starsky, the answer to your question would be "Helplessly" by Moment Of Truth.....

June 26, 1976: DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton:

"This week Salsoul releases the new Moment Of Truth single ”So Much For Love” (short and long versions). This is a mellower sound for the group, than its last hit ”Helplessly”, but it still has the sound that made it popular. There will also be a 12-inch disco disk of the long version with “Helplessly” on the other side. The disk will be commercially available."

This is where I write something about "the best laid plans of mice & men" or some other cliche'....

OK, I didn't get the 9/25/76 chart posted ---BECAUSE they turned the electricity off in our office on Saturday to do some rewiring and on Sunday our server was still down...so I couldn't access the site.

But it's all been typed & saved in Word--just needs some editing for typos and should be up before next weekend--cuz that's when they are painting and recarpeting the office and again, I won't be able to post anything....

NEW YORK—Greg Carmichael, producer and owner of Greg Records, has once more teamed with Patrick Adams to release “Love Bug” by Bumble Bee Unlimited. Adams not only wrote and arranged the tune, but all the voices are his. The track was slowed down to put on the voices, then played back at normal speed to create the sounds made famous by Ross Bagdasarian and the Chipmunks.

The soundtrack is a combination of Silver Convention and Andrea True Connection with a nice string ensemble melody playing throughout. There is also a pleasant percussion break with guitar that builds back to the string ensemble. The record is commercially available as a regular 45 and a 12-inch disco disk, with a 7:02-minute version backed with a five-minute version.

Meanwhile, the label which has had some New York success with Sammy Gordon’s “Making Love” earlier this year (it was just released in England on Polydor) has added color to the label and now calls it Red Greg.

The recently formed record pool in Washington, D.C., now has an office. The address is Capitol Area Record Pool, 1536 16th St., N.W., Suite 7, Washington D.C. 20036. All mail should be sent to the attention of Bill Owens. There are 20 members in the pool at present, including several deejays from the Baltimore area.

Strawberry Records (local New York label) has released a 12-inch disco disk by Lady Rose. The record, titled “Dream Express,” is a happy, bouncy song about getting on a train for a happiness trip. There is a nice break with rhythm and voices that is interesting.

Vigor has released the new Street People LP titled, “Street People.” There are a couple good cuts, plus the two hits, “Never Get Enough Of Your Love” and “You’re My One Weakness, Girl,” both of which had been recorded a year prior to their release. “Gotta Get Back With You” has the group’s rhythm sound and is vocally reminiscent of the Four Tops. “Re-Run” from a vintage movie, is very up and exciting with a nice melodic hook. “Wanna Spend My Whole Life With You” is the strongest cut on the LP, and also sounds like the Four Tops. Galloping congas and sitar are featured throughout. This group possesses a magic that comes across on records.

Atlantic Records has picked up the rights on “Daddy Cool,” the hot German single by Boney M on the Hansa label. This all-black quartet of three girls and a guy have a smash on its hands with this tune. The drums, bass and strings have that Silver Convention sound, and with strong horns and extra percussion, it takes the Munich sound a step further. This one is destined to catch on fast. An LP will also be out shortly.

LTD label in Canada has a strong instrumental single, “Gold Connection,” by Harold Butler & The Connection. This is another record that has captured the Munich sound with a good melodic hook. There is also a discomix on the flip side, but this lacks the excitement of the shorter version. An LP on the group will be released later this month.

Columbia (Canada) has released a good record called “Disco Train” by Jerry Nix. The disk is a cross between Silver Convention and B.T. Express. The track is funky and the voices are laid back to create an interesting contrast.

Midland International will release another hot LP this week. “Touch of Class” by the group of the same name, contains the disco version of the group’s hit “I’m In Heaven,” plus “You Got To Know Better,” which is a strong mid-tempo ballad that keeps building with excitement. “I Love You Pretty Baby” has a pop/Latin sound. It is a pretty, floating melody that shows off the group’s harmony. There is a strong percussion break in the record. “One Half As Much” is very uptempo with a pop/soul Philadelphia sound. “You Got Nowhere To Come” is funkier, and the group’s vocal performance is just as strong with this sound as it is with pop. This solid debut album features arrangements and production by John Davis.

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... well IS it????)

[It just occurred to me that due to my erratic typing schedule and the delays caused by the major changes in the way Billboard reported the charts, the Bee Gees “You Should Be Dancing” has technically been #1 here for almost the span of a WHOLE YEAR!!!! YIKES!!! I typed its first week @ #1 (July 24, 1976) on July 30, 2006…and now almost a whole year later, “YSBD” has reached its final week at #1. ! Talk about time almost standing still!!!!! No wonder no one comments anymore!!!]

AUTUMN CH-CH-CH-CHANGES???—Will There Ever Be Another #1?????

As we close out September of 1976, the Bee Gees retain #1 for the 5th week on Billboard’s National Disco Action Top 40 and the 9th week on the Disco Compilation Consensus Chart. “You Should Be Dancing” has been losing points each week since its peak of 225 out of 240 points on 9/11/76. However, “You Should Be Dancing” still has 32 points more than its closest competitor and is the only record charted on more than 13 charts—15 this week—only missing Montreal.

But, never fear—change is coming! This will be the last week for the Bee Gees at @1. Altogether, there will be 6 more #1 records before the end of 1976: 4 are currently climbing the chart, a 5th debuts on 10/9/76 and the 6th debuts 11/27/76 and reaches #1 on the last chart of December (Christmas Day, actually!!!)

None will come close to achieving the point totals or the number of charts that the Bee Gees have, at least not in 1976. The best weekly score will be 176 points out of 240 with 14 charts—compare that to 225 points on 16 charts (49 more points in a single week!).

BOGUS BUNDLING?

Billboard is currently in a “bundling craze”—adding additional record titles by the same artist in addition to the HIT—making tabulating and typing a nightmare for me! [DRAMA QUEEN!!!] I mean, is “Crime Don’t Pay,” a cut off Carol Douglas’s “Midnight Love Affair,” LP, really getting that much club play that it merits a co-bundling with the hit @ #8? I don't think so. For the record, it’s only mentioned on the NYC chart and as is usually the case—if NYC mentions it—it’s added to the National Chart. The song is a sorta pleasant reworking of “Doctor’s Orders” (sing “Crime Don’t Pay” instead of “Doctor’s Orders” and you will hear the similarity!)

Also, added this week is the flip side of El Coco’s “Let’s Get It Together”—the Frenchified “Fait Le Chat” (Do The Cat)”—charted again only in NYC. “Positive Thinking” a 3rd track from the new Faith, Hope & Charity LP also gets bundled @ #15—courtesy of, you guessed it—NYC!!! Wild Cherry’s “I Feel Sanctified” LP track is added to their hit, courtesy of Pittsburgh. LA adds a 3rd Fantastic Four title, “Hideaway” to their charting of the more popular “Night People/ Lies Divided By Jive (medley). And, finally, the Ritchie Family’s “Baby, I’m On Fire” finally gets a Top 40 mention (courtesy of NYC & SF charts), but next week it’s gone.

I don’t quite get the “bundling” of “Where Is The Love with “Calypso Breakdown” off Ralph MacDonald’s new release. MacDonald actually composed this hit for Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, but its “danceability” seems questionable –unless the 12” version was different than the LP which I have (the timings are exactly the same). “Calypso Breakdown”, however is a treat to hear again (“MORE COWBELL!!!") and I bet an inspiration for my other fave discovery of recent years, Salsoul’s Orchestra’s “My Numbers Up. The percussion is damned similar and just as infectiously danceable. However, regardless of the dance floor merit of this track, the singers on “Where Is The Love” are a very noteworthy group: Patti Austin, Gwen Guthrie, Vivan Cherry, Ray Simpson (Village People, Valerie's brother), Frank Floyd (“Ease On Down The Road”), and someone named Zachary Sanders.

Future hit-finder props to Pittsburgh this week for being the first to chart the new Vicki Sue Robinson release “Daylight” and also for returning “Dazz” back to the chart after a brief mention once before on an Atlanta chart.

A West Coast Thang???

“You + Me = Love” is currently #1 in LA & SF, also charting #2 in Chicago & Houston, #3 in Baltimore-DC & Phoenix, #8 in Boston & # 9 in Philly. This week NYC charts it @ #15, after several weeks of no charting and next week it’s off their chart again!!! How could NYC be immune to the danceability of this MONSTER TRACK???

Thus far, Atlanta, Denver, DETROIT (!!!), Miami, Pittsburgh, Seattle & Montreal have not charted it at all. Conversely, the West coast cities (California, particularly) pretty much dismissed Gloria Gaynor’s “Let’s Make A Deal” dropping it after a few weeks of charting.

“Let’s Just Kiss & Say Goodbye”

Several stellar disco tracks leave the chart for good this week. The alltime chart champ up to this point is the Trammps single "That’s Where The Happy People Go (longest chart run of any record thus far—32 weeks!!!) and 3 tracks from that LP (“Disco Party,” “Can We Come Together” & “Soul Searchin’ Time”) charted for 22 weeks: all go this week. New York City, in particular, charted this record longer than any other record thus far.

Also, the second Donna Summer smash “Try Me, I Know We Can Make It” leaves the chart for good after 23 weeks (3 weeks @ #1)….but Donna’s fans only have to wait 2 more weeks before the third Donna Summer LP is released and Donna’s ascension to replacing Gloria Gaynor on the throne as the reigning QUEEN OF DISCO is closer to realization. The release of “I Feel Love” in 1977 seals the deal.

Considering that “Love To Love You Baby” was released exactly a year earlier (first charted 10/4/75 for 17 weeks reaching #1)…. and then “A Love Trilogy” debuted 3/20/76 and is just leaving the chart the last week in September (it's been coasting on fumes for a month or so...from cities outside the disco A-list)…..now in two weeks time, the 3rd release, “The Four Seasons Of Love,” debuts....You gotta admire the canny timing of Giorgio & Casablanca in making sure that Donna’s music was always in the pipeline to a disco near you. Never fear-- new Donna's almost here!!! Just gone long enough to miss her/ never long enough to forget her......

[For the record, "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It" was ranked #3 on the Disc-O-La Fortune 500 and "That's Where The Happy People Go" was ranked #10....now the highest ranked record on the Disc-O-La Fortune 500 is "Down To Love Town" ranked @ #30]

OK, now let's check to see where the recently charted items rank in the DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ......

[first posted in the 3/26/76 column]

The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of 1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979)

I received a stereo cassette-radio in '76 & I clearly remember being blown away by the intro of 'Car Wash'; I thought it was the best intro I'd ever heard (like those brilliant 60s Motown intros that immediately grabbed your attention - could be the Norman Whitfield influence I s'pose) but the rest of the track was a slight let-down (although it's still good). Rose Royce had a habit of doing this IMHO; it's the same with 'Is It Love You're After' & 'RR Express' - fabulous intros & then, hmm, slight anti-climax.

Hey SanDee,

"Carwash" was never a fave of mine. Oddly, I recently bought a cd set from the UK that's called "Carwash" as there apparently was a club with that name in London...is it still there??? Was it a retro club??? I bet it's closed. The cd is actually kinda good, odd offbeat stuff mixed with "usual suspects" stuff...I think I bought it for the "Morning, Noon & Night" track by Bite Your Granny [always wondered what that would sound like!!!..Bite Your_____ what???!!!]

I do love me some "RR EXPRESS"; have another record by Nytro called "Nytro Express" -- which is the SAME OLD SONG...with "nytro" substituted for "Boogie" express

I remember that club called 'Car Wash' but I never went to it as I'm not that fond of people wearing afro wigs & platform shoes; it's so cliched. I'm just no fun anymore am I!
