YOUR MEMORIES & COMMENTS ON Down the Street

Down the Street opened when Asbury Park was the hottest town for Nightlife at the Jersey Shore. And it was a big hit. It was also the only club to survive Asbury Park's downfall. It didnt look like much, a small grey stone building on a street with a porn theatre, an abandoned amusement park, an abandoned play house and some more abandoned liquor stores. But despite its dismal surroundings, Down the Street stayed alive for years! The mgaic was inside, with the cool crowds and great lighting! Its a shame that it too was abandoned in 1999, after so many years of serving the dance community. It was good for gay and straight people, but a bigger club opened a block away and put them out of business. Down the Street moved to Florida, a new bar is there now, it is called Anybody's, but it isnt supposed to gbe as good as DTS, I have never been there myself so I cannot say.

Hi All,

I was one of the DJ's at down the street, and the club's soundman for a few years. I left NJ about ten months before it's demise. DTS was truly the quintescential "neighborhood disco", and was a true survivor of a very bleak period in ABP's history. I have so many good memories of that club, it truly was "home"! Gay pride was always off the hook, as were our multitude of other holiday parties and special events. It seemed like everyone knew one another there, no strangers, even if you had never been there before. Anyone know where the rest of the staff went? I assume most went to Shep Pettibones "Paradise", but not sure. Cheers All!
