All beautiful cars! And, indeed the ZIL was only for the big bosses.

And we forgot one: The Dacia from Romania. It was the ancient Renault 12, built under license.

Oh we forgot more than one.
The Zastava - another eastern european take on a Fiat.
(these later became Yugo, I believe some were even sold in the U.S.)

Polski Fiat later changed name into FSO and released this - the Polonez. 80s lookin on the outside, early 70s technology on the inside

and of course....the finest of them all. The Trabi!

Why am I suddenly addicted to this topic??

Growing up our family car was a 1963 Oldsmobile Starfire in a metallic rose color. This baby was fast with a huge Olds "Rocket V8." My dad loved this car so much that he kept it till the 80s. The picture below doesn't do it any justice.

Bernie, it almost looks like the car we had in my youth: the Opel Admiral.

And also from Opel, the GT, a massive success here and a much wanted classic nowadays/

And for K-bee: The Moskvich:

Johan,
I still love the Opel GT. We had them over here as well during the 70s. When I was a kid I called them a "baby" Corvette. A great classic, thanks for reminding me.

Johan, That about covers all the eastern european brands!

The Opel GT is a fantastic car! Sadly you don't see them much around anymore. The same goes for my favorite swedish sportscar ever.

I'm not sure how many these were sold though. the Volvo brand weren't really one to be associated with sportscars.

You don't see many of them around any more because they all rusted away decades ago!

K-Bee,
A neighbor had one of those Volvo's when I was growing up in Jersey. Always thought it was a neat little car especially with those mini fins in the back. Saw one a few years back in Pennsylvania decked out in primer so they must have been restoring it.

Yeah Bernie, You're not likely to see many of them today unless it's in the hands of a real enthusiast.
Unfortunately the sports volvo's never really caught on, although they tried their hands on yet another model in 1985, the 480ES.

Not very fancy actually, it kinda looked like an 80s Honda Civic.

K-Bee, what a coïncidence, my mother had one in the early seventies: the PS1800 ES, same colour as the one on this pic (Bronze and hatchback). Great car but very heavy stearing!

Then she switched to Citroen

And then to Toyota Supra:

and later also Supra :o

aahh yes the citroen CX!! Love that model. In the 80s you could still separate the Citroens from other european cars in terms of looks. Unfortunately that's not the case anymore. There's hardly any design difference between french, german or japanese cars today. The individuality and "soul" has gone.

Yep, that's true but there are exceptions:

Yes, looks a bit like a Morris Minor!

We had a truck like this one in the 70's. Mack rules!!

Pretty exotic for a country like Belgium BITD!

And the other trucks were the Volvo F88 (strong as Vin Diesel)

Johan,
That Mack truck brings back memories for me. When our family owned the bus company we used to park and refuel our buses in a truck stop. Saw tons of Mack, Kenworth GMC Astro, International and Peterbilt trucks. Volvos and all these other strange makes didn't make their mainstream appearance until the 90s.
