| Hey remicks, I know you and some others really get a charge out of the charts. I've calculated the points of the songs charting til the end of 1976. The list fluctuates in the 80-100+ titles (by not bundling)....so it's gonna be a whole lot more work now--but more consistent with less dropoffs on a weekly basis....so I'm working behind the scenes. When I get some actual charts done--I'll start typing. Next up, I'm gonna do the Top 40 biggest sellers from each of the 3 NYC retailers, since we now bid them adieu...using the end of 1975 list, I've added the titles from 1976 that qualify in a Top 40 ranking....that should be ready pretty soon...the rest will follow as time allows. Don't ya wanna kick yourself for missing this Troc party??? :-o;)

| LET"S HEAR IT FOR THE RETAIL STORES!!!!:grin::grin: The 3 New York retailers leave the Billboard chart tabulations as of 8/28/76. They have had a major effect on the "Compilation Consensus" charts compiled here thus far. Frustratingly, dropping records when they are at their peak in the clubs-- but interestingly, providing most of the obscure titles people have forgotten about..... __________________________________________________ ___________ [from their website:] Downstairs Records 5 Marlin Drive Copiague, New York 11726-5308 1 (631) 842-6571 E-mail: downstairsrecords@juno.com ![]() About Downstairs Records Downstairs Records opened in February of 1970. It was originally located in the subway arcade on the corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. (Which is where the name comes from.) You had to walk down a flight of stairs to enter the store. It was in the same location as a famous store called "Times Square Records." We opened the store one year after their closing. It is a family owned store in business now for over 29 years. We have gotten many awards over the years, like best dance music store of the decade and we have received many gold records for helping to promote new artists like Chic, Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band, Billy Joel, Elvis Presley [new artist in the Seventies???!!!], Marvin Gaye, Lionel Ritchie [Richie], and the Temptations. We supply many broadway plays with music. We helped on the movie soundtrack for "Bronx Tale". Many personalities come into the store looking for that hard to get song, or that perfect song to go with a special scene. Our customer base includes Bruce Willis, Matt Dillon, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Chris Rock, Rachel [Raquel!] __________________________________________________ ____________ CHART B = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (DOWNSTAIRS RECORDS- NYC) from 10/26/74 - 8/28/76 At the time I compiled the 1975 stats, I wrote: "The trendiest of all the retail charts. Usually finds the hot records first--then drops 'em real fast. The top record here has only 129 points and only 3 others have more than 100 points. [update: by the end of August, 1976, one record has surpassed that total and now 6 others have topped the 100 point total...very few compared to the other 2 retailers.];-) "I'd liken Chart B & C (Colony Records) to the heat-seeking & fickle Hilton Sisters. Paris is chart B; Nicky is chart C. They are at every HOT party....Paris is like a butterfly in heat to find the Hot New Thing.... Retailer Relies on Specialization - Downstairs Records is a nine year old retail shop with two locations in subway stations in midtown Manhattan which specializes in disco and oldies. And business is booming, reports owner Nick deKrechewo, because the store has chosen to specialize in these two areas while competition between major dealers here escalates to staggering heights and the smaller operations struggle for survival, victims of intense price wars. Downstairs Records locations are 33rd St.. & 7th Ave. beneath the Statler Hilton hotel and at 1026 Sixth Ave. The store relies heavily on mail order sales to discos and DJ's across the country as well as to retail customers looking for hard to find items. According to Mr. deKrechewo when the store was opened with the capital outlay of about $10,000 in 1970 there was the realization that the tight budget and less than prime location negated any attempts to compete with the giants on their on turf. Today, as the 27 year old executive explains, who find Downstairs Records are the ones who really need it services. Without a doubt this is a sizable clientele, for the shop not only double its original space it also opened its second store run by Boris deKrechewo. The original facility is also up to an inventory of 300,000 in records, all fully paid for. Downstairs Records was the first retail outlet in the city to recognize the potential of disco music, and to provide a special section for its display. Today disco accounts for 50% of all record sales at the store. More recently the company began specializing in disco imports which are big in the clubs but largely unavailable at the retail level. At present hard to find imports account for 20% of all Downstairs Records sales. Acutely aware of the competition that would encroach on his territory. Mr. deKrechewo cannot risk relaxing his vigilance on market trends, or ignoring the needs of his customers. To ensure that his store is several jumps ahead of anything that is new, or any trends that may be developing, he has retained a staff of experts in the field of music he covers. They include David Rodriquez, a disco DJ whom he describes as his right hand assistant. Lisa Hazel an expert in disco music who also handles much of the mail order business. Barry Terry and Warren Tesoro, formerly of the Gary Toms Empire (!), who are oldies experts. The store also stocks what Mr. deKrechewo describes as the largest selection of oldies and country singles in the city. Downstairs Records carries an inventory of 170,000 titles representing about 1,000,000 records. The vast majority of these are 7" vinyl singles. Mr. deKrechewo is confident that 12" disco records will never replace conventional 7" singles. He states that although the 12 inchers enjoy popularity because of their length and fidelity, they are causing confusion by the lack of standardization. Mr. deKrechewo states that customers grumble because they cannot stack the 12 inchers because of their varying speeds. He also lambasts the 12 inchers as being too expensive, difficult to store, and representing vinyl waste in an era when emphasis is on conservation. He also states that unlike 18 months ago when they were first introduced, the quality of the 12 inch disk has dropped and (a lot of garbage) is being released in this format. As part of the strategy to maintain longevity through service, Downstairs Records functions as a consulting and programming service for DJs who are either too busy or too inexperienced to stay on top of all that is new in disco. The store advises, suggests, and complies entire programs for disco DJs at no additional costs to them. They also offer special discounts and 100% returnable warranty on all products. In spite of this offer the return rate has remained at around 3% with only a handful of buyers abusing it. The store has also released its first disco single on it 's newly established Downstairs Records label on an experimental basis. The first release is a British import, "For the Love of Money", by the Disco Dub band. The record is on yellow vinyl because, Mr. deKrechewo explains, multicolored vinyl appears to provide a substantial incentive for impulse buyers. __________________________________________________ ____________ Next: Chart C--Colony Records.

| ***** That's an impressive list of records . Wouldn't it be great if there were a venue that had an ongoing practice of playing special disco nites ...and wouldn't this list make for a great evening ..... a night of just the best of "real NYC disco " Quote:

Yes Genya Ravan is doing a version of that same Detriot Emeralds song. It has a Gloria Gaynor NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE churn to it along with TURN THE BEAT AROUND bongos .....but the overall flavour is sort of Sly & The Family Stone ..... with Genya belting it out a la Tina Turner/Janis Joplin .... on my copy her blaring voice is often distorted .... gospel like background vocals .... Her adlibs in the song consist of a series of NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NAs ... Love the bassline ... & the song itself. This version neither wows me nor surpasses the Detroit Emeralds version ..... but it's not gawdawful either ..... Horns provided by Kool & The Gang ..... ******

The store was unbelievable. Wall-to-wall, floor to ceiling vinyl. If Colony didn't have it, they'd GET IT!. The great thing for dj's was on weekends it would stay open until midnight or 1 AM in the morning. I remember doing some VERY last minute shopping, just before my set at The Anvil or even during sets for a friend. If my friend, Larry, had already started playing he would simply give me the money and say, "Run up to Colony --- I need this TONIGHT!! They were heavily into club music and competed quite well with the "Downstairs Records" and other stores at the time. I believe Graham visited there last year or early this year. He was disappointed also. Nothing like it used to be." __________________________________________________ ____________________________________________ [It's still there---but is now specialized in sheet music, Karaoke & Broadway cast music!!!] Colony Music Center: For all your Karaoke...Sheet Music...and Broadway needs!! 1619 Broadway New York, NY 10019 212-265-2050 fax 212-956-6009 __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ________ CHART C = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (COLONY RECORDS-NYC) Colony is trendy but MUCH more loyal to the records it likes. In the 1975 year-end roundup, I wrote, ..."If chart B & C are, respectively, Paris & Nicky Hilton..then chart D could be compared to Paris' ex- best girlfriend and partner in crime...Miss Nicole Richie!!!! It's more one-toe-in-da-GHETTO Urban, more radio-oriented, and has a special affinity for anything Motown. ;-) URBAN = more funky-oriented records than the charts above-- Rufus, Disco Tex, Labelle, Jimmy Castor Bunch, Bobby Womack, Strutt, Brass Construction. RADIO-ORIENTED= only chart to list the Three Degrees' smash "When Will I See You Again" and "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, among others. Johnnie Taylor's "Disco Lady" would be a 1976 example...only charted here briefly, although it was a Pop & R&B #1. LOVES DA MOTOWN= An LP by The Supremes will chart for weeks on end here and nowhere else; ditto Eddie Kendricks titles abound; Temptations, David Ruffin, Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Commodores, Miss Ross @ #3!!!, etc. At first, it was the most erratic--dropping things and adding them back and dropping 'em and adding 'em in--maybe this was because different locations were compiling the info? But by the end of of 1974, it (Nicole) was more in the groove with the Hilton Sisters of B & C. Quirks did arise: #1 listing for Earth, Wind & Fire LP cuts: AFRICANO & HAPPY FEELING...no mention of SHINING STAR from the same LP; #1 listing for HAPPY by Eddie Kendricks. But, when it's all added up...it's actually the most consistent with the final Top 100 of the Disco Compilation Consensus chart of '74-'75--charting all 50 of the top 50 and 96 of the final top 100. At the end of 1975, Melody charted 14 records with over 100 points; 259 titles out of 461 charted here....1976 stats listed after the Top 40.... __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _______ MELODY SONG SHOPS TOP 40 BEST-SELLERS (11/16/74-8/28/76) * 1976 additions 1) *"WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO" (LP - all cuts) featuring "THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO" - The Trammps (Atlantic LP + single) (140 points (LP) + 96 points (single) = 236 total points)/ 11 weeks (LP) + 7 weeks (single) = 18 weeks on the chart) Peaks: 1 week @ #1 (single)/ 5 weeks @ #1 (LP) = 6 weeks @#1 2) FREE MAN - South Shore Commission (Wand) 153 points/ 15 weeks) Peak: 3 weeks @ #1 3) * LOVE HANGOVER - Diana Ross (Motown) (149 points/ 11 weeks) Peak: 3 weeks @ #1 4) BAD LUCK - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (Phila. | hey marky, i haven't thanked you in a long time for all your work on these charts. the earliest charts and moulton columns turned me on to (or reminded me of) many 7"-only obscurities and album cuts. it was also gratifying to confirm that most of the records already in my collection that predated my own clubgoing had indeed packed dancefloors and sold in the shops catering to the disco crowd. your dedication to excavating and compiling these charts has helped make RadioioDisco what it is. thanks again! barry walters of http://www.radioio.com/radioiodisco.php |

| Why thanks Barry!!! :-D I'm such a fan of what you're doing with your radio station--I see so many of those early obscure disco titles in your playlists and am so grateful there is a place where they can, at long last, be heard. Much success to you on your radio venture!!! 8-)8-)8-) There's no place else where you can hear these lost gems mixed in with the more popular disco stuff. It's always a treat to tune in. :-D:-D:-D

| OK, here's the companion DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS CHART to the Billboard Disco Action Top 30 chart I typed a couple weeks ago...Here I have compiled, in descending point order, every title listed on all 8 charts Billboad printed for the week of 9/04/76. I've eliminated the "bundling" of all titles from a source record, unless the titles have the exact same number of points--in case of point ties...records on more charts get precedence. When they have the same points and the same number of charts, it's in alphabetical order, baby. __________________________________________________ ______________ September 4, 1976 Billboard Pop Chart Top 10: 1) YOU SHOULD BE DANCING - Bee Gees (RSO) (1st week @ #1) 2) YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER LOVE LIKE MINE - Lou Rawls (PIR) 3) LET 'EM IN - Wings (Capitol) 4) I'D REALLY LOVE TO SEE YOU TONIGHT - England Dan & John Ford Coley (Big Tree) 5) (Shake, Shake, Shake) SHAKE YOUR BOOTY - KC & The Sunshine Band (T.K.) 6) PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC - Wild Cherry (Sweet City/Epic) 7) A FIFTH OF BEETHOVEN - Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band (Private Stock) 8.
