Jul 08, 2011 | 6:04 amI gotta say that people say drugs are bad but for me it was a passage to adulthood and I did a lot of drugs in the funhouse. Made a huge amount of friends. Everyone loves the the "Fast times at ridgemont high guy". I once had a bread truck and after the club closed I delivered people all over the city. Went down 7th ave the wrong way for 20 blocks with no police. Dont know how we all didnt go to jail.

Jun 08, 2011 | 12:53 amLoved this place. Such good energy and a whole lotta soul.
I came in 3rd at a breakdance contest there in I think 1983. The only white boy out of about 20 contestants. The judges were actress Susan Lucci and Rory Sparrow from the Knicks- lol.
Anybody know if there is any way to get the footage from one of the owners?! I know it was taped because I remember seeing the footage after (rockin it!).

Apr 19, 2011 | 9:53 amWow.....I looked at these pictures and comments a few years back & today I had "memory lane" back in my mind. I started going to The Funhouse after Infinity's had a fire if I remember correctly. For me I started going to The Funhouse in the summer of '79 through '81 maybe '82......my memory is shot! I had THE BEST OF TIMES there. I saw Mimi's named mentioned in gratitude for some of her pictures that she posted. I live in Florida now since 1990 but when I go north to see my mother I look inside the nighttable next to my old bed in my old bedroom there is her phone # written on the wood inside the draw along with others. I wrote them there so I would never lose them. I remember so many of you. I was from Queens & if my friends were'nt going I would go by myself religously!!!! Always on Saturday. A few Fridays & Saturdays. Thank you all soooo much for those memories. I knew Ronnie well. Most of you would probably not remember me but I was there speeding my a** off & dancing till my leg muscles would cramp at about 6:00am. Then off to breakfast(maybe) then to anywhere from upstate NY to the mountains or the beach. I would arrive home Sunday night......maybe. I remember Sly & The Family Stone playing one night & he just passed out on stage. A couple of hours later he was back up. I remember Carmen....a beautiful black woman....tall & sexy, Pete the freak with many others. I hope he's still alive. Jimmy Ragona with his bowling shoes dancing with Carmen on the main stage. The funny thing was there was never a fight, at least that I saw. Everybody got along......all 3000. Later when the musice changed to techno & there was alot of break dancing that was it for me. There will never be another place like that. Thank-you all for making that happen!! ----Joe

Jan 25, 2011 | 8:34 pmI remember the grant opening of Funhouse.Joseph Remy was the doorman. LaClie was appearing with a cast of 40 artists at a long cost. Remy wanted Funhouse to be the next 54. At 10.00pm the opening Remy turned away 99 percent of the public. He wanted only freaks,He would not let anyone in .Jerry went crazy, but Remy would not bugde. This happens 2 nights in a row,by the end of the night Jerry gave Remy a kick in the a**.The rest is history.Best oflife Ant-knee.
-
Dec 30, 2010 | 9:46 amOh yeah, almost forgot, one of the BEST songs that was played at the Funhouse was SLANG TEACHER by Wide Boy Awake.
-
Dec 20, 2010 | 9:08 pmThe best memories of my life were had from 1979 to 1983, my brother Roland was working at Studio 54 at the time (79) and he brought me there for the first time at age 14. By 1982 I was 17 and a regular pary boy, Gothams, roseland, Xenon, Act III, The Underground, Danceteria, Studio 54, and my all time favorite THE FUNHOUSE. I did my first tab of mesc in the Funhouse, got laid a quite few times that I went there, saw the best dancing ever, did a lot of dancing myself, and the music was from another dimension. Then I joined the Marines and it all changed, I found that the old saying "you can never go back" did indeed apply because both the Funhouse and I had changed...But I miss it so and think of those days more often as time passes by.....
-
Dec 18, 2010 | 11:11 pmI saw Madonna here on New Year's Eve 1986 I think it was...she did Holiday and Everybody. I have a few snapshots of it, her, on stage, throwing the black rubber bracelets into the audience.
Good times!
-
Dec 13, 2010 | 10:27 amWow!! Fun House (1982-1984, my second home..every Saturday night. Breakin on the stage in the back, going to Orchard the next morning. memories are still fresh in my mind. the best of times. Cory was my girl back in those days. Hit me up if you see this post! :)
-
Nov 15, 2010 | 2:23 pmI lived in the Bronx in the early 80's; the Funhouse was theeee place to be back then! I have many great memories; we'd "break night"; sleep on the train after a night of dancing and partying and I'd get home just about an hour before I had to start my shift at C-Town... those were the days!
Saw many a new an upcoming artist make their debut on stage at the Funhouse as well. I'm so old now but thinking about those NYC nights spent at the Funhouse will always make me smile!!
-
Oct 29, 2010 | 8:18 amWow the Funhouse! Zulu Nation vs. The Ball Busters, The get high balcony & the sound system. It's couldn't better than that in the 80's. Oh yeah, Conan the bouncer with his oversized flashlight beating up various kids and the walk back to the No.1 train thru the projects and not get mugged. Those were memories.
-
Sep 24, 2010 | 11:50 pmHey Joe,
You are looking for the wrong song, that's hy you can't find it. What you are looking for is "Automan" by Newcleus
-
Sep 24, 2010 | 7:51 pmTHW, I met the Indian on the train 2008, he was down and out, just got out of jail, selling hand watches. He looked beat, it broke my heart.
-
Sep 24, 2010 | 7:45 pmFirst time was new years 1980. I was in a guido 3 piece suite. Wow, I'll never forget that night. The entrance, the big black balloons dressing the whole ceiling, the sound and light system, and the free doughnuts. Most of the crew from O.Z. went back home around 4:30. I stayed with a couple of friends. I was at back stage when I heard Lady America, Wishbone and Can't be love. Next week end I was back in jeans and pony sneakers with a cut-off. Bought a DJ set to help pay for the records I heard at the Funhouse. I loved that place and still go back to it in my sleep.
-
Sep 21, 2010 | 12:21 amThey just dont make clubs like this anymore. Everyone went nuts here. The place didn't close until the crowd thinned out. Except for one time when the cops came in and shut it down for the night. I still remember one of the bouncers saying, OK we gotta shut down, everybody go back to Brooklyn.
My weekends were going to the Funhouse.... leaving the Funhouse and sleeping at the beach... Brighton or whatever... then do it all over again. Forget Studio 54, the hottest girls were at the Funhouse. I remember Run D MC performing, August 5th 1983 (had to google the date) Went home with some girl from Bay Ridge named Beverly that night. Ahhh the memories.... I can go on and on. Hey yo DePalma where you at?

Jun 08, 2010 | 11:08 pmNice club back in the early 80's. I saw alot of groups perform there back in the day. Fat Boys, Dougie Fresh, The Rapping Duke (Da Ha) LOL, Madona, Jeckyl and Hyde, The Ultimate 3, Lisa Lisa, and the list goes on. I used to hang out with my crew from Brooklyn on the balcony in the back. I used to stand in front of that clown mouth and watch Jellybean do his thing on the wheels of steel. One of my favorite joints he would play was Key West- KASSO (The Jellybean Re-Edit)! I remember the FatBoys pulling up in a tow truck with them sitting in the car that was being towed (LOL) Those were the days! We would take turns going to the Fun House first and then the Roxy or visa versa. There were so many clubs back then! People walking up 10th Avenue could be going anywhere. The Roxy, Funhouse, or the Octagon! I cherish my memories about the Funhouse and so many other clubs that I experienced back then. Those days were priceless and the music from that era could never be replaced or forgotten! Peace to the Funhouse!
-
May 28, 2010 | 4:45 pmSo glad I found this site. First club I ever went to. What memories...Rockers Revenge..Walking on Sunshine..What great times..Bronx Rocks always!

Apr 13, 2010 | 10:14 pmI have a question. I waz there 81-84 and at the end of the night when you were just exhausted they used to play the Mexican which you knew the night was coming to a close and then they played something maybe called "metalman" the lyrics go something like this, "They met one day in a summer storm - His sences said that it was wrong - she was a young lady of 23 - he was a child of technology" This has been playing like elevator music in my head for over 26 years. It had a squeaky beginning that dropped into a hard bass that those 18" base bottoms on the the floor would just shake you. I'm a maniac but I love that song and could never track it down. thanks buggers.

What can I say THE FUNHOSE was the best club...

Mar 04, 2010 | 2:28 pmOMG I am having a flashback of my youth. I am one of the few people who hung out all over the club including the bathroom with Cheryl. I would dance on the back stage with the buggers. Hey what was the guy who used to wear bowling shoes and dance all night?
I danced to all music, I hustled on the main floor and bugged all night long. Most remember me as the black girl who danced in her roller skates.
I also remember when the club was ready to close Jelly would play the same 4-6 songs and I would wait for Beat the Clock.
My main girls were Kelly and Jane. If I could find them I would be so happy.
I remember coming home on leave from the Marine Corps and going straight to the Fun House and wanting to cry because it was closed.
-
Feb 26, 2010 | 7:53 amI loved going to the Funhouse...after I was finished doing a gig...I used to show up there at 4 or 5 AM.till closing.....We were all friends...Bean, Tony, Randy, Ricky, Carmen...I remember one night I ran into madonna in the booth...we had gotten to know each other a few years earlier when I was going to Brooklyn College and I was head of the Concert Committee...and booked a band called Madonna to play at Bkyln College in 1978... I booked her band after meeting them and seeing their set at CBGB's...it was a nice memory...it seems so long ago and then again it seems like yesterday

Oct 03, 2009 | 10:26 amThis place is amazing, Thanks David for telling me about it.
I remember taking the "F" Train from Brooklyn to 23rd ST. and taking a cab to "DA House".
Meeting my Brother Tonio, all my friends from Brooklyn out there.
David , Joey, Dean. We all worked at Joe Tag Trucking, That's the Ryder truck that used to get filled to go to Manhattan Beach Sunday morning.
Mark Bugger, Eileen, Tina Punk , Mimi, Staci Buckethead. Then Breakfast at the diner on McDonald Ave near Ave I, Across from the flea market in BROOKLYN.
The Music was a lifestyle, Jonathan, Ted Jellybean, the special mixes, the tracks they'd be working on that no one in the world would here but us @ "Da House" Then when it was played on the radio we were like, What New ? That's OLD....
God Bless You All, We Rocked DA House.

May 29, 2009 | 11:16 amWOW!!! I can't believe how many people have posted. A few years ago, I checked these websites for anything related to The Funhouse and there was really not much on the Web. I thought it was just something that I perceived as something that was just amazing in my life. I've been totally affected by my time at the Funhouse(1979-1982) so much so that until this day I primarily listen to and seek out any music related to what Jellybean played until the wee hours in the morning. I live in Naples, Florida now and would love to hear from anyone who was from The North Bronx who hung out upstairs.
Dennis D., Rob S,. Tracy, Dawny, Brian, Lynn C,. Angelo & Albert(twins), Richie Dirt, Freddie Dirt, Freddie, what's up?
Write back or post it here....

Jan 18, 2009 | 4:25 amI just found this by accident... I was telling my step-daughter & her husband about the Funhouse... I can't believe it... I lived there for 3 years... Me & my crew from Brooklyn would some how manage to get there rain or shine, cme hell or high water every friday & Saturday... We had the "hook-up" with Ronnie and would get in for free. We got to hang with Jellybean & the other DJs & Madonna when she was there (most Saturdays) It was Me (Robert) Ronnie (Richie-Rich) Mike (Fat Mike) and a few others. I really missed that place when it closed. I always hoped thet it would re-open, but as they say, se-la-ve...

Sep 30, 2008 | 12:46 amI lived in Brooklyn and my friend Ray was good friends with Johnny Mo who worked at the club. I was real young at the time but I had a way of gettin in there. Johnny and Ronnie would slip me in through the door behind the front desk, lol. I was then inroduced to Joe Monk. I later ended up working with Joe at Plaza Suite and doing some construction work for him... If you remember me Joe, whats up!! Joe, tell your nephew Peter I said hello. But i have some good memories of the Fun House. Crazy stuff up on the balcony, sex in the fun house cars, lol. I even got to hang in the famous DJ booth a few times. By the time I started going to the Fun House it was a legacy already for yrs. I used to see the big Fun House clown on some record store wall on Ave U for yrs before I even got to go there. Then every time I went I could not believe I was even there... It was great to be a part of it. And its still great to say I was there!

Jun 24, 2008 | 1:29 pmTo whom it my concern. I was a bar tender at the Fun House for 5 years. I was the only bar maid with black hair. I have a Fun House wallet. It's red with the clown face on it. Even though I worked there, It was always a party to me, Kept all of you in line , but it was a good thing. Joe, Monk, is an old and dear friend of mine. Grew up together. I have wonderful memories of that place, if any one knows where Johnny MO, is , tell him I'm looking for him.To all of you. Hello again. Do any of you remember me? I was always there. God knows how many drinks I served you, and how many times I looked out for you, and kept you in line.Do you remember ME?
-
Jun 24, 2008 | 4:03 amOh my gosh the pics were great. Looked like you guys were jammin. I read the comments though and it doesn't look like many were happy with the venue...hey no worries, there is going to be a next one right!? Hope to have one here in FL also. Any former FH addicts here in FL? Email me @ nfs.kg@hotmail.com so we could chat. By the way, I don't know if everyone on here knows this but you can see some very cool funhouse memories on Youtube.com. Type in Funhouse and there is an excellent video with WKTU showing off Adam kick boxing. THen type in "Confusion" or New Order and you will see awesome coverage. Lastly, type in Planet Patrol and look for the song Didn't know I loved you" and you will see more awesome video coverage. Keep this going guys, maybe we could get together all the old funhouse addicts like me under one roof one day and get thousands just like the old days...I believe this can happen and it would be awesome.
-

Jun 19, 2008 | 11:24 amOh my gosh, what memories and WHaT INcredible songs you guys brought back to me! Gosh I loved wearing my red and white striped shorts with keds and cut off shirts to the funhouse where we could dance til 8am and hear the song "Mexican" as the doors would be opening...Morning sad mornin..lol. I have a few songs that I didn't see here...remember Stone Fox Chase? That has to be up there because I think Funhouse is the only club that ever played that song...and of course how bout Tony Cooks On the floor - I betcha you can't say ooh ooh aah I betcha ya can't say aah aaah. That was classic...well I am in FL now and WISH so badly that I could be there for your reuinion...just to dance til 8 am and watch all the kick dancers reuinite would be worth it alone. They were the hottest men in any club I ever seen, with six packs and cut off shorts, chinese slippers and head bands..lol well we could do without the headbands haha. Funhouse rocks! Keep this going guys!

Jan 21, 2008 | 10:36 amMy name is Mike. I was from the Sheepsheag Bay projects. I knew many of the buggers. We would do our thing to get polluted then have fun all night. I was a little younger than them so I sort of just watched for awhile. I looked up to the buggers. Darlene was so pretty and confident back then. Tough too. I was friends with Kenny who died in prison last November. He had the funhouse clown tattooed on his arm. We were bad kids at the time. The things we did for money still amaze me. Amazed the judge too who allowed me to go in the Marines instead of Jail LOL. I left in Oct of 81 and would come home on leave and see the Funhouse through the changes it went through. So many friends were dusted now. Kenny went and did 3 1/2 years in prison for the same crap we did together. Younger kids were break dancing instead of bugging. Since we had urine tests in the Marines, I had to stay straight so it was pretty boring ;)Actually, I gave it all up for those four years and even for four years after. Not a drop of alcohol even. If I could have, I would have stayed away from trouble. Even in the service, I saw guys getting locked up for that crap. I miss those Funhouse days though. For some reason (who's house did I get it from), I had a real 35mm camera and took a few pictures. I regret not taking more. I should have taken pics in the summer of 81 when we would all go back and sit on the benches after breaking night at the Funhouse. Bobby Perez brought the buggers back to chill in the projects. Adalis Leon who became a singer/actress/MTV VG was part of our circle. Not a bugger but a girl from the area who liked to hang out in the projects. Her sister was hotter I must say ;) Howie and Mark, Joey do-it. I remember Joey wanted to be a cop and we thought that was nuts. They said he had a fast heart rate and was disqualified or something. I wonder why LOL. I hope he is the one who I am talking about. Ronnie once came over to the apt on Ave U. His car got the window smashed if I remember. A Cadillac. I have one pic of Mark Bugger outside a store on Ave X. If it is the same Mark. He has a red Cocaine shirt on that looks like a Coca Cola shirt. He is blowing smoke out I think. A very clear pic that looks like it was taken yesterday. I will have to look in the album. I saw Bobby MOO Moo over the years. I gave him his pics from that day and he looked down and was stunned. Him in his youth. The pics came out from under plastic for the first time since 81. Ann sent me a pic in the Marines that I still have. I think it is her, Jill and Darlene in the back of the Funhouse. Ann was a pisser. Thought she was Marilyn Monroe for a while there. She would lock onto a guy and call him Joe (as in Dimmaggio). She was so pretty with those dark haired features. I used to ride around with Jill. She had a taxi that her dad owned if I remember right. She was so sweet. People felt bad for her but we didn't. She was just one of us. Someone said she passed away. I hope not. That hit me the same way when someone told me a few Marine buddies were killed when I was in Beirut in 83. Anyway, peace and love to all of the people I crossed paths with. Especially the buggers. If our kids only knew!

Jan 08, 2008 | 4:20 amits funny how everbody seemed too young to be ALLLOWED IN THE FH.myself included i remember the first time going there,i think it was halloween 81,i was in 8th grade!my older sisters had to take after bugging them for months.i put on a cheap "sheik"costume(a plain white shheet with a head band around to conceal how young i was)going through the maze of mirrors and hearing the awesome sound system i knew this place was special.i was a little shy at first but litle by litle i started to dance.i was more into jellybeans mixing though and i couldnt wait to go to school (jhs 217) in queens and brag about going to the funhouse.thanks to my sisters for putting up with me...disco circus is definetely their anthem.
-
Jan 04, 2008 | 7:46 amDino? As in James & Dino?
Yes I remember smurfing to Planet Rock in unison - lol.
FH was real live, though I don't think everyone truly realized just how influential it would come to be. With all the press on Paradise & Loft, I don't think enough people knew about FH.

Mario , you are so right on this subject. I say it's one or the other...
drugs burnt the brain or the fact you'll never find a book store in an italian neighborhood.

Dec 28, 2007 | 10:33 amHello All. I enjoyed reading your comments. This is great. I was only 16 at the time and had to sneak out of the house because my Dad didn't want me to go to the Funhouse. It was all good times. I was there for a few of the raids and I was so nerdy at the time, I found them exciting! LOL. LEE BOTZ, what's up? It's Debbie from Ozone Park. we used to hang with Mike (Gary Ganu's brother who got shot) on Lefferts Blvd. I remember your other friend Debbie from Staten Island. we also hung out with Wendy from Howard Beach. It was fun!

Dec 28, 2007 | 6:36 amHow come so many of the posts have incorrect spelling and poor grammar? The Funhouse was filled with petty criminals from the ethnic neighborhoods of NYC. I should know, I was one of them. But at least I learned how to spell in the last 30 years.

Nov 02, 2007 | 4:19 pmSo I was at the FH - Dam it's hard to remember- 1980- through 82... I worked 2 days a week made 66 bucks Of cause no one I knew finished school we all dropped out of F.K Lane But those 2 days I worked was for the FH. When I was there Angelo was at the door. Of cause Ronnie - wearing his feather boa. Jelly Bean was there. I'd get there 10:50 and drop a double barrel And dance my a** off till 7 and start heading back to OZ. I stood with all the guys from the All in the Family Newstand and we danced on the center stage... Gosh Now I'm 43 and my son is a year older than me when I first went to TFH...
I have to vote for

Sep 16, 2007 | 4:35 amI can't believe the pictures on this page. It brings back some real wild years there for me. 1980-1982 There is actually a picture of Pete the Freak! God I had some unbelieve fun at that place. I also noticed a picture of Ronnie. Those Saturdays(and alot of Fridays) were just .......I can't even put it into words. There will never be another place like that again. It was just a huge party with great music. Anybody know of Jimmy Ragona??? I'm just glad to see some people are still alive from there !!!!

Sep 13, 2007 | 7:33 amHey Kim, I remember the night Madonna performed with the wireless mic and it was cutting in-and-out on her. That was about the time those mics were relatively new. Anyway, she stopped the show so they could change the system to the wired mics, and she was on stage baby-talking to Jellybean that she still loved him and "you wouldn't do this to me, would you?"
This was right after they had broken up, I was laughing because I think it was the first time she was embarresed. I'm not to fond of Madonna. I'll tell you that story another time.
Until then...
Benny

Aug 20, 2007 | 11:21 pmBenny D - I will never forget that night-
Shannon (let the music play) was there. Me & my crew were supposed to be her back up dancers that night. At the very last minute she decided against it. She complained that with us dancing No one would be looking at her. So after all our hard work, new costumes and everyone expecting to see us perform, we were out.
Well I went off on her and I was asked to cool off outside. THE Best part was... When I came back in, Shannon was rehearsing her song and she threw the mic down on the floor, It was Madonna's mic (Madonna was rehearsing too) Madonna was pissed and went off on Shannon. I was so happy!!! We went on to bigger & better things anyway. I'll tell you The Fun House had the most amazing entertainers perform there! That place was the best. It was my home away from home. I still have Herbie Hancocks Albulm that he handed me when I was hanging out in the VIP room near the DJ booth.

Jun 08, 2007 | 6:49 amHey Everyone,

-
Jun 03, 2007 | 10:49 amHey Everyone,
Unfortunately I have a little bit of bad news. The June 23rd party is going to have to be temporarily postponed and moved to a later date. The reason for this is this party has simply grown way to big to hold in the venue we origianlly booked.
In the best interest everyone and the party, we will have to find another location, and possibly another date.
The last thing I want to happen is to have the party raided and shutdown or have someone get hurt because too many people were in the club. It would be unsafe and unfair to everyone, especially those making plans to fly or drive long distances in from another state.
Also, we will be filming a movie about the Fun House live on that night!! So if you were originally unable to attend you will get a second chance.
I am already working on alternatives for this, and hoping I can still do the 23rd, but right now I have no guarantees as of yet. I am hoping to have a few answers in the next couple of days.
I will be in touch with everyone and keep you posted.
For those of you who already have their passes, they will be honored for the future date. New passes will be issued.
I truly apologize to all of you from the bottom of my heart for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Thank you,
Scott Kaplan
aka
DJ Juice

Keep the memories coming.

May 09, 2007 | 3:17 amBenny,
I do remember when Shannon played, and wehn James Brown was there. 2 of many nights remembered.
You might find some lost friends and acquaintances here, www.funhousebuggas.com
-
May 08, 2007 | 4:32 pmI found this page by accident, but it feels like I'm in a time capsule. All the songs, names, stories, great times!!! Anyone remember when James Brown appeared? It was a Sunday night. The 'House was rockin that night.
Then there was A Saturday night when Shannon ("Let the music play"), played at the club I deejaying at and had to get to the 'house cause she was do on stage by 1:00 am. She put me on the guest list and when I got to front door, Ronnie did'nt believe me. He checked the list, and there it was; "Benny D + 3". I was on cloud 9 that night. Anyone remember that peformance? The crowd was absolutely crazy for her that night, she was in tears. Those are some quick hits from me. Those times can never be duplicated, but nothing can ever change our memories. Nice talking to all of you, enjoy the rest of the stories!
Until then... Benny

Feb 27, 2007 | 3:48 pmI can remember taking the PATH train on Saturday night from NJ. Walking up the block on W 23rd st you could hear the thumping of the base coming from "New York's #1 proven sound system" (That's what the flyers say.) I have several of them in great shape I might add some 20 years later. I even have one from the night James Brown appeared. I was a DJ (weren't most people) and have many of the 12" classics in storage just screaming to be placed back on the turntable once again. Please keep me in the loop when a reunion in 07' is organized. I would like to go back to a time that was much simpler than today.

Jan 10, 2007 | 10:05 amWell its hard to say for sure it could be.
I credited its listing to the site I found it at
http://www.vjsproductionsinc.com/mixtape/index.asp?typ=2
There its listed as JB live @ the FH.
But I like yourself wonder too.
Being taken out of the context of a whole night leaves alot unheard. And to add it really could be anyone @ the Funhouse or anyone anywhere for that matter. There are so many hands that it might of passed before posted. Think of the telephone game.

Jan 02, 2007 | 12:44 pmWow, I can't believe I found this posting. I use to work at the FunHouse when I was 15 yrs old passing out flyers and cleaning up when we closed down at 9:00 am! I remember Madonna put my head under her skirt and told me to stop being a pervert during the middle of her act while I was sitting on the outside of the stage. I was 15 years old, 120 lbs soaking wet and man was I embarassed!
They were great times! I wish I knew about the reunion I would have flown in from L.A. just to be with the old gang.
Joe from NYC

How the heck are ya? Long time huh?
What a small world. I found out about this site on this Thanksgiving. A friend's niece from Funhouse printed out the picture of me, Gina and some other girl in front of Funhouse and told me about the reunions and this website. I cannot believe I never thought Funhouse had a website. I saw the pictures of you, Danny, and Anthony (aka "Rat"). Wow! What a blast from the past. I am sorry I do not have the time now to chat some more but, we definately have to get together to play catch up on things and people.
I DEFINATELY WANT TO ATTEND THE NEXT FUNHOUSE REUNION!!!
Take ie easy!!!

Oct 29, 2006 | 5:24 amMorning Dancer,
I also had some good friends who were lost to dust one would smoke with anyone anywhere she really didnt care as long as she was high. She was kinda funny though she would change songs like Just Begun to Dust Begun. But she did ruin many nights for me with her addiction. Things really got bad for her last she was in jail, a real shame.

Oct 29, 2006 | 1:36 amSince this is a ‘disco’ site, I wanted to point out a delicious re-mix of an old Leo Sayer tune. (Don’t make fun of him just because he’s a white guy with an afro.)

Dave the Rave, I remember that. It makes me remember the dark side of the FH, though. I lost 2 friends 'in the dust' - not physically, but mentally. Very sad to see the damage it did to them.

I could not remember her name, but Darlene sounds right! The middle girl had a sister -- and once again, the memory fails with the name. I think that's her sister in the pic I posted above (3rd from the left).
As for the girl on the right, her name is Cindy. You know her? There's no way you can't know me, if you know her -- at least by face. We use to be tight.
Marialisa: You know your music! Emotional Disguise was one of my faves.
Name this tune:
"They met one day in a summer storm
Her senses told her that it was wrong
She was a young lady of 23
He was a child of technology…
He wasn't programmed to understand -
Though technically he was a man
Love wasn't in his capacity...
I'm a little may-ey-hey-ey-an
I'm made of _________
There ain't no way to ever love you"
Try to guess before you hear it.
You can hear it at DJ Dynasty’s site for free:
http://www.musicv2.com/artist/djdynasty
Look for: “Funhouse Mix” Some electro funk of the early 80
(Emotional Disguise is in the mix, too.)
Enjoy!

Oct 21, 2006 | 3:25 amWow, talk about stumbling on to a page that stirs up memories!! One person above asked if anyone remembered Bobby Anderson from OZ park. That's me, but I was from the Bronx. We just hung out and ventured out to chill with people from OZ, Brooklyn, Jersey, etc. I hung out at the middle stage and was one of the first to start the kick dancing craze. We were all into martial arts at the time. In fact, one day I slept over my friend Johnny Spaceman's house and had no sneakers since we went out to a dress up club the night before. I had to borrow his chinese slippers so I could dance right, next thing I know the following week everyones wearing chinese slippers and kung fu pants.. Those were the days. My crew was Ronnie Bam Bam from Jersey, Frankie Scooter (BX), Johhny Space (Bx), Bobby Bones (Bx), (the whole Allerton Avenue, Pelham Pkwy, Arthur Avenue, Morris Park crew combined). I was good friends with people from all over like Sal sex machine (brooklyn), we made circles and battled with Lenny and Todd, etc from jersey. The OZ boys hung out; joey Gallo, Nicky L., Sal Bianchi from Canarsie. I miss those days like crazy. Me and Ronnie bam bam hung at the front desk with Ronnie B. alot. I danced in two videos from the Funhouse. I was in "Confusion" by New Order throwing spinning kicks and also did the Planet Patrol video filmed there " didnt know I loved you till I saw you rock and roll". That was one song that bombed :). Anyway, thanks for bringing back some good time. Peace...

Oct 21, 2006 | 1:37 amMarcoh:
In Amsterdam? Great city! Great people. Been there.
Marielisa:
I use to wonder the same thing about the background buzz in Remember, too. Wasn't it in French? I haven't heard it in years. It's still on vinyl for me, and I don't have a turntable.
It use to give me that feeling like trying to grasp at a deep memory -- a feeling that prevails with muffled words that get cloudy over the years.
I'm sure it was a deliberate effect.

Oct 18, 2006 | 4:15 pmDave the Rave! You use to go to Romeo & Juliet's, too?
They never played songs like 'Romeo & Juliet' and 'Come to Me' at the Funhouse. We had a different playlist there.
And yes, the boys' room was in the game room. You don't remember?
I can never forget the girls' room. It was an event walking in there. I have no idea what went on in the boys' room, but let's just say, the party never stopped.
-
Oct 18, 2006 | 3:57 pmNicholas, you said, "The best dancers from N.Y.& N.J. hung out at the Funhouse."
No doubt.
Can't wait to see your pics.
I've got one big heart for everyone that ever danced there.

Oct 18, 2006 | 12:06 pmMy name is Nicholas, this is great reading all these stories about the Funhouse. I danced I with my friends Romeo,Armando,Jose,Rio,& Dana plus our girlfriends at the time.We were by the middle stage were the dance floor started.Romeo to this day says the Funhouse was the BEST club of all time and I agree with him.We danced all different styles of dance loft-kickdancing-uprock-poplock-B-boying. The best dancers from N.Y.& N.J. hung out at the Funhouse and I learned from watching them.We also did 2 man helicopters and 3 man. I used to pick Romeo up and put him on my head and spin so fast that Romeo called it flying.I remember watching Lenny and Todd on the other side of the stage doing there thing and you can't forget the b-boys at back stage like Chino from Incredible Breakers and the Dynamic Rockers what battles I had the plesure of watching. This place had it all the best DJ JELLYBEAN, the music, the lightshow, the SHOWS "OH MY GOD THE SHOWS"!!!there are so many artist who performed there it will take me to long to list.the people themselves, the energy was crazy. And it was a Phenomenon in it's time. Thanks JOE for giving us the Funhouse.I will email again with some great stories and pictures. Thanks again for the memories. I have that Purple album too, its worth something like 60 dollars.

Oct 15, 2006 | 4:27 pmJoey Cam,
The night Planet Patrol was there, Jellybean didn't end up spinning that night.
It was Junior Vasquez who did a guest spotlight night on that evening. I'm not sure why Jellybean didn't do it.
But I do remember that they gave away Colored Vinyl Albums, and I stored mine in the back of Junior's Records in the booth with his OK while I went back to dance. I retrieved it at the end of the night.

Remember the game room? I have a pic of one of the pinball machines, too -- somewhere... still digging for the buried treasure chests.

Oct 14, 2006 | 10:27 amScott, Ditto.
Dave the Rave, those flashbacks are crazy, aren't they?
Joey Cam, I want someone very familiar with the layout of the place to look at the full pic and tell me exactly where that Jester was. I am guessing that it was by the entrance.
It was snapped in August 1982.

-
Oct 13, 2006 | 5:18 amHey Joe Monk,
You mentioned 4000 people and RunDMC. I remember that Randy taped the show without thier permission on a $2 Radio Shack cassette, then after playing it 3x a night, RunDMC approached him and asked he sell them the cassette. Since Randy & Run DMC were such good friends, he sold it back to them for $2000 and then they printed it on vinyl.
-
Oct 13, 2006 | 4:29 amI sure hope to be there. It needs to be a big enough space with booming speakers that will wake Wisconsin up.
We need lots of people for that. We'll wait until you get off the cruise ship -- or just keeping having reunions until you dock. 8-)
Marialisa: get someone to scan it for you. Let me know if I can help.
The following photo of the Funhouse Ladies' Powder Room was submitted by Morning Dancer.
Photo description: If you don't know Cheryl, ladies, you've never been to the Funhouse.
I think Cheryl got more complimentary smokes and drinks than anyone in the House.

Oct 12, 2006 | 1:54 amMorning Dancer,
I checked out all those videos great stuff put them on my favs. I agree with your comment on belonging to a clique, everyone in the funhouse was good by me. I can remember years later seeing people in the underground , latin qaurter and any other club that came after and you would always recognize and be glad to see someone from the house. I have some matches also and towel and a pink cut off t shirt regretfully i had a black jacket someone borrowed it and that was it, just hope they took care of it.

Oct 11, 2006 | 10:38 pmThose are yours, too? What's funny is 2 out of the 3 flyers that I have are the same as yours. We both decided to keep those two.
I e-m'd that site to tell them how much I liked the front entrance pic - especially in contrast to what it looks like today.
Good ones, Joey.
My Jester should be up soon.

Oct 11, 2006 | 6:35 amI told that site owner I would be looking for FH matches! I use to have a matchbook collection -- from all the different clubs I use to go to. It was actually a very nice collection.
Just don't ask me what I did with it.
LOL. I probably trashed them when I was in a housecleaning mode.
I'm glad you still have one! Those were by far the best matchbook covers in the club circuit.
I would love to have a scan of that. Is that possible?
I loved those drink tickets, too! So that's your contribution, huh? Great.
I have pics to arrange and edit for display. I can't show them all. '-).
Do you have other pics?
Just this morning, I submitted a pic of artwork from one of the walls to that site.
I have a very nice one of the backstage clown. Not many people noticed the artwork on the walls. I use to.
The owners were very creative with the design and concept of that place. That's what sticks with me.
-
Oct 11, 2006 | 4:21 amThanks for that site I am going to check it out in a min. Do you have any pictures of the club? Did you check out the slide show on the other site? Check out the flyers and the drink tickets I sent in. I just found an old silver book of FH matches.

-
Oct 11, 2006 | 3:27 amYes, we were close to the bar, too.
Who knows? Maybe we bumped into each other at the time...?? Could it be so impossible? It was crowded enough.
I never cared which clique anyone belonged to. Anytime I met someone from the Funhouse -- then and now -- and I use to get stopped ALL the time by strangers who recognized me from the House --
There was always a special bond.
We know what fun is. We can't explain why.
-
Oct 11, 2006 | 3:06 amJellybean Era. Jonathan Fearing played some great stuff too. My friends and I were from Canarsie, we stayed at the middle stage on the side where you get the drink tickets.

Oct 10, 2006 | 4:03 pmJoey Cam, yes -- but mainly, my intro to the place came through friends from Ave. U.

Oct 09, 2006 | 3:52 amMorning Dancer,
I said weeknight not weekend, it was like a Tuesday I remember being so exited an extra night at the House! I mostly hung out around the stage I always made sure I was able to sit on the stage for the shows. Loved to dance on the stage right after the show and till the morning. Unfortunately i had a friend who loved to hang out upstairs and then look for me when she got a little a lot rather, messed up. I would then have to get her a drink and sit her down somewhere but I always went back to dancin.

Oct 08, 2006 | 3:41 amYes, Hot Tracks! Groundbreaking. The first time music videos aired on a major network. 'Confusion' was there!
However, I do recall 'Confusion' being taped on a weekend. Maybe I have it mixed up, but it was definitely a packed night that clubbers were out partying. People didn't show up as extras while the club was closed for a video shoot.
That's what I admired most about the producer of that video. He captured a reality in action - more like a documentary. There's nothing fake about it, including the pizzeria and the subway scene. That was where she worked, she was my friend, and that's how we use to travel to the Funhouse.
Other videos were shot there, with the club closed, like this song's:
http://www.undergroundhiphop.com/store/detail.asp?UPC=ELN80912
I never liked that song, though. The video was weak, too.
They filmed a jazz dancer 'in my corner' of the dancefloor.
As you know, everyone had a place. Whenever I meet someone who went to the Funhouse, the first question is, "So, where did you hang out?"
Everybody had a spot like their own real estate. It was their House address. LOL>
I remember feeling violated that some other dancer was using my spot on the dancefloor for that video.
I can be very territorial.
HAHAHHHAHA
Where did you hang out, marialisa?
-
Oct 07, 2006 | 4:14 amMorning Dancer,
I haven't downloaded it yet but I was there when they did the confusion video it was a week night if I recall, and it was sometime after the song was released. In fact I was there for most of the Hot trax recordings I can see Carlos Dejesus sitting in the clown like it was yesterday.I am going to check this out now.

-
Oct 05, 2006 | 11:40 pmMarialisa,
How true that was for me, too! I was saving lunch money for the weekends! All of my other friends had allowances and were 'allowed' to go. I can't believe the risks I use to take just to make sure I was there every weeekend. I had the STRICTEST parents! Every weekend was another mission: how do I find the money and what is my escape-from-the-house plan? HAHHAHAHA
That's when I learned, where there's a will, there's a way.
HAHAHAHAH
I was always a picture buff. These days, I call myself an amateur photographer. It's a hobby that I don't have much time for, but the point is, I HAD to find money for pics, too!
I regret not taking more pics of the cool artwork on the walls, but I have some that ended up in the background accidentally.
Maybe I'll set up a little website for the handful of pics I do have -- the ones safe enough for public display, that is!
Nice chatting with you.
-
Oct 05, 2006 | 7:46 amMorning Dancer,
I do not have any pictures and you raised a ? in my mind why not and the only reason i could think of is that in 82 i was really young and money was scarce for me I had to save all my lunch money for the week to get clothes to wear for Saturday at the funhouse. Ofcourse my mom had no clue it was the old i'm sleeping at so and so's house.I do have other items although i wish i had saved more guess i did not have the foresight that what was going on would have such an impact on my life.I would love to see any pictures you have, or share some memories.

Oct 04, 2006 | 10:32 pmMarialisa,
I'm not sure if I ever had a t-shirt that said underwater, though I loved that song. Funny thing is, rummaging through old knick-knacks, I just found an old funhouse flyer with 'Underwater, Harry Thuman' written on the back of it. Someone in the DJ booth (Who?) wrote it out for me when I asked them what the name of the song was. I guess the flyer marks the date.
I was there in '82. Got any pics? Post them. I may not be the morning dancer you think I am, though.
Peace.
-
Oct 03, 2006 | 12:04 pmMorning Dancer,
Did you wear a shirt that said underwater and danced on the main dance floor? I know that person's name I just do not want to say unless it is you. I was in the Funhouse from 82 till it closed in August 85. I guess I was part of the gen X crowd. And yes sweet g was a very smooth sounding rap with a great beat.

Oct 02, 2006 | 4:44 amIt's 5 minutes before 11. The line is down the block. It's sub-zero degree weather, but we made it.
Sal is at the door. He sees us and waves us to the front.
We're in.
"Here's my number and a dime. Call me, anytime!" is pumping through the speakers. The heat steams the mirror mazes as we weave through them, rushing to get in and through the crowd and make our way to our corner on the dancefloor.
Uh-oh. Madonna's in my corner. Who does she think she is, stealing our styles and calling them her own?
Whatever.
Let's dance, gang. This is my house. My Funhouse.
Mi fun casa es su fun casa.

Oct 02, 2006 | 3:17 amDoes anybody remember the song, "Games People Play?" I didn't see that on anyone's list.
let me know if anyone has a copy, please!
As for the theme song, Martin Circus' "Disco Circus" wins on my list.
You couldn't control the crowd when that came on. Then, again, was there any moment you could control that crowd?
My faves include:
Harry Thuman's 'Underwater'
Tantra's 'Hills of Katmandu'
DJ's, please let me know if you have 'Games People Play'
This group is going to reincarnate at some point -- including all the artists that made that music of the era.
It was so powerful. It was so amazing. You had to live it to know what unbelievable it was.
It was the best bunch of party animals I ever had the pleasure of freaking out with in my entire life.

Sep 26, 2006 | 2:23 pmWOW!!! I am blown away by reading all the stories and the MEMORIES this site has brought back. I was 15-17 yrs old and took the path into Manhattan to make sure we got there before 11 to get in free and not leaving until 8 in the morning. We hung out at the center stage watching Louie & Anthony dance for hours. I remember one Easter morning when the lights went on Louie was yelling HAPPY EASTA JELLY BEAN - to this day me and my sister still say that to each other. Lee Botz - I remember you - you used to date my friend Theresa from Newark. My sister Mary Ann has some pictures - we will post them. I have a pic of me & my husband at the fun house on my refrig. The Fun House was a time in my life that I will NEVER forget. Thanks for the memories!!

Sep 23, 2006 | 10:53 amHey BettyBoop, I dont seem to see anything, I tried from a few different places and no problem. One thing it might be is www.djdynastymusic.com redirects to the actual site. Try www.musicv2.com/artist/djdynasty
I hope that might help.
Thank you for listening, I knew there were people out there somewhere.
-
Sep 23, 2006 | 6:27 amI have been trying to get on djdynasymusic.com again and for some reason the page is taking forever to load or doesn't load t all. So, if you happen to read this djdynasty please check out your site and post back here when its back up and running. It's a great site and I love listening to the old funhouse music but I was only able to hit your site once.
Thanks

Sep 22, 2006 | 3:53 amA FH towel? Wow! They didn't have those when we went (78-81)! Sure, give the new wave of Buggers towels. We'll remember that Monk! LOL
-
Sep 21, 2006 | 4:42 amThe Funhouse.....What can I say, we lived there from 81-85 when the NYC residents petitioned to have the club closed down. I guess all of us walking through the buildings to get to the train didn't help. However, in all my days of dancing and club going there will never be a place as good as the Funhouse. Me, Lorraine, Christine, Fran, Vicky, Ronnie, Jimmy from the Bay, Frankie Blue, Steve Skates, Lil Dina, Jimmy C, Marina, Gina & Lisa from S.I., Marlena, Louis & Anthony, Looney, Rob OZ, and wacky Denise too! All we knew is that we "gotta gotta get there". We didn't just hang, we danced our asses off till 8:30 the next day and if I might say, we rocked the house. Johhny Moe and Allie D were two of the coolest boucers I have ever met. We were a family! Jellybean, Tony Smith, Randy & Ricky....the best foursome ever combined. Ahhhh, and my main man Ronnie or shall I say my main gal pal. He looked out for me the most, I'll never forget sitting upfront with him at the entrance collecting passes, he either loved ya or not. I am so glad he loved me. I would die to see him again. I seen the reunion pics above with him in them, how times change, he isn't as flamboyant and he once was. But neither am I. I am happily married now with 3 beautiful kids and life now has different priorities. But, I would help arrange a reunion if it came to be. Advertising is the way to get the word out, radio (Paco & Joe Causi), ads, flyers etc. If there is a big response we could make it fly. I'm sure Joe Monk, Jerry, Angelo and Ronnie would get on board. Hey does anyone remember the Funhouse towels...My idea...Since lots of us used to head to Manhattan beach with our shirts I told Angelo the towels would be a hit. I still have my shirt and towel :) My best friend is still Lorraine and she has many pics of us at the Funhouse we'll try to upload them real soon!

I don't know about how many you would get away with in a 77 Honda today, but we had 6 or 7 in my friend Andy's VW Rabbit back then, with all our bags with changes of clothes. It was alot of fun making those late night runs to The House. I do remember some of the names you mentioned as well.
