I
'm thinking it must be Dusty Springfield ?

And I wanted to point out Marky that the flip side of :

Billboard Pop Chart Top 10:

10) FOOL TO CRY – Rolling Stones

is HOT STUFF (USA)

Thanks for the recent chart! Looking forward to this next one ....

Good guesses, kidz...but WRONG!!!!!! Sandie Shaw comes closest to this Brit songbird who almost had a hit in the USA--til CHER beat her to it....hint, hint.......

P.S. dd, what a lovely photo!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.P.S. it's CILLA BLACK!!!!! (she originally cut "Alfie" for the movie & had a big hit in the UK--but Paramount had Cher re-record it for the American release....didn't really become a hit til later...but Cilla was screwed....)

Disco Action
Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: DISCO PARTY (week #2); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one.

New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.

Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP ( All Cuts)) (6th week) ( single “That’s Where the Happy People Go” charted #1 for 7 consecutive weeks prior to the LP release; so 13 weeks in total)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= TROUBLE-MAKER/ LOVE POWER) (1st week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (6th week) ( single “That’s Where the Happy People Go” charted #1 for 7 consecutive weeks prior to the LP release; so 13 weeks in total)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= TROUBLE-MAKER) (1st week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= TEN PERCENT) (2nd week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Houston, Texas Discos:
(#1 = SAN FRANCISCO HUSTLE / NO, NO, JOE) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

"THE DIRTY LOWDOWN" On This Week's Releases…. by In-the-Groove…

Kevin (in-the-groove), former dj and now disco record archivist, supplied that exhaustive list of 12” promos that I copied for the end of the 1975 charts. He’s supplied me with info from time to time and I’ve asked him to comment on the new week’s releases as time allows…. Read this and you’ll know why.

(note: haven't received this info yet...will add later...)

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???.....;-) well IS it????)

Same as it ever was....same as it ever was...same as it ever was....

"Where The Happy People Go"
is still #1 (with 75 points) for the 7th straight week.....

A= #1; B= #4; C= #1; D= #5; E= #7; F= #3

holding it's closest competitor "Ten Percent" @ #2 (66 points) for the third week in a row.

A= #2; B= #3; C= #2; D= #10; E= #1; F= #12

At #3..."Nice & Slow" is charting everywhere except D (it charted there only once on 5/15/76)

at #4..."Cathedrals" charts everywhere except F (Houston)..won't chart there til August!!!

#5..."Trouble-Maker jumps up to #5 from its debut @ #13 --next week it charts on all 6 charts....

#6 ...The Supremes chart everywhere except F

#7....Donna Summer is still charting on all disco charts/ no retail chartings after 13 weeks.... ditto Miss Ross at #9, crawling back into the Top 10 with 25 points (last week 31 points only got her a #11)

#8....Jimmy James moves up to #8 (4th week in the Top 10)...

and rounding out the Top 10...last week's golden boy "Love Chant" drops from 5 chartings (47 points) to only 2 chartings (21 points) in its 3rd week!!! Phew!!! That was quick!!!

Tavares drops out of the Top 10--gaining chart B, but losing support from this week's chart F; it moves back up next week...

Roberta Kelly debuts a second title @ #11; Boz Scaggs moves "Lowdown" up to #20; Barrabas debuts a new one @ #35 with Top 10 potential; former Temptations member, Damon Harris with his new group, Impact, debuts 2 titles @ #41 (only one title will get into the Top 10)

Down near the bottom...poor "Be My Baby"--a real chart oddity--charts for the 4th week with only 1 measly point again; expect 2 more weeks with 1 point and a peak on 6/26/76 with a whopping 2 points!!! Somebody @ Colony must have a fondness for this remake of the Ronettes tune...it gets the #15 slot on chart C once again this week....

Next week, we have a total of 46 items; 7 titles debut, 2 return and 14 dropoff. The Top 10 allows 1 new item into the upper sphere and readmits one title--so 2 titles drop out landing at #11 & #12 (Don't look at Miss Ross... she's hangin' on to her #9, dammit.);-)

A second title charts from both Tavares (love this one) and David Ruffin, along with 2 titles from a new Peoples Choice LP. Also, Bill Pursell, Don Covay and a great one from Side Effect make their first appearances here...

Stay tuned......

Column #85: 6/12/76

(NEW YORK) - CTI has been giving out advance test pressings of a cut off the new Lalo Schifrin "Black Widow" LP. The song is "Theme From Jaws" and for those DJs who have it the response has been excellent. The sound is something different and it could be called military marching disco music. The test pressings are 12-inch disco disk; the length is 8:15. The LP will be available later this month.

Curtis Mayfield's new "Give, Get, Take and Have" LP has a strong disco cut in "Party Night." It's the most commercial sounding disco song he has had in a long time.

The new Muscle Shoals Horns LP on Bang has a strong cut called "Breakdown." It is an instrumental version of one of the top disco hits of all times, "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys."

Oasis has picked up the rights for Atlantic's (Germany) recording artist Roberta Kelly. The single "Love Power" which was released last fall in Germany and started getting play here in April (primarily due to Bobby "DJ" Guttadaro) is included in her "Trouble-Maker" LP.

Disco Texas (Texas Record Pool) is getting strong response to Cilla Black's "Fantasy" (Private Stock). The record will be released in the New York area soon. [this one floors me--Houston gets records before NYC???!!]:o:o:o

The Maryann Farra & Satin Soul LP will be available next week on Brunswick. The LP contains "Never Gonna Leave You" and "Do Those Little Things," plus a remake of their hit "Forget That Girl", which they recorded as De-Lite-ful. "Just A Little Timing" is the strongest cut. They have recorded two Chi-Lites' hits in "You Got To Be The One" and "Stoned Out Of My Mind."

"Because Of You" by AC Soulful Symphony (Right On!, dist. by Buddah) is being rush released. Quality of Canada sent the New York Record Pool the Canadian 12-inch disco-disk which is 6:06 in length and Buddah is also making up the 12-inch disk to service discos. The sound is very much like the DCA sound with some classical overtones in the strings.

anyone know the backstory on the Cilla Black tune? It's too soon for a cover of the EW&F 'Fantasy", isn't it? EW&F are soon to release "Getaway" at this point in time....

Cilla did have a Top 40 hit in the USA in the mid-Sixties...the bombastic "You're My World", which Dionne Warwick covered on her "Valley of the Dolls" LP and didn't Helen Reddy remake this in the Seventies???

Very-Italian dramatic schmaltz ballad in the style of Dusty's "You Don"t Have To Say You Love Me"...."You're my world...you're every move I make...you're my world...you're everybreath I take...If our love ceases to be...then it's the END OF THe WORLD for me.(!!!!!!) --take a chill pill, Cill :-P .......(DIVA DRAMA akin to Miss Vikki Carr's psychotic "It Must Be Him"):-P

Just pulled out this one, this is a killer old school funk album!, and this “Breakdown” cut is heavy 8-) , I had forgotten all about this instrumental, just did a quick Gemm check up and almost all this LP cuts were released as singles.. but no CD according to AMG. “Born to get down” and “Hustle to the music” are other two outstanding cuts off this LP.

Atlantic is coming with a 12-inch disco disk on Passport’s “Ju-Ju-Man”. The club copy will be 10:04 in length.Tom Savarese, DJ at 12 West club here, has been on the song for several weeks now, while other dance spots are starting to pick it up.

The sound is very much like Maxayn’s disco hit during the summer of 1974 with ”Moon-funk” The song features a very funky rhythm with a moog and synthesizer in an electronic soul feel.
Don’t remember that Passport’s cut, I only have a different LP by them, but I’m more interested in this Moon-Funk number, it was released on Capricorn Records, any other online info, Label scan ? Cd ? audio samples?

>>> I guess I shouldn't be surprised that its time here was so limited ...but before it fades away completely .. . I did want to mention that

CHIC-CHICA-CHIC-CHICA-CHIC - Biddu Orchestra

is a fun one for those who think there's room for such things in their disco.
I guess you could file it under "camp" although that's not a preferred term for me ..... I'll stick to calling it " fun " .... I could see a half drunken conga line ( aren't they all ?? ) winding around and happily kicking away to it ......... ;) ..... :p:roll:

DROPPED OFF:

ROCK ME WITH YOUR LOVE/ CHIC-CHICA-CHIC-CHICA-CHIC - Biddu Orchestra (was #34/ 3 weeks on the chart)

Since I'LL BE GOOD TO YOUThe Brothers Johnson isn't in bold ....it means it hasn't charted here yet .... but does this also mean this song will not make even a dent on upcoming charts ?? Boy, that's quite a disco snub of the Bros. J first release .... no reported play at all of this uptempo #1 R&B tune .... This suggests to me that about now disco is better defining itself .... despite being a hugely popular song in other venues .... this soulful , lightfully funky tune didn't quite have the right ingredients for the club djs ...... .

I think I will be able to post the June 19, 1976 chart sometime this weekend ( hopefully Saturday--but maybe not til Sunday). I've got the actual chart & the Moulton column typed--just need to do that pesky stuff (dropoffs, etc.) that comes inbetween those 2 things...;)

Disco Action
Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: DISCO PARTY (week #3); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP ( All Cuts)) (7th week) ( single “That’s Where the Happy People Go” charted #1 for 7 consecutive weeks prior to the LP release; so 14 weeks in total)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= TROUBLE-MAKER/ LOVE POWER) (2nd week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (7th week) ( single “That’s Where the Happy People Go” charted #1 for 7 consecutive weeks prior to the LP release; so 14 weeks in total)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= DON’T TAKE AWAY THE MUSIC) (1st week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= TEN PERCENT) (3rd week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Washington, D.C. Discos:
(#1 = I’M GONNA LET MY HEART DO THE WALKING) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???.....;) well IS it????)

"Yeah, it's the SAME--- OLD---- SONGS....."

The Trammps are still #1 for the 8th week trumping their closest competitors, Double Exposure once again by 9 points (76 to 67). This is the 4th straight week Double Exposure have been thwarted from reaching #1 by you know who.

The Trammps stats:

A= #1; B= #3; C= #1; D= #3; E= #8; F= #3

Double Exposure stats:

A= #2; B= #3; C= #2; D= n/c (dropped this week); E= #1; F= #5

The Supremes move back up to #3, mostly courtesy of a #1 ranking on guest city chart F (D.C.); they are across the board on all 6 charts for the first time; ditto D.C. LaRue and Roberta Kelly ("Trouble-Maker") at #4 & #5.

However, this is the only week all 3 will have 6 chartings; next week each loses one or two charts.

Jesse Green drops down to #6 this week from #3 last week. But don’t count him out just yet.

Tavares' "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" moves back up into the Top 10 at #7 after a setback last week; all it is lacking is chart A (NYC discos!!!) and chart D which prefers another Tavares track "Don't Take Away The Music," which debuts there @ #1.

Divas Donna & Diana land at # 8 & #9, respectively, and budding Diva Roberta Kelly grabs a second spot in the Top 10 @ #10 with "Love Power."

As noted previously, the terrific "Don't Take Away The Music" is the most notable debut @ #16, along with a gem from Side Effect @ #40 (a cover adding vocals to a jazzy Ronnie Laws track, first released in 1975.) "Always There" stands the test of time, still sounding fresh and vital today. (I placed it next to a cover version from 1991 by Incognito on a tape I made--and BOTH sounded GREAT; Side Effect has not dated a whit.

In addition to 2 tracks apiece from Roberta Kelly & Tavares, this week Andrea True Connection charts 4 separate titles from their 1st LP (that means every track on the LP has charted!!!) ATC has titles @ #15, 18, 22 & 31. Also, People's Choice debuts 2 tracks from their new LP @ #32 & #39. Two former Temptations, David Ruffin & Damon Harris both chart 2 titles bundled together @ #17 & #37 respectively, from current LPs.

Personal faves from Boz Scaggs & Candi Staton get mid-chart rankings (#24 & #25)--both hampered by only one charting apiece; they will rise later.

Next week, we have 49 items-- with 8 debuts, 7 returns and 10 dropoffs. The Top 10 admits 2 new titles. Debuts include another title from the new People's Choice LP, in addition to the new John Davis & The Monster Orchestra & the new MFSB LPs. In addition, the flip side of the Barrabas 12" debuts along with new ones from The Whispers (their first appearance here since a one point/one week only charting of "Where There Is Love" on the very first disco chart from l0/26/74); Ashford & Simpson make their disco chart debut, along with something from Black Soul and last, but not least... the first appearance of a record with the memorable opening line...... "Tommy Mottola lives on the run." ;) Oh yeah...goodies are comin' just around he bend....

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

Column #86: 6/19/76

(NEW YORK) Just released as a single is "One For The Money," title cut from the Whispers' forthcoming LP on Soul Train Records. The disk, produced by Norman Harris at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound, has a funky feel to it, unusual when you consider that to date the group's main success has come with mellow ballads.

The song builds to a rhythm break, with another buildup following back to the full orchestra sound. Several DJs here have been doubling the break, making the song longer and even more exciting.

The new Zulema album "Suddenly There Was You" (RCA) has three interesting cuts: "Hungry For Your Love," with a good solid r&b feel; "A New Day Is Coming," gospel sounding and with a strong melody line, and "All I Need Is You," directed at the pro-oriented audience.
[pro-oriented?? :-o:???:…..oh maybe it’s supposed to be “pop-oriented”???]

Also, just out on RCA is Buddy Rich and the Big Band Machine's "Speak No Evil" LP. Knockout cut on the disk is "Fight The Power," featuring solos by Wayne Andre, trombone; Lew Soloff, trumpet, and Joe Farrell, tenor sax. The cut runs six minutes.

Sondra Simon & Simon Said's new single is "Mama Can You Meet The 6:15" (Atco). Without a doubt, this is the best effort to date for the girls who used to back up Gloria Gaynor. The sound here has some of the qualities of a Gaynor recording. A 12-inch disco disk of a 6:29 long version is forthcoming.

John Luongo, head of the Boston record pool, has been getting strong audience response to the New York Walkers' instrumental version of "Steady Flow." The song was played there on WBVF-FM's disco show and the response was strong enough to prompt a number of local DJs to obtain copies, says Luongo.

Several other spinners are also getting good reaction to the record. It will be released soon on the DCA label.

Jaguar, a local label out of Hialeah Gardens, Florida, has released a 12-inch disco disk from the Viva. The song, "Bandolero '76," is an interesting combination of funky guitar & drum with breaks and a Latin sound in between vocals. Actually, it sounds like two different records mixed together that work.
