1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Eddie Kendricks charts 4 titles this week with 3 of those in the Top 10!!! (#7-9-10-25) This must be a first for us!!! I didn't check it--but rather rare, I think.

This is what I still yet don't get Marky ......four songs from the same album ..... if they were bundled together ...wouldn't Eddie be at #1 ???? :roll: :-?

oh my pal remicks!!! let me try to 'splain.

Yes, technically if I bundled the 4 Eddie tracks together he would tie B.C.G for #2 with 52 points....BUT...

I realized this when I bundled before (Labelle's "LADY MARMALADE" & "WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU") that I was giving one of the records more points than it actually earned. Each chart lists the Kendricks songs in different combos....

(for the record, Record World shows the Eddie Kendricks records (3 titles together) peaking at #7...so I don't want to overstate their impact. One track goes to #5 next week...and then they all fade away...so...)

Let's review...

2/21/76 chart:

A = IT'S NOT WHAT WHAT YOU GOT/ HE'S A FRIEND/ CHAINS (all 3 titles bundled @ #5 for 11 points.
B= IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT (#7 for 9 points)
C= HE'S A FRIEND/ GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT (#3 for 13 points)
D= CHAINS (#3 for 13 points)
E= none
F= IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT (#10 for 6 points)

A= 11
B= 9
C= 13
D= 13
E= 0
F= 6
______
Total = 52

But I decided to give each track its individual ranking--unless they tie in point totals (which will start to happen)..

HE'S A FRIEND = 11 (A) + 13 (C) + 6 (F) = 30
IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT = 11 (A) + 9 (B) +6 (E) = 26
CHAINS = 11 (A) + 13 (D) = 24
GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT = 13 (C) = 13

This way I can track the actual points given each title.

As I mentioned before, I bundled the 2 Labelle tracks together in my charts--but in reality when I did the year-end rankings I found that LADY MARMALADE had earned 253 points for its mentions while WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU had only earned 149.

So by bundling them together, I had sorta overstated the chart power of one title. The Billboard charts like to bundle so it can list more titles. Everything from a certain source is bundled--especially on chart A...the others pick and choose on weekly whims (or so it seems).

However, if an entire LP is charting (Salsoul Orchestra, for example.. soon "A LOVE TRILOGY" ) with "all cuts" or "entire LP" stated, it's all bundled together. This becomes problematic with some upcoming LPS--particulary THE BROTHERS "DON'T STOP NOW"...a bunch of different tracks are listed individually or in different combos but some charts just say "DON'T STOP NOW" - The Brothers (RCA LP)--not "ENTIRE LP" or "ALL CUTS"..just the title of the LP which is also the title of a certain track....I'm stopped in my charting tracks trying to decide whether to bundle it all or list it separately.

What would you do? :o

I understand the problem .....in some cases, bundling seems fair . Seems like the some total of any given project should be combined to reflect that artist's collective current club impact. For instance if Eddie Kendricks is going strong in various regions ...but with different songs in each region ...adding them together reflects how well he is doing nationally because of all these several cuts getting play from this one project.

In the case of Diana Ross's Chic produced album . Were "I'm Coming Out " and "Upside Down " combined as a singular Diana Ross disco effort ??
Or did they chart seperately ??

And then there's a case like the THANK GOD IT's FRIDAY ST . Do all those songs get bundled as one project ? Then because of the universal success of "LAST DANCE " every other song on the album gets to ride Donna's coattails and technically all the songs make it to #1 too ...... Diana Ross has a #1 hit ...with "LIVIN' LOVIN' GIVIN' as does Paul Jabara with "DISCO QUEEN "

So I'm no help at all ...... :roll: .. it is a tough one to sort out ..... and my head hurts ........

Piano"(I think)

dance" and Patti Brooks "after
dark"-these were the two that
got most of the play.In fact,at
one point Patti overtook the
chart listing in Billboard for the TGIF LP-but I differ to
Marky for the definitive answer!

What was so great about the
forefathers of disco,was that
they would play LP cuts-they
were adventurous and fearless.How many times
did the DJ and their audience
do the work for the labels
by discovering the next single?
Towards the mid to late 80's DJ's would stop this trend-unless there was a 12" mix
in their hands,fuhgettaboutit.

I didn't realize that 'He's A Friend' had such huge singles back then. That Philly/Norman Harris sound certainly worked its magic. Then again, if you have your record company really promoting your work, you tend to get more airplay. I wish Motown/Universal would stop messing around with compilation after compilation of Kendricks stuff and release his LPs. He's a Friend paired with Goin Up In Smoke would make an awesome 2 on 1 CD.

It seems like charts A, E & F should be taken at their word for which cuts are working for them . These are the specific songs the DJ's are choosing to spin in their clubs .

Charts B,C, & D are stores reporting what's going out the door . Now it seems unlikely that each time they sell an Eddie Kendricks album ..... they are asking, "And for which songs are you buying this album ?? " ...and then keeping track of that info .....
Seems like once a person is committed to buying the whole album ( as opposed to just a single song on a 12" or 45) they are buying it because of the potential of the entirety of the package . IOW ... They want every song to be found there ....


So .......what about that ....Mr Fong????

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: MOVIN' (week #2); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the 6 Billboard charts into one.

New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.

Tom Moulton column 2/28/76:
“Stacking up as the hottest sound this week is the “Love Hangover” cut on Diana Ross’ new album…..you recognize a similarity between Ross & Donna Summer [!!!!]….when played in discos, with the volume up and the highs coming through, it should prove a natural winner.”

Fred Bronson; Billboard Book of Number One Hits:
“she [Miss Ross] rebounded with a number one single [“Mahogany”]…for a follow-up, Motown went with another ballad “I Thought It Took a Little Time (But Today I Fell in Love).” The first single from the DIANA ROSS LP, it was moving slowly up the chart when people began to take notice of another track on the album, “Love Hangover.”

Among those taking notice were the Fifth Dimension, who had reorganized since the departure of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. Signed to ABC Records, the Dimension released a single of “Love Hangover.”

Motown reacted quickly by rushing out Diana’s single. Both versions entered the Hot 100 on April 3, 1976; Diana debuted at 78 and the Fifth Dimension came in at 95. Three weeks later the Fifth Dimension had peaked at number 80.”

The Trammps move their still English import “That’s Where The Happy People Go” into the Top 10 for the first time. Ranking # 7 with 29 points (15 from A and 14 from F—no retail/ no LA action yet.

John Davis debuts his disco version of Cole Porter’s “Night And Day” @ #17; his LP is comprised of all Cole Porter tracks done in a disco style. This is one standard cover that will get good traction here on this chart.

Another movie song “More” from the 1963 Italian shockumentary “Mondo Cane” debuts @ #35 by Carol Williams on the Salsoul label. Was there a 12” on this??? It’s charting only in Boston this week.

Note the label on #54 “Thank You Baby” by Leone (says ‘Leon”) Thomas. Yes, it’s the same boxing impresario Don King, who musta been in the record business at this time and who later propelled Mike Tyson to heavyweight champion of the world.

The Pearls from England chart another old standard “I’ll See You In My Dreams”—not to be confused with another old chestnut, “I’ll Be Seeing You” that Jeff Evans charted a couple weeks back. Have we run out of old standards to discofy yet, guys??? The answer is obviously , NO!!!!!!!!! :roll: :o :-? :P

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #69: 2/28/76

(NEW YORK) –Stacking up as the hottest sound this week is the “Love Hangover” cut on Diana Ross’ new album. Although the song starts slowly, it soon breaks into a faster sound, with a brief hand-clapping segment leading the way. Eventually, the listener is given a group sound with Ross singing the leads. Interestingly, earlier in the song, you recognize a similarity between Ross and Donna Summer.

This is the closest thing to heavy soul that the Motown songstress has ever done and it seems that the track is deliberately laid back so as not to make it too strong a sound. When played in discos, with the volume up and the highs coming through, it should prove a natural winner.

Midland International has just released Universe City’s debut LP which has two strong dance cuts in “Can You Get Down” and “Touch Me.” The “Can You Get Down” cut has a strong middle drum break, which will undoubtedly win attention in clubs.

The album was recorded here and partially in Philadelphia, and it features a strong horn sound with belting out vocals. At times, a good rock feel also surfaces.

Epic has just released the Temprees’ “I Found Love On A Disco Floor” single. The group, well known for ballads, has an up and bouncy number here and it comes off extremely well.

The Florida Disco DJ Assn., following its third meeting on the setting up of a Record Pool, has begun requesting that promotional product (25 copies of LPs and 50 copies of single releases) be sent to its headquarters in Miami—P.O. Box 396, Miami, Fla. 33145.

Bo Crane, spokesman, also tells us that RCA has slated a product presentation for members at the Honey For The Bears Monday (1). Disks scheduled for release over the next few months will be spotlighted.

Bell, a Detroit label, is creating some good vibes with its “Let It Move” single by the Colours. The record is a good instrumental featuring a solid sax track. There are also some background vocals. Over all, the sound is different and very melodic.

Roulette in finally releasing Ecstasy, Passion & Pain’s “Touch And Go” single. The long version, available on the flip side of the commercial disk will also debut the label’s use of 12-inch promotional disks. Most DJs who have heard the song have been asking when it was going to be released. The answer is this week. [“A Tom Moulton Mix”, BTW]
