Hey Jol,

You have been pulling out some nice old tunes. They sure bring back some memories.

Number 3 is: Baja by Mascara (1984)

Thanks DJ Phaze. My friend who was the lighting guy for the club gave me all these tapes. It sure brings backs lots of memories. I knew the DJ very well also. Unfortunately he died from AIDS in the early 90's. I'm restoring the tapes to cd. I have four more to go. It gets very frustrating because most of the music I know but I just can't remember the titles or artists names. This site is a godsend.

Greg Howlett was a well-liked, popular dj in the Toronto bar scene in the eighties. He is remembered as a genuinely sweet, happy man and damned gorgeous too! I remember that he was the featured dj at Chaps for the first couple of years it opened (1983) but I don't recall where Stages was. (?) I know in 1986, he was the resident dj at Komrads next door to Chaps.

(Sorry....don't know that first song.... )

Discokicks,

Stages was above the old Parkside Tavern on Yonge Street. It was considered one of the hottest clubs in Canada at the time. I believe it's first incarnation was called Bimbo's then Arnold Klieger and Stephen Cohen bought it and renamed it Stages. After Stages closed it opened again under the name of Avalon which was not very successful. Wally MacDonald was the resident DJ at Stages for years until he was fired for playing too much New Wave music. Greg took over for a couple of years. Both were good friends of mine. I agree Greg was one of the kindest persons I ever met. I was just given about 20 tapes of Greg's by Richard (aka Bambi) the guy who did the lights to to restore and put onto cd. It sure is bringing back many good memories. The sad thing is most of these tapes were sets of four or six of evenings at Stages but over the years parts of the sets went missing.

Interesting stuff! My jaunts to Toronto didn't really start 'til mid 80s and beyond (and pretty well stopped after the closing of the Barn ) I do recall the Parkside Tavern. I think the space above it re-opened for a very brief time called the Whynot (or something like that) around '87. I played music there on a very dead Saturday night....me and the ashtrays .

Toronto's gay dance clubs were fantastic back then. Times change I suppose but that excitement's just not there any more.

The Whynot was the upper part of the old St. Charles tavern a couple blocks south. It's now a condo. Yes times have changed There used to be at least eight to ten dance clubs back then in TO and now there is only two and they both suck.

Oh....that's right...above the St. Charles! Was the Parkside on a corner then? West side of Yonge?

It seems the Parkside and St. Charles closed around the same time. It's too bad that I wasn't aware of Stages in '83 - '84. I remember Cornelius (Corny's)....sad when that closed. My favourite times were Sundays at Showbiz in '86.

Yes the Parkside was on the South west corner of Yonge and Maitland. Loved Corny's too. I forgot about Showbiz until you brought it up used to go there too. I bet we know each other or at the least seen each other.

If my memory serves me well I believe the DJ was Teddy Bates. He's still alive and well and living in TO. I run into him ever now and then.
