Odyssey a.k.a. Odyssey1 Disco was an under 18 bar and huge Disco. Lots of fun with DJ Chuck E Starr.
I used to go there with Ina Liberace (Liberace's neice) and later she met her friend Kristy McNichol there. We used to try and freak out straight girls who were there with there gay boyfriends. One time Elton John came in. Always packed with hot people. Toni Basil used to practice dancing there.

Description: (1981-1982) We may have won the award for driving the most miles to DANCE at the Odyssey 1 and then drive all the way back home, to SAN DIEGO. And we did not do drugs, nearly crashed every time due to falling asleep in the car. Linda and I brought (Soft Cell) Alex to our little club in Escondido and made him dance to his infamous song and let's just say mouths were hanging open and all dancers froze, what a fun night! Getting ready to go see my dandy highwayman, Adam soon. Loving the '80s!

Feb 08, 2008 | 12:05 pmHey everyone. I was just curious. What "era" of the Odyssey is predominant here? I see discussion about a party but I went from 75 to 81 so I'm not sure if there's anyone here from my time.
Good to see you all either way.

Feb 07, 2008 | 6:13 pmDoes anyone know what ever happened to little Steven.. the cute blond bartender? He was about 5'7" The last i heard is that he was working for some construction company somewhere...

Feb 07, 2008 | 9:50 amthat's sad to hear about cooter... i didn't know him well, but i do remember him. cute little guy. very sweet.
coincidentally (since i've been obsessed with this message board lately and reminiscing/romanticizing about my years in hollywood), an old friend of mine that i met at odyssey found me on myspace just last week (christie betts- diamondchild on myspace). hadn't it been for the cheesy profile pic that i'm using from when i was 15, she probably wouldn't have recognized me. lol
if any of guys have a myspace, feel free to add me (even if we didn't know each other then). :)

Feb 05, 2008 | 4:59 amA couple of years ago I found a box of those Free Admission during the week cards they handed out at the door on the weekends. Most of them had phone numers on them but a lot of them are in prestine condition. Funny thing.. I never got around to buying an Odyssey T-shirt back then. I figured I had time because I thought the Odyssey would always be around...
-
Feb 04, 2008 | 9:05 pm"WOW..and I thought everyone was dead...LOL I just called David Rubinstine to see if he wants to do an Odyssey Reunion Party with me ...I still have all the music! -
Feb 04, 2008 | 11:57 ami had an odyssey shirt that an old boyfriend gave me when he worked the door but it became really thin over the years. i might have it around here somewhere. i couldn't imagine getting rid of it although i'm sure it wouldn't fit me now. lol
clockwork orange sounds fun. i wish i was closer. i'd definitely be into it. with the exception of death guild, the club scene in sf sucks!
-
Feb 04, 2008 | 11:55 amWe could get there early and reserve a table, but it does get really crowded after 11pm because Bruce and Mike's Evil Club Empire is the largest LA alternative dance club scene going right now with Clockwork Orange, Perversion and whatever they replaced Dungeon with.
I'm not sure who does club Hell but Phoenix knows and I've had friends try to compete with them for a weekend re-ocurring gig and they all lost. One time events at The Hollywood Athletic Club have done well but everything else trying to compete with ECE has failed. Bruce and Mike just have it cornered becasue they have been doing it steadily since Helter Skelter in the 90's
If they want to try it I would say the best thing to do is talk to the owners at club 7969 (formerly Peanuts) and give it a try as a one time event and then if it is a hit increase it.
-
Feb 04, 2008 | 11:32 amYes by all means if the higher-ups want to hold a private Odyssey Reunion that would be very cool and I would love to come but if not then everybody could just meet up at Clockwork Orange 80's at The Ruby (formerly Seven Seas) any Friday night and either Phoenix or I can go up to the DJ and get a list of requests played since they play 80's music all night I'm sure they would do it for us. Then it would only be $10 per person and we could all wear Odyssey tshirts or something to distinguish us from the crowd because if you go in what you wore to Odyssey you will blend in with the crowd and be too hard to find because they get 1,000 people through the door there a night easy and everybody there dresses either emo, goth or retro 80's
http://www.evilclubempire.com
But if they want to rent out or buy a place and everything of course that would be fantastic.

Feb 04, 2008 | 10:15 amooops!.. i got so excited i forgot to include the link. :P

Feb 04, 2008 | 10:09 amHi karen - I'll check out the building at 836 North Highland this week and post whatever i find out
-
Feb 04, 2008 | 2:58 amExcyse me they had the towers installed in 1986
-
Feb 04, 2008 | 2:56 amI am not sure if David R has the lights that come down from the celling (towers) I know a club in Montclair California has two of the four i helped them install them, they had to cut them shorter that was back in 1990
-
Feb 03, 2008 | 7:45 pmHey Kids, Mark Randall here. And I have a couple more thoughts about this Odyssey reunion... I understand where Greg and Phoenix were coming from with their idea of people meeting up some night at a pre-existing club like Clockwork Orange and calling it our reunion, but where does that leave Chuck E Starr, David Rubinstein and Chris Cox? THEY were the driving force behind the magic we all remember back then and I think it would totally suck to do it without them. Especially since all three of them already expressed an interest in teaming up again to do it.
But I think the Clockwork Orange idea is an awesome back up plan if no one steps up to the plate and starts organizing this thing soon. The first thing we should be putting together should be a panel, or group of people to officially be in charge of getting things together. It should be Chuck, David and Chris, and then a few of us.
...And that's my two cents.
-
Feb 03, 2008 | 5:23 pmOh btw, I keep wondering if all the pictures and videos that were taken at all the Odyssey party events are still around anywhere. They would bring back such wonderful memories of all the people we know and used to know. If anyone has any it would be cool to post them.

Feb 03, 2008 | 5:01 pmHey David - there is no lighting system on planet earth that could come close to what you guys had at the Odyssey! I can close my eyes now and still visualize every nuance of that club :) I swear that if I ever win the lottery I will build an exact duplicate! I think I can speak for most of us on here that the Odyssey was a shrine!

Feb 03, 2008 | 11:24 amYes I know of DeathGuild my friend who is coming down here to visit was there last weekend it looks pretty good.
I've been to goth/industrial clubs in LA, Denver, Arizona and Philadelphia and even did my own in Denver and the thing I love about Goth clubs is no matter where you go the music and the clothes are the same so you can blend right in :)
How you felt going back was how I felt getting back into it EXCITED and although some people say we're too old I don't think so I see people from 21 to 60 in there. We even had one girl Chelsea that is a gorgeous raven haired goth hottie like right out of Suicide Girls Modelling or the cover of the Damned's Phantasmagoria album and I carded her at Colorado Dark Arts Festival when I worked the door and she was 60 but you would never know it and if I had the chance and she was down with it would I be with her? Oh hell yes in a heartbeat, I'd be all over her like a fat kid on a cupcake! lol
Bottom line is I'm too black and too strong to let anyone keep me from doing what I like to do. I'm going to dance to the end!
-
Feb 03, 2008 | 11:05 amJulie(Phoenix) I just looked at the Sinergy flyer for Thursday I got last night at Bar Sinister and it says Fetish Jade (you) are performing there so I will see you Thursday with my friend from San Francisco. When it says performing are you doing electric play, rope bondage or something else?
-
Feb 03, 2008 | 10:49 amKaren the people at the clubs now still look good just like all you girls looked really good back in the day, it's just a different look. You and Stacy and Christy and Allison and Julie (Phoenix) were on top of your game with the whole Cleopatra cut hair look and now the look is more gothabilly Bettie Paige pinup girl. If you got back into the current goth/industrial club scene (which is the closest scene to what Odyssey was) I am sure anyone of you could still pull off the new look, Julie (Phoenix) does it very very very well as a matter of fact.
Dave teases me for still being into the scene but I guess I truly love the music so much I never got out and always stayed in it just like Julie (Phoenix) says we never left.
So get back into it the clubs today are great fun, it's just like sex, Odyssey was my first club so it will always have a special place in my heart but the clubs today are still fun too! :)
I'll bet Phoenix could give you a current club look in one day, she took me from GQ to New Romantic in one day in 1980. All you need is the haircut, the clothes and the makeup, get you a couple Wolfsheim, VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, Combichrist, And One and De/Vision CD's and bam instant gothabilly hottie at the clubs!
Give it a try

Feb 03, 2008 | 10:34 amlisa lebon is the girl in the photo with tim. she was very sweet and a lot of fun... her, lisa ant and myself lived in buena park and would hang out at lisa ant's house. one night the 3 of us were in lisa ant's bed with this guy that i liked named austin. at that point i hadn't yet made any moves on him. it didn't take long before lisa lebon beat me to it. before i knew it, she was under the covers giving him head. lol
-
Feb 03, 2008 | 10:30 amok cool I'll go to HELL Wednesday, I have a girlfriend coming down from San Francisco to see PERVERSION Thursday but then last night at BAR SINISTER we got a flyer for this SYNERGY thing happening on Thursday that also looks pretty good. Feb 03, 2008 | 12:59 amHey Odysseyiarians,
Just got home, went dancing with my good friend Gennipher in Hollywood at Bar Sinister and I have to say after two decades you know what has changed? Nothing, not one thing as a matter of fact they played lots of Depeche Mode, lots, counted eight Depeche Mode songs through the course of one evening................ alright they spun some of the newer stuff..................some Wolfsheim, some Rob Zombie, Nitzer Ebb, but my point is you could literally take any one of us (literally) and drop us off at the entrance to the club and we would fit right in have a good time and make it home alive and fun. It's almost ingrained, as I was dancing I looked around at the other people on the dance floor and thought what lucky people are we to have been there when it all started and twenty years later so little has changed. My friend grabbed me tonight because she knew I love "Sparrows and Nightengales" by Wolfsheim and I was dancing to the same song in Hollywood in 2000 yet it still fills the dance floor today and when I describe Wolfsheim and VNV Nation to my friends who went to Odyssey all I really have to say is it's like Depeche Mode on steroids with today's technology and synthesizers and they understand almost immediately.
We are very lucky people to have been where we were at the start of the revolution in music. There was so much creativity happening in such a small amount of time; Punk, New Romantic, Rockabilly, Mod, Ska, and we got the freedom to choose what we identified with. Now today the music choices are rap/hip hop, Trance/techno, goth/industrial and metal and that's about it. You could show me ten people back in the day and I could tell you which group they belonged to but now you almost have to ask somebody whether they are death metal or goth/industrial.
We are very lucky people to have been part of what I think was the most creative time in music since The Beatles.
I'll be driving in the car with my kids listening to KROQ and my daughters will say "put in your music daddy we like it better" and I push a mix casette tape in I made before they were born of This Mortal Coil, Cabaret Voltaire, Depeche Mode, and I watch them in the back seat from the rear view mirror and they know all the words! And I feel so proud, and it's all because in 1980 my friends and I watched the movie "American Gigolo" and one of them said "I know where that club was they put in the movie" and one hour later we were at Odyssey and I walked in and heard old Ministry, Softcell, saw guys wearing eyeliner, Met Julie (Phoenix) and I was hooked. Never had I seen people so creative before. Some people here mentioned Death Todd and I remember he used to show up in outfits like a gladiator outfit that would still turn heads to this day at the goth/industrial clubs that are going on right now. We were there at the pinnacle of the most creative time in music in decades my friends and for that we are very lucky people :)

Feb 02, 2008 | 3:05 amPHOANIX-I'm sure we crossed paths back then but i mostly hung out at the coocoo's nest and the Galixie-my gf went out with Todd from TSOL and me n him faught all the time but i was still back stage every gig and told him to play code blue over n over lol. I ran with the leage and Dirt Hill we would only go to HB to kick the skins asses when we were bored or chase the mods in Balboa, that was if we couldn't find some prepie party's to bash. do you remember when Black Flag would only play in backyards in Orange? those were the days. Feb 02, 2008 | 2:37 amHi HI,
Great to read so many postings!
I though I had posted the other day but I dont see it.
LOL
Hi Karen, Yes Robbie would be still handsome and tall ..I am sure he is still an amazing dancer as I always loved the way he danced.
Robbie =Robert Harper welcome back!
xx
Hey Robert,
Can you should see if you cant get the copy of Music Asylum transfered onto DVD for the Reunion?
That way everyone could see it and also remember those who are no longer with us. And Music Asylum has Alex's Sex Dwarf performance and so many others.
I would love to see it myself!
HAHA Secret, why would you say that was
you in the background of Ale's Music Asylum photo?? LOL
and then I find a close up shot of you with your hat and Blue hair and you say its not you.. it so you! Are you just trying to wind people up.
Great to see everyone posting here and your photos. Robbie I found Larissa! I will be calling her this week-end.
I laughed so much at La toilet one!

Feb 01, 2008 | 9:27 pmHere is me going to Odyssey circa 1984, it was taken the day I was put in the movie "Moving Violations" by a casting director (Sue Quinn) I met at Odyssey:
<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/030.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

This is me and Dave just after Odyssey closed we were still going dancing from 1984 to present at these clubs in this order: Gino's II, Seven Seas, The Apartment, Vasilon, Aerial, DOK West, Into The Mystic, Alice In Wonderland, Helter Skelter, (took a few years off here to get married and have children) then Mannequinn, Release The Bats, Clockwork Orange, Perversion, Sabbat, Dungeon, Bar Sinister, (took a few years off here to follow my daughters to Colorado Springs, went to clubs The Church, The Underground, Rock Island, The Shelter, and ran my own fetish/goth/industrial club Eroxa in Denver) Got custody of my daughters six months ago and moved back home here to Orange County:
<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/836066339_l.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/1028006556_l.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

Here is me at my Odyssey reunion birthday party circa 1994 with (from left to right) Margie, Raquel and Christy Tai:
<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/023-1.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/3.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

Here is me at present 2008:
<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/8b33.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

<img src="http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg292/roxymuzick/34e0.jpg" alt="Photobucket">

Julie(Phoenix) is right and I've been telling everybody we can have the reunion at club Clockwork Orange on 80's night any Friday night at The Ruby for a $10 per person cover in Hollywood http://www.evilclubempire.com
Wrist bands though are too hard to see in a dimly lit club and if people have their hands at their sides it will appear like we are staring at their crotch area LOL I would say we all go have our own Odyssey t-shirts made up with the Odyssey logo and agree on a Friday night to all meet at Clockwork Orange believe me when I tell you they still play all the music from Odyssey there every Friday night because they really do.
Now about music, Rik is right the song Karen is thinking of is Let Me Go by Heaven 17 who have also been to Odyssey
Julie(Phoenix) Everybody is correct in that the song "Arabian Nights" is by Siouxsie and she is singing in a female voice however Stormwitch, Sarah Brightman, d*** Weissman, Beck, and last but not least FALCO have all recorded Arabian Nights songs. Now since we are talking about a male voice from Odyssey I am going to go with the FALCO song "Nothin Sweeter Than Arabia" and here are your lyrics:
Yah,
Yah,
Yahlah,
They say there is religion
There is a kind of taste
Get me the celebration
And I will give you the waste
There will be no danger
No trouble at all
We need a stand-up together
Those curtains are not to fall
Arabian nights
Arabian nights
There's no way out for me
This dream will
capture me for years
Yellow night light
In a city of white
I'm stranded in the desert
I'm stranded in a fight
Arabian nights
Arabian
Arabian nights
There's no way out for me
This dream will
capture me for years
Yellow night light
In a city of white
I'm stranded in the desert
I'm stranded in a fight
There's no one here who's
Gonna safe you [ should
probably be "save" ]
There's nothin'
sweeter than Arabia
There's no way out for me
This dream will

Feb 01, 2008 | 4:31 pmTHE NIGHT I MET CHUCK E STARR
At this point in time I had been going to the Odyssey off and on for a while but not yet on a regular basis. I didn’t know that many people and had only once been very briefly introduced to Chuck by Summer and Star. Those of you who know me may find what I am about to tell you difficult to believe but once upon a time I had actually been a painfully shy, innocent and sheltered young teen (it’s true, damn it). Nothing at all like the unshockable, wisecracking, sarcastic motherf*@ker I would soon become. I hadn’t really figured out who I was yet or come to terms with my sexuality or developed ANY self confidence at all. So there I was one night, dancing by myself and hoping that someone I knew would show up. I was starting to get sleepy and I thought that dancing to something fast and really upbeat might wake me up. Since it was a weeknight (but not New Wave night) and disco was being played, I got the idea to request a certain song by the Pointer Sisters that had just come out.
There were already a few kids visiting Chuck in the booth so I waited for them to go away. When I noticed that he was alone I got up my courage and made my move. I remember how self-conscious I felt just stepping up onto the podium that first time, I was totally intimidated, like the Cowardly Lion as he approached “the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz”, LOL! Anyway, I made my way up the steps to the DJ booth and then hovered conspicuously in the doorway, just waiting for him to notice me. He was busy dancing around, having fun, and getting ready to spin the next tune. I waited there for what seemed like an eternity until eventually he was unable to ignore my insecure hovering any longer. He just stopped, turned to glare at me and then yelled “WHAT?!” I asked if he took requests and he said, “Depends. What do you want to hear?” and I said, “I’m So Excited”.
Well, he just stared at me for a beat, then he walked right up and grabbed me by the crotch! After giving me a quick feel, he looked me right in the eye, raised his eyebrow and said, “You’re NOT that excited”.
LOL, ...Classic!
Of course if something like that happened today I would probably laugh my a** off and just grab him back, but at the time I was MORTIFIED! I turned white as a sheet and I just remember slowly backing out of the booth and mumbling something apologetic. OMG, What a dork! Anyway, I think he must have felt sorry for me though, cuz sure enough, a few songs later he played it! LOL, God bless him.

Wow lots of things are moving with this reunion. I really Hope someone can find Dori and Mikey before this goes down. Does anyone remember Erik Russell and Daryl from Manhattan Beach. Karen you might, as Stacy Myers dated Daryl for a while. They were Rockabilly cats. Well funny story here, I was flying out of JFK on my way back to LA Tuesday night and who was serving business class but Eric Russell. Now that was a shock. I hope you guys are coming along well with the reunion. Seems like there is great interest. MARK RANDALL YOU ROCK! Hope

Jan 31, 2008 | 8:48 pmIf you were facing the front door.... the right side of the dance floor was the "cool" side and the left side was made up of surfer/prep types.... My sister was on the left and I was on the right....LOL
About the reunion, why don't we just all go to some 80's dance club that is already happening. We could all wear some distinguishing wristband or something....
Does anyone remember a song that said "nights of arabia" in it? That song has haunted me for years and I have no club who did it...
Robbie.... you mean the one I walked in on a leash one night and he liked to get up on the podium and dance to sex dwarf just like alex? I have a story about him.....
Does anyone remember that guy who looked really goth...sort of like the cure...and it was rumored that he liked to have necro fun at cemetaries?
My sister and i used to sneak in cans of old english 800... yuck

Jan 31, 2008 | 7:18 amWow. Those photos blow my mind Kelly. I remember breaking for lunch when we were shooting. We went accross the street to the graveyard and ate on the graves. We thought we were so "evil". I worked on a charity event there last Haloween for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. It brought back so many memories. I have lost touch with most everyone from those days except for Liza Barry. We have been roommates (on and off). I sent her a link to this post. I ran into Cooter about six monthes ago. I talk to Pattie Cortizar and Kelli Lovelace once in a while (actually not in a few years). The girl next to me in the group pix from Music Asylum is Lisa Marcinco, we used to dance in contests together.
I will try to think of others that I have contact with.

Jan 30, 2008 | 3:31 pmYes actually I went out with Karen Gandi (irvine) for a little while and Kim Kew (mod) then Alan Augusta went out with Kim Kew and that was the last I saw of them. I have to ask Dave who Shannon Wright is because that name sounds so familiar. This is like the closest picture I have to me back then in digital format because I have to scan my hardcopy photos into the computer:
I'm the guy in the middle the other guys are Dave Gilbert and Mark Delprete
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2132/1494946730_48f9699bee_m.jpg
And this picture was me from back in Odyssey days but my bangs are slicked back and I'm on the toilet (don't ask, I was living at Dave's mom's house and I guess it's just friggin hilarious to him, he might be a fecalpheliac)

Jan 28, 2008 | 6:09 pmI agree with mark randall somewhat, but thinking on a on a little more positive level, what happened with the ODYSSEY 1 the first time around?started with a hundred or so people on a sat night and grew into hundreds of people thru the doors 7 nights a week,(payingpeople)Most...The club was a success and known as one of l.a hottest nightspots throughout the world, and frequented by major celebs groovn with a 1000 others on any giving weekend.Gay,Drag queens,Trannys,Fetishrs, hustlers, and all mixes all got along and created a vibe that other l.a clubs lacked, there's no reason why this can't happen again 25 years later instead of Sr elton john, diana ross, rod stewert, mickjagger, gracejones, lionel richie, steven tyler, comming to ODYSSEY II,which im sure would come again//This time around would be their kids wanting to ck out the club their parents went to 25 yrs ago,Liv tyler, nicole richie, paris,A one off can be a success as could a weekly,im meeting with chris thurs for lunch and will update, with david chris myself karen chuckie and everyone else on board, success is all i see..POSITIVITY.....Is the word for today and every other day...More later ,o and chuckie dont think palm springs will work,WHy? and more later..

Jan 28, 2008 | 5:41 pmSmall world, I remember Karen Gandi very well we dated for a bit except she had burgundy hair and green eyes and she was really tiny like five feet tall, I don't remember Julie wearing boas but back then you couldn't miss her she had bleached white hair Cleopatra cut. Julie and her little sister were both always beautiful, really beautiful and still are judging from her current pictures on myspace. I met her the first night I went to Odyssey and then we started all going together for awhile until she stopped going. After Julie stopped going I met Christy Tai and hung around with her and Stacy Myers then I met Karen Gandi from Irvine, at that time our Orange County group grew to Karen Livanovich, Karen Gandi, Alan Augusta, me, Marc Delprete, Brian Dickerson, Amy Skeldon, Randy Burke, Cyndie and Dave Gilbert. Most everybody else we knew going to Odyssey was from LA, the valley or Redondo Beach area. Not sure where Karen Gandi is anymore but this is Julie (Phoenix) it's such a trip that so many years later her and I still run in the same circles and go to the same clubs in LA I bet I have probably passed right by her and didn't know it was her. I used to hang around with a Marc at Odyssey but it was Marc Delprete. I'll have to get my act together and get a picture from back then scanned in and uploaded. When I first started going I wore lots of eyeliner (of course) then as the years rolled on I went through lots of different hair and clothing styles but stayed fairly stuck on long bleached white bangs down to my chin, a bolero jacket, eyeliner and motorcyle cop looking boots, people said I looked Equestrian. Phoenix messaged me on myspace and wants to be kept in the loop on an Odyssey reunion. If you have a myspace add her and if you don't have a myspace get one it's so easy my daughters are 9 and 11 and they each made their own myspace.
Love and Rockets,
Greg Masley

-
Jan 28, 2008 | 4:41 amYes, we went to Odyssey a lot together actually. Your little sister and her older boyfriend used to come with us, he kind of looked like a surfer dude but would just throw some gel in his hair and mess it up. We also got pulled over by the cops for being out past curfew lol
good times!

Jan 27, 2008 | 7:52 pmI’m certainly no expert, but it seems to me that an actual reunion of the original Odyssey crowd would be much easier to pull off successfully if done on a smaller, more casual level. While I think that an Odyssey reunion is possible, how many of us would actually be able to attend? A hundred or so? The more extravagant and complicated it becomes, the less likely it is that the original crowd of people would actually be able to make it. Many of the old gang now have families to support, or live outside of LA, etc. And as for the handful of die hard fans that have been posting here, you KNOW what a pain in the butt we can be... “What do you mean, I’m not on the list?!” It might be less risky to make it a more intimate get together where there wasn’t a lot on the line financially.
Another option (if something more spectacular was desired) might be for you guys to just go for it and open a NEW club, maybe call it “The ODYSSEY” and do it as a special event once a month or something like that. A retro dance place that featured all 80’s music, sort of like what Billy Limbo did in the late 80’s/early 90’s with his super popular club “1970’s”. That way you could do a lot of advertising and attract a much larger paying crowd in addition to just us reunion types. Of course, we’d all have to accept the fact that the majority of people there would be a bunch of kids who probably never even heard of the original Odyssey, especially if this was done as an 18 and over club. But at least you’d get a big crowd!
As for a venue, the one place I can think of that comes closest to the Odyssey in terms of size and layout would be that space at 836 North Highland. I haven’t been there in at least 10 years though so I have no idea if it even still exists.

Jan 26, 2008 | 6:51 pmOMG! This Evening at 2130 I was woken up by a phone call from Chris Cox. He is all for this reunion so I was thinking how about a weekend get-a-way with sponsering hotels and have it in Palm Springs?? We have a bar that will hold around 1800 people. The place has after hours and is almost the size of the dance hall part of the "O". This will take a bit of money for advertising but I think I can swing that. We need to put together a group of you guys and all meet to discuss this. Another place would be the Hollywood Paladium but it is VERY costly. Well let's do it! Email me chuckestarr@yahoo.com or call me @ 760-329-8329 I work almost everynight an an RN. So if I don't answer leave a message. Thanks Chuck e Starr:)

I thought it might be Adam.. but couldnt recall for sure. You know the little gray cells arent what they use to be.
LOL
I hope these photos help you all.
Yes the shot of ALex is precious!
He was precious!
I really enjoyed my times at the Odyssey. Sure does bring back loads of memories seeing some of you on myspace and reading the post here.
I would come into the club with Robbie,Karen M, and loads of the cool peeps on Music Asylum, and all those fun A&R guys from the labels. That would drop off the latest 12" to the DJ there or bring in a band .
Most were very good mates of mine for I worked in the Music Biz for 22 years.
Aww warms the heart doesnt it, recalling good memories.
-
Jan 23, 2008 | 12:59 amKelly - I can see your photo's fine, maybe there was just a delay in putting them up. I never had any pictures of my old pal Alex so it was really cool to see the "Sex Dwarf" photo you posted. Oh yeah, and the guy holding the #14 card is Adam Christopher (see earlier posts).
I remember hearing something about Music Asylum but I think it was before my time. It's amusing now to see all those images of elaborately costumed young kids and remember how serious it all seemed at the time. The importance of deciding whether or not to wear a headband. I admit to pondering that very question myself, and on more than one occasion. Too freakin' funny!
Hey Tom, glad to see someone else remembers Danny the bartender, he was a nice guy. Your name just reminded me of someone else that worked there. Tom the Security Guard! Anyone remember him? What a character! He was older than most of us at the time (probably late 20's or early 30's), "straight", recently divorced and new to LA. He was on the short side, had dark curly hair (Greg Brady style) and wore a flashy gold chain around his neck. He smoked a lot and was always trying to pick up on all the younger looking New Wave girls, most of whom weren't the least bit interested in him. I remember Holly playfully flirting with him once and spending the rest of the night fending off his advances. Despite his claims of heterosexuality, he was always acting flirty and grabbing our asses. He was sort of a "Goombah" who knew nothing of New Wave and looked totally out of place. So of course, I had a huge crush on him, LOL.
-
Jan 22, 2008 | 6:43 pmThese memories are WOW and YIKES and SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! I went to Odyssey mainly from 78 to 80, so, many of the recollections here are after my time, but I'm still loving them. When I went there a few times in the 80's, the building was the same but the music had changed - disco was dead - long live disco. I strongly recall Danny the bartender, who would use his finger to signl his name in the condensation that formed inside the upstairs windows. The summer of 79 had us all dancing to "We Are Family," one of the few songs they'd play more than once a night. And the midnight tradition of "Time Warp." Ahhh. Spencer B. and Karen S., Michael O. (!), Leslie, Keith K. and so many other friends and aquaintances who will live forever in my memories.
P.S. The disco down the street was named Osko's.

Jan 20, 2008 | 2:09 pmSpark, I remember skin Sherry very well, we were pretty good pals for a couple of years. We would also go to punk shows back in the day, and the Odyssey. I know she was modeling for a bit. But I don't know where she can be found. I really hope she is well I know she was going through some hard times.

Jan 18, 2008 | 6:01 pmDoes anyone remember a bartender named Phillip? I hooked up with him one night in November 1980. He was a super nice guy that I really like. I've always been sorry I didn't keep in touch with him. He was 22 at the time. Phillip if you're out there, or if anyone knows how to get hold of him, please email me.

Jan 18, 2008 | 2:02 amHello all,
I went to the Odyssey when I was 17 & 18 (1977/78) and had a blast! My friends and I used to drive up from O.C. and go out to eat after. There was a coffee shop right on the corner of La Cienega and Beverly. I don't remember the name. I used to dance the night away with my gay friends (I am straight, but was quite the f** hag back then). I remember "I feel love" being played. Quaaludes were the thing back then and someone told me if I took one with warm water, it would start working faster. So I actually asked the bartender for a glass of warm water. What a ditz!
Does anyone remember the disco down the street? I was at Odyssey the night they were filming "Thank God it's Friday" in that other disco. We heard Donna Summer was there, but for some reason, didn't run right over. Too much fun at the Odyssey, I guess. :-)
My friends were Michael Ferrell, Mark Drake, David Ellis and Matt Freeman (one of his friends was LeAnn). Michael lives in Minnesota now, Mark & David are in Heaven and I wish I could find Matt.
Oh, someone mentioned DOK West in Garden Grove... I used to work there. I was the DJ in 1981 and 1985. And my friend Mark was the doorman.

Jan 14, 2008 | 12:51 pmmost of you that are on this board i don't know. at least by name anyway. although i do remember quite a few names that are being mentioned. there were so many people to come in and out of my life during those odyssey years (1980-84). does anyone remember sherry? she always had short bleached out or fushia hair and wore 50's-60's dresses with a petticoat and combat boots. she was really beautiful and a great dancer.
mark randall, i must know you! karen j was never at odyssey without me. do you remember her friends mark and jason from buena park? i'm mark. i was the one that was/is really into siouxsie. there are pics (old and new) on my myspace. you have to be a member to view the galleries but it's free and easy to do and can become quite addicting once you get the hang of it. believe me, i was very reluctant about joining also, but now i love it. it's a great way to stay in touch with old friends and make some new ones. :)

Jan 10, 2008 | 1:29 pmMark Mark Mark Mark Mark...
Okay this is getting confusing. This is Mark RANDALL speaking to Karen. The Karen that I don't know. Do me a favor and go back to calling my friend Mark (the one that you DO know) by his screen name: "Secret". Why? A) It'll make things a lot simpler. B) That's what he wants to be called. and C) I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to tell anyone his real name! Oops! (and no, I have no idea why not).
I know what you're thinking, "Well obviously he's gonna know now!" Not necessarily... LOL!
There's a good chance that if we just pretend I didn't tell you he won't even notice. As you may or may not remember, he's pretty but not all that observant! Kidding! ...Sort of. Tee hee.
Speaking of nicknames, Hope - When you say "Meg" are you talking about Maigus who I mentioned in my last post or someone else? PS: I've been checking my Email inbox...

Jan 10, 2008 | 11:13 amHi Everyone,
Nice to find this site and see so many of you here. Many of you may remember me from the early 80's.
I casted a whole bunch of you for the TV show "Music Asylum"(pre MTV).
I still have some of your photos too from from the casting call and some photos from the filming of the show too.
Speaking of Robbie Harper..where is he?
Where is Karen Moulette (maiden name).
My life has led me to much traveling and living abroad and I lost touch with Robbie and Karen. If anyone knows where Robbie and Karen are, please let me know.
Last I saw Robbie Harper is when we all were living in NYC (during our Club Kids days) and I handed him my only copy of "Music Asylum". And said " Look after that for me Robbie."
Life took me to London shortly after that and fast forward all these years later , Im now in Boston.
I will scan these photos and open and account on photobucket page over the next week for you all to have a look see.
It's a blast from the past so get ready.
Best of luck on the reunion. I have so many fond memories of the Odyssey.I use to come to the club often with David Jurman too from Epic,Arista Records, Robbie and Larissa etc.
David and I are still in touch and he use to supply the DJ's with some fine tunes and bring in the Brits bands too. David is now in NJ. We spoke the other night.
Stay well!

Jan 10, 2008 | 1:47 amThat is such a sad tale about Jeff. He was brilliant! I remember he was so together and kind. I would hang out with him from time to time. However I do remember running into the twins from Redondo Bob and John Smith on a break from college one year and John told me Jeff went to jail for shady business investments. Does anyone know where the twins are? and where is Meg? Meg must be about 49 now I adored him he was fun.

Jan 09, 2008 | 3:57 pmHope - I can't drop you a line because... because... because I'm not on MySpace, believe it or not! LOL. I have purposely avoided it for years and I'm pretty sure that by now I am one of the last remaining humans yet to be absorbed into the collective. I know, "resistance is futile" but I'm gonna try and hold out for as long as I can, damn it!
However, if you Email me at MarkRandallCasting@hotmail.com, I promise that I will write back. Just be sure to write your name in the subject line so that I'm certain to open it (I get a ton of unsolicited mail because of my work). Also, remind me to tell you about the time Fat Pat called and woke me up one morning to warn me about the criminal sleeping in bed next to me. Good times! LOL
-
Jan 09, 2008 | 1:41 pmStar, now that is a good one. Great dancer and always nice. I really want to know what the hell became of Fat Pat, he was so great and he also knew Meg really well. Meg was the first gay man I made out with lol. Mark R. I do remember you and you were cool and I remember we had fun time there together. I was on MDMA and coke all the time back in those days. I was always dressed in very mod clothing, I was all about shopping at cowboys and poodles and flip, and looked like I came straight off of the streets of London in 1966. Those were such great carefree times. Does anyone remember Jeff from Manhattan. He went but JW,INC. He drove a trans am and that name was also on his plates. I would love to find him. I am also looking for Jon O'Brien from Van Nuys and Mikey and Dori. They are very old school O.
I am on myspace under Hopey Kaplan. Mark R. drop me a line.
-
Jan 09, 2008 | 5:14 amThis was the coolest place on earth.I remember it having magical qualities and the music was the best. They were the only club who would play Visage and Japan. Because there were so many gay men and transvestites, picking up beautiful girls was a snap. If anybody remembers me, please shoot me an email.

Jan 08, 2008 | 11:23 pmIt’s funny all the different cliques there were at the Odyssey. Some of us that were regulars knew each other and some of us didn’t, yet even if we didn’t know each other back then, it seems as though we all had friends in common. For instance, Karen - you asked “which Mark am I?” The best answer I can give you is to read through my posts and if none of it sounds familiar, we probably didn’t know each other. In my Odyssey days I lived in Glendale, then Studio City and eventually Hollywood (I didn’t know many of the Orange County crowd). When I first started going there I hung out a lot with a couple of street kids from Oki Dog that were awesome dancers named Summer and Star (probably the same Star you mentioned). Summer was named after Donna Summer and whenever he/she walked into the club, Chuck would be sure and play either ‘Bad Girls” or “Love is in Control”. Summer would dance and lip synch on the podium with Star lip synching back up vocals. I dated the bartender Randy from Palmdale, was friends with one of the other bartenders there whose name was Danny, and I hung out a lot with Karen Jacobson, but I suppose the easiest way to identify me would be to say that I was usually there with Adam Christopher. Odds are that if Adam was at the Odyssey, he was there with either myself or his gal pal Sandra (a hairstylist from Whittier).
I honestly don’t think that we did know each other back then Karen, but we sure had a lot of friends in common! I TOTALLY knew your friend Holly (that took Adam to the prom and yes, I’ve seen the photo you mentioned) She was such a little cutie. I remember that no matter where I was or what I was doing at the Odyssey, whenever the Nina Hagen song “Born in Xixax” came on, Holly would grab me by the arm and we’d run like hell for the dance floor - as if it were the most important thing in the world! LOL - God, I love that. BTW: The person who has been posting under the name Secret is also a friend of mine that you know, and believe it or not HIS name is Mark also.
I’m pretty sure that I remember both Hope Kaplan and Spark, but it would be so much easier if I could see how you guys looked back then. Spark - I’m almost positive that you were there the night of my birthday when Karen J. arranged for me to drop acid for the first time along with a small group of friends. Did you used to have jet black hair and did you usually wear black pants with a black dress shirt that was buttoned all the way up? If so, I think it might have been you that we got the acid from! I remember laughing and laughing for so long that my face started to ache, wondering what to expect and then suddenly noticing that the exit sign above one of the doors was expanding and contracting and that certain colors were glowing as bright as neon. I remember latching onto one of Karen’s friends and both of us tripping so hard that we didn’t let go of each others hands all night. We just wandered around all night long laughing and laughing. I can’t remember his name but he was short and thin and he had sort of an elfin quality. No, not Maigus (God, does anyone remember Maigus?). Actually, he looked exactly like that elf from the animated Christmas special that wanted to be a dentist. LOL. I’m not kidding. Anyway, afterwards we all went to The Greenery (still tripping), ordered one french onion soup, put it in the center of the table and watched it breath until they kicked us out.
On another occasion I remember sitting with Karen J. and a couple other people (probably you, Spark) on a very slow night at the O and reading in Frontiers magazine about a strange new disease to beware of. It was a kind of gay cancer called AIDS and the article said that experts were predicting it might take as long as five years before they had a cure. And then all of us bitching, “FIVE YEARS?!!!”

Jan 04, 2008 | 10:37 pmsorry, not the same sparky.. although i did live in laguna beach at one time but way after odyssey.
-
Jan 04, 2008 | 8:14 pmif ur little sparky from laguna than it is you i'm saying hi to-greg said you are the same sparky and if so, you had stayed at my place in OC b4. That place cat house was the last place i saw alex but i think they were calling it ICE at that time-me and him danced with each other the whole night as for it was pretty much a straight club lol but i am able to keep a fond memorey of him that i did get a last dance with him last we saw of each other and yes i would grab that fine a** of his until he made me take my hands off it he he. (LB)Jeff was bartending in a club in OC had a buetiful daughter by a girl name berry that use to go to the O. who knows he might still be there, i will drive by and ask the owners if they have kept in contact with him. Which Mark r u since i knew a few? Should we let Doug-LB's killer know about this lmao, Paul isn't even letting him know that we are still in contact, i guess i was next that night so no other man could have me, thank god i was trippen so hard on acid that i thru my gf Holli into him and ran. Adam Christopher will remember holli as she took him to our high school prom-he even looked so fine in a tux-that is a pic that i have that not many have seen that side of adam. Is Erica still around. Greg try n find niomee, she can contact danette since i want nothing to do with her but D still talks to alot of people.
-
Jan 04, 2008 | 7:11 pmmark, i must know you if you were friends with karen jacobson.
i've been trying to find her for YEARS. she and i were really good friends. she used to go to the rainbow ALL the fricken time until i brought her to odyssey. i don't think she ever stepped foot in the rainbow again after that.. and she dumped her boyfriend roger. we (jason and i) also got her to take her first hit of acid. she was really reluctant at first and only took half. about an hour later she was dancing around the bedroom to adam and the ants asking for the other the half. LOL!
we used to go to odyssey together just about every night in her blue gremlin. LOL! last i heard (late 80's) she was working on a cruise ship as a dealer in dutch harbor alaska.
-
Jan 04, 2008 | 6:59 pmunfortunately it is true about alex. lisa ant was good friends with him and she would call and give me updates on his health. like i said, it was either late 80's or very early 90's. i moved to sf in '92 and i know it was before that. it's been so long now that i've kinda lost track of exactly when it was. i can recall so clearly every time soft cell would come on, alex would be right up there on the go-go stand lip syncing to it. lol!
karen, not sure you were saying hi to me or the other sparky, but hello. :)
-
Jan 04, 2008 | 6:57 pmRe: Where are they now?
Unfortunately it's true. Alex died in 1990 of AIDS. After the Odyssey burned down, he and I lost track of each other for a few years until we ran into each other at Billy Limbo's GROUND ZERO (best underground club EVER!). We were both really into the alternative music scene and started hanging out a lot after that, dancing our asses off to Jane's Addiction at CATHOUSE, HOT LAVA (another Billy club) and BORDELLO (Thursday nights at Peanuts). He started getting sick in late 89 and moved out of LA to live with family. We wrote letters after that and when I hadn't heard from him for a while I called his mom and she told me that he had died. Very sad. He was a genuinely sweet guy and always so upbeat and fun. I miss him a lot.
As for Adam Christopher, he and I were roommates for many years until we finally drove each other crazy (LOL). I still adore him even though we don't keep in touch as often as we should. He lives in North Hollywood and is a successful make up artist. FYI: He is Kathy Griffin's favorite make up guy and if you look closely you can catch glimpses of him every now and then on her show, "My Life on the D List".
Does anyone know what Karen Jacobson is up to today? She was the first person I came out to. We used to have so much fun. A real sweetheart.
Anyone remember Georgina? She was tall, thin, and had short hair. Even though she was probably the same age as most of us, she always seemed so sophisticated to me, LOL.
What about Randy Casper? He was the tall, hunky bartender that usually worked the downstairs bar closest to the patio. He and I had a thing for a while until he quit the O and moved back home to Palmdale.

Jan 04, 2008 | 5:47 pmwhat about ricky scarey and the pleasure boyz-jason,nat,andy,dino etc..I sent for my albums so i should have alot of pics in there plus see what ally has. You back greg? analisa's going to trip when i tell her about this sight. Greg if you plan on going to that club in hollywierd, i'll go with as long as f** isn't going with us so i can see if that is bruce.

Jan 04, 2008 | 12:21 pmwow!.. what a trip it is to be reading these memories knowing that there are still odyssey peeps out there. i remember so many of them. soft cell alex (brier). last i heard he past away from aids in the late 80's or early 90's. anyone remember lisa ant, lisa lebon? lisa ant was a good friend of alex's (and mine). i remember seeing soft cell at the hollywood palladium (1983) with karen (steve perry) jacobson and alex got on stage and open mouthed kissed marc almond while he was singing! lol.
hmm.. what/who else? robbie harper, larissa collins (her mom was the manager of the kinks) christy betts, lisa willouby, venus.. so many names and faces over the years. many of us were from orange co and would drive to hollywood almost every night of the week. either we'd have a pass to get in or would bum one from somebody who had an extra one. god the memories... i still have dreams of that place. does anyone remember mark and jason from buena park? we were ALWAYS together.
there are a few old pics of me on myspace (some of the only few in existence from that time) taken at the lhasa club.

Jan 04, 2008 | 3:41 amI just went to lunch on new years with jaylin and adrienne from Odyssey and my kids and I'm pretty confident we could do a succesful Odyssey Reunion because my Birthday had quite a few people from Odyssey. So please include me in on the info at roxymuzick@yahoo.com or http://www.myspace.com/roxymuzick
As far as venues go Jason Lavitt from Helter Skelter and the guys from Evil Club Empire in Hollywood usually use the Hollywood Athletic Club as an alternative venue when they do special events for their clubs Clockwork Orange and Perversion etc. which now that I think about it might work for a meeting place for us because they still spin the same stuff from Odyssey at their clubs http://www.evilclubempire.com

Dec 21, 2007 | 12:38 pmI worked at the Odyssey my first summer in L.A., 1982. I started on the patio as security. It was my job to push people back over the wall who were trying to climb in from the gas station parking lot. From there I was promoted to the door, where I used to pretty much let in anyone who would give me drugs (or who I wanted to sleep with.) - I was finally busted one night by Scott, who brought me up to the office and counted the 40 or so people I admitted, as we reviewed the security tape.
I became friends with Rob, a cocktail waiter, and we both rode the Odyssey float in the '82 Pride parade. He's still my best friend, and we often reminisce about some of the great characters we encountered: Cherie, Alex, Stephanie, Meg, Peanuts, Mignon. I ran into Cherie years later on the Venice boardwalk and we had a nice lunch.
The Odyssey was a really special place and time in my life and I love meeting people who used to go, and they invariably trip out when I tell them I worked there.
BTW - Does anybody recall these two characters:
Jay Weir, used to run around in teal surgical scrubs and always had a bottle of poppers under his nose; and Robbie Jagger, who used to get really loaded and stumble around, and who, I recall, fell from the upstairs balcony onto the dance floor one night, leaving everyone aghast, but he was uninjured.

Dec 15, 2007 | 12:58 amMark, That was so funny doing that show. I was on for a couple. But my fav was seeing the Three O Clock on there I am not so much a club kid as I was a mod straight out of Carnaby Street. I hung out at the O so very much, but I also went to the Lasa Club and the Bullet. Karen, I think we are talking about two different Pages. The Page I knew I met and was with for a while and lived in Manhattan Beach. We lost Contact and ran into her with Cory, Christy and Stacy in I think 1981. I heard later on the she moved to Hawaii and was stripping at a place called Lolli's. I think I am a but older that you guys I am in my mid 40's now. Karen did you know a girl from the vally that went out with Christy Thi named Niki? and she had a twin brother. I was just thinking about those two.

Dec 14, 2007 | 8:56 pmHope- OMG! I totally forgot about MV3, too funny. Adam did that show a bunch of times. I think Karen had a great idea about listing our favorite wardrobe back in the day...
My favorite pants: Black Panno D'Or's (all those pockets and zippers!)
Favorite Shirts: Anything I bought from the JUDY'S "Gear for Guys" department
...More like "Gear for Gays" LOL. Too funny.
-
Dec 14, 2007 | 5:45 pmi know donovan-but the only people we hung out with in the valley were Hilary Gold,my self and machelle haas and april but they would stay at my house or hilary's and you most be talking about page after Odyssey for page dated Fred that whole time then after him was michele. I believe you were around but i think the names are wrong. My gf Janet AKA holli was doing that MV3 show lol-i was still to young to get in there so me and allison got stuck going to american bandstand cause they didn't card but by this time odyssey was going down hill-doug n jeff were in jail for LB and i started hanging with a girl named Danette which you would find me allison, page and april at the wiskey on fri nights. One of the best memory's would be that me n allison were the 1st and only women ever let on the O float for the gay parade and chuck E havning his flask and getting us messes-up starting early that morning.
Photo below: Scared the crap out of me when I found this in my cupboard...

Dec 14, 2007 | 2:40 pmKaren,
I met Stacy, Christy and Page at the O when they had hung out with another friend named Cory. Later Page had a boyfriend named Andrew who lived in the valley and all of the girls were living there for a while. I lived in Los Angeles proper (Hancock Park), and hung out with Mod Riley, Allison, Ricky Tiki And Randy who's dad owned Trashy Lingerie,Culture Kelly, Donovan Leitch, Nong Adam (Ant), and all of the Mods who would come there, or BH and LA proper kids. And also some really old timers Danny and David who I started going there with in 1980. I also was friends with the two twins for the south bay John and Bob Smith. We danced on MV3 together. I left for NYU in 1983, during that time I lost touch with many as I my professional party ended and get cracking on school. I have been searching for DJ Eddie, Goth Doreen, Jeff (JWINC) and Charlotte. You can find me on myspace.

Dec 14, 2007 | 12:32 pmYes little Sparky the girl from Laguna Beach!!!!!
I had some really good times hanging out with her, she had a house right across PCH from the beach and we would go out clubbing all night then go to the beach with her brother.
Maybe she knows where Brandy, Crystal and that ultra hot Paulina are? That girl looked like Bettie Paige before a lot of people looked like Bettie Paige - Except for Bettie Paige of course! She used to wear a captain's hat and had chinadoll-straight black Cleopatra cut hair I used to get kind of quiet when she was around. Brandy last I heard he was in an OC industrial performance band called DRANCE and they got in the newspaper for going on stage naked covered in white house paint. Crystal - last time I saw her she was living in Long Beach and we went to Odyssey the night Vince got taken to jail for mushrooms.

Dec 13, 2007 | 7:59 pmok cool, I actually went out with Christy Tai back in the day her dad was cool I think his name was Steve and he worked as an engineer at Rockwell I stayed at her place too in Redondo. I think at one point we used to fit four of us in her bed; me, marc, stacy and christy. And we used to go to Mr. Pockets Billiards if we weren't going to Odyssey. I was always getting thrown out of my parent's house for bleaching my hair and wearing eyeliner and then I would call Christy and she would say ok come over we went grocery shopping.
My Odyssey story though started in 1980 we went with a group because my friend Darryl said he knew where the club was in the movie we were watching "American Gigolo" so we went and I remember we got inside and I heard Softcell and saw guys wearing eyeliner and I have never been the same since :) Also that first night I met Phoenix so I had a reason to keep going back whereas my friends did not. Phoenix introduced me to Alex, Adam Christopher, Ricky, Scooter, pretty much all the regulars. Then Phoenix stopped going but I kept going and met Christy Tai and Stacy Myers then Tracy, Allison, Karen. If you knew Page then yes we probably knew each other. Last time I saw Christy she came to my birthday party but I look different now, back then I had bleached out white bangs down to my chin.
Sparky is a DJ now what a trip she was cool as hell. That is definitely some of the most interesting people I ever met were from Odyssey. Death Todd I think he might have chimed in here as well and if I remember right he had the coolest outfits because his mom worked at a theater or something like that.
Those days were great though we danced till 4am drank in that parking lot underground (just juice from the juicebar - yeah right) and everybody hugged goodbye to Softcell "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" at the end of the night even though we were all going to see each other again in a night or two.
As far as LB goes I was friends with and hanging out with Bobby for awhile so yes I remember LB. Father John I don't remember, the divas from Peanuts showing up yes I remember them (how could anyone forget Grace Jones dancing up there to "Nipple To The Bottle" on the podium)?
After Odyssey burnt down I still deeply loved the music so we would go to DOK West in Garden Grove, Seven Seas In Hollywood, Gino's II in Hollywood, El Paso Cantina in Long Beach, Pina Finis in Costa Mesa, then Helter Skelter in Chinatown and that brings up to pretty much current with Perversion and Dungeon. I still go and I still love the music.
We need to have another reunion!

Sparky is a DJ now and goes by Soulshaker Do you remember Riley Elliott? she is also a DJ in Los Angeles. I wish we could go back in time and have one last dance. Greg I know we know one another. We should talk!

Dec 13, 2007 | 3:07 pmHere are a couple of DO YOU REMEMBER? How about a Priest in his forties that was called Father John. You could find him at the Odyssey many nights. He really liked the younger cute guys, and had connections at Disney and other places. And was anyone a friend of David Turner, who died one night, driving home under some infuence, and ran off the freeway. He lived two doors from me in Burbank and we were good friends. He was a good kid.

Nov 23, 2007 | 7:23 pmI didn't realize that the club was so popular into the early eighties. We started going in 1976 and stopped in 78-79. I was watching Saturday Night Fever tonight and remembered that a lot of us dancing at Odyssey thought that the Bee Gees were horrible. It's taken me years to appreciate them but still can only take them in small doses. We were there when Donna Summer hadn't even become the queen of Disco yet. Love To Love You, Spring Affair, etc. We did the "Timewarp" every night. The dancefloor at Odyssey was so great. It's one of those impressions in life that stays with you like riding a great rollercoaster or seeing that perfect movie for the first time. Other groups of note, "The Emotions", KC, Sylvester, Anyone remember the Motown Medley and oldies being played like "My Boyfriend's Back"? Thanks to all the djs for having such a great knowlege of dancable tunes and rarely straying into novelty songs like Kung Foo Fighting or the worst... Disco Duck.
A lot of the great friends we had then died of AIDS 10 years later. Great unpretentious funny wonderful men.
Who remembers what was at the site of the Beverly Center? There was an oil derrick and an old boarded up carnival. Rexall Drug across the street was brand new. That's how long ago this was. LOL.
If we danced till closing then we went to Arthur J's for breakfast.

Oct 15, 2007 | 2:18 pmHi everyone!
The Odyssey was Magic. The Home of Disco, Rock and Movie Starrs! In a time of American History only comparable with the 1920's when the COKE was still in The Coke. DJ Steven Smith would single handedly create what we call Techno today! And Punk and New Wave would pave the way to Alturnative Music. You guys made groups like the Go G's, Devo, and The Romantics American Idols by packing the dance floor to is max capacity of 1,300 persons pushing record companies to sign artists and release records that would have NEVER happened! My ex danced to that music in a small town in Tennessee. American kids danced and partied to the music YOU made Famous from coast to coast! I am glad to hear that the Chuck Neon made it through the fire! Thank God no was in the club when the fire hit. On behafe of Owners Scott Harvy, Chris Cox ans DJ's Steven Smith, David Rubenstine, and Myself THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! Peace and Love!!
Chuck e Starr:)

Re: Chuck E Starr neon - As proud as I am of owning what is most likely the only physical artifact left in existence of the Odyssey, I'd be happy to relinquish it to him, if he wanted it. Does anyone know Chuck E Starr's E-mail address?
-
Apr 29, 2007 | 7:00 pmRandall~
Chuck E Starr is alive and well as well as an RN in Palm Springs these days. It would be great if you could get that neon back to him! <smile>

Mar 06, 2007 | 12:57 amOMG Mark Randall I remember you !!!!. The Odyssey was my life before leaving for college. If those sidewalks could talk. I have fond memories of dancing, laughaing and staying out all night with a great bunch of creative people. Hope Kaplan

Feb 15, 2007 | 3:02 amWow! I could write a book about life at the Odyssey. I first went there when I was 17 and over time became a “regular”. I became best friends with Adam Christopher (who was like, king of the Odyssey), he was an amazing dancer who made New Wave fashion a lifestyle. Absolutely everyone copied him.
I wound up going there AT LEAST 4 nights a week, frequently more. My friends and I would dance all night until the place closed at 4AM, and then we’d go hang out at The Greenery after that. Mind you, this was (usually) without the benifit of alcohol or drugs! That seems so weird now. Straight, Bi, or Gay, all kinds of people hung out there and everyone got along. I met the first guy I ever fooled around with there. It was all so new and exciting. I still remember my heart pounding out of my chest as we made out in the boxed in “make out” section of the TV room, you had to crawl up into it... Laying on that filthy black fun fur! Ewww.
Anyone remember the TV room? How about "Dancing Fool", "Acid Annie", "Sex Dwarf Alex", "Fat Pat" out on the back patio, or that creepy old wealthy albino dude, "L.B." and his collection of coked-up, under aged pretty boys (one of whom wound up murdering him). There were so many oddball regulars... After 2AM, the drag queens from Peanut’s disco would sometimes show up and wander the place like mini celebrities: Michaelangelo, Grace Jones, Viva.
The place started to suck towards the end of 1983 as it got more and more popular and all of us original freaks really resented it. Eventually the club lost it's dance license and overnight the place was history. It burned down under “mysterious” circumstances.
A friend and I broke in a day or so after the fire and wandered around. I knew at that moment that a part of my chilhood was gone forever, it was really sad. I also knew that I'd never forgive myself if I didn't take a memento from the place that had played such a huge role in my coming of age so I reached up to the DJ booth and grabbed the piece of neon that said "Chuck" (It would be lit on nights when "Chuck E. Starr" was the DJ), I still have it.
So many memories...

Jan 31, 2007 | 7:31 pmomg! i loved odyssey! i lived at that place. i started going there in 1980 when i was 15. they still played donna summer i feel love. it was great. back then girls didn't go to odyssey. the first night i went, a lesbian friend of mine dropped me off. i went in alone and was terrifed. i didn't dance. just sat along the front of the dancefloor (by the bar) and watched. i finally got my two lesbian girlfriends to come with me the next time i went. they were two of the first girls that started going to odyssey.
i remember ina and kristy. got a tshirt from ina that said queen for a day. lol. those were some great times! odyssey rip
-
Jan 31, 2007 | 7:31 pmI also got into the Odyssey at 16. I dated the Manager, and I worked there summer of 81 and 82. I was a regular fixture in that club from early 1980 until sometime in 1983. This was an 18 and over club, with no alcohol, and yet, was the most popular night spot of it's time.
-
Jan 29, 2007 | 8:36 pmI recall when you would be on the dance floor the lighting poles would start coming down from the celing.
I got in at 16.. with a hot older man come to think of it!

Hi PFields - I was going to the O from around march of 78 - 83. I remember the first night that I walked in (after scott harvy staired at my crotch the entire time I was paying my admission ($3 back then)) and they were playing Night Fevor by the BG's because it had just come out.. and so did I that night!! :)
