CLUB DETAILS, MEMORIES, YEARS IN OPERATION & TECHNICAL DETAILS
"The best little disco club in town" is the only true way to describe Hang Out, although it seemed to happen overnight. For some reason it had a mystical feel to it, even though it was an outskirt rather dark and nothing to look at exterior. The parking lot was dirt paved and gated, but it was cruisy. The bouncing bass from the loud disco music could easily be heard in the parking lot, and approaching the two closed front doors just gave me a slight chill up my spine. Whenever you walked in, it was never dead or slow going. Fresno, a city in central California, had two mainstream gay bars in 1976, the other was "The Showbiz." But Al Veloz, the DJ, kept his music top notch at the Hang Out, and everyone who really wanted to party, usually ended up here. So, being it was a rather small club, mostly by 11:30PM, it was a very warm and close shoulder to shoulder standing room only, unless you were lucky to claim a bar stool somewhere. The music, at first, ranged from Silver Convention to Donna Summer, but it also included: Cerrone, Kool & The Gang, Boney M, Andrea True Connection, Hot Ice, Double Exposure, Salsoul Orchestra, Ritchie Family, Glitter Band, Undisputed Truth, The Emotions, Roberta Kelly, and Giorgio Moroder's Munich Machine. The dance floor was a wooden platform behind the bar, and they had a back patio. Ever since then, the city of Fresno has yet to replace this hot little joint with anything like it. Honestly!
