| Marky: You deserve a medal or three for what you do with these threads, so no need to apologise. If that Disco Xplosion TRIPLE CD had a big name jock behind it, everyone would rave about it. Loads of great tracks and just how compilations ought to be. It's been a joy to listen to. |

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... Choice Quotes: [from Tom Moulton's 1/3/76 "Club Dialog":] "..... next week Andrea True's "MORE, MORE, MORE" is scheduled to ship. The latter disk has quite a different sound in that it has more of an import feel (from France or Germany, say) than what you'd expect. The sides were cut in Jamaica, and their strong sensuality should have strong appeal to spinners." [from Brian Chin's liner notes to MORE, MORE, MORE: THE BEST OF THE ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION:] " "MORE, MORE, MORE" is a classic from top to bottom, really: Classic pop-funk beat, classic lyrics, clasic attitude, classic top 10 hit--and a classic cast of characters. The "Connection," as embodied in these massive disco-era successes, was between Andrea True, absolutely a self-made woman, Greg Diamond, who launched a five-year hot streak in 1976 with the song, and Tom Moulton, an objective ear who improved everything he touched as the inventor of the disco remix......" "What emerged from the remix at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio turned out to be one of disco's signature moments. The influence of Silver Convention and the earlier, breathier Donna Summer is apparent in the overall production concept of the album. But the unmistakable New York funk is there, in its slow syncopation--"clave", as percussionist Diamond puts it--its nasty, rock-hard bottom, and the rhythmic tension that Diamond points out as the critical element of any successful track. Moulton was unaware of Andrea's [porno] film career and wondered a bit about the lyric while developing the sonics and structure of the record: "It wouldn't have come out so pretty if I had know what it was about," is his wry comment now." __________________________________________________ __ THE CLASSIC MORE, MORE, MORE moves to the top of the heap in its 4th week--by virtue of being the "HOTTEST" record charting. We're always ahead of the curve here, since no single chart has it at #1 yet, but they will soon. Actually next week LA is the first to chart it #1. MORE, MORE, MORE chart stats: A= #5; B= #4; C= #3; D= #6; E= #4; F= n/c MOVIN' makes its move up to #5 all the way from #25 last week. MOVIN' is gonna experience the same problems that befell MIGHTY HIGH here. Currently chart E (LA/SD) is charting CHANGIN' with another track from the Brass Construction LP, LOVE--instead of MOVIN'. Next week E adds MOVIN'--but chart C stops charting it--so it never gets to make its full impact on this chart. Record World lists it as #1 for 4 weeks. Eddie Kendricks charts 3 tracks from his current LP at #9, #17 & #42 this week. A fourth track will appear later. Each chart is listing them in different combinations...so they bounce around a lot. Chart A is solid with all 3. MIGHTY HIGH remains the #1 record on chart A, F and the Record World National Chart. Because the 3 NYC retailers have dropped it, it has missed the top 5 here for the last couple weeks...but next week it moves up to #3 and stays there for several more weeks. ODDITY: Jazz bassist Ron Carter debuts his discofied version of Cole Porter's ANYTHING GOES at #45 this week. It will disappear next week --but Joel Whitburn's book shows this record peaking at #8 on the Record World chart and actually started charting there on 10/18/75. What took NYC so long and why wasn't it ever mentioned earlier? :-? Next week, the debuts include 2 bonafide CLASSICS that have definitely stood the test of time: one by Vicki Sue Robinson and one by the Trammps. In addition, there will be new titles from Hank Crawford, Carl Graves, Atlanta Disco Band (adding a 3rd & 4th title from their current LP to the chart), Jon Wite Group, Jumbo '76, Miz Davis, Banbarra and the Divine Miss M debuts her first disco record!!! Altogether, we have 12 debuts, 8 returns and 18 dropoffs for a total of 55 items. 3 records make their first appearances in the Top 10 including B.C.G. (Bob Crewe Generation) which heretofore has only been charting in LA--the Land of LA-LA. Bob's record is soooooooo LA--"Hollywood Hot" which was iged by NYC--was a smash in the namesake city ("pickin' up chicken at Hollywood & Vine" anyone?) but didn't translate to much NYC charting. This time NYC feels the "Street Talk" and the LP, which also contains a track extolling the charms of a certain "Cherry Boy"!!!!, gets major chart action on both coasts. Oh, that Bob!!!! :P :oops __________________________________________________ ___ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton (note the new title!!!) Column #66; February 7, 1976 (I screwed up and typed this week's new Moulton column in last weeks column. "shootyourshot" informs me that there was no Moulton chart in the January 31, 1976 Billboard. It would appear that Billboard gave Moulton a week off and asked for "more, more, more" mentions of new titles--about 4 times the amount of info in his previous columns and even gave it a new title "DISCO MIX" replacing the old "CLUB DIALOG" moniker.) So before you complain that you're gettin' that deja vu feelin' all over again--go back and read last weeks column--no need to reprint it here, is there? __________________________________________________ ___ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You MORE SHACK UP I HEAR A SYMPHONY THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO TURN THE BEAT AROUND STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT NIGHT AND DAY TOUCH AND GO GET UP AND BOOGIE (That's Right!) & LOVE HANGOVER!!!! __________________________________________________ __ Today's chart was typed while listening to: MORE, MORE, MORE: THE BEST OF THE ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION (for obvious reasons) SALSOUL 30TH (2 cd set) (contains long versions of 3 of the Candido cuts discussed elsewhere this past week: "Jingo," "Thousand Finger Man" & "Dancin' & Prancin'") & Q, I agree with you that this is a terrific compilation: DISCO XPLOSION (3 cds) (import from the Netherlands) full of mostly obscure & some well-known-- but ALL funky titles, longish and shortish versions--but all worth hearing. And it's a bargain at around $16.00!!!! __________________________________________________ |

| Thanks again for the kind words, discotom73. It just bummed me out yesterday when I had everything completed and was adding the final period to the last sentence to have it all just disappear!!!! Talk about "someone left my cake out in the rain"!!! I was so depressed I had to quit. Hopefully, that won't happen again. I guess I'll have to post it in sections so I don't ever run that risk again. |

I had hepatitis. MORE, MORE, MORE gains strength in its 2nd week at #1 with a total of 71 points and 6 chart rankings (58 points & 5 chart rankings last week). MORE, MORE, MORE stats: A= #3; B= #2; C= #2; D= #4; E= #1; F= #13 3 records move into the Top 10: CHANGIN' moves up +9 to #4 (next week, it falls way down and then rebounds up to the Top 10 again!!) STREET TALK adds support from NYC charts A (#14) & B (#8.) and SF's chart F (#9) adding to LA chart E (#5), it moves up an additional +22 points to #8.(last week it also jumped up +22 points from #52 to #30) BOHANNON'S BEAT gets support from SF in addition to the usual LA--so Californina is diggin' Bohannon & NY is iggin' him bigtime!!! MOVIN' is charted everywhere--except chart C (Colony Records)--Colony is not feelin' MOVIN'--after 2 weeks of charting it at #14--Colony will never chart it again. Odd considering its 2 sister retailers (B & D) are ranking it #1!!! On the other hand, Colony is lovin' SPANISH HUSTLE. It ranks it at #1 for the 4th time after it slipped to #2 last week. This seems to be a NYC only record, well at this point in time, anyway. It does get some play elsewhere later.... Chart D, in addition to A (#1), E (#3) and F (#1) gives MIGHTY HIGH 3 points (#13), allowing it 10 more points than it had last week (36 up to 46)--moving it up to #3 after 11 weeks on the chart. Its gonna stay there for a couple more weeks. Multiple chartings: Atlanta Disco Band (4) Eddie Kendricks (3) Brass Construction, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Joe Thomas (2) Debuts: Who knew the Trammps CLASSIC THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO was first released in the U.K.??? Its charting on chart A (#7) as a U.K. import. "Disco's TOMBOY" Vicki Sue Robinson (I once heard her described that way--didn't "get it" til much later!!! is discovered by Colony @ #14. Bette Midler's disco debut ranks #14 on LA's chart E. Bette will get support from some other cities--but NONE from NYC. Banbarra's SHACK UPwill be an LA only record. LA likes the FUNK/ Give 'em the FUNK. This week pesky LPs are charting containing tracks that are already charting here complicating how I rank them. :o  :-? --especially when they have the same title as the single (BABY FACE/LADY BUMP). Eddie Drennon & Biddu Orchestra get bundled with the individual tracks...why? because I said so. Next week we have a total of 60 items!!! 10 debuts + 6 returns/ -11 dropoffs Our #1 has a total of 77 points out of a possible 90. 3 records move into the Top 10: one a repeater and 2 other new titles by the same artist--giving that artist 3 separate titles in the Top 10!!! That must be a new record??!! :-? Debuts include a 4th title by Eddie Kendricks; 2 from the Tymes (their first appearances here since "You Little Trustmaker" on the very first chart); Wing & a Prayer Fife & Drum Corps, MFSB, Ecstasy, Third World Band, Liz Torres & Natural Order. Nothing momentous--but wait til the following week 2/28/76 for another ALLTIME CLASSIC to arrive (from one of my alltime personal faves). __________________________________________________ ___ Time for an updated.... Debuting this week.... CARL GRAVES (@ #27) CARL GRAVES (A&M 3410) (rating: worthless!!) "Hopelessly lame arrangements of some fairly decent songs (notably "My Whole World Ended," and Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" aren't all that mar this first and only record by a singer who sounds like he's still audtioning." [DM = Dave Marsh] :o  :-? BETTE MIDLER ( @ #51) "When Bette Midler first began appearing in New York nightclubs, she was revelatory: a cabaret performer who was truly funny and had a firm grasp of rock and its offshoots. As a Seventies answer to Barbra Streisand, she was perfect. The flawed but historic first album ["THE DIVINE MISS M" ****] captures her in all her gum-snapping, wisecracking naivete'--everything from John Prine's "Hello In There" to the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is here. This is the album that created nostalgia as we currently know it. But Bette wilted in the spotlight, and little that she has come up with since is sufficient to explain her rabid cult following. The readings grow more camp and turgid with each new album, and Midler seems less committed as well. There are bright spots: the spontaneous, screamingly funny dialogue on the "LIVE AT LAST"*** album, which is also enhanced by her studio recording of "You're Moving Out Today." A few more songs like this and her hysterical, mismangaed career might finally amount to something." (DM= Dave Marsh) YIKES!!!! __________________________________________________ __ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #67 2/14/76 (NEW YORK) One of the hottest new records around is "Where The Happy People Go" by the Trammps. Atlantic is already giving out copies of the U.K. single (released there last week). The commercial copy will carry a long and short version of the song. The label is also coming with 12-inch disco disks within the next two weeks. The disco grapevine is already turned on to this record, from the several test pressings that got out a few weeks back. Midland International is releasing the new Touch Of Class single "Don't Want No Other Lover" this week. It's more of a disco record than its last disk "I'm In Heaven," which most DJs had to speed up. This effort seems right on the mark. The label's Harry Sparo also tips us that there will be a new Silver Convention single out in two weeks. The song, "Get Up and Boogie," is a cut on a forthcoming album and it has a much harder sound, with numerous breaks, that what was on their last release. The album will be available the second week of March. RCA is rush releasing "A Time For Celebration," a new single by the Choice Four and Faith, Hope & Charity. Yes, both groups are together on the disk. The offering is the latest in a flood of bicentennial tunes and it should prove out as one of the best. Expect a 12-inch disk of the record. RCA has also released "Never Gonna Let You Go," an LP by Vicki Sue Robinson. Besides the title cut (her first single), there are four strong dance tunes, with the best being "Turn The Beat Around," also the title of her latest single. Honors also go to "Common Thief," "We Can Do Almost Anything" and "Act Of Mercy." "Disco Hop" by the Third World Band shapes up as an interesting release. It has the hustle beat, with a big horn sound. The sound is very New York, even though it ships on Abraxas, a label based in Morton Grove, Illinois. Epic has just released the long-awaited Biddu Orchestra LP--"Biddu Orchestra"--containing all the songs that the clubs here have been playing off an English import. On the album are "Exodus," "Aranjuez Mon Amour," "Summer Of '42," both songs on their latest single and a version of "Blue Eyed Soul." Anthony White has his debut alum released by Philadelphia International. There are two strong cuts: "Stop and Think It Over" and "Only Child's Play." Both cuts are on the up side, and have the "Philly sound." WLYT-FM is now Disco 92, playing the best in disco 24 hours a day. The new format went into effect Jan. 2, and program director John Jay Mudocliffe says that the move was prompted by local listener requests for more disco and progressive Black music sounds. The station is now similar in style to Washington D.C.'s KYS. Tom Savarese, DJ at 12 West here, has had "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" by Johnny Hammond (Milestone) on his top 10 list for almost two weeks now. Reportedly, other Djs are beginning to pick up on it. The record is the closest thing to jazz that is happening in the discos now." __________________________________________________ ___ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You MORE NIGHT AND DAY TOUCH AND GO GET UP AND BOOGIE (That's Right!) | Marky! Somewhere,a Disco ball turns everytime you post your chart movements-thankyou again. Misc comments:some of these bring back great memories. And you are right on again when you mention that LA/West Coast play was exclusive(at least in your chart findings)songs like "my soul is satisfied" just flood me with distinctive memories-that bass break would be cranked up till my ears hummed, and the DJ would cut the lights out-sweet nirvana! "sing a happy song"was so HUGE here along with "shack up"(and has anyone EVER found this on LP as stated in Billboard? and I'm not talkin' about all the "breaks/beats" compilations which gave this great song it's due-it states it comes from a UA(United Artists) lp? and then there is Julie's terrific "one fine day" -such a great hustle record. And I always thought some savy PR person would dust off Ramsey Lewis' "spiderman" for one of the new movie sequals. With some of the above and adding "Bohannons beat", we Californians were much funkier than the east coast- please don't flame me! it's just an observation! | ***** :D :D :D Ahhh ..... Valentine's Day 1976 You and yours are out to the clubs ... where that night , at some point along the way , you're assured to hear "MORE MORE MORE" and "MIGHTY HIGH " ... some Bohannon .... and probably "I LOVE MUSIC " ( still soundin' good even after 17 weeks!) . That alone makes for a memorable night . But on this one you've also noticed some new tunes you hadn't heard before ....ones that grabbed you in that certain special way . Soon you'd be out hunting these babies down ...identifying that wildy frenetic percussioned numbered as "TURN THE BEAT AROUND " by Vickie Sue Robinson , " that saucy hard-edged funk tune as "SHACK UP " by Banbarra ... those two on their own being ample in their rewards . BUT ... then there was that other very special tune you'd heard that night , that one with that hypnotic churning movement .... your very first ever encounter of ...... the greatest disco record of them all ..........."THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO " by The Trammps :D :D :D . Damn! What a great night .... what great times Valentines at the time ? Well, there was "Annette" back home , "Ginger " from the 4th floor of the dorms, ..... and from the streets (POLK ) ..."Dario" my sexy Italian Opera apprentice .... well ...I told you they were grrreat times ! :P ***** typed while listening to Johnny Hammond's " LOS CONQUISTADORS CHOCOLATES " |

| Thanks to thommy, remicks and belatedly Vinylstash--Is that you DJ JOHN??? thommy, so "Shack Up" wasn't on an LP--just a 45??? In The Long Run: Longest Chart Run: I LOVE MUSIC (18 weeks) "THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA" LP (16 weeks) LADY BUMP (15 weeks) THE FINAL TALLY: 60 items this week; last week 55 +8 debuts +8 returns/ -14 dropoffs 1 record on all 6 charts (Andrea True Connection @ #1) 1 record on 5 charts (B.C.G. @ #2) 2 records on 4 charts 6 records on 3 charts 12 records on 2 charts 38 records on only 1 chart __________________________________________________ _ What's It All About, Mar-keeey??? (Is it just for old disco we live???..... MORE, MORE, MORE gains even more, more, more momentum in its 3rd week at #1, garnering 77 points (71 last week) from all 6 charts; once again--the only record on all 6 charts. MORE, MORE, MORE stats: A= #1; B= #5; C= #1; D= #5; E= #1; F= #6 (So MIGHTY HIGH's 7 week reign at #1 on chart A is over!!!) The Andrea True Connection's closest competitor @ #2 is B.C.G's STREET TALK almost doubling its point total from last week (28 to 52) and charting everywhere except chart D. (D will eventually get on board but only after B drops it.) B currently ranks STREET TALK #1 and SF (F) has it at #4. Brass Construction's MOVIN' remains #1 on chart D--but its companion LP track CHANGIN' was strangely omitted from the D & B (E left off MOVIN' chart listings this week!!! This causes CHANGIN' to tumble from #4 last week (44 pts.) down to #35 (only 7 pts!!). Someone in the chart compiling department must have forgotten to bundle the two titles together this week!!! :o Next week, B&D get it right and it bounces back to #10!!! Eddie Kendricks charts 4 titles this week with 3 of those in the Top 10!!! (#7-9-10-25) This must be a first for us!!! I didn't check it--but rather rare, I think. WOW rebounds up the chart to #11 as it gets a domestic release (it was an import at first) expanding to all 4 NYC charts. The soon-to-be Top 10 item and ALLTIME CLASSIC.... THAT"S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO is still an U.K. import and is charted at #2 on chart A only. That's a remarkable achievement for a second week of charting on conservative chart A. Next week it gets added support from guest city chart F (Boston). A CLASSIC IS A CLASSIC IS A CLASSIC!!!! The other CLASSIC movin' up the chart TURN THE BEAT AROUND moves unto chart A @ #12 and retains its power on chart C moving up to #5. Next week it's across the board in NYC--only LA won't have discovered it. Next week another ALLTIME CLASSIC makes its first appearance and will already be #1 on chart D in its first week. Remember, D loves anything from Motown (hint, hint) The Monster Orchesta (was John Davis & in the billing as this time?) & the Richard Hewson Orchestra enter the chart, along with additional titles from Hank Crawford, Wing & A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps & Fatback Band. Also, Brown Sugar, The Originals, The Pearls, Leone Thomas, David Bowie and Carol Williams will debut new titles. 3 new titles crack the Top 10 and one more returns from the depths of this weeks chart. Our #1 has 80 out of a possible 90 points. This is the best score since the Salsoul Orchesta grabbed #1 with 80 points on 12/13/75--albeit with 7 charts instead of the 6 next week. Our number one next week will tie with I LOVE MUSIC, which since 11/15/75 holds the current record for achieving 80 points with only 6 charts. That record was bested on 11/29/75 by Salsoul Orchestra again, which now has the best chart score for achieving 82 points with only 6 charts (90 possible points). Does this make any sense???? I'm rambling--enuf.  __________________________________________________ ___ DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton Column #68; 2/21/76 [NEW YORK] WMOT has signed Damon Harris & Impact and product rights go to Atlantic. The label will be releasing an album in April and, most likely, a single next month. Harris, at one time with the Temptations as a replacement for Eddie Kendricks, seems to have really come into his own with this new group. They already have completed several cuts, and two of them, "GIVE A BROKEN HEART A BREAK" and "HAPPY MAN" are destined for strong disco followings. Early credit for his production work goes to Bobby 'Electronic" Eli, who also teamed with Len Barry [remember "1-2-3" kidz???] to write most of the songs that Harris is recording. Dubs of Carol Williams' disco version of the standard "MORE" have been given out by Salsoul Records. The record, a Vince Montana production, features a long and short version, not to mention backup for Williams by the Salsoul Orchestra. Ronnie Baker is the bassist here, and at the record's end he plays in harmony with himself (the bass line he created in "BAD LUCK"), leaving a listener virtually hanging from the walls. It proves to be a great way to end a disk. American Ariloa has just released "SEXY LADY" by Jumbo '76. A German import, the record has already begun to happen in San Francisco, and with good reason. It's primarily an instrumental, but does have some sensual background vocal tracks. Overall, it has a European disco sound. Event Records is putting out its first 12-inch disco disk, and the honors go to the Fatback Band's version of "SPANISH HUSTLE." The song has been remixed (featuring an extra timbali break for one) and will not be commercially available at first. If initial disco response is strong though, it will be added to the flip side of commercial releases. The "LADY BUMP" LP will be available in three weeks and it will contain the as yet unreleased disco version of the title cut. Atlantic will be stickering the LP to alert consumers to the special disco mix, which was handled by Anita Wexler. Columbia Records is also entering the 12-inch disco disk field, with two cuts from Maynard Ferguson'sforthcoming "PRIMAL SCREAM" LP. The 12-inchers will feature the title cut, which is funky r&b sounding, and "PAGLIACCI," which is very pop sounding. At times, the latter's horn solos remind one of Van McCoy's "LOVE IS THE ANSWER." Producer Bob James has the veteran jazzman in more of a commercial bag than ever on several of the cuts. __________________________________________________ __ Coming Soon To a Disco Near You MORE NIGHT AND DAY TOUCH AND GO GET UP AND BOOGIE (That's Right!)
