discodevil you're a bloody ripper! :P tried a google search on +alison.mccallum +superman and low and behold, the first result back listed all of the lyrics so i could confirm it immediately. just my luck it would appear it was an australian artist who didn't crack it OS which is where i have spent all my time looking. and the answer was from another gold coaster? how bizarre! i went straight up the road to the second hand record store and there it was on vinyl from 1972. the only sad thing is, i remembered it sounding way better in my head for some reason. lol i think the version i rememember was the rerelease in 1979 so my next effort will be to get my hands on that. thanks to all for your help on this one. *old age brings many fond memories. sometimes of things that actually happened!*

Thats great! I think the 1979 version must have been reworked. Hope you find it! By the way what is a good second hand record store on the Gold Coast!

Came across your post while searching for info about this song myself. I can tell you for certain that it charted in the Australian charts in mid 1972. In May it reached number 12. The local artist (I am assuming it was a cover version) was Allison MacCallum.
