January 17, 1976:

41) (R) SHAKE ME, WAKE ME (When It's Over) - Barbra Streisand
(Columbia 45/ 12' promo) (4 points/ B)
5 weeks on the chart/RETURN (N/A)

I think that was it--5 weeks total.

I'm wondering if La Streisand's dipping her toe into the disco pool might have helped convince Miss Ross to try a dance tune also (the just charted 'Love Hangover"--2/28/76) Streisand was the career role model for Miss Ross--she wanted to be the black Streisand. Berry Gordy tried his best to make this happen. And it did...sorta....but Streisand still has a recording career and Miss Ross has, at the present time, lost hers.

MOTIVATION:

"Hey, Diana..Barbra's on the DISCO CHARTS....uh, she's one-upped ya one more time....." :P

So Streisand was the first DIVA to go disco, Bette Midler got to the charts a couple weeks before Miss Ross. Liza Minnelli never got the hang of this until she worked with the Pet Shop Boys in the Nineties (ER, I guess it was actually 1989)...and then there's CHER...who will hit in 1979...3 years down the pike. THE FIVE DIVAS GAYS WORSHIPPED & ADORED (well, before DONNA, anyway.)

P.S. and now in 2005--BARBRA is back on the Dance charts!!!

so ....shake me wake me then ......'cause it is over !!?? :(

That's too bad . I had only a faint interest in the song ..... because I thought it was probably some poppish , sort of disco song like some others that barely charted then ....figured it probably just got some push in some of the foo-fooey gay bars then :P (we are talking Streisand here)

But now I've heard it.... and what a tremendous surprise !! Flat out disco .... Gloria Gaynor disco .... with a hint of " LADY BUMP ". Playing it over and over right now along with her new one ....

I can't understand why it didn't fair better ????????

By the way ..... did you intentionally leave out Miss Gaynor in those Diva mentions ? ....oh you're talking about the divas who turned to disco group ....

Well the short LP version is not very good, IMHO--but the remix spuces it up nicely as I recall. I only had this in my Napster files--which I lost along the way...

Well, I was thinking of the FIVE DIVAS who were in place before Disco arrived....and frankly, although I liked Miss Gaynor's records---she didn't have the Glamour required to be one of MY ICON DIVAS. That photo of her on the 2nd LP with the sunglasses, the raincoat and the Piano Legs turned me off--bigtime, as Cheney would say...BIGTIME!!!!

 I'll have to lookat that cover again
Ya there was that group of female disco artists who did disco ....but were not really "Divas" .... Claudja Barry .... Grace Jones .... etc.

Still I think Gloria had a bit more of the elegance .. ... & she was the so-called first "QUEEN " of disco .... I even recently had an ol' DJ friend of mine seem surprised when I suggested she had been supplanted by Donna Summer .....

YEP ! Supremes did it too.
SO you got this well written Motown song to start with .... add tons of strings .... strong back up vocals ..... rapidly crashing drums .... organ segments .... BONGO segments .... a killer churning bass line ( honest) .....not to mention the voice of Barbra Streisand doing the Gloria Gaynor .....

well..............it's not bad ....

Thanks to videoskooter, Tall Paul & starsky for the "encouragin' words." :D :D :D

March 6, 1976

Billboard Pop Chart Top 10:
1) LOVE MACHINE (Part 1) – The Miracles
2) ALL BY MYSELF – Eric Carmen
3) DECEMBER, 1963 (Oh, What A Night) – The Four Seasons
4) THEME FROM S.W.A.T. – Rhythm Heritage

7) LONELY NIGHT (Angel Face) – Captain & Tennille
8. 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER – Paul Simon
9) LOVE HURTS – Nazareth
10) YOU SEXY THING – Hot Chocolate

Billboard Soul/R&B Chart #1:
1) BOOGIE FEVER – The Sylvers

(Items in BOLD charted on the Disco charts)

Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: MOVIN' (week #3); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one.

New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (2nd week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= NIGHT AND DAY) (2nd week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= MORE, MORE, MORE) (3rd week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= LOVE HANGOVER) (2nd week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= MORE, MORE, MORE (4th week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in San Francisco Discos:
(#1 = MORE, MORE, MORE) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

You can see that trendy chart B is getting tired of ATC (#13) while she is peaking almost everywhere else. (#1 on 3 of the 6 charts). This is a common occurrence here. Indeed, next week chart B drops ATC—however she bounces back on B in a couple weeks getting a second wind.

The most formidable competition comes from last weeks chart newcomer, MISS DIANA ROSS, charging up from #19 to #2 and charting on all 6 charts (from 16 points last week to 63 this week). You see how few records actually get charted on all 6 charts on a weekly basis—usually one, if we’re lucky, or none at all. MISS ROSS grabs all 6 charts in her second charting week. Quite an accomplishment!! But then she is.... MISS ROSS.

MISS ROSS stats:
A= #9; B= #2; C= #3; D= #1 (2nd week); E= #7; F= #11

VICKI SUE ROBINSON, last weeks #2, drops to #5 (36 points as opposed to 55 last week) because neither LA or SF have discovered her. (Last week VSR got chart help from guest city Boston + all 4 NYC charts). But never fear, VSR will rise again!!!

VSR stats:
A= #4; B= #6; C= #11; D= #7; E= n/c; F= n/c

B.C.G. has lost chart B and is diminished on the other NYC charts –but West Coast charts E & F both rank it @ #3—so it jumps up a point to #3 here also.

MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY maintains its 13th week in the Top 10 (still #2 in both LA & SF discos and #5 in the NYC chart A.

JOHN DAVIS moves NIGHT & DAY into the Top 10 in its second chart week and retains its #1 status on super-picky chart B for a second week.

SPANISH HUSTLE drops a notch to #7—actually adding its first West Coast support (#11 in LA); Once again, chart C has it at #2 (that’s 4 weeks @ #1 and 4 more @ #2 on chart C. Colony likes to do the SPANISH HUSTLE, or so it would seem.

MOVIN’ bounces back into the Top 10 @ #8; Record World shows this as the #1 in their national chart—but its not here, according to the Billboard charts.

2 more records move into the Top 10 for the first time, in addition to Miss Ross & John Davis, MASADA & HEART BE STILL round out the Top 10.

EDDIE KENDRICKS has all 3 titles from his LP tied with 23 points apiece for a bundled #12. Are you happy now, remicks???? :P

THE TRAMMPS slip from #7 down to #14—still only charting #1 on chart A and #9 in SF. Thus far, no NYC retail or LA disco action. But, it too will rise.

Lastly note that SF (chart F) is diggin’ records that left the NYC charts a while back—(EDDIE DRENNON, JIMMY JAMES, PENNY McLEAN). NYC is most often in the forefront—it takes longer for the word to spread to other cities.

Next week—6 records debut, 3 return and we lose a staggering 24 titles—moving our total items from 55 this week down to a mere 43!!! WE GOT HITS, BABY!!!!! :D More of the same titles are charted on each chart giving us more consensus/ less division. Still only 1 record will be on all 6 charts.

New titles chart from PHILLY DEVOTIONS (a cover of a Sixties Little Anthony & The Imperials hit) and SILVER CONVENTION return with a new tune (“THAT’s RIGHT!!!"); English meeskyte TINA CHARLES, GOT CHA, BARRY WHITE, & ECSTASY, PASSION & PAIN round out the debuts. 3 of these 6 will eventually go Top 10.

In a couple weeks, DONNA SUMMER will join the chart;
”A LOVE TRILOGY” is released next week.

So soon we’ll have DIANA vs. DONNA vs. VICKI SUE vs. ANDREA TRUE on the Ladies side
---VS. THE TRAMMPS on the Men’s side in a knockdown battle for chart supremacy. Thus far, I ask—has it ever been better than this? Well, has it???? :D

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #70: 3/06/76

(Today’s column was typed out and emailed to me by shootyourshot. The comments are his. Thanks again!!! :D )

Casablanca-distributed Oasis Records is rush-releasing Donna Summer’s “A Love Trilogy” LP recorded in the famed Musicland Studios in Munich.

Side A has one long (17:55) cut in “Try Me, I Know We Can Make It,” and the only similarity between it and Summer’s last hit are the number of changes and breaks. It’s also much faster and harder-sounding than her previous effort.

Side B has four cuts, and they’re all strong disco numbers. There’s “Could It Be Magic” (the Barry Manilow hit), which will probably be the single, “Wasted” and “Come With Me.” Although “Could It Be Magic is handled as an uptempo record, the feel of the song is not destroyed. [I know what you’re thinking. Tom said there were four tracks on the B-side but he only mentioned three.. So, I checked my copy of the LP, and the fourth track is “Prelude To Love.”]

The orchestration climaxing the Manilow version is built up much sooner and prolonged here, and the result is a much stronger climax. Overall, the disk stacks up as one of the strongest LPs coming out of Germany.

“Wet Weekend” by the Rock Gazers (Pilgrim, a local label) is a good instrumental with a nice horn sound throughout; rhythm-wise it has the sound of “What A Difference A Day Makes.”

There are two records being released this week that, while recorded here, have a strong Philly sound. “Let The People Talk” by the Steptones (Chains), with lots of strings and strong R&B vocal tracks going along a generally medium tempo and “You’re My One Weakness Girl” by the Street People (Vigor), with Bert De Coteaux once again coming through with a fine arrangement.

The latter record has a very up tempo and a fully orchestrated sound.

Bobby (DJ) Guttadaro at the Infinity Club here says that there’s been strong reaction to the “Thank You Early Bird” LP by Gloria Lynne (ABC). Word is that the label is now considering releasing the title cut as a single, based on the response its been getting.

Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: MOVIN' (week #4); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (3rd week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= TURN THE BEAT AROUND/ COMMON THIEF) (1st week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= MORE, MORE, MORE) (4th week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= LOVE HANGOVER) (3rd week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= STREET TALK (1st week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Washington, D.C. Discos:
(#1 = MORE, MORE, MORE) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

”I’M MISS ROSS, BITCH” (Hear Me ROOOOAAAR…. watch me SOOOOOAR!!!) :D :D :D :P

By some quirk of the chart gods, Colony Records (C) decided not to chart TURN THE BEAT AROUND this week and Downstairs Records (B) chose not to chart MORE, MORE, MORE….thus paving the way for MISS ROSS to glide right into the number one position in her 3rd week on the chart. Ironically, next week both titles are back on C & B respectively. Then we get three DIVAS in a three-way bitch fight for the coveted #1 spot!!! :D

MISS ROSS stats this week:
A= #5; B= #3; C= #4; D= #1 (3rd week); E= #3; F= #10

ANDREA TRUE stats this week:
A= #3; B= n/c; C= #1; D= #5; E= #2; F= #1

VICKI SUE ROBINSON stats this week:
A= #2; B= #1; C= n/c; D= #3; E= #10; F= #5

In addition to ANDREA TRUE & VICKI SUE, 2 other records have 5 chartings:
B.C.G. (Bob Crewe Generation) is #1 on E (LA) and places everywhere except chart B; 45 points merits #4.
Conversely, JOHN DAVIS charts NIGHT AND DAY everywhere except chart E; 34 points on 5 charts earns a #5 ranking.

SPANISH HUSTLE is again #2 on chart C (9th week at either #1 or #2 there!!!)It also has 34 points on 4 charts for a #6 placement.

HEART BE STILL is a NYC retail only item thus far --also earning 34 points on 3 charts for the #7 ranking.

THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO jumps back into the Top 10 @ #8. Next week, the TRAMMPS finally get some retail action and make their move upwards for a nice long run.

MIGHTY HIGH falls out of the Top 10 for the first time after 13 weeks of charting Top 10 (15 weeks total on the chart).

I LOVE MUSIC has left the chart after a 20 week run. BAD LUCK holds the record for longest run with 24 consecutive weeks.

Two auspicious debuts, one from PHILLY DEVOTIONS and one from SILVER CONVENTION both grab chartings from all 3 NYC retailers (BCD) for #13 & #14 rankings, respectively.

Another classic debuts @ #33—TOM MOULTON’S mix of ECSTASY, PASSION & PAIN’S TOUCH AND GO; then there’s TINA CHARLES, who returns with I LOVE TO LOVE, a followup to her fall of ’75 hit YOU SET MY HEART ON FIRE. This is gonna be BIG on exactly one and only one chart—B (Downstairs Records) loves it; no one else notices Tina this time out.

3 covers jump into the Top 20:
MORE leaps up 27 points to #17 (BCD)
STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT moves 19 points up to #18 (Chart F (Washington, D.C). adds support in addition to the usual LA charting).
ELEANOR RIGBY moves up 26 points to #19 (B & E chart it.)

MOVIN’ @ #23 is a real oddity in that Record World is charting it # 1 for the 4th week in its National Disco File Top 20.

Lastly, BARRY WHITE’s wonderful LET THE MUSIC PLAY gets one point for a #15 on chart E…Barry seems to have moved from the Disco charts to the radio-oriented charts; this will peak @ #4 R&B and #32 Pop…but will sadly not chart here again.

Next week, 10 records debut, 5 return, and 8 drop off giving us 48 titles. 3 records enter the Top 10 for the first time.
Among the debuts are another title from TINA CHARLES, ("the Rachel Dratch of Disco") :P plus PHASE 2, JACKIE ROBINSON, FUSSY CUSSY, JOHNNIE TAYLOR, THE JONESES, EDDIE DRENNON, EL COCO, CAMP GALORE………………… and drumroll please…………………………………..
The return/ second release of MISS DONNA SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

They say there’s always room at the top, but…….next week 3 records chart on all 6 charts with either 74 or 75 points apiece. Hmmmmmmmmm……. Do I smell a tie???? Oh, NO, NOT A TIE!!!!????? But at which position, #1 or #2??? All will be revealed………………

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #71: 3/13/76

(NEW YORK) – Van McCoy’s “Night Walk” single, taken from a soon to be released album, is probably the most beautiful song he’s ever recorded. While the song has the same type feel as his “African Symphony,” it’s much more melodic. The predominant instruments are oboe and a Moog. The single version is shorter than the 5:07 LP cut.

Talk is already going around the clubs here about the new Supremes’ “Let Your Heart Do The Walkin’ ” [“I’m Gonna Let MY Heart Do The Walking”] single, to be released this coming week. …..Alec, at Adam’s Apple, DJ David Todd says he’s getting strong response on “One More Try” by Ashford & Simpson. The song is off their latest LP….Todd’s top record this week, though, is “Gimme Some Mo’” by Red Hot, Ltd. (Paula). The record, around for some time now, has begun to pick up steam.

Also gaining is “Born To Get Down” by the Muscle Shoals Horns (Bang). The Record Pool here received 12-inch disco versions of the song recently and, already, Mr. Laughs’ DJ Freddie Mendoza and Friends Again DJ John Colon are saying that it’s one of their hottest audience response disk…..Melba Moore’s “This Is It” single, title cut from her forthcoming LP, will be released in two weeks. It was written and arranged by Van McCoy and it sounds like her most commercial effort to date. Buddah plans on releasing a 12-inch disco disk, which will run 4:44. The sound of the record is unmistakably McCoy.

Columbia has just released “Disco Fever” by Tina Charles. It’s a followup to “You Set My Heart On Fire” and it’s very uptempo with strong vocal and horn tracks. The Joneses’ new single on Mercury is “Child Of Mine.” The song is very mellow for the group giving them a different sound. ….Friends and Co. here have released “Don’t Stop the Music” by the new group Got-Cha. The sound is melodic and mellow. There is a vocal and instrumental version.

Today's chart was typed while listening to:

CARNE SINGS McCOY (1995) – Jean Carne sings the music of Van McCoy (cheapo, cheapo production ruins most of this CD by the wonderful Jean Carne singing the wonderful Van McCoy songbook. A drum machine and a Casio (well you know what I mean) keyboard seem to be the only instruments!!!!!!!! And her son raps on “The Hustle”!!!!!!! For SHAME!!!!! :x :o :-?

And once again……
DEEP BEATS: ESSENTIAL 70s MODERN SOUL; DANCEFLOOR CLASSICS, VOL. 1 – (The Moments ("I called ya NINE TIMES--but you had a busy line"), The Carstairs, Street People, Pat Lundi, etc.) LOVE THIS ONE!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Alec, at Adam’s Apple, DJ David Todd says he’s getting strong response on...
Hey, I went to Adam's Apple once, :P it was a great club with lots of flashy, classic Disco people, it had separate dance floors above each others, you could stand by a bar and watch the action on both dance floors at once, some of the best Dancers I've ever seen, funny no one entered this one on the club section :o

Billboard Soul/R&B Chart #1:
1) DISCO LADYJohnnie Taylor (week #1
This record had an interesting chart history . A HUGE record .... I believe it was the first ever certified two-million selling single in the history of 45's ..... a disco song ( or is this yet another one of those "was it or wasn't it " tunes :P ) , very much all about disco and movin' it in and movin' it out .... & with " disco " in its title no less ... and yet it faired very poorly on the disco charts . Already it is #1 on the soul chart but yet to debut here .... :( :-?

"Disco Lady" charts once and only once on the Disco chart--on Melody Song Shops this coming week--3/20/76. There seems to have been a siphoning off of the slower bpm-ed records to the radio; maybe there's too much product...but the same thing is happening to Barry White's "Let The Music Play"--another record in the 100 bpm range--that is danceable--but maybe at this point in time--not fast enough for the disco charts??? I don't know the answer--just a guess.

Well, the record for fastest ascent to #1 will probably never be broken at this point--Consumer Rapport's "Ease On Down The Road" DEBUTED at #1. Try to top that!!!!
