(Is it just for old disco we live???..... Well sur-PRISE, sur-PRISE—what we got here this week is “A TIE” for #1!!!!! I don’t like “TIES”. :x I’d like to have a clearcut winner—but this week we have 2 records on all 6 charts with 75 points apiece. So, like it or not, we’ve gotta TIE. MISS ROSS actually loses one point from her 76 point total last week, while VICKI SUE adds 16 points to her total from last week. To further complicate matters,ANDREA TRUE has one point less--74 points-- to earn her a #3 (when there’s a tie for #1—there is no #2, right?—that’s how the Nielson ratings does it.) :-? Yes, kidz we coulda had a 3-way TIE and I bet Miss Andrea knows a thing or two about 3-ways, eh???? :P MISS ROSS stats: A= #3; B= #5; C= #8; D= #2; E= #2; F= #1 VICKI SUE stats: A= #2; B= #1; C= #3; D= #7; E= #5; F= #3 ANDREA TRUE stats: A= #4; B= #8; C= #2; D= #3; E= #1; F= #4 So, let’s break those stats down: #1 = Ross (1); VSR (1); ATC (1) #2 = Ross (2); VSR (1); ATC (1) #3 = Ross (1); VSR (2); ATC (1) #4 = Ross (0); VSR (0); ATC (2) #5 = Ross (1); VSR (1); ATC (0) #6 = None #7 = Ross (0); VSR (1); ATC (0) #8 = Ross (1); VSR (0); ATC (1) Now that’s what I call close!!!! We’ve never had 3 records this tight at such high levels all at the same time. It’s called MASSIVE hits, kidz!!! :D :D :D After the 3 ladies on top, we have THE TRAMMPS moving their single up to #4 with 59 points (They have 3 #1 rankings in NYC (ACD) and a #2 in SF (chart F). How chart B failed to mention them this week when the two other retailers rank it #1 is kinda baffling. B gets on board next week, but LA/SD (chart E) is gonna take more time—'til April 10 to be exact. SILVER CONVENTION moves its new single into the Top 10 (#7) in its 2nd week. 4 other records in the 20-30 range will eventually reach the Top 10 also. Nearly all of the major players in the early spring of ’76 have debuted now (one more contender will debut auspiciously at #8 in 2 weeks and go to #5)—but most of the PLAYAS are on the field this week. The competition for chart supremacy has begun…..some of these titles will still be in the Top 10 by the end of May…. Obviously the major newcomer is DONNA SUMMER—charting this week only on the LA/SD chart E. –but JACKIE ROBINSON will also get to the Top 10 ; ditto PHILLY DEVOTIONS and ECSTASY, PASSION & PAIN. OK, I spilled the beans once again!!! So much for my “teasing”!!! JOHNNIE TAYLOR will top both the Pop (4 weeks) and R&B charts (6 weeks)—but merits his only disco charting this week (#9 on chart D). I don’t know why…maybe it’s deemed too slow for the clubs…but ya know this was played all over the country…if it was #1 Pop & #1 R&B…. Next week, our #1 has 79 points out of a possible 90; the top 6 all have over 47 points (enough for any of them to have earned a #1 in the past). Only 2 records chart all 6 charts—but 5 chart on 5 charts. There are always those odd holdouts or inexplicable nonchartings!!!! Only 4 new titles chart, according to my calculations, those being new titles by FIRST CHOICE, PENNY McLEAN, DENNIS COFFEY, & BROWN SUGAR. And that’s the way it is. Stay tuned...I think the best chart so far is coming on April 3, 1976 _______________________________________ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #72: 3/20/76 (NEW YORK) RCA is rush releasing the new LP by The Brothers. It was produced by Warren Schatz, who seems to be the label’s hottest disco producer. “Make Love’ and “Last Chance To Dance” are the two strongest cuts. “Were You Ready For That” has some qualities of the Love Unlimited Orchestra while “Under The [My] Skin” has more of a MFSB sound. “Brothers Theme” is also good. It’s one of the best sounding LPs to come out this year and will obviously be big at the discos. Schatz, who also produced the Vicki Sue Robinson LP, is creating a new sound for the label by taking different styles of music and combining them to create one sound—a very interesting and very effective approach. Atlantic is releasing a special disco disk of “Wild Cherry” from Gene Page’s latest LP. This version is much harder and more r&b sounding than the LP cut. A strong break well into the record also works well. The special disco mix was done by Atlantic’s Anita Wexler and Jimmy Douglass. Angeloni’s disco in Trenton, N.J., is another club that is starting to book some of the top disco acts. Starting off the new policy there will be De-Lite recording artists the Crown Heights Affair March 31. The normal admission is $2, but when there is entertainment it will be raised to $5. The club has a capacity of 1,000 and spinner Jerry Morgano plays Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Interestingly, there are a number of clubs that are open only three days a week and are making a go of it. The Trammps (Atlantic) LP ships in two weeks. The LP version of “That’s Where The Happy People Go” is 7:50 in length. Thelma Houston has just finished recording four sides at Media Sound N.Y. with producer Van McCoy and Motown will be releasing a single soon. The sides are all uptempo and picking one will be difficult. John Hedges, dj at the City, and John Randazzo, dj at the Mineshaft, are the coordinators of the newly formed San Francisco Disco DJ Association. There are now 32 members and several meetings have been held at the PS Restaurant there. [I lived on Geary and Polk—about a block from the PS.] The permanent address of the association will be announced shortly. __________________________________________________ ___ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You "A LOVE TRILOGY" featuring COULD IT BE MAGIC FIRST CHOICE THEME/AIN’T HE BAD/ GOTTA GET AWAY (FROM YOU BABY) THIS IS IT NO, NO, JOE/ YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES AFTER THE DANCE/ I WANT YOU LOVE REALLY HURTS WITHOUT YOU BROTHERS THEME/ UNDER MY SKIN/ MAKE LOVE RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM I’LL GO WHERE YOUR MUSIC TAKES ME RAIN FOREST & YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE!!!!!! _________________________________________________ Today's chart was typed while listening to: 1) FUNK SPECTRUM III 2) CURTOM SOUL TRIPPIN’ II |

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by someone named Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of 1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979) Previously, the highest ranked record on the Disc-o-la list that has already charted here, was actually in early 1975-- the #5 ranked Gloria Gaynor classic medley HONEY BEE/ NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE/ REACH OUT, I’LL BE THERE. But this week the top 3 records on the DCC chart are all in the Disc-o-la Top 10!!!! :D :D :D :D By Disc-o-la Fortune 500 ranking: #3) TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT #9) LOVE HANGOVER #10) THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO #70) TURN THE BEAT AROUND #81) MORE, MORE, MORE #120) MIGHTY HIGH #155) TOUCH AND GO #160) COULD IT BE MAGIC/ COME WITH ME #233) LET’S GROOVE #255) SPANISH HUSTLE #320) HEART BE STILL #340) MOVIN’/ CHANGIN’ #368) I LOVE TO LOVE #393) DISCO LADY – (drops off the Disco chart this week; still #1 R&B and approaching #1 Pop) :o #429) LOS CONQUISTADORES CHOCOLATES #456) STREET TALK #470) WOW #474) AFRICAN SYMPHONY #488) DECEMBER, 1963 (Oh, What A Night) – ( not on the Disco chart; but currently #1 Pop) :-? And other classic titles are soon to chart…but it’s a very heady list of classics that are on this weeks chart, I’d say. Now to this weeks business: Miss Ross retains #1 for the 3rd week with 79 points ( her best total thus far) on all 6 charts. The Trammps move up to #2 with 71 points—they are just lacking the LA chart support for their shot at #1. Donna Summer grabs all 4 NYC charts (51 points) + the LA chart (13 points) where she debuted last week; she’s just lacking the 6th chart (Washington, D.C. this week) Andrea True holds across the board after 11 weeks (5 @ #1) still charting on all 6 charts. Vicki Sue Robinson loses chart D and falls to #5 from her tie @ #1 with Miss Ross last week. She may be down, but as Frank Stallone sang in “Stayin’ Alive”…she is “Far From Over.” MISS ROSS stats: A= #2; B= #4; C= #5; D= #3; E= #1; F= #2 THE TRAMMPS stats: A= #1; B= #2; C= #1; D= #2; E= n/c; F= #3 DONNA SUMMER stats: A= #8; B= #1; C= #3; D= #1; E= #3; F= n/c ANDREA TRUE stats: A= #7; B= #14; C= #2; D= #6; E= #2; F= #4 VICKI SUE ROBINSON stats: A= #3; B= #7; C= #6; D= n/c; E= #4; F= #1 Silver Convention grabs #6 with their new single charting all charts except chart A!!! Why NYC DJs are snubbing S.C. I’m not sure—but some folks aren’t gonna care much for Get Up And Boogie—but will like either No, No, Joe , San Francisco Hustle or You’ve Got What It Takes (To Please Your Woman) –take your pick!!!-- when the LP is released. (Moulton says this week). Philly Devotions move up to #7, lacking the support of only chart E. John Davis & the Monster Orchestra falls down 3 spots to #8 and Fatback Band & B.C.G round out the Top 10. Two tracks from the new First Choice LP ”So Let Us Entertain You” debut…more tracks to follow….Ecstasy, Passion & Pain moves into the Top 20 for the first time. ….and Jackie Robinson slips to #26—but will rebound up when NYC discovers her record. Both will go Top 10. Next week, a battle for chart supremacy betweeen DIANA and DONNA. There will be a clearcut winner—but only by one measly point: 77 to 76!!! Which DIVA wins??? All will be revealed…. There’s a major debut @ #8 next week (damn nice for a first week placing!!) and there are more new titles by Silver Convention, First Choice, Van McCoy, Marvin Gaye, Louis Ramirez, Maynard Ferguson, Fay Hauser, Billy Ocean, The New Ventures, Brass Construction, The Brothers, & Maxine Nightingale…(and you thought that Maxine’s hit wasn’t a disco record!!! Yikes, neither did I!!! But this is charted by the folks that once upon a time listed Captain & Tennilles’ Love Will Keep Us Together!!! So, that might give you a clue….. __________________________________________________ ___ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #73: 3/27/76 (Thanks to shootyourshot as always, for providing this chart .) (NEW YORK) Midland International has just released the new Silver Convention LP and there are four good dance cuts, including the current single, “Get Up And Boogie The strongest of the four, though, is “You’ve Got What It Takes.” It has the most commercial sound and is somewhat different from the “Fly, Robin, Fly” sound. The other two, “No, No, Joe” and “San Francisco Hustle” retain the group’s well-known sound. Bill Owens, DJ at Lost and Found in Wash., D.C. says he’s excited about “Black Sun,” a cut on the soundtrack LP “Space 1999,” scheduled for release this week. RCA is also going to put out a longer version for the discos on a 12-inch disk. Also released by the label is the Memphis Horn’s “Hang On Music” album. There’s a good cut in “80 Proof Red” which has that good old Memphis soul sound. London has just released the new Olympic Runners’ “Don’t Let Up” LP. There are several strong cuts: “The Kool Gent,” “Party Time Is Here To Stay” and “The Runners File.” This is the best LP the group has had to date and a lot of the credit goes to the exceptional playing of Pete Wingfield. Turbo has just released the new Brother To Brother LP, “Let Your Mind Be Free.” The best cuts include the title song and “Chance With You.” Bobby DJ of Infinity here is getting good response to it already. “Joni” and “Groovy Day” are also good. The group has a much tighter sound on the LP compared with its last. TK is releasing singles on its subsidiary labels: “Get Off You Aahhh! And Dance” by Foxy (part 1 & 2) which is basically an instrumental and has a Latin sound featured and L.B. Bonanza’s “Funky Philly” (Marlin) and the vocal version “Rockin’ In the Cradle Of Liberty” (Marlin). The “Funky Philly” side is the stronger of the two and goes through a number of changes with several good breaks. The song was arranged and co-produced by John (The Monster) Davis. Brunswick has just released “Caution by September, a female group that just belts throughout the song. A good funky uptempo track that compliments strong vocals. __________________________________________________ __ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You THIS IS IT GOTTA GET AWAY (FROM YOU BABY) NO, NO, JOE/ YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES AFTER THE DANCE/ I WANT YOU LOVE REALLY HURTS WITHOUT YOU BROTHERS THEME/ UNDER THE SKIN/ MAKE LOVE RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM I’LL GO WHERE YOUR MUSIC TAKES ME RAIN FOREST YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE & I’M GONNA LET MY HEART DO THE WALKING!!!!! ___________________________- Today's chart was typed while listening to: 1) MASTERCUTS BREAKS (cd #1 & #2) 2) WE CAN WORK IT OUT: COVERS & COOKIES OF LENNON, McCARTNEY & THE BEATLES (CD #1 has full-length tracks and cd #2 has a mix…it’s the kewl English DJ stuff-- like they did with Stevie Wonder..) |

| What year did "Rat Rapping" hit the Billboard chart? Did it hit number one? Maybe Jerry Bonham can play it at the next Troc reunion. He could do a mix with "Muskrat Love" |

So in other words ... none of the individual charts reported "COMMON THIEF " all by itself .... on its own merit . Do any of the charts ever do this ? That is , report one song of an artist (using Vicki Sue as an example ) like "TURN THE BEAT AROUND " at say #2 and then also report another song , like "COMMON THIEF ", further down ...say at #9 ??? I was also going to point out that I suspected the success of Eddie Drennon's DO IT NICE AND EASY had something to do with its similiarity /mixability with Johnny Taylor's DISCO LADY " which would be ironic that Eddie would therefore chart while Johnny gets the snub ......but then this week I see they BOTH fall off together .....so, I would say "never mind" ..... except that Eddie Drennon's COLLAGE lp continues to chart .... and it could likewise be because of its containment of "DO IT NICE AND EASY " and other similar "DISCO LADY " ish grooves ...... ***** |

Ed Rothschild is also credited among others by Brian Chin on the Rhino Disco Box for the "Pre Disco floor shaking 45's" another great list. * THE GAME IS OVER – Brown Sugar (Clydie King) (D) http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/6619_0_2_0_C/ I went digging on my 7" crates 8) and found this cut I knew I had but had completely forgotten, it is produced and arranged by Vince Montana, with a very similar sound to the Trammps "Stop and Think about it" if Clydie King is the singer, she's got a beautiful soulful voice that has me playing this one over and over while I type :P this is pure early Disco, by the way last time I checked for this 7" back in '04 the promo sold for $115.00 and 154.00 USD, apparently a fave "Northern Soul" tune. |

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... THE BEST WEEK EVER (so far)???!!! :D :D :D :D :-? (oh to have a time machine whisk me back to this week in disco history!!!...) Well, Miss Ross reigns Supreme once more (4th week) but by only 1 point; Miss Summer is nipping at her heels and next week we get another cliffhanger with one measly point once again separating #1 and #2 (77 points vs. 76 points)…who will win this time??? Hmmmmmmmm….. MISS ROSS stats: A= #2; B= #3; C= #9; D= #3; E= #1; F= #1 MISS SUMMER stats: A= #5; B= #1; C= #4; D= #4; E= #2; F= #4 And THE TRAMMPS stats: A= #1; B= #2; C= #1; D= #2; E= n/c; F= #2 (next week chart E finally charts this!!!) Major debut for MISS MELBA MOORE with “This Is It” at #8, topping producer/writer Van McCoy’s 3 debut titles this week; (he also produced Melba’s cover of “Make Me Believe In You” @ #20 and his own “Night Walk” debuts @ #24) [for the record, Melba’s cover is very disappointing compared to the stellar Patti Jo version; certainly not as danceable; I just listened to the whole “This Is It” LP and the best number on it, apart from the title cut, is “Free” which, to the best of my knowledge, won’t ever chart here [I'm wrong--it does] ; several other titles will, including the very odd “Play Boy Scout” with its French lyrics (what the f*** is this about, huh??) and chorus in English "Play Boy Scout" (my cd says “Playboy Scout”!!) and “Brand New”] ECSTASY, PASSION & PAIN jump up to #5 with ”Touch And Go” their first “extended Tom Moulton remix”…. EP& P and Melba have the only new titles in the Top 10; next week, no new titles will be admitted to the Top 10; they just rearrange their rankings—big hits, baby!!! LA’s chart E admits a couple odd ducks into the mix this week; both very poppy high energy AEROBICS tempo radio records: LOVE REALLY HURTS WITHOUT YOU, an early effort by Billy Ocean and another by Maxine Nightingale: RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM; I bpm-ed these last week and they are real fast: Billy is approx. 140 bpm and Maxine is around 150 bpm!!!! LA musta got some good speed in this week!!!! :P –But then again they are both real short—so you don’t have to maintain that tempo for too long!!! Next week some new titles chart by Strutt, Kokomo, El Coco, Marvin Gaye, Silver Convention, the New Ventures, and even Donna Summer gets a separate listing for yet another track from her smash “A Love Trilogy” LP. Mr. Moulton has a particularly loooooooooooooooong column today…so I’m gonna shut up and do that now. __________________________________________________ _ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #74: 4/03/76 (Thanks to shootyourshot, as always, for providing me this column) (NEW YORK) “Make Love To Me” by Fire & Rain (20th Century) sounds like a monster disco number—one which carries definite signs of being inspired by Sylvia and Donna Summer. A good rhythm section, the sensual quality of the female vocals and the echo produces a very moody, haunting feel to the record. Also, the disco version has a nice instrumental take in the middle. Brunswick has a winner with a new album by a group called Strutt, whose sound you can best describe as Brass Construction with an even higher energy and belt out vocals. The strongest cut on the LP is the title song, “Time Moves On,” while close behind are the numbers “Front Row Romeo” (instrumental and vocal) and “Funky Baby Feet.” The material is varied, yet equally strong. Overall, the group has a versatile sound. Also give credit to Benny Clark for a fine production job….Brunswick also has disco potential in another new LP, “Straight Up” by Exit 19. Strongest cut here is the title number, once again. The group is self-contained and features a strong horn sound. Bobby”DJ” Guttadaro at the Infinity here reports strong response to two new dance singles. The first is the French import of “Tubular Bells” by Champs Boys Orchestra (Vogue), which sounds just like “Love To Love You Baby.” The second disk is “Numero 6” by Bobby Rodriguez on Fania distributed Vaya. The record is a good reflection of the Latin sound catching on in clubs these days. UA [ it was actually Blue Note] will be releasing the new Marlena Shaw LP in April. There are two strong cuts: “It’s Better Than Walking Out” and a song the Spinners had on their last LP, “Love Has Gone Away.” Both are exceptionally strong and will put Marlena into the commercial market. The LP was produced by Bert DeCoteaux and Tony Sylvester. The two good dance cuts on the new Boz Scaggs “Silk Degrees” LP (Columbia) are “Lowdown” and “What Can I Say.” They are not the usual disco sound and are not over produced. Tempo–wise they’re a lot like “Swearin’ To God.” Jackie Thomas has left her job at Columbia to join Warner Bros., where she will take over the responsibilities of disco promotion. She has some strong disco product to work. The new Ashford & Simpson “Come As You Are” LP, has several strong cuts: “One More Try,” the strongest, “Caretaker,” “Tell It All,” “It Came To Me” and “Sell The House.” “Heat For The Feets,” a new LP on Chrysalis label (distributed by WB) by Lee Garrett has two strong cuts: “Heart Be Still,” which is popular now by Carl Graves, and “How Can I Be A Man.” Also there’s the new First Choice LP “So Let Us Entertain You,” which has four good cuts: “First Choice Theme/ Ain’t He Bad” medley, “Gotta Get Away” and “Are You Ready For Me?” which the girls sing in harmony throughout. The LP overall is still in the same vain [vein] as their last LP. P.I.P. has just released the new Moonlion single [doesn’t give the title???] which is also out on a 12-inch disco disk (at 45 r.p.m.). It is another standard done in the formula style of Bubblegum disco (high hat, background girls and lots of bass). The sound is wearing on a lot of DJs, but the audiences seem to still like it.   :P :P      The Lettermen :-? (Capitol) have a new single, which is an updated disco version of their first hit (back in the early Sixties) “The Way You Look Tonight.” The arrangement is almost exactly like Gloria Gaynor’s “Never Can Say Goodbye,” and the group does a fine job. The song is very short: 2:24. ABC has just released the Fifth Dimension’s single version of Diana Ross’s “Love Hangover.” It looks like they will have their first hit in a long time with this one. [got that one wrong!!!] This version is harder sounding than Ross’s version and a number of DJs have already started playing it with successful results. Walter Gibbons of Galaxy 21 here is getting strong response to “10%"[“Ten Percent”] by Double Exposure. :D Ken Cayre of Salsoul records has been testing it there for several weeks now to get a reaction and it will soon be available. Walter also has been playing “Movin’ Like A Superstar” (American Ariola). It is now available in this country. There will be a special 12-inch disco-disk of the single coming out shortly. The new Julie Budd single is “Music To My Heart” on the Tomcat label. This one is much stronger than her last [“One Fine Day”] and it’s very much into the Gloria Gaynor sound. “I Get Lifted," the George McCrae song, has been redone by Sweet Music into a vocal and instrumental. The record is getting some action in the Boston clubs and will be released this week on the Wand label. The sound is more r & b and a lot funkier. Casablanca has just released Margaret Singana’s “Where Is The Love” LP. There are two strong cuts: the title cut, which is the same song Betty Wright scored so big with in the discos, and “Love Will Find a Way.” The LP was done in South Africa. Doc Severinsen has a new Epic LP out in “Night Journey.” The title cut is incredible. It is not the sound you would expect from him, and it will undoubtedly by a disco hot [be a disco hit]….Tom Savarese, DJ at 12 West has been getting strong response to several new records: “The Medley” from the Chocolate Boys second LP on Disques Fleur (France); “Ma-Mo-Ah” by the Tony Valor Sounds Orchestra (Brunswick) and “Dancing Free” by Hot Ice on the Rage label. __________________________________________________ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP I’LL GO WHERE YOUR MUSIC TAKES ME YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE I’M GONNA LET MY HEART DO THE WALKING RAIN FOREST GET OFF YOUR AAHH!
