Need to start disco collection

I am thinking of starting a disco CD collection. I am a lover of 70' 80,s disco. I was not a dj at the time, just used to listen and dance to it. I do have a few but I want to know whats the best way to put together a collection of my favorites.

I do not want a huge collection. I would want to capitalize on my spending by getting the tracks that I specifically know of and like. For example if I produce a list or select from a list provided - that would be ideal for me. I also was not so into the radio edit stuff like "ring my bell"- I was more into 12" mix type like "this beat is mine" Vicky D.

Well, avoid almost any multi-disc set that Rhino puts out if you do not like 3 minute edits. The best way to check times is by others reviews and by cross-referencing the CD at http://www.discomusic.com/cds-index and on allmusic.com which is a database that often lists times.

I faced a similar dilemma as you do and now I have over 7,000 discs. The main problem is that in the US the reissues are not of the original albums and you have to buy 10 CDs of a group to get the album cuts and secondary tracks. Tavares and Sylvers are two such groups with fragmented discographies on disc.

Best advice: Go to the best oldies or African American music retailer in Atlanta and start there. If you buy imports online, buy directly from Amazon and not drop-shippers. Some artists with imports worth seeking out are Whispers, Chi-lites, Sharon Redd, Logg, Unlimited Touch, Strikers, ect.

If you collected music from 1990 only, I'd say buying online through Amazon's zsellers would be best. One can easily obtain common CDs from 1990-present like Boyz II Men or Backstreet Boys for very little. However, disco and funk aren't that common and tend to be more expensive especially second hand.

PS: That Vicki D cut "This beat is mine" is on a various artists compilation from Nervous records called Sam Records Extended Play. Its a bit tough to find and was issued 5 years ago and is now out of print.
