Nice place. But living in Ohio, I only got to see in one time.

  • LIz

Ipanema was a favorite disco for my sister and me. We tried to go every Saturday. It is where I became such a good dancer, people would later ask me in other clubs that were more touristy - "are you a professional", "are you the girl from the disco commercial"? :) Yes, a reunion at the new Ipanema is a nice idea, although I don't live in NY anymore, eventually if they repeat it, I would attend.

    Hey,
I checked out what they did to place, man! oh! man! it takes your breath away.dj pinky just commented on my project I was surprised, now I remember him.its been a long time.anyway so far so good I've been putting the pieces together and working on the music selections.I hope that i can put together this production,I would like to get people that would be dedicated to this.I want to leave my mark in the performing arts and for our generation to inspire them to go for it! in the long it will be a master piece! strawberry Icing on the cake,no doubt about that!

  • Greg

    YEAH,
I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE MUSIC SELECTIONS AND SCRIPT.WHAT IS GOING TO BE NEEDED IS A PRODUCTION CREW AND FUNDING PLUS A PERFORMING ARTS LAWYER FOR THE LEGALITIES.I AM HERE I SAN FRANCISCO,GETTING IT TOGETHER.I GUESS THE WORD NEEDS TO BE PUT OUT.PLUS A GRAPHIC ARTIST TO DESIGN THE POSTER.AND THAT I HAVE A BRILLIANT IDEA!

  • Greg

    http://www.touchnewyorkcity.com/
I have been there many times this year and although its not the same I can still feel the vibes! Sound sytem is CRAZY! OFF THE CHAIN DEEP BASS and the lighting is all Laser no crystal ball. The floor does not light up, but the laser lights do make up for it. Anyways get down there people a new disco that needs pioneers like us to bring it back! lol.

  • Greg

I've been busy putting together the music that will be injected to the screenplay.this is totally different than all the movies they made about our time.the title is stepp'n style "a dream that became a reality".the music itself will bring back memories of where you was and doing.it is also to inspire everybody that dreams can come true.it's funny,it'll make you cry and make you dance in the theatre or where ever.I've spoken to several people of our generation and the feed back was overwhelming.even some producers say it can work.you watch many think i'm crazy,I'm not.this vision has remained with me for over 30 years it is something that was meant to be.and I am determine to finish it!strawberry icing on the cake!

A reunion would be great. The good times at Ipanema with all the beautiful people that were always there.

  • jen

Would be so cool to have a "reunion" of sorts for Ipanema devotees!!!

  • Greg

All I can say is this place BLEW! me away. Although I was to young (16) at the time I was able to get in with a fake mustache and glasses - lol! When I got in I will never forget the way the place and the people made me feel - JUST LIKE A STAR! Im 40 now and I have been to a lot of clubs, but nothing compares to the IPANEMA DISCO! The woman were crazy beautiful. Brazilian, Puerto Rican, and so on and so on........
    Please come back!

Great to see the sharing of all the great memories from Ipanema. It was a dancers paradise with a super crowd of people every Friday and Saturday.

  • jen

We did Boombamakaoo, Studio 54, the Paradise Garage, the Limelight, all those clubs- but Ipanema was my favorite!!! I felt at home there. Thursday was our night, although we did fridays too.

  • jen

I am older now,-but I have memories that light up my heart all the time. I remember dancing off 4 lbs. in one night! I was then 107 lbs. so I could fly on the dance floor. The music was the hottest disco anywhere! I remember a crowded dance floor,-everyone in perfect sync, (you didn't stay long if you couldn't groove!) and the best nights ever!!! It was a dancer's paradise! It is without a doubt-my favorite club of all time! It would be nice to have a reunion of sorts....thursday night....disco, hustle......."The Tramps, Evelyn King, Kool and the Gang, everything the DJ made live!! Once again! For old times sake! I would be there!
Have been out of the loop for a while,-but give me the music and a good classic hustle partner,-and I'm back where I was happy!

  • Ronnie

I've got to respond to Tony and my bud Jen-WOW! I cannot believe I found this site. Ipanema's was the absolute happening place on Thursday night. Yes, as Jen said, we were quite intimidated in the beginning, but soon we were on the dance floor as much as the best dancers in the house. We were also afraid everyone going there would just be going to show each other up as far as who dressed the best. There were some clubs in Manhattan where people went to dress and just decorate the place, not dance. But to our surprise this place was not like that at all. Once we learned the Hustle we were right out there with the rest of the visitors, and yes we became regulars. What memories I have from this place. And, people look at me funny when you tell them, "No, they didn't play that song there," or "they didn't play that kind of music there." They were extremely select with the choice of music. I like to call it "hard core" disco. It's and experience that will live in my memory forever. Thanks for allowing me to share.

  • Tony

Jen, there's plenty of places to dance for the older crowd (the crowd that used to tear these places up!). Although I did go to Ipanema several times, I wasn't a "regular" there. I was a "regular" at several other NYC clubs and I was very much into the Hustle (as it was really developing and getting big right at that time 1975-1980). My favorite places at that time was the Copa, Bonds, La Bamba, Xenon, NewYork-NewYork... and there are several others. As much as I was into Hustling, I tended to hang around several of the Black clubs in NYC as well (Bentleys, Pegasus, Leviticus and Justines). I also did several shows at Ipanema (it had changed its name to Lola's) as a male dancer in a "revue".
I don't know where you live but I'm in South Jersey (Brick Township), just last night myself and several friends had an awesome time dancing and hustling at the American Hotel, in Freehold, NJ. It ain't no Ipanema or bigtime disco, but when the DJ starts and everyone hits the floor, believe me you'll have a great time.

  • jen

My friend Ronnie and I were invited to join some guy friends at Ipanema back in the seventies. Her and I were born dancing, and although we initially resisted,-we decided to check the club out. We went on thursday night, R & B, night. When we saw the dancing,- we started to think it best to leave....(were intimidated!) It was primarily a black crowd,- who were super-dancers! Our friend Larry, said "Listen, just relax....you'll be dancing that way in two weeks"......we danced, "that way" very soon, and it became an addiction. It certainly wasn't a place for uncoordinated, "bad dancers!" What a ball we had!!!! In no time we danced till they flashed the lights on and off-to closing!!!! I remember dancing on a tabletop with a partner-while two people held it up. We let loose to become very serious dancers, and regulars,- thursdays, mondays, and even fridays!!!! It was the joint! I can't stay up too late anymore...but the memories of how we "tore the place up dancing" will always delight me!!!! Am older now,- but would love to find a club that offers the nostalgia of "disco" from that time, for 50-ish people to once again-exercise their "hustle" saavy!!!! Please let me know guys-if such places exist and where!!! Will be there!!!

The first time I came to the ipanema I felt at home.the first record I heard was Cerrone's Jesuis music.there was a lady who knew how to dance and caught my attention, she had style.another one was voyage, and gino socio's "Dancer" man there some great dancers then.through the years I went around the clubs picking up different dance styles and throughout the late 80's.I finally came up with an Idea.why not make a movie,I created a script including the stage designs for different sequences.this production will have music that has been long forgotten,I mean buried.this musical would bring back some really good memories and all those who were in their 20's and 30's and remember what they were doing.this was classical era.remember mike theodores's "High on mad mountain",I love you dancer by voyage? Cerrone,I mean you would wear out your shoes. So I decided this,Why not make it into dance/drama/musical,with the styles of the 40's into the late 70's.there's a lot more, but I just want to say my daughter encouraged me to revive the musical and add the latest technology to it,with a blend of the cotton club, all that jazz ect..this will be dedicated to those who lived that era and who stood out in the crowd.it will make laugh, cry, and be inspirational.I've held on to this vision for a long time.and now its time to tell my story as one of the unknown dancers at that time.we style I called Stepp'in Style "A dream That became a reality! you're gonna love it. Its time to shine!

Thank you for the lovely words my dear Husband. I remember when you approach me with your green polyester suit and asked me to dance. The song that was playing was Romeo and Juliet, and 35 years later you're still my Romeo.

  • Pedro Felix

Ipanema's brings back sooo many memories. It's where I learned to hustle and more importantly where I met my wife. 35 years later we have been married for 33 years, had 3 great Christian boys and 2 grandchildren. Praise God!

    Peace and love to all!

IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN THE PERSON DANCING IN THE PICTURE WITH THE WHITE SUIT IS SAL PRINCIPE A CHILDHOOD FRIEND FROM WEST 70TH ST.

  • Gil

We had great times in NYC and especially at Ipanema. The crowd was the best there. I remember a couple of songs that were played from an import band from Spain called Barrabas and the 2 songs were "Woman" and "Wild Safari".

  • lisa

I was just listening to "You make me feel mighty real"..omg what great memories in NYC i love NY! had the best times there such a magical place danced every weekend could'nt wait till Friday. My favorate song is "Could this be magic" by Donna Summer among others i still can Hustle with my Brother lol~

  • Joe

What Dematos is saying doesn't make sense open till 4? Ipanema closed at 4 then we went across the street to the boomba as we call it and staying there till at least 5 or 6 am. I think they had a lower level they also had a lower level.
    I'm talking around 1975-76

  • ChiChi

im so glad i was raised in the 70s and 80s so many fun memories! danced till the wee hours lol~i miss you NYC your in my heart!! Manhatten your #1 :)

  • Sal Sorrentino

    To whom it may concern

Mr. de Matos is mistaken when he states that he was one of the owners of the Boombamakaoo. He was never a partner. He worked as an employee to guard the door and to make sure that visitors paid the $5 admission. When the Boombamakaoo was sold, I respectfully reiterate, the ownership of the Boombamakaoo was Sal Sorrentino (50%) and Jamil Degan (50%).

    Very truly yours

    Sal Sorrentino

  • JOAO DE MATOS

    What fantstic memories!!
I was one of the owners of "BOOMBAMAKAOO" (THE NAME IS FROM THE ALBUM FEELINGS, IT'S ONE OF THE SONGS).
You guys would shorten the name and call it "BOOMBA". I LOVED the name!!!
Does anyone remeber the last song we used to play at the end of the night?? HBTHEHUSTLRE DOES, it was, There I go, There I go...
Without a doubt GW - George Wheeler was THE BEST BEST DJ at the time!!
We had NOTHING to do with IPANEMA - the only thing we had in common was the owner was Brazilian as I am.
And beleive me, there was a lot of annimocity between us!
On some weekends I would would be at the door of "BOOMBA" with my wife (a stunningly beautiful blonde who has since passed away)
remeber my bodyguard "BIG LOUIE" (you guys remeber him?) IHe still around , he comes by my office every now and then.
The best was when we (and we were one of the FIRST!!) started staying open until after 4AM.
It was GREAT!!! My favorite song was "PALO....PALO....PALO...." or something like that!
My email is JFDM500@AOL.COM - I'd love to hear feedback!!!!!

I was also a frequent Hustler at Ipanema as well as La Bamba, Roseland, Peppermint Lounge, Playboy Club, NYNY and others. Even after Ipanema became Lola's, I performed several nights as a male burlesque dancer.... ok ok, male revue stripper, whateva! lol.... awesome experience. I too am looking for a good club in the NY/NJ area to get my Hustle on once again. Find me on Youtube (avp0713) or Facebook (Tony Vito Paccione).

  • julio

It was Roseland and then across the street to Ipanema for the late night or early morning hours for me. I was a hustler.

  • Susan

Just came across this site too. It's incredible how your teen years have a way of sticking with you 4ever! Life had a way of being more fun then, I'm thinking that's why it sticks. So I went to the Boomba, Red & White, Footsteps (was my first,so to speak) IP (not as much) Starship too, but not a fav and lots more. The Roof... would have never remembered that place. Was it in the hotel across from the old MSG? Damn that hotel is still there but yes the brain cells aren't:). My friends were from JFK in the Bronx, we hung out with Jellybean and Debbie. Does anyone remember the 310? Girls gotta know- Peace, love and good health to all of you old timers ;)

First timer on this site.Ip was my first ever club experience.I was not 18 yet.Suited up wishing I could hustle like the dancers I saw that night.I was hooked forever after that.I learned to hustle with my older sis, went to clubs every weekend of my life .Had the pleasure of meeting great people during those years.I reminisce almost daily.I went to Starship on 42nd and starting hustling big time with the dancing crowd. There I knew Eddie Vega(RIP),Sammie,Dante,a group of great girls like Estelle.Eileen,Joann,Yvonne,etc...The music was timeless.I knew a good friend Ronnie Valdes I used to hang with and meet up at the Copa after work on Fridays in the early 80's.I play them daily to feel good. The orchestration, vocals, uplifting feelings of the musicians and their instruments.Great sound system at the Starship Djed by Ernie.Turned me on to DJing as well. The crowd then shifted to Inferno on 19th and 5th with DJ Rene.I remember the Central Park fountain on West 72nd st where the crowd would meet up sunday afternoons after saturday nights of clubbing.I wish I could find people to hustle with here in Tampa,Fl.I had a great career on Wall ST.from 1981-2001. I moved from NYC shortly after 9/11.I worked on the 84th floor.Lost 61 associates. At least I have my great memories of the good times we had.Peace and love to all.

  • Couldofdancedallnight

Ipanema Saturday Nights! Roseland for the heck of it across the street...Casa Blanca for kiks--then LeJardin just to keep the party going! All Jersey girls out having a good time hustling. No where to go now--We can still keep up--only place in NJ is AC. The Philly people seem to keep it going...they still even have classic disco radio stations Saturday and Sunday nights.
Hustle groups at some of the clubs in AC. If anyone knows of any north Jersey or NYC dancing clubs please post.

  • vyniljunkie

Yeah, those days were special. I got a few years on you, my first DISCO was in 1971 when I saw JIMMY BURGESS at the SANCTUARY or was it INFINITY? Too many years have passed me by, and I burned too many brain cells, if you get my drift! I was just starting High School, but I was 5'9" tall, weighed over 220 pounds, and had a full beard. I looked much older then the 14 years that I was!! Before the year was over, I was a mobile Deejay, then in 73 I started as the deejay at The COPACABANA when MOBSTER PAULIE CASTELLANOS got me the gig! AHH those sure were the great years. eventually I came south to MIAMI like all good Cubans do!! Down here I deejayed until 1993. Now I raise my daughters, and write!!------ As for DISNEY, yes I have those passes for PARADISE ISLAND and both UNIVERSAL and DISNEY. We leave tomorrow some time. I haven't been there in three or four years. But this year we bought YEAR-ROUND passes!! Talk soon. PETE

  • gregg

I no longer live in the Big Apple. I moved to Greenwich Connecticut. Much quieter in the country side you know. Hey you mentioned in your last e-mail that you have passes. I hope you mean passes to Pleasure Island! That place is so beautiful I could live there. Oh! and to answer your question about who was the DJ at the IPANEMA? That was the one an only Pinky! The Best of the Best. Now as for what I use to do there well you see it goes a little something like this, I come from a large family vyniljunkie. My mom had three boys and two girls; I was the youngest. I believe it was in the year 1979 or 1980 I just turned 18 and my brothers and sisters would go out dancing a lot. They never took me because I was to young to get into clubs so one night they felt sorry for me because I would always have to stay home with mom & dad so they told me they would let me come with them. The plan was they would all pay to get into the IPANEMA and let me pay last if the guy at the door said I could not get in then they would say well we all have to get our money back plus my sisters 2 boyfriends and my brothers 2 girlfriends. To my surprise Vyniljunkie the guy said look don’t tell nobody I let you in OK! My sad face suddenly became a smile that made the guy at door laugh. Now for the good part, when I got in the door it was as if I was walking in slow motion. I felted like I was the man. I had on the badest polyester red suit & white shirt that had the biggest butterfly collar. if you were there you would have thought I was little Seymour The Pimp. Yeah Boy! Playing in the background was "Super Nature" by Cerrone, but what caught my attention was the DJ up one level who seemed to have power over the lights and the dance floor. I tell you Vyniljunkie that was the beginning of my love for Disco, and I will never abandon my love for Disco music especially my all time favorite the Salsoul Orchestra. Oh! how I love their hit song 'Its Good For The Soul".

Today I’m working on a Music CD that will be released this summer its a combo of New Age Dance & of course DISCO! I will post a sample or my link to listen to it, as I have promised Lisa another Buddy I have had the pleasure to chat with here on this site. Hey I got to go now but I will return when you come back on 4/3.
I wil check back from time to time to see if you droped me a word or to.

So once again have lots of fun and when you get back tell me all of the fun+excitement=Money you had in Florida! Bye vyniljunkie!

  • vyniljunkie

Yeah, there is something about Bernie's time logs that are pretty screwed up. But that's about the only thing that is wrong with this site. Where are you at, still in the Big Apple? This time when we are in Orlando, we got those passes that allow us to visit all the night clubs. So a 52 year-old and his extended family are going to tear-up the place! Sure I am!I can hardly move any more, never mind dance the HUSTLE!---- Tell me, was "Pinky" the ONLY deejay at IMPANEMA?? What did you do there?

  • Greg

you see what I mean its now 12:11pm in the afternoon. It is however March 25th they got that right. I'll try contacting the Administrator take care buddy and have fun.

  • Greg

Hey vyniljunkie have a wonderful time in Florida and don’t forget to do 2 things 1.Horror Hotel 2. Night parade of lights. I go to Disney twice a year and each time I go I have to do these 2 things. Oh! 1 last thing #3 SPEND LOTS OF MONEY! oop! sorry I thought I was in Disney land. Anyways have fun and I’ll talk to you when you get back. Bye!
P.S. Its 12:06pm these posted email have the wrong times.

  • vyniljunkie

Hey Greg, On Friday morning, I am taking my family to Disney World for three or four days. So when you get back on, I won't be around. BUT, after next Thursday, I'll be back. And I am always near a computer, and this is like my home site. DISCOMUSIC.COM is where I am always logged onto. I'll be back on 4/3.---- I remember living in Union City, NJ and all my friends going to IPANEMA, telling me all the fun they had. I only went there on my nights off, which meant once or twice a month on Saturdays. Do you remember the deejay's names there? Anyhow Greg, I'll catch you soon. Later!

  • Greg

Ah! what can I say. Now that I think about it there was a European presence among the ladies. what I can't believe is how many Artist from the Disco Era suffered when the 80's came. The new sound was Punk and of course New Wave!
Remember Billy Idol this is his new site www.billyidol.com and I must admit I liked Devo with their classic hit "Whip It", but here we are 2008. It never crossed my mine that while I was dancing at the IPANEMA at the age of 19; I would be reminiscing about the good old days at the IPANEMA. One last word before I eat breakfast its 7:59am March 25th 2008, If only they had invented digital cam recorders then! I'll be back Sunday night @ 9pm thanks for your reply vyniljunkie. Bye!

  • vyniljunkie

Greg, I worked at The Copacabana, a very similar club. I admit, the chicks at IPANEMA were more Latin, and to a CUBAN like me, that means a lot more. There is something about LATIN women, including those Italian women; I think it is the way they move, how they dance, the looks they give us. And both the COPA and IPANEMA had that. Still more at the IPANEMA. those were some great times!!! I can't stop thinking about those crazy seventies!!

Those lighted dance floors are history. The laser lights are hard to photograph I think. I had a really nice time with my crew. My girl said she prefers the old floor because the laser lights make her sick & dizzy. Anyways this is now and everything must change. I must admit my favorite memory of the old IPANEMA was the way everybody dressed. Today its to casual for me. Plus those Beautiful Latin Girls that danced like they were from Heaven, OH how I miss that. Ya Know what I mean vyniljunkie? let me know.

  • vyniljunkie

Thanks GREG. Just took a drive through their web site. The place looks great, but it really didn't show the light show or any anything other then the standard promotional pictures. Would like to see it in action. Seriously, don't you miss the ORIGINAL?? This looks like a CLASSY PRIVATE Club now. Where are that LIGHTED dance floor??

  • vyniljunkie

What can I say that hasn't been said, it was a solid 10 on my scale. It had everything you heart desired and much more. The dictionary should have a picture of it next to the term DISCO.

I went to the new IPANEMA Club this saturday @ 11pm. All I can say is WOW!!
This place has got to be the hottest club in NEW YORK. The NEW IPANEMA is called TOUCH and It touched my sole. There sound system is so clear that I swore when they played a tribute to Donna Summers I thought she was singing from the DJ Booth and the bass is so deep I thought my heart was going to explode when they plaid Justin Timberlake's cut Get Your Sexy On. Oh my God. you have to see this place to believe it. Im sorry the old IPANEMA was hot but this is on FIRE!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I thought I would miss the lighted dance floor but people believe you me when I say this is the future of digital lasers lights. OH MY GOD!!!!
Forget about those old crappy floor lights you have got to see what they do now! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Star Wars 3D look out!
Chow People got to go to the disco!

Hey Lisa I didn't forget ya. I've been in the studio going over the final remixes of my CD. I can't believe how long it takes to make an album. There are so many remixes and D,O's (Do overs) Lots of money were talken, but any way Theres a final release month I've been told Jan 08. One of the singles was played Saterday night at Webster Hall. The crowd really got into it. had to pay the DJ $50 up front, but it was worth every penny.
Lisa I can't believe how the club scene has changed since the Disco days people are very loose and crazy. I actually witnessed a couple getting in on from the DJ Booth. I mean really getting it on right there on the dance floor. Yuck! But thats Webster hall for ya!(not my style)
Oh check out this website it lists all the clubs around the USA.

    http://www.clubzone.com/h1/New_York/Nightlife.html

I will keep in touch sorry for the delay, but I hope it will be worth your while.

It was one of my favorite clubs while in New York City. A warm hello to all my Bronx friends. Keep on dancing.....

Its great to have people bring back the good times of those day.IP and Boom were the best. Did anyone go to Forbidden Fruit or Tagaris on the East Dide? IP had the looking women of any club and the music was tops.

  • Hbthehustler

Hi everyone, I can't believe I ran across this site. I'm one of the Dance Dimensions and am living in South Florida. I actually hang out with Billy Fajardo and I still get my hustle on down here. We have quite abit of New Yorkers that relocated and still are rocking the hustle. We dance at a place called the Palladium and another called the Gold Coast Ballroom. There are other places as well. So, If anyone gets the itch to get on the dance floor and practice those old crusty moves come on down...Don't be scared the huricane season is over. I loved those days and like many the Boomba was my first dance club experience and George Wheeler was the best dj in the world until I heard all the others. Sun, Sun, Sun, Sex machine, and the last song of the night was I think there I go, there I go, there I go. The one Franky Crocker use to play when he went off the air. As far as the dance dimensions we travel the world doing tours, tv...Don Kiersners rock concert on nbc in LA, We did the salsa concerts at the garden. Eddie went on the win Dance Fever and Star Search's Grand prize and Billy has become a world champion in Caberat and Theatre arts. Well, that's it.. Thanks for the memories.....

  • lavida

Oh Man - i have not come across many people that remember the Red & White - that was one of the first clubs for me - that then became the Starship Discovery One, then they renamed it just Starship - after that it was the Ipanema for me - wow this is awesome - i love remembering those hustle days - thats how i met my husband - it was awesome - those were the days!

  • DeeJayDoc

    Hey Hustler,
I remember the Boombamakaoo as well as other smaller venues. If you are interested in attending Hustle parties just run a search on yahoo for "Millenium Hustle" and ask her to put you on the email list for the Millenium hustle jams. Enjoy an old fashioned hustle party usually held in Manhattan at different venues on different days but always peaceful and fun. Great dancers to see.

  • hustler

No! Thank you for still wanting to remember a part of you that brought much fun and happiness to your life....

  • iremember

Boy, did those pictures bring back memories. I remember them especially the top two! How could I forget Billy and Sandra and the snake move that made them famous? I practically grew up with Eddie (yes, may he RIP) and Lourdes, but for some reason I remembered Nellie and Floyd in the group (although, they changed partners with each so often that I guess it easy to do that!) Thanks for re-confirming and setting my memories straight!!!!

  • hustler

The Ipanema was the beginning for the dimensions. The end came at the hands of the Chateau Madrid on Lexington Ave. That's probably the last time the dimensions headlined. Some old pictures of the dimensions...

  • iremember

I quoted knowing Nellie and Yvette of the Dance Dimensions, I should have said "Jackie" not Yvette. She danced with Hector. Too long ago I guess, I must of left some of my brains cells behind in some of these clubs!

  • DiscoMusic.com

    Hi everyone,
This is Bernie, the owner/publisher of DiscoMusic.com. We are seeking photos of the Ipanema and other clubs of the era to use in this area of the site. If you have any photos of clubs, dancers, recording artists and DJs that you would like to see appear here, please contact me and we'll set it up. Thanks and keep posting your memories.

  • iremember

Yes, I gathered that from one of your responses. I still still Nellie from time to time. I still see Nellie from time to time. Refresh my memory, the Ipanema the beginning and the end for the Dance Dimensions?

  • hustler

iremember, the reason I asked you about the dimensions was because I used to dance with them.

I remember Nellie and Floyd and the old gang.

They are really trying to bring hustle back in a big way in a few of the big cities. Believe it or not, they still have the competions like way back when. There are a couple of websites that you can go to that will give you some details on where to go and when. They escape me right now, but if you would really like them, just let me know. A very popular thing in New York now are the dance studios. Quite a few of them throw dances (alcohol free) where you can hustle (east and west coast style) till your heart's content. At at some pretty decent hours! I remember when you went clubbing late and stayed till the end and then hit the after-hour joints. Can't to that anymore! But it's fun to remember. The Ipanema was fun, but there were some many others clubs deserving of our feet. You just moved from one club to another, spinning like a top (and never getting dizzy)! (Can't do that anymore either!) Nonetheless, it was fun and I'm having a ball remembering and collecting the songs. Now I know how my mothers felt in the late 70's and 80's when she heard her 50's music. I'm luvin' it!

  • vtboricua

Wow . such memories! I used to hear Jellybean spin a lot back in the day. The best dancers used to go the IP. The latin hustle was/is a thing of beauty to watch! Too bad the dance floor wasn't bigger! Is there anyplace in NYC or the tristate area that one can still hustle? I don't live in NYC anymore but do visit from time to time.

  • iremember

I grew up with a couple of the girls in the Bronx (Nellie, Yvette) and also their partners (Hector, Floyd). Eddie Vega and I knew each other well. I do remember faces in my head, unfortunately their names escape me. I went to alot of functions where the dance troups of our time were either rehearsing or performing. Don't remember how long the Dance Dimensions were around, but I'm thinking that it had to be around 1977 (that's about the time Yvette and I were in High School together (Theordore Roosevelt on Fordham in the Bronx)). I even remember when Jellybean played a club call La Miriposa (?) on 181st Street in Manhattan.

  • hustler

iremember, I'm curious. you say you know the dance dimensions, how do you know them?

  • iremember

All the clubs mentioned have my head spinning. Ipanema was a favorite many. I remember the Dance Dimensions and I know most of their members as well. I came out the the Bronx where alot of pioneer dancing came from! We called the Boombamakaoo the "Boomba" and although I was supposed to be too young to hang, I was at all the clubs! Ahhhh, I remember!

  • yo

OMG..OMG..OMG...I can't express how I feel right now I've been so emotional since I just happen across this web site I wasn't even looking for anything like this... I'm not really sure how I even ended up here, but I will not be to far away from here on in...The Loft, The Garage, The Inferno, Starship International, Bonds, The Copa The BOOMBAMAKOO , Red & White if you ever wanted to feel the music back then these were the places to go... Dj's Larry Levan (Garage), David Mancusso (Loft), Joey Palmertier ( Starship) , George Wheeler (Boobamakaoo) had thier fingers on the pluse of the music back then... When the hustle came out the Boomba was the place to go for the finest dancin around then you stepped it up a notch and the Starship was born...The Starship by far had the largest club except for "Bonds on 43 and broadway..." 3 floors 1 for the masses, one for the acts, and one for relaxing, then there was ...the Loft (which i might add had a few address changes thru out the years and from what i've heard dave is still throwing loft parties) with thier trade mark membership card " A picture of the little rascals" ...opened 1 day a week Saturday @ midnight I remember staying sometimes until 5pm Sunday afternoon never wanting it to end. Now Dj Dave was by far the most original Dj around to me, he didn't use a set of headphones to cue the next song no fancy blending of one song into another his thing was let the song end then start the next one... hell if the last song was HOT play it agin " Living on the front line. or Time Warp and the flip side Nobody's Got Time both by - Eddy Grant or Ain't no Mountain High Enough - Inner Life He's the only Dj I've seen get a round of applause after each song... Now the dancin was a whole nother story if you couldn't dance when u came in you sure knew how when u left... the Hustle, Freestyle, The Bus Stop I was fortunate to be one of the top 20 dancers in NYC when the Hustle came out and I've been to my share of clubs in NYC but give me freestyling @ the Garage or the Loft any night... I've been slowly adding to my collection of old school disco, dance
house music and burning it to cd's...I started out Dj'ing way back when Jellybean and Ray (Pinky) & Kool Herc & Clark Kent & Dutchmaster were just street jocks playing in local gyms , parks, rec centers, house partys the point i'm making is that i've read about some larry bashing and no matter who played in the garage it was and always be larry's House just as much as the funhouse was Jellybeans or the loft was Daves each one had there own style weather it be blending or just dropping the needle to the groove they all did what had to be done which was to keep us DANCIN as David Mancuso has always told me "LOVE IS THE MESSAGE"

  • hustler

Thanks for that bit news. I often wondered whatever happened to a lot of these clubs after the hustle died.

  • MRV

After the hustle started to die down, this club became Lola's of 52nd St around 1982. It was still owned by the original people, a Brazillian guy by the name of Roosvelt Ramos and his wife Carrie, who used to be married to radio personality Chuck Leonard.
It did mostly after-work dance music especially on Thursday.

  • hustler

Wow! I don't remember those clubs, but my older brother used to tell me about the Red & White, Cork & Bottle, Tropicalia, The Roof, Stargate, just to name a few. Oh what I would give for another night of dancing hustle in a suit with a beautiful girl in satin dress...

I REMEMBER BARNEY GOOGLES. WHAT A GREAT PLACE. FUN, FUN, FUN.

  • ALS96

Hustler, I remember all those clubs and some of the underground clubs of those times. I have a feeling you and I might've been in the same places at the same time. I was a roaming DJ so I got to go everywhere and spin; I was also part of the inner circle so even when I was not spinning, I was there. do you remember the Red and White? It was one of the first clubs after the Cheatah (early 70s). What about Love Town in the lower westside of Manhattan.

  • hustler

ALS96 - Can't believe it! Good to read that someone else remembers the Boomba and George Wheeler. I remember the Inferno, awesome club. Do you remember these clubs? The Stargate, the Roof, Latin Times, Barney Googles (on 86st), The Corso. Many more to mention here. I'm trying to compile sound tracks from that time. Let me know if you remember any...thanks

  • ALS96

Hustler, I remember the Boombamakaoo with its DJ George Wheeler. My first club ever was the Boom, after that, I was hooked on clubs. Did you ever go to Infernal on 19th between 5th and 6th?

  • hustler

Hey! Any of you out there still hustle?

  • DoTheHustle

Memories, memories. I went to Ipanema mostly on Thursday nights. It's where I heard Donna's Love to Love you Baby for the first time. I recall it vividly.

  • hustler

Loved the Ipanema. I used to dance professionally for a Hustle dance group called the Dance Dimensions and IP was were I did one of my first shows. Question: Does anyone remember the Boombamakaoo. It was over on Broadway down the block from the Ipanema and Roseland?

  • vtboricua

I too remember going to Roseland. That place was huge! Sometimes the dancefloor at the Ip was crowded. The DJ used to play the best tunes!

  • discodjii

My god, the Ipanema was a great spot. I remember going from the Ip and crossing the street to Roseland. Definately the spot to be in if you enjoyed the hustle.

  • vtboricua

I used to love to go to Ipanema on Saturday nights. A classy place that required one to dress with style. The best hustlers used to go there. Also , there were some fine women who went there.

  • Don't leave without adding your club memories!
