documentary film : "The Rhythm Divine, the story of disco music" Channel 4 documentar

A few years ago Channel 4 in the UK broadcast a superb documentary called "The rhythm divine, the story of disco" .. It proved so popular it was broadcast twice, with an extended version released on vhs video ..I own the video and watch it often ..Near the start of the documentary there is a description of djs in the early 1970s being frustrated with their short 7" singles .. and there is a short segment of film showing a dj from that period spinning a 7" single .. in the background you can clearly hear a superb zingy disco instrumental from this early 70s period .. what is the record being played? It's driving me nuts .. I've written to Channel 4, but they obviously think I'm insane .. Can anybody please help? .. Much love, Ashley, Manchester, England

Hi Ash, do you mean the music played over where Mel Cherin is on about Tom Moulton extending records at home & Pete Tong on about DJ's mixing at the break on a disco record? It comes between the video of 'Giving Up, Giving In' & the bit with 'Dr. Kiss Kiss'. If so I've always wondered what that great instrumental bit of disco music is too! Hope someone knows.

.. Hello Sandy .. yes it is indeed the track you describe .. it is not the Patti Jo track "Make me believe in you" .. it sounds like a proper instrumental disco tune (something like the Tony Valor Orchestra, or the Armada Orchestra perhaps?) .. the track actually features twice on the documentary .. first after Shirley & Co "Shame shame shame" while Frankie Knuckles & Ian Levine decribe the 70s Philly sound .. then the Three Degrees turn up & sing "Giving up giving in" .. then the same wonderful instrumental track features again while Mel Cherin & Pete Tong discuss early 12" singles & the cult of the break .. if anybody can tell me the name of the tune, I would be so very grateful .. I can copy the audio segment on a cassette & post it to anybody willing to post it up as a mp3 file .. (don't worry, I don't want the cassette back) .. Much love, Ashley, Manchester

.. well it's nice you have gone to the trouble of copying the VHS video to DVD .. I certainly recommend this title to anybody .. it looks like Channel 4 have no plans to release it officially .. but I already own the video .. 19 euros seems a little expensive for a DVD copy .. but it's essential viewing .. if you don't own this already, it's one purchase you won't regret ..
