Pulsations

LOCATION

Glen Mills, Pennsylvania (suburban Philadelphia)

CLUB DETAILS

Pulsations was an gigantic club about the size of a small indoor arena. The music was pretty good, but the lights were top notch. It had an upper deck where you could talk and meet people.

At midnight, a mechanical robot descended from the ceiling, then danced with a girl.

Unfortunately, I heard that the robot malfunctioned one night while being lowered and killed a patron.

The Pulsations was torn down in the 1990s.

Description: I was in a band named Blues Express that played at "Blues comes to Pulsations" on April 13, 1994. This was held by "Blues Avenue, K. J. Production Company." There were 5 other great bands there that night. Blues Express went on first. I was the lead vocalist. The whole concert was filmed and was supposed to be shown on TV, an underground station, I believe. I have NEVER seen the video, and would love to be able to see this. Does anyone know anything about this concert? This is a scan of the original flyer with the 6 bands listed. These were, in order of appearance: The Blues Express Dukes of Destiny David Coppa/Scrapple Steve Guyger/Excellos The Johnston Brothers Blues Man Willie.

Hi Ramsey, don't know if you'll remember me, I used to be a dancer 1995-1996 with Kimmie, Christine, Stephanie, John, John, and Ryan. Do you have any group photos from the photo shoots back then?

Fran |

I remember Pulsations night club and the entertainment director played my arabian horse tape there when they had their King Tut weekend. I also remember the scubba diving and bathing suit show that they had one weekend. This was truely a real good club !! Also, the entertainment director ( I can't remember her name) was wonderful. This club will always remain in good memory with me. I wish that it was still in the area !! I live in Unionville, Pa. and if there is another club like this one...tell me where it's at !!!!

DJ Steve Wilkinson |

Was my favorite place from the 1st time i went there! I started out at EONS in graterford, then a friend insisted i go with her to check out Pulsations..I couldnt believe it! every weekend after that was the 35 minute ride from Collegeville to go every Sunday and Thursdays til I turned 21, then went on Fridays when WCAU FM 98.1 broadcasted Live. I used to record the shows before I turned 21, unfortunately the cassete tapes didnt stand the test of time sitting in a closet for years..I have the egypt Pulsations reunion VCR tape I bought when i went to Egypt. I miss that place!..If we could only use the PA lottery money for 1 day, we could have the money to rebuild the place!! lol Could you imagine resurrecting Pulsations? wow!!

Chris |

Thanks for clearing up the story of the light fixture. It was very sad. It was not pulsar as mentioned above.Pulsations was always the name of the club. The lobby and the "Alternative room were part of the original building which was the longhorn ranch (a restaurant). The main room of the club and offices, hotel rooms were added in early eighties and Encore was open. Soon after that Pulsations was born. No sound or lighting came from Emerald City. The altemose family owned other clubs and some, not many pieces came from Eons.

"PG" (Pulsation Girls) |

I went there every weekend 89-94. It started on Sunday nights, when it would be a line of teeny boopers wrapped around the building waiting to get in. It didn't matter what the weather was, there were lines, especially if there was no school on Monday. You would wait until you could finally get into those front doors and then you would have to check yourself out in the mirrors as you walked in to make sure you were ready for your appearance, I had a ton of friends there, it was almost like a second family. After Pulsations was over, everyone would hit the Wawa's either by the Franklin Mint or heading down rte 1 south. Than onto Denny's. They were some good times, I have never been to another club like it. Today's teens don't know what they are missing.

C.J. Dougan |

Wow... what a blast from the past!

I came across this site while searching for info on "Voyce" that performed at Pulsations, circa 1992.

I was there regularly (usually multiple times/week, usually Thu, Fri and Sat), particularly heavy from mid 1990 (my 21st bday) to late 1994, coming up from Elkton, MD (60 miles roundtrip). Some will likely remember me (tall white guy, with dark brown hair w/ a medium-length ponytail... some people there jokingly called me Steven Segal), my amateur dance crew buddies "Six Trix" (me, Ezra, Dave, TJ, Bill, and ?Mitch?... sorry, been 20 years) and the huge crowd of friends we hung with (Jim and Adele Grandizzio from Drexel, Brian Linder and his roomate Jay from King of Prussia, and too many others to name here). We used to pack the Denny's down the road on Rt 352 after the club.

I did go to Club Egypt's Pulsation Reunion (can't remember the exact year), though I don't recall it being very eventful.

Looking back, from age 43, those were some of the best times and memories of my young adulthood 21-25.

If you remember me (or think you might) and want to catch up a bit, email me: cjdougan2 [at] gmail.com

Hit that club every Thurs nite straight for one year (except Thanksgiving nite)Incredible place, nothing like it since. Anyone remember the name of the song that would play when Pulsar would come down out of the spaceship, dancers would be dancing with flashlights.... the dance song had what I remember as some french or euro lyrics. Would love to hear that song again!

Ramsey |

I remember when they had the green lasers going. When the Bangles' "Walk like an Egytpian" was spinning, the lasers formed a little green egyptian guy with his arms out doing his moves. .....Unbelievable :)

Tom Pancoast |

Looking to fing the space ship and robot if anyone can help . I am opening an Under 21 Social Club .

Ramsey |

I have so many pictures from Pulsations Nightclub I worked there from 1984- to 1994 What WONDERFUL TIMES!

Bj Nolek |

Worked there for years. Worked security, Kitchen, and Light booth. Had some of the best times in my life there. I remember walking the lot on teen nights looking for alcohol. We used to take their ID's if they were cool, on the promise of giving them back at the end of the night. To their surprise, they didn't get them back until they cleaned our lot. Great crowd and great "family" of workers.

Lou |

Lisa do you remember me use to be a bouncer there when christine and Jerry were dating then. Mark B. and a hole lot of us.

Ron |

I most definitely remember Sunday nights. Nothing since has even come close to the experience we had there. Some of the guys...and girls from Dance Party USA used to show up and rock the stage. Dancing up on top of the boxes was the best place to see and be seen. During the days when Kwame, Rob Base, Kid N Play were all over the radio the Dj played those and the place went bananas!
I'm 38 now and remember and miss those good old days.

Diana |

Does anyone know if this was the same Margaret Jones (we called her Peggy) that graduated from Notre Dame H..S.in Moylan, class of '64?

steve tartaglia |

The young girl who was killed was Margret Jones. killed opening night when a light fixture came off of the ceiling track. I was an investor in the club in the early 90's and can tell you stories of this young girl haunting the building. we affectionately called her Maggie and we seen her many times in the building. the club was built by the Altemose Brothers and the cost to build in 2011 would be close to 25 million dollars, it was 20 years ahead of it's time.

I met my husband while him and I were working there, I worked coat room/gift shop then moved to waitress and findly bartender. The best years of our life! We still live local married 15 years and have three kids. Sad for my kids I can`t drive by and show them the old place, BUT that`s what my 100`s of pictures are for. Dose anyone remember the Eagle 106 party? One of the best parties next to every New Years Eve`s bashes. Sad to hear that a few of our past x/co-workers have passed :( Find video`s on u-tube.

Pam |

I also have fond memories of Pulsations. I remember when my mom showed me the flyer about it when they were starting the teen dances on Sunday nights. If I could go back in time for a week I would in a heartbeat! I will never forget all the wonderful people I met there and how much fun we had being teenagers. Pam

David Senkowsky |

Wow, what great memories. I used to live in Downingtown and also in Coatesville Pa and my ex husband and I went there once and we loved it so much, we told several friends. So we started to go often. Then I got a VIP card, I was so excited about that. So I asked if I could do a work party, where you invite people from work. And everyone from my job at the bank which back then was First Financial Savings Bank could get in for free that one night. It was usually $10.00 per person.

The music was awesome, yes it was loud but it was so good you wanted to be dancing all night long. The place had several bars like 5 or more, I liked the upstairs where couples could sit up in what I called balconies and looked down at all the dancers.

My favorite part was when around midnight the awesome spaceship that was on the ceiling would move towards the center of the dance club, all the lights on it would go on and all of the sudden you would see Pulsar the Robot, come down and dance with a girl (I got to dance with him once).

I heard that space ship or robot fell once and killed a person, but not sure of the details. If you ever watch the Movie Mannequin part 2 and look good they used Pulsations and even the spaceship in one or more than one of the scenes (the name Pulsations was not mentioned). Check it out. When I saw it I was freaking out. You can also see the stage (where the Pulsation dancers used to dance. Great memories!!!! Thanks

Carolyn |

Does anyone remember those male strippers, like the chippendales, in like 1989/1990? Would love to see pictures!

Ralph Matarese |

A DJ myself and belonging to the Philadelphia Metro Record Pool, Pulsations was a 1-1/2 hour ride from Princeton NJ. It was worth every visit. Seeing Jeffrey Rice (Pulsations DJ) picking up his promos ar Martin's (record pool location in Philly) we talked and he always invited us to come see the place. Renting a limo bus we packed 10-18 of us and took the trip. There was always something different going on.

The inside was enormous! So cool how the upper bar moved back from the dance floor as the night got crowded so it didn't look empty when first opening. So many people forgot to mention the high quality dance shows, the Michael Jackson "Thriller" dance stage show when the album came out. Looked exactly like the video. There were also flying trapeze acts that were incredible. When that huge spaceship came over the floor my jaw dropped the first time I seen it. Holy #$^&$@#@!!!

Pulsations was definetly the club of its era, Studio 54 didn't match up to it. So many things going on, and was choreographed so professionally. A true expierence I will always remember! Just when you thought you'd seen it all. I will truly miss that facility and may the talent that put it together be remembered always!

Pam |

OMG I lived there from like 86-89 on Sunday and tues nights (after I turned 18)in high school lucky my mom and dad were cool and would let me go by myself half the damn time from Delaware!

I was always on the 3 tier stage on the right hand side as u walked in on the upper back part were only one dancer could fit to dance and I would face the back of the club and dance my a** off…what exercise I got! Lol I ran that stage, like telling girls they had to get down after 3 songs and only girls were allowed on those to stages…wow such memories !!

I remember having my pink card and getting in on the short line as one of the first ones in. Also I was asked by the club to do spotlight dances and I remember doing one on the stage in the middle of the club floor and it raised up really high and they put black bars around me so I wouldn’t fall but I was scared out of my mind lol but I remember telling myself ‘put on a good show don’t look scared’ lol

And I danced the robot off to the back stage where they put him away… I would go even if was a holiday and if I didn’t show up ppl would ask me who died in my family cuz I was always there…and then right at the end of 89 summer after I graduated from school I was asked to go in the back offices and talk to someone bout becoming a pro dancer there. I remember being so disappointed cuz I would have loved nothing more then to dance for them but I was off to collage that fall!

GOOD FREAKING TIMES! But I wouldn’t trade it for my life now though…come look me up on MySpace its my fiancés ryanchristophergardner and see if u remember me lol I will only remember a few ppl though my memory isn’t good lol sorry, I sux at that lol

Cheers,
Pam

Was anyone at Pulsations in 1992 for Spring Break, when Marky Mark and Shabba Ranks were there? I was the girl that won "Miss Spring Break", only because the runner-up did jumping jacks and got disqualified. I'm interested to know if anyone has any pictures from that night?

Gene |

Pulsations was worth the drive from S J . Recently contacted someone I met there in 89. I'll always have good memories of that place. I remember seeing Expose' there. I 'll never forget the Halloween partys/contest and all the really hot girls from all 3 states. That place is so missed.

Andrew Woodward |

I practically grew up at Pulsations! From about 1985 until 1987 my best friend and I would go every Tuesday (under 18) and every Sunday (under 18). All of my girlfriends through High School were girls I met at Pulsations (Andrea Bosio, Stephanie Celii, Heather Newbury). I used to dance beside Jimmy "Jam" Ferguson on those nights as well. There was a heavyset lady named "Mama P." who, I believe, was some relation to Jimmy, as she was always guarding him.

I can't imagine my life without those memories. Dancing all night, sweating, drinking watered-down cokes from those silly plastic cups and then getting out to the parking lot and suddenly realizing everything sounded muffled because you had about 50% temporary hearing loss! Yeah, it was loud alright, especially on the platform next to the speaker.

I think the D.J. on Sundays was The "Motormouth" Terry Young, as I recall.

Those were good times. I miss those days.

Andrew

Cheryl |

I'll never forget a co-worker (friend) of mine asked me to go Pulsations to a Boeing party there in 1989? and I had a 1985 Mazda Rx-7 and it got stolen that night. Fortunetly, I met some guy who drove me around the parking lot and later drove me home. I knew it was stolen right away because I had a brand new 1985 Mazda RX-7 and that got stolen in 1987 at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia after I came out of a club. That one turned up in Fishtown completely stripped and the cop had to escort us down the street to see it. The one stolen from Pulsatsions ended up with a bent frame in Wilmington, DE. So my memories of that place were not too good.

Peg |

The first time I walked in there as a customer I knew I wanted to work there. Two weeks later I was working the security dept.(88-91) The only woman. It was GREAT. Every night was different and fun. What a great experience.

Steve Jones |

I was a former employee. I worked teen nights at the bar and tech crew for the stage on regular nights. Just one thing to say. Z CAVARUCCI'S!!! God, what were we thinking? Oh, I remember you Lisa... Rhythm Nation and Love Shack.... One more time! I went to the reunion at Club Egypt and saw a bunch of people I remembered. Glad that Danny Bonadouchbag didn't show up.

Lisa |

I was a dancer for Pulsations (before it went sleazy), with Kimmie D, Christine, Stephanie, John, John, & Ryan. We had so much fun performing every Saturday night on stage. Good times!

rod |

i was a hooked the first time i went .. being from maryland i was like wow all the cool colors. I was a regular from 92-93 than i could'nt stand to go cause of a female that i met there (not a bad thing) just wanted memories of her to stay special...

george ferg |

I can remember watching my brother Jimmy Jam Ferguson dancing on a riser above the floor imagine 9 years old and being able to dance like he could. There will never be another pulsations.

Joe Durkee |

I went to Pulsations almost every Sunday night and I remember I made a vow to myself that if I was spending 5 bucks to get in I wasn't going home empty handed. I also remember the music was extremely LOUD!!!! I loved it and I loved "hooking up" The girls were definitley HOT! I still can smell all the purfume and cool clothes I remember the year Drakar cologne came out and Polo had to have one or the other on if I was going to Pulsations. You weren't hookin up if you didn't have it on.....

Bella |

I remember going to this club and falling in love with a very hot bartender that decided to keep up with me doing shots all night. Don't remember his name - I just remember spending alot of money in that club.

Eddie |

The girls at the club were hot, hot, hot. They were the good ol days. Getting a BJ in one of the back rooms

Scintar |

I have done alittle work and also partied at that club in the late 80's
Pulsar was my idol as I studied his every move because i had a a job to do. I was for a short time Scintar the robot at Pulsations sister nightclub Scintillations in Valley Forge Pa. It was some fun times at Pulsations & Scintillations.

MarkyMark |

Yes, Pulsations. Huge club, great lights.

DJ Nova, I like how you replied to the original post about the robot. That accident was a real big story when it happened.

I hated that they would put nasty no parking stickers on your car window if you parked your car in a way they didn't like. The DJ would announce your plate number; you'd go out to move your car and see this huge sticker on your windshield that was difficult to remove.

My wife OFTEN reminds of the promise I broke on her 21st birthday. I promise to take her there in a limo. I stood her up and went to Flanagan's w/my buds. She still married anyway...6 years later.

Suzam |

Most of the Pulsations sound system & some lights came from the Emerald City in Cherry Hill. NJ after it closed.

Happy Wife |

Met my now hubby of 9 1/2years at Pulsations Night Club in May 1990!

Thank you Pulsations! We never would have crossed paths otherwise!!!

DJ Nova |

To Ziggy
The true story is a light fixture came loose and feel to the floor. This was I believe on opening night. Unfortunately for a young womenv she was killed. The club finally closed in the 90's because the neighborhood didn't want it any longer. Once the back end of the club turned to a strip clun it was over.
