| Fuel for the fire: In yesterday's Hollywood Reporter, Grammy winner Janis Ian ( granted, NOT a heavy-hitter, saleswise) is reported to be encouraging fans to download her music from her Web site. Both NARAS and the RIAA contacted Ian and warned her that downloads were costing her money. She replied, "If a music industry executive claims I should agree with their agenda because it will make me more money, I put my hand on my wallet." Ian says Napster increased both her site traffic and her CD sales, adding that her sales also go up noticeably every time she puts downloadable tracks on her Web site. Ian said there are other issues more harmful to artists, including many standard contract clauses. "And for those of us with major label contracts who want some of our music available for free downloading--well, the record companies own our masters, our outtakes, even our demos, and they won't allow it." Ian concluded with a call for artists to join her in promoting technology and putting "the blame for the sad state of our industry right back where it belongs-- in the laps of record companies, radio programmers, and our own apparent inability to organize ourselves in order to better our own lives and those of our fans." Anyone remember Ms. Ian's one contribution to Dance Music???? Hmmmmm???

| Blaxman, Strangely enough, Janis Ian DID have a record on the Dance Charts, with a very distinguished pedigree, no less. Someone must remember.

| Janis Ian collaborated with Giorgio Moroder on a tune called "Fly Too High" from the movie "Foxes" with Jodie Foster. It's a moody, uptempo tune that charted in 1980. Very good.

| Before i scrolled down and saw the answer i was thinking that possibly myself, but, i wouldnt really call it dance music. It's more a jazzy kinda rock tune in my oppinion. But on the other hand, Marky, with you knowing the whole Bobby and Trocadero scene, i from what i know of it all so far could see this being played pitched down by Bobby possibly in a morning set. Am i correct or way off base here? DJ Jimmy M

| DJ Jimmy M, Bobby Viteritti definitely played this song. I have it on a tape. It's around 130 BPM, so a tad too fast for morning--BUT, on the way there. Moody and jazzy and danceable. It seems like this was placed near Gino Soccio's "Rhythm OF The World". I'll check to see what he mixed in and out of.

| I seem to recall that "Fly Too High" did pretty well on the dance charts for Janis and Giorgio. Perhaps due more to sales rather than club play. However, we did hear it at Trocadero! |

| ¡Foxes! I had forgotten completely about that movie. At the time (15 years old), I thought it really had insight about the young generation... also thought Jodie Foster was Hollywood's next hot babe! As you can see, in both cases it was a very serious misunderstanding! |

| On the "Reflections" party tape, Bobby Viteritti mixes as follows: "I'm Ready" - Kano "Night Drive" - Giorgio Moroder ("American Gigolo" instrumental version of "Call Me") "Fly Too High" - Janis Ian "Hold On, I'm Coming" - Karen Silver "S-Beat" - Gino Soccio "Party Boys" - Foxy "Rhythm Of The World" - Gino Soccio "Searching" - Change

| She needs the downloads as no one is bothering to BUY her music. Once she gets famous and is making money I doubt she would be giving ANYthing away for FREE> |

| Now talking seriously, didn't Courtney Love and some other artists cheer Napster when it first came out and blamed the labels for stealing royalties, etc. etc.? Of course, these fellas still don't own their masters... Now we see how smart Frank Zappa was to re-buy all his masters from the labels. And Prince started to do something similar... too bad he hadn't any hits lately. |

the proleritans that call downloading for 'stealing' forever. Here is a artist who confirms my thesis that the music industry hates downloads because they can't control the trends of where music is heading and what people will be tuning into like they did in the 80's they basically controollled what was music and what wasn't This is a step to musical freedom and those who oppose are obviously just puny slaves to the Record Companies Either too ignorant to know better or just saying what their "bosses" demand them to say........

| Dear sutnop, An artist might allow SOME free downloads to PROMOTE themselves. What I OBJECT to is the sites on the 'WWW' that ALLOW people to STEAL music without the ARTIST'S PERMSSION. Just remember, a theif is a theif is a theif regardless of what is stolen. |
