Really cool and hip Center City Club with great music and a wild cowd. Philadelphia's version of Studio 54.
I had a VIP membership and they really treated me right!
I miss that great era. Minus Reagen of course!

YOUR MEMORIES & COMMENTS ON Second Story
I worked there for a number of years durring it's popular days in the late seventies and early eigthies. Many many fine memories. Many people I miss. Where did everyone go?
Rick hi....i was the "Club Scene" columnist for the PGN back then...and was at SS all the time the same time you were there....:0
Bill :)
Hello Bill,
I work with my then girl friend, now my wife, in the coat room. I did other things before that, the door, a bar back,etc.. But most people remember me and my wife working the coat room. Jimmmy Scaffitti was the manager. Edie Rolfe was a bartender there then, Micheal Zakoski, Gary Connell... So many old friend and so many are now gone.
Rick...yeah many of my friends from that happy time are gone too! Those days seemed as if they would go on forever, didn't they?
Bill :)
wow, i am home alone on a saturday night in milano, italy. a radical change from those disco years at the 'story'. you couldn't keep me away from there. i was feeling nostalgic listening to some old disco hits and i got the idea to look on google and found this site. ric, i remember you well, and also your wife. i worked at the story's front desk with maureen and for years after she left. this is sam. i have been living in italy for over 15 years now. i am still in contact with gary c. i passed probably the best years of my life there. in all my travels i have never found a place like the 'second story', what is jimmy scaffitti doing now?
Yeah...i use to hang out with Michael Parks who owned a club on Delancey...and also worked as a bartender fro him there and at the DCA ...i lived on Spruce near 17th...man i miss those days! :)
Bill
Sam, How are you. It it so good to hear from you. Yeah, i miss those dayat the Story. I was just looking at my memership card from 1977. (i think i might have chaged justa little). Tell Gary Linda and Rick said hello. We havent seen or talked to him in years. We move to South Beach in 92. Linda still keeps in touch with maureen. Italy huh? We were there in 2000. Wish I would have know we could have meet up. I havent heard about Jimmy in years, dont know what he is doing. Lets keep in touch!!
i knew maureen too! she was great to me...didn't she also work at an adter-after hours club....i forget the namw..but it was down a flight of stairs..it opened at about 3am and closed about 10 am...she would give "special" guests doughnut holes w/ a "treat" in them...:)
i can remember going up those stairs at 10 am..as the sun became brighter & brighter..i was like a vampire..LOL
Bill Fisher :)
Catacombs. It was in the basement of the same building. We all used to go when the club would close. We would take the elevator down to the basement.
Well, Sammy how ya doin' in Milan, this is dj frankiewho... Things are great in Philly and all the Story jocks...Frankie Gee, Billy Kennedy, Wayne Geftman, Carmen Nataro, Valerie Luzi, Ronnie Arena & myself still stay in touch with each other and still swap old stories and music...I will ask Wayne how Scafidi is, haven't seen him
I still see Sandy Santilli and Debbie Moffo and Barbar Leary also... We have been trying to get Wayne and Barry to have a reunion party for the longest time, wait till I tell him you posted on this site...too funny.. stay well and Giuliano Salerni from Philly lives in Busto and we may see him in the summer or fall in Milano....
cya soon
Frankie
oh yeah the catacombs...:) now i'm usually in bed by 10 pm...:)
Billy Stinger says Hello to the Gang!!
Hi, here's Giuliano Salerni happy to find out some old Philly guy is living in Milano.
I discovered the SS thanks to the great Frank Sestito and is fantastic music.
Hope to meet SAM. I am in Milno everyday of the week.
This Del, Jimmy Del's Brother. I am almost in tears seeing the emails and the RIP notice on Jimmy. I have regular parties at my house where I spin all the old SS classics (of course, not as well as Frankie G, Frankie S, Billy K, etc did. I really have a lot of old second story "stuff": invites, tapes, a piece of the DJ booth that Wayne gave to Jimmy, a pair of the old 1800s, great pictures, articles from the papers, etc. I started going at age 18 in '77 so the DJs above, Maureen, Jimmy S, Sam @ the desk, etc. where and are a part of some of the best memories I have (and my wife hears it all the time!). I would be more than happy and privledged to get an SS reunion together. I grew up with Robbie Tronco (who still DJ's a lot in this area - I spin with him on occasion) so we can definitely get a great venue. To all reading this, thanks for remembering my brother Jimmy Del and hope all of you are healthy and happy. Feel free to email me @

Jimmy (Del Raffles) was a complete lighting and club atmosphere genius. I was lucky to work shoulder to shoulder with him from the day the story opened till it closed.. He never miss a beat..ever...He was the master of the "flash cube" and remember.. he did that whole show with two controllers, manual switching and a foot pedel..there was never a pin beam or gel out of place...and how he controled the giant mirror ball was an art in itself..
He is sorely missed by all, he was the light person eveyone wanted to be and every dj wanted Jimmyto be there as their light person...
Tell Robbie I say hey and tell your wife, all the stories are true ...and then some...
Frankiewho
Frankie, what kind and true words about Jimmy. I have great pictures of the two of you working at Someplace Else and the Story. Send me an email at the address above and I'll have them scanned and sent to you.
Also, for the true Second Story and music "heads" out there: Frankie Who's mix of Johnny Gibbs and the Jam Band's J'Ouvert is a classic. I used to play it all the time while on the radio at Penn State in '79-80 and still "sneak it on" mix CDs I make today. Peolpe always ask who did it and the answer is simple: "Who"!!
I also loved Billy Kennedy's Direct Current mix and Wayne G's mix of I Love NY by the Steve Karmen Band - I actually have a 10" acetate of that from Wayne. I'll stop now, I can go on forever.
If anyone else has some stories regarding my brother Jimmy, I'd love to hear them as, unfortunately, all my family is now gone. Thanks!

Jimmy Del was a great person, he is missed.
Hey Frank, remember no matter how many people were on the dance floor the Story's sound system always had enough volume to enhance a crescendo or strong vocal riff to drive the crowd to a frenzy. Everytime I play the tapes we recorded back then and I hear David Christies "Don't Stop Me I Like It " I have a flashback of being in the Story, crowd going wild as was the usual when you were playing. Reunion time...2 a piece?

Carmen, I really feel bad that I didn't include you on the Story's DJ list... I always enjoyed your music. It's funny that you mention David Christie... I always used the album version because I didn't have a 12 and just found one last week. I also have a tape from Frankie G where he is actually talking on it... to wish Jimmy a happy birthday (9-29-79). Carmen / Frankie / Billy S, I just spoke to Robbie T about a reunion. 114, in old city is a nice, new space that is intimate enough but has a decent system AND TURNTABLES. I know the owner, Sal DiPalma, who had the restaurant there - DiPalma's and also one is S. Philly. Frankie, have you seen the interview of a guy named Phil Labash on one of the disco sites? He really says some nice things about you and has great pictures of memorabilia - including a VIP membership to The Laft in S. Philly with your signature!

Hey Philly ! This is Rich Q (Frankie Who's wingman on the TEAC booth recorder). I was honored to spend almost every Wednesday and Sunday night in the booth with djFrankieWho, to watch and listen to the master spin his stuff. NOBODY could double two records like you, Frank. And I have the tapes to prove it. I passed them all over to Tommy C. to archive those old 10 inch masters. What a trip.... Literally!! Now, I'm living in sunny Florida, still shaking my a** to all those great mixes. How do we upload pictures on here? I have a great one of Frankie and Jimmy Del in the booth.

Hey Frank long time no see. I stumbled on you by accident and wanted to say hello!
Hey Gang! Carterette is in da house. I was Billy Kennedy's light man at The 2nd Story and Sundance. I was also David Todd and Wayne Geftman's light man at The Catacombs. And for me it all started with Valerie Luzi at the teen discos at SomePlaceElse. This page brings back so many sweet memories.
I was born and raised in South Philly and there was no other club like Second Story. My best friend Gina Maglio worked at the Pocono Record Pool with Frankie (?) who knew Frankie Sestito. He sent us to SS (from the Loft) and we found nirvana. When we tried to bring in our so. philly friends to SS, Maureen re-voked our memberships and we were crushed. We got back into her favor and spent just about every night there. Great times...we'll never forget.
There will never be another Second Story
I can still feel the base in my chest when I remember walking up those stairs; Maureen laughing and asking me if I had lude for her...
My Gosh, Frankie Goodman - nobody could spin like him. Eddie at the back bar and the spiral staircase that I usually fell down... When I did make it up there it was a Make-Out fest and I happily joined in... The popcorn filled baptismal font and the crowd... Take me back, what about a Reunion?
I spent about 3-4 nights there and would go tonite if I could
Love to all who hung out there...
Boogie Oogie Oogie
MY NAME IS DONALD CARUCCI.
I HAD A SMALL HAND IN THE MAKING
OF THE SECOND STORY. DOES ANYBODY
REMEMBER ME? IF SO, SAY HI...
Donald... this is Frankie Sestito..are you kidding how could we forget the greatest sound man in the world!!! And all around great person...we still talk about your crossover's
I can't wait to show this page to Wayne,Barry.Carmen, Frankygee, Charles Cusanno and Ronnie Arena.. and of course Eddie Gifford... we still talk all the time...Thank you Thank you Thank you for all your help and hard work over the years.. you were truly instrumental in so many projects... Music Box.. Second Story..Sundance.. Discovery... Someplace else and the list goes on and on..
Keep in touch we all need to catch up real soon..
Frankiewho
I worked as the Dj at Brother's 3 in central NJ. Trained by Franky Gee and inherited the club as he went to New York and Philadelphia. The club closed at 1:45, so I had the option to get to Manhattan in 30 minutes, or get to the Second Story just in time to slide in, 90 minutes before closing. Of course, with The Catacomb option being at hand, it was an easy choice. I got a taste of Second Story, and then was able to drop down into The Catacomb, which always was memorable. It was always great to see FrankyGee, FrankyWho, Wayne, andwhoever else floated in.
hey frankie......
great to hear from you, and to know that most of the old crew are still alive and well. actually took a ride to philly a few months ago to get some "pats steaks and
to check out the old neighborhood. We really should try to get together and have a real party sometime. What became of Tommy Armstrong? How about the Library? There was a girl there I used to dance with all the time, her name was Jam Richardson, the daughter of the baseball player Bobby Richardson.
Does anyone know her?
talk to you soon, and say hi to all.
donald
Texas Tom is great and so is Jimmy Scaffidi, Jan Asbourne passed some years back on April 1 and her Dad Ritchie Ashbourne is also no longer here...
But on a different note.. Wayne will be posting soon, he was thrilled when he saw your note... although this is not a chat room or forum, maybe Bernie will allow your e-mail address so we can talk to each other soon and catch up on things..
Wayne and I were with Jackie McCloy and Paul Cassella at the LI Record pool 30th anniversary party a couple of months back and I found some more photos and invitations that I will be scaning and posting soon at each clubs site soon.. stay tuned..
Talk soon... Luv Frankiewho
Wayne and The Gang
What ever happened to those days. You let me give some great parties there. The best club in Philadelphia! Where do people go now? Can't be as HOT as SS was. Would love to come back to Philly if you have a new club, let me know.
Loved reading about folks memories of these clubs. I was more into Catacombs then the Second Story. The routine was Paradise Garage first and if I just couldn't get to NYC or didn't feel it or wanted to change up then Catacombs and every once in a while trip down to D.C. to the clubhouse! Those were the happiest days of my life! Don't let me hit lotto cause I'd do my best to bring it all back. Thanks!

Mike Brooks
ps where is Frank Lembo?
It blows me away to see all of this here. Second Story is a legend.
Maureen gave me a VIP pass, Thank God.
The lines went around the block to get in. Frankie Sestito, Kurt Borusiewicz, Wayne Geftman all part of an era. I had heard from another DJ, Michael DeCero who was a DJ at DCA that Kurt had passed away. I was very saddened by that bit of news. The pictures bring back so many memories. Huge sound, lights and looking down from the top onto the dance floor. Crowded with people in a frenzy caused by Frankie.
Whenever I hear The Chase I think of SS.
Thinking back I have to say thank goodness I lived a few blocks away and could walk home. Yeah, it was that wild! Does anyone remember another club that opened in AC? Don't remember the name but remember being there when it opened. There were SS people there.
And Frankie you would know me if you saw me. Even after all these years.
Gypsy
OMG. What a great ride reading this page has been. Our house was more SOME PLACE ELSE but the STORY was part of the complete package. We hustled into history and are still kicking it at CLUB TRU. Somebody needs to start that reunion going, I'm sure we can pack the house again. Now that we're older, I'm left wondering how we ever made it back to NJ after going from the STORY to the CATACOMBS. What a party!

Wow what a flash back. I was there from the start. And what a start Wednesday Night in the Snow with the line around the block. Wayne, Barry I was at the time Bill Brutons (Cowboy)other half.
What a ride. I still have my Gold Window you gave me at Xmas. What a window to my past. Christina
Just wanted to say what a great club Second Story was. I used to play the tambourine and other percussion instrutments with my friend Chip. The DJ's would stop the music and let us play to let the crowd go wild. There were big chips of wood missing above the speakers where I used to sit and hit wooden sticks and my tambourine. One of the pictures above shows the DJ Richie Keser who played a SS. He went on to DJ at Studio 54. Do you remember Wie Lang,Anthony Dario and Pete Stewart ?They worked the front door with Maureen. Great Memories....

Used to stand by the booth and the speaker with my best friend ChaCha-rest his soul. I was so proud when Wayne gave me my SS Tee shirt. I can still hear BOOM BOOM BOOM when I walk down Walnut Street

hi all...
they left out my first entry which

My friend Scott and I used to drive from Brooklyn to Philly every weekend and go to the Second Story, the Philly girls loved us. I remeber the last name of the guy Schavo he worked the out side enterance. We had our spot at the end of the bar along the wall. Every night my name and Scoots name were written on napkins with a vodka & orange juice a top. The bartenders (female) name was Chris. Loved the club, loved the music and the girls from Philly really loved us. I am in Philly at the moment 1st time in about 25 years.
Donald; as you know all everyone is down the shore till after Labor Day... I will show "The Wiz" your notes..we are all ready for that big bash soon... Take care....

Donald Carucci
EVERYONE,
I think I am close to what everyone has been waiting for: THE Second Story - Catacombs Reunion!!! I just started playing at a cool room at the old Egypt (now Solo) - great sound system (especially vs. what most "clubs & lounges" have today... it isn't a Geftman - Eddie Gifford masterpiece!). And while the lights are minimal (espicially with respect to Jimmy DEL in SS and Carterette in the 'Combs), we can definitely have a great time.
The date I've asked them to hold is November 23... figuring that many people may be HOME in PHILLY for Thanksgiving and this is the Friday night the day after. That would also give us two months to get the word out.
I also have a hold on October 19 if most people think this day is better.
I'll wait to hear responses and would also love to talk directly to Wayne & Barry (I am respectful of the LEGACY... I even have the piece of the DJ booth that Wayne gave to Jimmy mounted on the wall in my condo!) and Frankie Who.
PLEASE contact me by email @

We can trade cell phone numbers and then speak directly.

WAYNE G.........
SOMETIMES I TRY TO READ THESE THINGS
TOO FAST AND THOUGHT IT WAS EDDIE G...
WHO POSTED THE NOTE ABOUT THE REUNION.
BUT NOW I SEE IT WAS YOU. ABOUT TIME YOU RESPONDED TOO THIS REUNION THING!
WHAT ABOUT IT?
DONALD CARUCCI
I think a reunion would be fine if it were put together by the originals not the imposters.
Wayne.....
I agree!
Which category do you think I'm in?
DC
Wayne, I hope that you are comfortable with my proposition. Your message was a bit "cryptic". Know that my musical SOUL and some of my best memories were created because of your vision & creation of Ths Story & Catacombs. Also, obviously, my brother's place in that history gives me great memories.
The efforts I've put into posting the pictures, writing some bios, etc. are grounded in the respect and desire to keep the greats days of your masterpiece alive...
Since I remain in the music scene, to a degree, in Philly, I thought that "getting the ball rolling" by proposing a date, getting some feedback, getting the word out would help start things. What I can tell you is that there isn't a week that goes by that someone doesn't ask me about "doing something" to remind them of the old days of The Story / Catacombs... prompting me to DJ with a "musical story" that hopefully honors those request (if not at least plays a weak immitation to the actual mixes that I remember from you, Who, Goodman, Billy K, etc.).
I will wait to hear your thoughts but would love to speak. Please feel free to sen dme an email and I'll email you back with my phone number.
Anyone else who has thoughts and/or ideas, please reply.
With respect,
DEL (Robert Del Femine)

thank god for EXTREME MAKEOVER!
Sam / Wayne, whatever it takes... sometimes a "remix" isn't bad.
Wayne, I was just looking through some old papers and found a RECORD WORLD report with your top songs for April '77: #1 Body Contact Contract / Disco Inferno; #2 Do What You Wanna Do.
I playing @ Solo tonight and I actually have the front of the old SS match book taped to my mixer... always an inspiration!!

HELLO EVERYONE.....
THE TALK WAS GETTING HOT AND HEAVY IN
SEPTEMBER ABOUT THIS "REUNION BASH"
AND I ACTUALLY THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS GOING TO COME OF IT. BUT THE EXCITEMENT
SEEMS TO HAVE DIED OUT AND YOU GUYS ALL
DISAPPEARED. WHAT'S UP? DO I HAVE TO COME TO PHILLY AND GET THIS THING GOING MYSELF? DO YOU THINK THIS CAN HAPPEN BEFORE I DROP DEAD OR WHAT?
DONALD CARUCCI
Over the years coming back to Philly I stop on Walnut St and look up at those 'famous windows' and think how it takes me back 30 years. Many times I thought about how exciting a reunion would be, however for me. the folks I knew there are gone- Kenny Klink, Paul and my friends that came in as customers.I work weekends in DC but want to thank Wayne for hiring me as a bar back so I could be a small part of SS history-in my own mind- Hope the reunion is a blast- Yes the night it snowed ( white feathers, black light and strobes)is forever in my mind-Together in electric dreams!! David M
Hi Wayne, do you remember me? I could not believe my eyes when I came across this website. Remember you used to take me to all those New York discos..............and you gave Sharon and I VIP passes.....I'll never forget opening night..........what an era!!!!
Great to see all of the new post. I could not help but think about Sunday nights "Hairdressers Night" Molly, Debbie & Lisa...and all the rest who had off on Mondays..Donald & Sammy.. I was with Franky G two weeks ago in Atlanta and he is doing great.. Wayne, Franky and myself still talk music these days at least a couple of times a week... I will see Wayne next week and I'm sure Bernies page will be one of the things we will talk about. I've recently seen Barbara Leary ,Gifford and Mario even spoke to Texas Tommy... Stay tuned..

Wayne & I met last week and we spoke at length about an Official Second Story reunion, we touched on a lot of ideas including people, venue's etc. One of the dates discussed was Nov/Dec 2008. This would be a significant date as it's the 20 year anniversary of the clubs closing it's doors and give ample time to do it in the "Second Story Tradition"... Wayne indicated to me that he will post his thoughts soon ...
Frankiewho
great to know, i think we ALL would prefer to go to the OFFICIAL REUNION even if we must wait another year, just let me know well in advance as i must plan a flight from europe and vacation days! regards to everyone including my fav dj's!

Only if Donald Carucci is in the house
Wayne, I volunteer to work on the reunion. Frankie Who is a god. I second the motion for a get together sooner than later. After the reunion I can die in peace.
Hi Sammy !
I just came across this web site. Even thought I started at SS closer to the end it was and always will be a special place for me. No one has ever duplicated the sound, lighting and energy. Barry and Wayne thanks for it all. I will of course always be willing to volunter if a reunion should come about.

kathleen, i am not sure who you are. were you using the alias'lennie lazer'??? you sang with a punk band at a punk club also and you were friend's with gia? i only this past week, thanks to this site was contacted by anthony(worked sat. nites at the desk with me)was an original of the group with gary, bobby and maureen.
I was 17 in 1979 when I started going to SS and Catacombs. I had no trouble getting in. A guy named Rocko and a guy named Kenny Carter were the people I remember. We always had a great time. I also remember a club that used to be a bank, where maybe someone dressed like an ape swung from the ceiling. We also frequented Elan, The Library, Faces (in Harleysville and Scintillations in I think King of Prussia. Those were the days!

All,
I finally had to do it... I went into the law offices that now "populate" the once hallowed building that we all love. I actually went down to where Catacombs was and then "upstairs" to the "second story"... amazingly, where the best sound system on the East Coast and my brother's amazing lights shined brightly, is a beautiful BUT VERRRY QUIET law library. Church to Disco to Library... that building has been on a journey.
Happy New Year to all the Story "Heads" out there and I hope we hear about a reunion soon.

Those were the best days of my life. Before SS opened, my life was all about dancing, going back and forth every weekend to clubs in NYC or northern NJ to learn the newest latin dances with friends that had the same interest and then SS opened up around 1978?! From then on, that was my home every Saturday night. I would leave my house around midnight to get there to see all of my dancing friends. It was a place where you left all of your problems behind by drinking and dancing the night away to the greatest music, people and atmosphere there ever was in Philadelphia. My gay hairdresser was a regular there too. It was a thrill! SS really was the Studio 54 of Philadelphia! I'll never forget when I was bringing in a guest and had to wait in a very long line and Maureen saw me and pulled us out of the line to get into the club. I must have known then that I was considerd a regular. I might be wrong about this but I thought Wayne Gefman's brother Barry? opened up the River Cafe in Manayunk in 1991 which was almost an equally good club. I still have 2 membership pictures from SS which I've kept. If only we could go back to those disco days again, the best music ever!

Sammy ... When I first starting reading this, it didn't click that you were the Sammy that I remembered at the front desk w/Maureen. What are you doing living in Italy? I don't know if you remember me or not, it was so long ago now ... (31 years ago!) it's Cheryl and I was friends with Michael Minitti (maybe his name might click with you better). There will never be a time like that again and I'm glad I got to be a part of it. If you remember, write back.

cheryl, sorry by name i do not remember you, michael's name i kind of remember. i am sure if i see your face i would remember you, the 714's have not dulled my fantastic memories of the 2STORY, the fabulous music and people. i have been here in Italy for approx. 20 years. i am a photographer and work in the fashion industry here.
Sammy- Wow, I never expected such a fast response back! I didn't think you would remember me. What I remember is hanging out with you and Michael down at the front desk. I can almost picture what you look like now after all of these years. Do you know Robert Vano (my hairdresser that I spoke of in an earlier message)? He also moved back to Europe a long time ago and is a photographer too.

To Disco Diva -- to answer your question about the name of the club in AC -- it was called "Chez Paree," I think on New York Ave.

i am still in touch with robert vano! he is a model agent and photographer as myself living in prague now! we speak for business every now and then! the Chez Paris', dancing to france jolie 'Come to Me'!
Sammy -- yes I have looked Robert up on the internet and found out that info about him and I also looked at your web site and saw that the both of you do similar work.
Like I said, those days were just great times but "good times don't last forever." That was a disco song too!

I was a good friend of Jimmy Del Fem (as we called him) back when....I lived at 6th and Pine and Jimmy was part of the crowd I so loved. I was of course devastated to hear of his passing (as so many of that wonderful era have passed on).
I lived only a few blocks away from SS in the 80's and was there at least 3 nights a week - what good times!!! Went to the other clubs mentioned also - such memories!!
Kathy Staller (nee Rubin)
Kathy, what a nice message to read as the 19th anniversary of my brother's passing was on 8-11. I'd love to hear any stories or see any pictures you may have of Jimmy! You can email me at
rdel53@comcast.net
Ironically, my wife and I live at 6th & Locust and I remember when Jimmy lived on Pine St. for a number of years with a woman named Mary.

Not sure if you would remember me, my name is Matthew and I worked the light show after Jimmy left. I worked the light system at Scintillations when I met Jimmy Del. He and I became friends, and when he left the SS I took his place, and what a tough act to follow. I can't get over all the names I've read on this site that bring back such great memories. Working with Frankie Who and Frankie G.(You're still my hero). Worked with Valerie, Frank Cerami and Barbara Leary at Scintillations, and the list goes on. To Jimmy Scaffitti... please order more of those flash bulbs.
