartmaker ....... if this song winds up falling short of #1 ... I regret that I must opine your calculating operatum as highly suspect and therefore in need of investigative review ...... ............. :P

I don't have much to contribute, but Kudos for putting this all together! I've got some free time now to look through the whole thread, there are so many songs here that I haven't heard yet and which are going straight to my list :). I can't wait for later in the year when The Undisputed Truth and The Supremes start to show up..

And look out for the Pretty Maid Company, too! Now why wasn't THAT tremendous track mentioned in the book of Billboard charts ?

Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: LOVE HANGOVER (week #1); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

(#1= ”A LOVE TRILOGY” (Entire LP)) (1st week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= ”DON’T STOP NOW” LP) (1st week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (5th week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= TIME MOVES ON) (2nd week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT / COULD IT BE MAGIC (1st week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Washington, D.C. Discos:
(#1 = TURN THE BEAT AROUND) (2nd reported week; last reported #1 on 3/27/76-- so approx. the 4th week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

It is hard to discern the title of the LP because all the tracks are listed in bold titles; eventually, Billboard starts calling it “BRAZIL” which according to Graham’s post in the A-Z section, is the correct title.)

__________________________________________________ __

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

Two records chart on all 6 charts this week: Donna Summer @ #1 (74 pts.) and the Trammps @ #2 (71 pts.)

DONNA SUMMER stats:
A= #1; B= #5; C= #5; D= #6; E= #1; F= #4

TRAMMPS stats:
A= #2; B= #4; C= #1; D= #3; E= #12; F= #3

SEVEN—that’s right 7—records are screwed out of across the board chartings by each not placing on one and only one chart!!! :x :evil: :( :o The most egregious example of these is MISS ROSS’s “Love Hangover” being dropped by chart B in favor of the 5th Dimension cover of the record. Miss Ross has had 6 solid weeks of across the board charting until now and could have had 2 more weeks if Downstairs Records hadn’t dumped her!!! :evil: :evil: :evil: Granted the 5 points chart B gives 5th Dimension this week wouldn’t have moved Miss Ross from her 3rd place ranking (65 up to 70); however, in future weeks she actually could have claimed #1 again—if she’d had the points chart B gives the 5th Dimension. Most of the other charts bundle 5th Dimension with Miss Ross when they begin charting both versions—but not chart B!!!! :roll:

MISS ROSS stats:
A= #3; B= N/C; C= #6; D= #2; E= #2; F= #2

The others:
Ecstasy, Passion & Pain is not charted on chart E.
Vicki Sue Robinson is not charted on chart D.
Melba Moore is not on chart B.
Jackie Robinson is not on chart C.
First Choice is not on chart C.
The Brothers are not on chart E.

Silver Convention charts 4 titles from their 2nd LP. “Get Up And Boogie (That’s Right)” is the highest ranked (#8.) A= #7; C= #8, E= #3; F= #14;
“No, No, Joe” charts on A = #7 & D= #8.
“You’ve Got What It Takes (To Please Your Woman)” is the chosen title for the ultra picky chart B (#3)
& “San Francisco Hustle” debuts on chart D @ #8.
So technically Silver Convention is across the board—all 6 charts—just with different titles appealing to different charts. However, remicks, before you tell me it therefore should be #1—please note that’s it’s not #1 anywhere!!! IF I bundled them all into just one entry…it would have 53 points…moving it to #6 from #8. Just for the record. :P :P :P :lol:

The Top 10 adds 3 titles by Jackie Robinson, First Choice and The Brothers; 3 others drop out: Andrea True Connection down to #11 after 11 weeks in the Top 10 (5 @ #1); John Davis drops to #12 after 6 weeks in the Top 10 and Philly Devotions drop from #9 last week down to #34 this week, losing support from 4 charts so that only chart A gives it 4 points this week!!! Philly Devotions apparently don’t have “legs”….as they say.

Take note that, for the first time, the term "disco disk" is used on the Washington, D.C. chart this week in reference to the Trammps and Melba Moore's 12" versions of their hits. This is the term that will be used to differentiate that something is on a 12"... for a certain period of time to come.

Candi Staton’s southern soul meets disco classic is my personal fave of the debuts. Produced and composed by Dave Crawford, fresh from his triumph with Mighty Clouds of Joy, Candi’s record is a real slow-starter. I peeked ahead and it’s still on the first chart in September!!!—but it moves slowly on one or two charts at a time; I’m not sure at this point, how high it will eventually rank here. But—it’s around for a long time. :D :D :D

Jimmy James & The Vagabonds also chart their followup to “I Am Somebody” with “I’ll Go Where Your Music Takes Me” (a good tune) and Foxy debut their first disco chart record “Get Off Your Aahh! And Dance.”

Next week, the long-awaited Trammps LP finally charts along with 2 tracks from the new Supremes LP!!! (I can see from several posts that the Supremes fans are eager for this to chart!!! You won’t be disappointed—after a setback in the second week, they move up very nicely. ) :D :D :D

Also, titles from Van McCoy, Champs Boys Orchestra, Biddu Orchestra, Walter Murphy (YES!! THAT ONE!!!), Hot Ice and Fire & Rain debut. 11 records return briefly next week (6 from the San Francisco chart alone) for a total of 49 items; Once again the Top 10 rearranges itself allowing only the Trammps LP into the upper echelons of chart supremacy!!!!

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #76: 4/17/76

(Thanks to shootyourshot, as always, for providing this column)

(NEW YORK) The Trammps’ “Where The Happy People Go” LP ships this week. The cuts are all uptempo and, with the exception of “Hooked For Life,” are all new. “Soul Searching Time” and “Ninety Nine & A Half,” both very funky, have some exciting breaks, while “Disco Party,” the longest cut, has a good party sound.

“Can We Come Together” features a full orchestra sound with a strong guitar solo by Norman Harris. And, finally, the most unusual cut on the record is “Love Is A Funky Thing” with a rhythm ace for the rhythm and bass. The only other instruments used are a guitar and Fender Rhodes. There’s also “That’s Where The Happy People Go,” the title cut.

“Rain Forest” is the title of a new Biddu Orchestra LP on Epic. There are several strong cuts: “Chic-Chica-Chic-Chica-Chic,” with a Latin flair; “Rock Me With Your Love,” harder sounding and in the R&B vein; “Laura,” done in typical Biddu fashion, and “Rain Forest,” the group’s current single in the U.K. Several of the DJs in town already have singles and the audience response has been good.

Calhoon has an updated version of the Sam & Dave classic “Soul Man” on Warner/Spector….Jimmy James & The Vagabonds have a hot one with “I’ll Go Where Your Music Takes Me” [says “That’s Where The Music Takes Me” which was actually a Neil Sedaka tune from ’75!!!] :oops: (Pye). The song has the same kind of drive as its last single “I Am Somebody”…. Miz Davis will have an album out in two weeks off of her West Coast disco hit “Sing A Happy Funky Song.” The disk is on Now Records, which is out of Los Angeles. The single itself is just getting play here. There will be a disco version on the LP.

Ariola America is rush-releasing the new Jackie Robinson “Movin’ Like A Superstar” LP. Also, the label is coming in two weeks with “Pretty Maid” by the Pretty Maid Company.

Hey, Marky
I have found that CD too.
I quite enoyed it, even though there are a couple of covers and some tunes are remixed.
I like the way it mixes from one track to the next.
What say you ???

Hey starsky,

Yeah, I found this set quite enjoyable. The remixes and cover versions are done tastefully and it's all mixed nicely. I've only listened a couple times--maybe I'll find something to love or hate later on!!! Nicest surprise was the inclusion of the Johnny Mathis track (although pitched up a bit to around 126 bpm);--We who danced at Trocadero under the tasteful guidance of Bobby Viteritti--thought we were the only ones who knew this record!!! It's actually the b-side to "Begin The Beguine"--neither of which charted on the Billboard Top 100 disco charts!!!! Strange but true. :roll:

Regards to Hutch. :lol:
