No, not Carol; Carol recorded for Midland International, which was distributed by RCA--but the artist I'm looking for was on the actual RCA label. Had the biggest disco hit they'd ever charted thus far. This ain't a HARD one kids!!!! :-o:-o:-o :???::???::???: :oops::oops::oops: :-P:-P:-P ;)

the one STARSKY is using, boat race =face;-)

Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: YOU SHOULD BE DANCING (week #2); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one.

New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= YOU SHOULD BE DANCING) (5th week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= "DR. BUZZARD'S ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND" LP) (5th week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= "DR. BUZZARD'S ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BAND" LP) (2nd week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= RUBBERBAND MAN) (2nd week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= YOU SHOULD BE DANCING) (6th week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Washington, D.C. Discos:
(#1 = CHERCHEZ LA FEMME / SOUR & SWEET) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... well IS it????)

BEE GEES NEW POINT CHAMPS!!!
...Break Point Total Record with 86 out of 90 Points!!! :D:D:D

After tieing the Trammps' existing record of 85 out of 90 points, two weeks ago--this week the Bee Gees better the existing record by one point--up to 86-- and retain #1 for the 5th straight week. :D

Bee Gees stats: (2 #1's + 4 #2's)
A= #1; B= #2; C= #2; D= #2; E= #1; F= #2

The runners-up:

Dr. Buzzard stats: (#2 for the 3rd week; this week with 82 points)
A= #2 (tracks); B= #1 (LP); C= #1 (LP); D= #5 (LP); E= #4 (tracks); F= #1 (tracks)

Gloria Gaynor stats: (#3 with 66 points)
A= #3 (medley); B= #6 (LP); C= #4 (LP); D= #4 (LP); E= #7 (medley); F= #6 (medley)

Ritchie Family stats: (#4 with 47 points)
A= #9; B= N/C; C= #7; D= #11; E= #3; F= #3

The Whispers (40 points/ all 6 charts) retain #5.
Undisputed Truth (36 points) climbs up to #6 with 4 charts reporting it.
Ja Kki (33 points) return to the Top 10 @ #7 with 5 charts reporting it.
The Fatback Band (33 points) break into the Top 10 with their LP track @ #8.
Double Exposure (29 points) drops from #7 down to #9 with "My Love Is Free"; the other new LP track "Everyman" , previously bundled with it, only charts on A this week...falling down to #25.
The Trammps round out the Top 10--with 24 points...this will be their swan song in the Top 10 after 6 months there!!!! [first charted Top 10 on 2/28/76!!!]

Bubbling under the Top 10 are 2 hit tracks from Tavares (they'll be coming back up when the National chart takes over); 2 tracks from Giorgio and 3 from Candi Staton. The Emotions, Lou Rawls, Stratavarious, Earth, Wind & Fire & Faith, Hope & Charity all move up.

The Glitter Band, Gentlemen & Their Lady, Whirlwind, and 2 orchestras, Salsoul & Love Unlimited debut new stuff...all will be around for a long time...several will drop off next week, but will come back.

Also, debuting is a new track by inter-racial (white) husband /(black)wife team Brian & Brenda [Russell] debuting on Elton John's Rocket label. Brian & Brenda will later divorce--Brian will marry former "Charlie's Angel" Cheryl Ladd and Brenda will become a solo artist with hits like "So Good, So Right" & "Piano In The Dark." She will also write hits like "Get Here" (Oleta Adams) and "Dinner With Gershwin" (Donna Summer).

Next week, 8/28/76 is the pivotal turning point in Billboard chart history. The usual 6 chart format (3 NYC retailers/ 3 Disco city reports) will be printed...however the first national DISCO ACTION TOP 30 chart will also be printed right next to it. This will be the last week the 3 retailers ever appear; from then on it will be based on 15 U.S. cities and 1 Canadian city disco audience response charts compiled into a Top 40 (expands from 30 to 40 in about 2 weeks/ transitional week 9/4/76 has only 8 of the city charts; by 9/11 (YIKES!!!) the full 16 charts are printed.

So--next week-- you can compare and contrast the results of the two different formats; there are differences!!! We've always been 2/3 New York City-centric thus far ( since 4 out of 6 charts are NYC based)...this will now change and the rest of the country will have their say...MORE RADIO HITS will now chart!!!! Records that NYC wouldn't touch with a 20 foot cokespoon like "Play That Funky Music" will start charting... The KC & The Sunshine Band records will actually be termed disco hits rather than "radio records" thanks to the middle regions of the USA!!! ;-)

Next week, 8 records debut, 4 return & 13 dropoff.
The Top 10 admits 5 titles (3 are newcomers to the Top 10 and 2 are return items.)
Debuts include stuff by Jimmy Sabater, Maryann Farra & Satin Soul, Alice Street Gang, Camoflague, California, & The Ebonys. Also a nice debut track from Deniece Williams arrives (not the one you'd expect!) and a future biggie from Carol ("Doctor's Orders") Douglas. Carol has been lookin' for another big hit for awhile now--and she's finally got one on its way.

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #93 / August 21, 1976

(Thanks to shootyourshot for providing me with a copy of this column.)

[NEW YORK] Marlin Records is rush-releasing "The Sound Of The Drum," the debut LP by New York percussionist, Ralph MacDonald. The sound is an interesting combination of subtle jazz with a strong pop/soul feel. There are four good cuts including "Where Is The Love" (written by MacDonald, and originally recorded by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway.) This version features Patti Austin on vocals, and a nice harmonica on some of the lead parts. The rhythm is tight and not overbearing.

"Calypso Breakdown" is the longest cut. It runs for 7:50 minutes and is in a salsa style with strong overtones of jazz. "Jam On The Groove" is more in a jazz vein than the others and features a horn sound, along with a good synthesizer break played by Bob James. There is also a strong percussion break which builds back into the full orchestration. "The Only Time You Say You Love Me (Is When We're Making Love)" is the most melodic cut and has the full orchestration, including strings. Richard Tee does most of the keyboards and Eric Gale is on guitar. Overall, it is a very strong LP.

Love Unlimited Orchestra has released a new single on 20th Century Records, from the forthcoming LP "My Sweet Summer Suite." This is also the title of the single. Barry White is beginning to change his sound. The drum pattern is different and the sound is beginning to take on some Latin qualities. There is a good rhythm break with celli swarming in and out. This could be the new sound to put White back in the discos.

Rocket Records has released its first 12-inch disco disk "Gonna Do My Best To Love You" by Brian & Brenda [Russell]. It is very much in the Ashford & Simpson vein. The introduction and the break have a beautiful combination of voices and synthesizer. The record then goes into a soulful, happy, bouncy sound. Tom Savarese [misspelled as 'Severese" once again], deejay at the Sandpiper on Fire Island, has been getting a very strong reaction to it.

OK, now let's check to see where the recently charted items rank in the DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ......

[first posted in the 3/26/76 column]

The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by someone named Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of 1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979)

Default Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

OK, on my screen--there are 2 distinct types of font or size of type in this last column....does anyone see it besides remicks??? :o:o:o The actual top 46 chart and the 'What's It All About?" are the normal verdana font...but starting with the chart of least consenus chart from LA down to The Final Tally...then resuming with the Tom Moulton column to the end...the type is much smaller & compressed...and harder to read...

I do not understand what is happening here cause it's all being typed here and saved in Word--why the differences in the sections? Or are you not seeing it? Is there a way to change this after the fact? Could someone else who knows more about this stuff change it so it all matches? Or can only I do that? oh, I'm just askin...I do not understand what's goin' on after all this time of doing this!!!

[Note: I re-typed the passages that looked weird before...so hopefully, they don't anymore...if they ever did to anyone else...CUZ THEY DID TO ME!!!!!!] :roll::-?:o:evil:
