| It's more than 10--but I made a tape containing the following early disco/Northern Soul gems..... Side A: 1) DISCO MAN - The Moments (4:07/1974-75??)(found this on a Brit compiliation--can't find that it ever charted here--yet it's vaguely familiar-- "I'm a disco man and I party hard as I wanna"...I think it may have been played on the radio in SF) 2) PARTY MUSIC - Pat Lundy (sometimes Lundi) (4:20/ 1975) (co-written by Melissa Manchester!!! "I wanna dance with you--rub up against your shoulder baby...all night through") 3) DREAMING A DREAM (vocal) - Crown Heights Affair (3:04/ 1975)--(discodisk sent me this on some Northern Soul compilation--I only knew the instrumental version) 4) EVERYTHING IS LOVE - Mighty Clouds Of Joy (5:01/ 1975--bundled with "Mighty High" on the Billboard charts) 5) WHERE THERE IS LOVE - The Whispers (3:53/ 1974--on first Billboard chart) 6) ONCE MORE WITH FEELING - The Whispers (3:22/ 1974) 7) REACH OUT FOR ME - Universal Mind (5:42/ 1975 - cover of Dionne Warwick/ Bacharach/David classic) 8. SOMETHING FISHY IS GOIN' ON - Universal Mind (4:13/ 1974) 9) TIME (vocal & instrumental) - Mighty Clouds Of Joy (3:18/3:36/ 1974--written & produced by Dave Crawford; earlier done by Jackie Moore; MC of J's is better!!) 10) HOW GLAD I AM - Kiki Dee (3:56/ 1975 - cover of Sixties Nancy Wilson song--mentioned by Moulton in one of his early columns--never charted however.) 11) MIGHTY CLOUD OF JOY - Mighty Clouds Of Joy (5:10/ 1974--which came first?--the chicken or the egg?? the song or the group??) 12) NEVER GET ENOUGH - Street People (4:25/1976 - Ray Dahrouge's group) 13) YOU'RE MY ONE WEAKNESS - Street People (3:10/ 1976) Side B: 1) SWEET, SWEET LADY - The Moments (4:37/ 1974) 2) I WANNA GIVE YOU TOMORROW - Benny Troy (5:12/ 1976) 3) ON THE REAL SIDE - Larry Saunders (3:31/ 1974) 4) LOVE HAS FOUND ITS WAY TO ME - Blue Magic (3:28/ 1975) 5) DO IT WITH FEELING - Michael Zager's Moon Band featuring Peabo Bryson (3:14/ 1975 - sounds like they listened to "Fight the Power" and lifted the crunchy bottom) 6) I'M YOUR PIMP - Skull Snaps (4:03/1973--again thanks to discodisk for this one on one of the Northern Soul comps) 7) SORRY, THAT NUMBER'S BEEN DISCONNECTED - Marie Green (3:14/ ??--hysterically funny diva in distress song "OPERATOR--I JUST GOT TA TALK TA THAT MAN!!!"--produced & written by Patrick Adams) 8. NINE TIMES - The Moments (4:34/ 1976--another desperate phone caller song (was Marie tryin' to call him??? The line was always BUSY!!!)--smooth & classy and not really a hit in the USA--but I instantly recalled it--maybe another SF radio tune???) 9) I'VE GOT THE NEED - The Moments (2:41/1975) 10) I'VE GOT THE NEED - Spooky & Sue (2:51/ 1975--cover of the Moments tune; nice cover) 11) IT REALLY HURTS ME - Carstairs (3:29/ 1973--apparently a Northern Soul classic--it's on lotsa comps) 12) I DECLARE WAR - Double Exposure (5:55/ 1978--recently discovered this gem that never seemed to chart anywhere!!!--I wrote a post about it and no one replied!!!) 13) WAKE UP SUSAN - The Spinners (3:29/1976) 14) YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH - Rhetta (or Retta) Young (3:00/ ???--cover of the Mary Wells tune) 15) FORGET THAT GIRL - Jeanne Napoli (2:26/1976--bouncy tune also recorded by De-Lite-ful --who later recorded as Maryann Farra & Satin Soul) |

| Ok, so the cd player in the car got tired of Cococmotion and Mighty Real. I decided to go a different way and listen to a cd a made about a year ago. I call it 70's Mellow. Mostly nice AM music popular at various times in the period. The compilation is 19 tracks long but here are the 10 I mostly listen to. 1 - It's Too Late 2 - Aint No Sunshine 3 - Band Of Gold 4 - At Seventeen 5 - Summer Breeze 6 - If You Could Read My Mind 7 - She's A Lady 8 - Philadelphia Freedom 9 - One Less Bell To Answer 10 - Until You Come Back To Me |

Transferred some more old 12"ers to minidisc and CD today. Al Wilson - Earthquake 116 BPM.....Loved this track ever since it was released on 7". The 12" is just relentless and chugs along really nicely in a different stylee to most other disco cuts of the time. Great Track!! Erotic Drum Band - Jerky Rhythm 121 BPM.....Yep, I like this track mainly because it has a pronounced latin tinged rhythm track that could mix with sooo many others. I'm sure they listened to Sultana-Titanic before they made it. Hamilton Bohannon - Cut Loose 114 BPM.....A typically funky, repetitive Bohannon cut that I used to play an awful lot, judging by the number of slide marks on the 'B' side near to the centre hole, where I'd sling the disc onto the turntable spindle. This track has elements of so many of his others (no surprise there then) and just about manages NOT to be average. Mike Mandel - Peg 121 BPM....Mike played some great synth solos with the Players Association and here he branched out on his own with a Steely Dan toon. Slightly bland Jazz Funk that is pleasant enough without really getting heavily clublike. Al Di Meola - Roller Jubilee 126 BPM....This did rather well on the Jazz Funk scene in the UK in 1980. It's uptempo latin/flamenco tinged acoustic guitar led and has just enough edge to be danceable and enjoyable. Mantus - (Dance It) Freestyle Rhythm 130 BPM....An interesting cut that used to go down relatively well when I gave it a spin. It certainly has a thumping percussive laden rhythm track that sounded strong over a loud system. Typical high energy Disco from 1979. The Glass Family - Crazy 137 BPM....Too fast for my taste, but I did give it a fair few spins BITD. A mildly interesting track, but not one that I'd go out of my way to spin. I still like their 'Smoke Your Troubles Away' better, as that had a fantastic feel to it (as well as druggy lyrics). Melba Moore - Pick Me Up I'll Dance 128 BPM....Superb Disco of the highest calibre that I played to death. I just love the understated vocal delivery by Melba on this track. Jackie Moore - This Time Baby 124 BPM....Brilliant intro that hooks ya from the get go. Ditto above track, again with vocals that are not pushed too hard. Pure class. Deniece Williams - I've Got The Next Dance 123 BPM....Great track that just oozed danceability. Sassy Disco that got everybody up onto the dancefloor. Solar Flare - Boogie Fund 122 BPM.... I'm soooo glad I dragged this one out to listen to over again. This was 'That's Where The Happy People Go' mark II mixed with a dusting of Disco Inferno. Really uplifting track that sounds just like the Trammps (was it them in disguise?) and had my dancefloor humming BITD. Solid Philly Disco sound from 1978. |

| Ouch Quinny :o  OK, since you took a shot at Rinder & Lewis, I'll go after Deniece Williams' I've Got The Next Dance. :P That'll never see my cd or record player. I love 'Niece esp. her song Free but Next Dance was part of that '80s pop drivel that was just irritating. |
