Its so funny watching the Jersey Shore, when we were doing the same thing in the 1978, same bars too, went to Temptations the weekend of their grand opening. Now these people are getting paid $17,000 a week to party and do the same thing we did, who knew!!!

I worked there from '68-'75. I was there when Joe "bos" took it over from the Hoffman brothers in '72 I think it was. Great guy to work for. Glad to hear he's still at it! We didn't have DJ's there at that time, it was all live bands, "The Chatters" (later changed to "Lock Stock & Barrel").
I remember Joey had a '72 or '73 Lincoln Mark duplicate "Pimp Mobile" from the James Bond movie "Live & Let Die". Great ride. Wonder where it is now?

I worked at Joey's North in 1978 during the week as a bartender/server, then on the weekends I would drive down the shore, stay in Ortley and work at Joey's Surf Club as a bartender. Im from Caldwell but all my friends are from West Orange and Newark. I had the best time in my life. And the money I made!!!! Joey was one of the nicest people I ever worked for.

I never went there untill the 90's, dont know why, just never did. But in the early 90's I went many times. I remember the crowd wasnt quite so young as it was before (or now).
Many people in their 30s, especially during the afternoons. We called it "the Gate House with sand" It was great because of the private beach. I dont know why people would pay $5 for just a beach pass when they could pay $5 admission to the Club and have showers, changing rooms, an inside place to cool-off, drinks & food at the bar, live entertainment, etc.

Hi EarlyGirl, Joey (Joe Barcelona), had several other clubs in the north Jersey area including Raggedy Ann's, it was way up route 46, I forget the name of the town. Billy Bud's (Surf Club North), Fairfield. Joey's Place, Clifton. All of which I had the good fortune to play at.

Oh, yes, this was THE place to be on summer weekends. Always packed - especially the dance floor. Joey had a club in North Jersey, and that crowd would migrate down, along with dancers from other clubs in NJ, NYC and Philly. Not to mention whoever else was at the shore. The club had been around for ages before Joey took it over in '73, and it's still going. I, too have great memories from the 70's - and probably saw Cheryl there!
Anyone remember the name/location of Joey's club - or clubs - up north?

What a great place. I'm from the Philly area and I had a summer place in Seaside Heights with a few friends and every Sunday afternoon everyone would be in the Surf Club in their bathing suits dancing the hustle. Great memories.

You left out one important deejay that worked there in the early seventies. CARLOS NODAL. I am just not sure if Joey Harrison was the owner then?
