If you missed the Circus experience back in the day, then you missed! There's no place like Circus. The deejays were off-the-hook, the sound system & lighting amazing, & air conditioning system that kept the air flowing full speed. The great crowd. All of this made for an atmosphere like no other. The Sunday bbqs and Wednesday nights, wow! Getting ready to go to Circus meant getting my outfit, makeup, and hair, just right...oh don't forget the pumps! Because of those Circus days, back in '81,...I've kept my tradition to this day; still making sure skirt, hair, makeup, & pumps, look nice. Except hair is toned down a bit & skirt is an inch lower, hahaa! Hey, anyone remember dancing to" Number One Lover" or "Unexpected Lovers" ??

Back in 1979 Sylvester handed me the mic to sing You Make Me Feel Mighty Real, I screamed out a few of the lyrics and then he gestured for the mic back. I was 21. What a blast. This was La La Land, the best place on earth for us Angelenos, especially from Eagle Rock!

I'm turning 49 as I type this note and I'm planning to make a cameo appearence ( maybe New Year's eve)cause I still look pretty goddamn good! since I'm an athlete and a former boxer. So how about it Gene? Any complementary tickets left?! your buddy Hector Da Boxer.

my first expirence Circus was in 1980 when disco was still at its peek. a girlfriend took me there for the first time(Marie Valenzuela) from Anaheim Ca.(where are you?)we used to go out dancing at least three times a week, to different places but the Circus was the best, the sheer size of the place, the sound equipment, the lights, the friendly staff, and the freaking hotties!that i met there, were just out of this world!! I can honestly say that if I was to die today, I would die I happy man, greatly in part for all the wonderful nights I spent at the Circus. I had the pleasure of meeting Gene La Pietra and was his friend.(he tried to pick up on me,) but since I'm not gay (only gay friendly)
    It didn't happen lol, lol,!!

  • Tony ( aka Fernando )

Circus, Geno's II, The River Club etc etc, What a time. I remember meeting this little black queen who thought she was all that. Ms Thomas, Who knew that he and I would live the 80's dancing away at Circus. Everyone has GOT to remember Fernando and Thomas, who can forget those damm high heel pumps he wore and the crazy outfits I always wore. We showed Everyone how to DANCE. Unfortunately he died sometime in the late 90's ( yes it was HIV) I am now known as Tony and STILL dance and wear MORE crazy outfits ( you all must remember me doing those Fan dances, I now do it with flags) I go to most of the Pride events. Would be nice to see whose still around, I know I am. Everytime I hear a disco song it takes me back to Circus and ALL the people and friends I used to know. Memories can be bittersweet......

all those comment's remind me of simply califonias idea of studio 54! so many good times had there and so many new friends made! oh and the girls ranked the best! me and my friends in the 1980's would also go to pappion's in monrovia, baby does, luminaria's,red onion in west covina, wing's,the metro in riverside, streamer's,and quiet cannon!but most of the days were spent(wed, sat.and sundays at no.1and i will always remember thar place with the great memories!

I used to go to Circus early Sunday afternoons just to practice my dance moves. I had a regular dance schedule.. Sunday-Circus, Tuesday- Oscos, Wednesdays-Dillons "Ladies Night" , Thursdays-Candilejas, Friday-Fantasia, Saturday Date Night
I started hanging at Marilyns Backstreet Pasadena in 79-80, Grew up at My Uncles, Ginos, Le Chic, The Tiki Room - Then graduated to Voila, Max151, Doheny Room, Among others -Gosh so many memories.
I'm actually trying to find my prom date from 1980, whose name was Willie. I met him at Maryland's Back Street and he also frequented Candilejas. Nice guy! I have an apology for him - long time coming.

I have very fond memories of Circus. The music, the atmosphere, and of course the hot chicks were second to none. It was my home away from home on Wednesday, Sat. & Sunday. I started going there in 1984 when I turned 21. Gene was always sitting outside greeting people. Sadly those days are gone and will never be replaced. Memories is all that's left. But we must be thankful to have enjoyed such a wonderful '80s decade that a lot of people today will never enjoy. Wether the music or the club, I doubt it very much that a club like Circus exists today with the same atmosphere. Don't believe me? Ask any younger person that's clubbing now days what the dress code is at the clubs. You'll here that is jeans and t-shirts. Even though Circus's dress code was pretty relaxed the girls that entered the door were wearing nice dresses and the guys at least a button up shirt and slacks. Yeah, all of us from that era are in our 40s and 50s now but we all know that Circus was the #1 club in all of SoCal.

Glad "Circus" & Gene are still there. "Circus Disco" should NEVER be knocked down. It would be a waste! Let whomever carries on the torch in the future, know what "Circus Disco" is worth in spirit & let it reign!

I was only 17yrs old back in 77 when I first walked into to Circus Maximus at that time. I was at Ginos that night and decided to walk down to Circus. When I walk in I was so excited I felt the Energy in that room the Lights the music blowing from these Big Huge blue speakers sitting on the four corners of the dance floor, I still remember hearing I need a man by Grace Jones & Stop in the name of love by Ronnie hill being played, I will never forget that moment of my life.

I went to Circus Disco the same year it opened till about 1981 . It was an experience every time I would go. I did not know everyone's names, nor did everyone know mine, but we knew each other through recognition. I moved from LA in the 80s, and have not been back. From Mike Lewis....one of the best DJs I ever heard, to Craig Morley, Victor Flores, Martin.....the memories I will never forget. I am almost 60, and to know that Circus Disco still exists and flourishes, is a wonderful thing. And yes...Disco Stan Morris, that man knew how to make every night a party. I am glad that other generations, were able to enjoy the Circus experience.

Memories of Circus Disco take me back to the late 70's shortly after Circus first opened their doors. I was a regular and spent a minimum of 4 to 5 nights a week there. There was no place like it on the planet and the early days were incredible! Gene and Eddy were the owners until Eddy passed away several years later. They were always there welcoming people every night. Gene continued the tradition onward after Eddie's passing. For all you old timers, (those of us now in our 50's), we were in our prime during the disco 70's. How many of you remember "Disco Stan" one of the original DJ's at Circus? He spun the hits night after night. The crowd would scream when "Ring My Bell" or ANY Donna Summer hit was played. "Hot Stuff" or "Sunset People" brought the crowd to it's feet. The Sunday barbeque was a must for great food, fun times and fabulous eye candy!

Circus Disco will be a bright spot in my memory until my final days. Long live Circus Disco!!

Performing at the "Austin Women's Film, Music, & Literature" Festival this weekend....can't find a place like "Circus Disco" anywhere. lol

Like Austin though. They are vegan friendly...something Miami is not...but LA is...

I am so glad "Circus Disco" did not not close its doors to all who need the soullifting & physical release that dancing to the music & the atmoshere gives. Thanks to Gene the owner for allowing me to have a picture of "Circus Disco" on my upcoming cd, which I am planning to perform today entitled "Don't Slip That Pill In My Drink."

LOL,jmo63. I went to college in Miami before moving to LA, and you're right! The "2am last call" was challenging to get used to after being in a place where cover isn't even charged until after 11pm or 12am.

I haven't been to Circus in ages, but for decades it has always been one of the most welcoming clubs in LA. People of all races, economic status, and sexual orientation are there for one main reason: MUSIC & DANCE. A rarity in LA (or anywhere else for that matter).

I have so many wonderful memories of that cavernous place-mostly from the 80s. I remember seeing Claudja Barry ("Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes") perform the first night I visited.

  • jmo63

I went once in '96 when visiting LA and had a great time. Being from Miami and not knowing any better, we arrived at the club at about 1am and were very surprised when the "last call" was announced at about 145am and the lights came on and the music stopped at about 2am.
The music was phenomenal and the atmosphere was fun. This place is an institution.

  • Unique Monique AKA Monique Marissa

I love the place. The club's atmosphere, ultra friendly vibes, & spiritually, adrenaline, uplifting music has taken me away from life's weekly struggles. I have interviewed many djs, who have spun on an electronica radio show, I co-host.

The owner, Gene, was kind enough to let me ask patrons at the door & inside if they will sign a volunteer petition to end farm animal abuse in CA.

Also, I am planning to release a single titled "Don't Slip That Pill In My Drink." I needed a picture of a bar for the cd cover, & again the kindness of "Circus" allowed for the photo. You can take alook at the phot on MySpace.com/MoniqueMarissaAKAUniqueMoniqueMusic

I will never forget "Circus" & how it welcomed me with open arms when I 1st got here 2.5 years ago, & how it kept it's arms open every weekend, especially the extra ordinarily wonderful entrance greeter, David Cole, who makes sure to give a platonic hug to all who walk in. The love starts at the door & ends hours later as u are leaving the park lot The high u get the next day from having danced your spirit free is wonderful...except if u go to bed past 4am...then it can be rough.

Please vote for "Don't Slip That Pill In My Drink" by NYE 2007 if u would (with the picture of the main "Circus" bar & bartender). Details to get on the voting site are in my blog.

Happy New Year & God Rest "Circus' Soul" ...and let me tell u, it had ALOT of it.
    Monique

Circus Disco was huge. Huge! The speaker's bigger than my apartment. Went there one night when they had a semi retro night and played Donna Summer's Love To Love You, Baby. Never heard that song played like that coming from those bass beats, will never be quite the same. Ah!

  • Frank I.

Circus Disco was such a blast I began going there 23 or 24 years ago. Had many firsts there, I knew how to play hard. I was also a My Uncles and Geno's boy
I still go to Circus a few times a year. I will upload some pictures later.
