I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I find this stuff fascinating...cause it appears so contrary to how we imagine it must have been...and only now, in hindsight, do we know what eventually happened....:(

| ***** This weeks headline : PROOF ! THE BEE GEES WERE A HUGE DISCO ACT !!! Quote:
It took YOU SHOULD BE DANCING all of three weeks from its initial release to go to #1 in the clubs .8) This must have been a startling sight for those within the record labels’ promotion departments who were never at rest in their attempts to ( often ever so slowly ) work their offerings to the heights of "hit" status. I'm sure that this instant popularity of a mainstream act did not go unnoticed by the record companies … who until now probably viewed disco as a musical side show .... This is an important and empowering record within the disco movement … as record labels realized that there was this readymade marketing system of club play that could even be applied to their mainstream acts . This strengthened their desire to acquire club exposure and to provide promos to the record pools in order to do so. It must have been particularly eye opening at the tiny label of RSO ....and it was likely due to the remarkable success of this Bee Gee record that they decided to take on a movie project about disco. The Bee Gees involvement with disco isn't confined to the SNF project , although they'll forever be associated with it .... In truth though , the dance floors were packed in reaction to their music much earlier .... as evidenced here .... on Marky's charts for the summer of 1976 ...... 8) I would also suggest that this record went a long ways toward gaining acceptance of disco music by white American males ….. since this is the first established white male act to really hit it big in this genre . *****

Debuting 2 new tracks from their new LP, "My Love Is Free" & "Everyman"... Double Exposure now has 3 titles charting with its previous smash "Ten Percent" down to #30 this week. The following artists now have 2 titles charting: Tavares, Whispers, Candi Staton, Ritchie Family, Giorgio Moroder, Lalo Schifrin, Moment Of Truth, Silver Convention, Roberta Kelly & Bottom Line. The variable weekly rotating chart F this week is from Houston and is a tad behind the rest of the charts (15 week-old charter Jesse Green is their #1--moving back up to #12 from #32 last week). Michel Polnareff, Silver Convention, & Eli's Second Coming return and Donna Summer's 19 week old LP moves from #40 up to #24!!! Next week, chart F goes even further into the middle American hinterlands with a top 15 from the discos of OMAHA, NEBRASKA!!! (They've just discovered Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes there!!! "Get Dancin' Omaha!!!") (Just kiddin'!!!) Also of note, the Spinners debut their first record to chart on the disco charts (with a great vocal from soon-to-leave the group Phillipe Wynne); the Tom Moulton extended 1976 remix of Moment Of Truth's "Helplessly", originally peaking @ #2 here in 1975-(this is on the other side of their new commercially available 12"); Fatback Band follows-up their "Spanish Hustle" smash with "Night Fever"; Giorgio adds a second title from his debut LP; and "sister act" The Emotions return with their classic "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", from the EW&F/Maurice White production factory. Next week: 8/14/76--a total of 53 itmes chart: 6 titles debut, 8 return and 14 dropoff. The Top 10 admits 3 new items comprised of 7 separate titles--yep, they're all "BUNDLED UP." ;) Debuts include additional titles from Lalo Schifrin, Candi Staton & the Whispers (giving each 3 titles charting!!!); Also there's new stuff from Faith, Hope & Charity, Rare Pleasure and the current #1 R&B tune from Earth, Wind & Fire debuts disco. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __ DISCO MIX by TOM MOULTON Column #91 / August 7, 1976 (Thanks to shootyourshot for providing me with this column.) [NEW YORK] Double Exposure's LP is out this week and response is strong on two cuts, "My Love Is Free" and "Everyman." The new Salsoul Orchestra LP "Nice 'N' Nasty" will be released September 1, with a 12-inch disco disk being rush-released this week on two cuts. "3001" [says ”2001”; technically “Salsoul: 3001”];) and "Nasty" will both be available on disco disk next week. "3001" is an electronic experience with a 747 taking off. It embodies a lot of sound effects and a strong synthesizer sound. These cuts were produced by Vincent Montana, Jr. RCA has released the new Faith, Hope & Charity LP titled "Life Goes On." There are several good cuts. "Your Peace Of Mind" is the strongest. It is also the single. The LP version runs for 6:53 minutes and has the usual McCoy sound and a haunting harmonica solo. "Cherish/ Monday, Monday" medley are nice updated versions of these pop classics. "Life Goes On" is very melodic with the McCoy sound. "Gradually" and "Positive Thinking" are also good, plus the single version of "A Time For Celebration," with their guests Choice Four. The entire album represents a good arranging and production job by Van McCoy. Westbound (distributed by 20th Century Records) will release the new Fantastic Four LP "Night People" at the end of August. There is a strong cut called "Hideaway," which will probably be the single. It is reminiscent of the Detroit Emeralds. "Night People / Lives Divided By Jive" is a 10-minute medley that goes into the Temptations sound. Westbound is also releasing a new Detroit Emeralds LP. This will come in September [ note: it gets delayed] and will feature a remake of the group's super disco classic "Feel The Need In Me." :-D AVI Records has released a new 12-inch disco disk by El Coco. It is "Fait Le Chat (Do The Cat)” b/w "Let's Get It Together." Both have definitely been inspired by MFSB and the Salsoul Orchestra. The group received some recognition from its first LP "Brazil," which was popular in New York City earlier this year. Blue Note is not creating a disco label. [see 7/24/76 column] The company intends to remain essentially a jazz label, releasing disco cuts only when they evolve as such from contemporary jazz albums. This word from George Butler, who heads the label. [Imagine the jazzheads freakin' out that Blue Note was goin' DISCO!!! Funny, no?] __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _ THE COVER LIST Whispering - (an early example of "sampling"??? Night And Day - (this one does get credit on the Dr. Buzzard LP--but I'll be damned if I hear anything more than the title phrase; it's a great Cole Porter classic already charted here by John Davis & the Monster Orchestra earlier in 1976.) Ninety Nine And A Half (Won't Do) - Wilson Picket peaked this @ #13 R&B; #52 Pop in 1966) Summertime - From George Gershwin's 1935 folk opera "Porgy & Bess"; #12 Pop hit for Billie Holiday in 1936; later in 1966-- #7 R&B/ #10 Pop for a funky version by Billy Stewart. I've Got You Under My Skin - Cole Porter standard often performed by Frank Sinatra; #3 Pop hit for Ray Noble in 1936; sung by Virginia Bruce to James Stewart in 1936 MGM film "Born To Dance."; Peaked Pop chart #9 by the Four Seasons in 1966. Arabian Mights (Medley): Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - Fifties novelty tune about this Turkish city's name change; recorded by the Four Lads; Bette Midler did it briefly in her "Live At Last" concert as part of the Vicki Eydie "Around The World" tour medley. Goofy, off-the-wall alternative group, They Might Be Giants, also recorded it in the 1990. Lawrence Of Arabia - Maurice Jarre's Oscar winning theme from the 1962 film; (Jacques Morali added lyrics to the theme) In A Persian Market (Show Me How You Dance) - AMG says it was a classical piece...I think, once again, Jacques Morali added the "Show Me How You Dance" part!!! It's toooo you, Jac-qeeee!!! Nights in White Satin - changed to "Knights" by Moroder and/or the record label--to appeal to the Gays!!!; Jaws- John Williams peaked his Oscar winning 1975 movie theme @ #32 Pop. Could It Be Magic - Inspired by Chopin's "Prelude In C Minor"; #6 Pop hit for Barry Manilow in 1975) Luck Be A Lady - from Broadway musical Guys & Dolls; standard recorded by many singers including Frank Sinatra. Always There - Instrumental by Ronnie Laws & Pressure peaked @ #45 R&B in late '75 - early '76) Love Power - The Sandpebbles peaked #14 R&B/#22 Pop in 1967; later covered by Luther Vandross as the second half of "Power Of Love/ Love Power" (#1 R&B/ #4 Pop) in 1991. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _ OK, now let's check to see where the recently charted items rank in the DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ...... [first posted in the 3/26/76 column] The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by someone named Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of 1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979) DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 Rankings: (Based on items in this weeks chart): 22 charting positions featuring 26 titles #03) TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT #10) THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO #36) TEN PERCENT/MY LOVE IS FREE #92) YOU SHOULD BE DANCING #101) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE #102) CHERCHEZ LA FEMME / SOUR & SWEET #115) HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL/ DON'T TAKE AWAY THE MUSIC #147) CAN WE COME TOGETHER/ DISCO PARTY #157) YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE MINE #160) COULD IT BE MAGIC / COME WITH ME #166) NICE AND SLOW #175) YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE /RUN TO ME #179) YOU + ME = LOVE #219) TROUBLE-MAKER #258.) But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one. New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week. (Is it just for old disco we live???..... Blame It On OMAHA: BEE GEES coulda, woulda, SHOULDA broken records this week!!! But, because the 6th chart F was from-- OMAHA, NEBRASKA-- a tad behind the bigger disco cities --it loses 7 points from it's 85 point peak last week. Because Omaha started a record pool, they were invited to provide the 6th chart. However, there's no telling what records mighta been broken if the 6th chart was from Boston, D.C.,SF or even Toronto.... 2 #1's & 3 #2's gives us 72 points out of a possible 75--but then chart F only adds 6 points out of their 15 ...so we total at 78 for the week.. #1: Bee Gees stats: (78 points) A= #1; B= #2; C= #2; D= #2; E= #1; F= #10 The runners-up: #2: Dr. Buzzard's OSB stats: (64 points) A= #2; B= #1; C= #1; D= #6; E= #6; F= n/c #3: Ritchie Family stats: (51 points) A= #8; B= #3; C= #6; D= #8; E= #4; F= n/c #4: Gloria Gaynor stats: (48 points) A= #3; B= N/C (!); C= #4; D= #4; E= #5; F= n/c--that Downstairs Records did not have chart Miss Gaynor's long-awaited LP the first week it's available, is an ominous sign for her future as Queen of Disco!!!:-o They do chart it next week, however.;) The Whispers move back up to #5 (even though B charted 2 different tracks from their LP); Double Exposure's new tracks from their LP move up to #7; Tavares places one hit @ #6 and the other @ #8, Trammps fall to #9 and, after 18 weeks on the chart, Candi Staton finally cracks the Top 10 @ #10!!!!! She also debuts a 3rd title @ #20 courtesy of the LA chart. MFSB, Ja-Kki & Undisputed Truth fall out of the Top 10 this week--the latter two will return. 6 artists are charting entire LPs: Dr. Buzzard, Gloria Gaynor, Trammps, MFSB, Lalo Schifrin, & Donna Summer. Artists with 3 separate titles charting: Gloria Gaynor (medley), Whispers, Double Exposure, Candi Staton Artists with 2 titles charting: Tavares, Lalo Schifrin, Giorgio, Moment Of Truth Next week, we have 46 titles--8 debuts, 3 returns and I don't know how many dropoffs--(didn't bring that next legal pad!!!) [update: there are 22 dropoffs next week!!!) Debuts include a couple classics by Love Unlimited Orchestra & Salsoul Orchestra. Also, the Glitter Band, Gentlemen &Their Lady, Brian & Brenda (Russell), Five Special, the Controllers, & Whirlwind place new titles on the chart. That Whirlwind track is one of the most wonderful records I've been introduced to in the past few years--just infectiously delightful in it's melody and rhythms and over-all production. Check it out if ya never heard it--very later Hues Corporation (think "I Caught Your Act") in it's overall sound. :D:D:D _____________________________________________ DISCO MIX by TOM MOULTON Column #92 / August 16, 1976 [NEW YORK] Calla Records, distributed by Pye/ATV, is releasing the new Persuaders LP, "It's All About Love." There are three strong disco cuts. "Count The Ways" is the strongest, followed by "Two Women" and "Sure Shot." The album was produced by Norman Harris. It has a strong Philadelphia sound, not unlike Double Exposure. Roulette will release two more disco disks this week. Both will be commercially available. "You've Got The Power" by Camoflague is a discoized version of the original tune by Su Kramer [says "Sue Cramer"]. The record has a good rhythm break which builds into another break consisting of vocals going in and out. It runs for 7:55 minutes. The other release is by Whirlwind. Titled "Full Time Thing (Between Dusk & Dawn"), the tune has a strong sound with a good rhythm section. The arrangement is definitely Philadelphia, but the sound is New York. Morningstar Records, distributed by Springboard International, has released "Please Love Me Again" by the VIP Connection. This record was popular in New York clubs about six months ago, but at the time was available only as an import. Now that it is available domestically in commercial quantities, it should do well in a lot of areas. The sound is a lot like the Ritchie Family, and the song is similar to the English classic, "Telstar." Omaha, Nebraska, now has a record pool. Those wishing further information should contact Mike Newman, Omaha Record Pool, 2556 Marcy Street, #26, Omaha, Neb. 68105. __________________________________________________ _____________ OK, now let's check to see where the recently charted items rank in the DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ...... The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of 1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979) DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 Rankings: (Based on items in this weeks chart): 24 charting positions featuring 30 titles #03) TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT #10) THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO #36) TEN PERCENT/MY LOVE IS FREE #92) YOU SHOULD BE DANCING #101) I DON'T WANNA LOSE YOUR LOVE #102) CHERCHEZ LA FEMME / SOUR & SWEET #115) HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL/ DON'T TAKE AWAY THE MUSIC #147) CAN WE COME TOGETHER/ DISCO PARTY #157) YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE MINE #160) COULD IT BE MAGIC/ COME WITH ME #166) NICE AND SLOW #175) YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE /RUN TO ME #179) YOU + ME = LOVE #196) IT'S BETTER THAN WALKING OUT #258.) | A few weeks ago, I posted an interview article from Billboard with former NYC DJ/ now RCA exec David Todd. He gave his reasons why the general public did not want to purchase commercial 12 inch records and stated that RCA had no plans to release any. Then I noted that in exactly a month, RCA would announce their first commercially available 12-inch. [Isn't It Ironic? Department: one month later, in the 8/28/76 Tom Moulton column, RCA announces the release of its first commercially available 12" single.] As is usual lately, NO ONE bothered to comment or offer a guess. So, I pose it once more. Humor me.
