The Starck club in Dallas was designed by Philippe Starck, owned by a group of investors led by Blake Woodall. (Stevie Nicks was an investor. She performed opening night, as did Grace Jones.) In 1985 became notorious for rampant Ecstasy use. DJs included Rick Squillante and Mike DuPriest (both deceased).

Description: hi again STARCKIES!, this photo is from the visit by ALLEN GINSBERG to STARCK CLUB. he is standing in the unisex bathroom. note the fantastic floor-to-ceiling mirrors. happy holidays to all, and by this time next year, i hope we have filled another 2-pages on this awesome diary of the never will be forgotten nightclub.

Description: The infamous bathroom stalls at STARCK. Stalls came complete with your private SONY television monitor, that would shut off automatically when not in use. All push button toilets, as seen on this photo, and light sensory faucets were a first for a private club at the time. The STARCK had a way for people to hide. Nooks and crannies were all over the place. The bathrooms were just one of many places in which to hide.

Description: We all remember the famous social spot... the unisex restrooms! I once used the stall... for privacy!... and "tripped out" with the video screen up above the stall door! LOVED the circular seating area AND all those mirrors! Classic!

Cory helped decorate the club for Halloween one year. Thinking it was 84 or 85. We all helped decorate the place. Second to last pic of the guy in front of the casket is of Frank Gonzales (I think that is his last name). Frank was a good friend to me during my Starck years. The last pic is Cory.

Feb 08, 2007 | 10:04 pmThere is a great video about the history of X on www.youtube.com it is called ecstasy rising. And guess what? it includes a documentary about Starck club in Dallas! it brought back a lot of good memories from those glorious days. Here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt6PHhOZ32g
I have most of the songs from the Stark era, and still listen to them, and never seem to get tired of them. the music sounded so good back then. It had so much more emotion to it. hope you guys enjoy the video.
-
Feb 08, 2007 | 11:52 amI remember back in those days I was in TX going to college in Houston. I will never forget that time of my life. everyone was so friendly, everyone was wigging, and the X was so good.. I have seen a lot of people interested in music from those days, and I would like to share all those songs with you guys since I have a few hundred of those songs in mp3 format. All the classics for sure. No matter how much I listen to them I never seem to get tired of them. you can download them from me in soulseek. www.slsknet.org my user name is: M_Revival
I would also be interested in trading with someone that has tunes I am missing.

Feb 03, 2007 | 8:22 amKevinH, send me an email and I will try to get you a list.
-
Feb 02, 2007 | 3:09 amAurora Beam,
Would love to get some of those tunes in digital format. I have some of the vinyl's, bit time has not been too kind to most of them....
Thanks,
Kevin

Jan 28, 2007 | 7:05 amSeems those on this list aren't the only ones that wax nostalgic. John Galliano just used Madame Butterfly in his couture show for Dior.

Jan 28, 2007 | 7:02 amHere is the link to the Starck Club scene in the movie RoboCop. It's on YouTube.com. The Starck Club scene starts at 7 minutes and 45 seconds into the clip and lasts for about a minute. Here is the link. The neon was added specifically for the movie. The Starck Club did not have any neon in the interior. http://youtube.com/watch?v=VidRzfbRkKI

Jan 27, 2007 | 6:58 amIf anyone is interested in the complete list of Starck Club music, let me know and I will try to add all of the songs as time permits. The Starck Club playlist is over 400 songs that were in rotation or distinctive to Rick's style. Most are remixes that were available only on vinyl. Some songs had many remixes, but Rick only played one particular mix. The archive of Starck music was transferred to cds. If anyone is trying to remember a song, let me know and I will try to help figure out the song and artist name. Leave a comment or email me at aurora_beam1980s@yahoo.com Peace and goodwill to everyone. More later.
-
Jan 27, 2007 | 5:38 amYes, The Starck Club is in RoboCop, the first one. But you have to see it with the DVD because when they broadcast RoboCop on TV they always edit out the Starck Club scene to make the movie fit the TV format. The commercials always cause a handful of minutes to be cut out. Nice shot of the dance floor "pit".
-
Jan 27, 2007 | 4:54 am...and don't forget you can always go rent ROBOCOP to see the staircase and dancefloor of Starck. It was filmed here in Dallas in 1986. You might see some familiar faces, there is a really awesome crowd shot as Robocop goes down the stairs towards the cold bar.
-
Jan 27, 2007 | 4:08 amI don't know where to start. With my stories or who I've seen since the Starck Days. I remember when I left Dallas in 87', I made plans to go back to Dallas for every Starck Club event. My friends would pick me up at DFW and away we would go. Straight to the Starck, up all night, back to Starck, then catch a plane back to LA... There I was; Bob at the door, with his clipboard.(I ran into him a couple of times in LA and SF). Val in the coat room, Dancing anywhere, the girls, "o" the girls, what a d*** dickie was (only at the club, great guy on the street). The cold bar, Lights up and "dance across the floor" until the glasses where picked up. Danny behind the bar with the water! Dallas, what a place back then, 75frwy, 12pm, 100degrees, headed downtown!

Jan 27, 2007 | 2:20 amOne last comment about what Madonna music was played at the Starck Club. A cover song of "Holiday" did receive a lot of play. It was a groovy kind of rap cover song called "Holiday Rap" by M.C.Miker and DeeJay Sven. A great song and a cool party song.
-
Jan 24, 2007 | 2:55 amFOR THE RECORD: An earlier discussion questioned whether any Madonna songs were played at the Starck Club. Three Madonna songs were played at the Starck Club. Although not played frequently, they were played at some point. Most are remixes. They are "Holiday", "Into the Groove", and "Material Girl".

Jan 16, 2007 | 3:40 pmfun times, never to be repeated. nice to see names i knew, names i heard.
the story of grace jones sticking her tongue down the teenage boys throat was a crack up. the same happened to me at the "last party" in 89. and that was the most innocent thing that happened on stage that night.
glad you piped up sita. you brought the magic to dallas. somewhere i still have a video tape that george baum gave that had the "i can't dance at starck club" video; a video by philippe, the original dj; david and his wife doing "i think i love you." the best though was starck himself saying, with construction crews behind him, "i think it will be very interesting to see who the architecture brings." yes it was truly interesting to see who the architecture brought to the party.
-
Jan 13, 2007 | 5:00 amP.S. Even today the two Starck songs that get me the most are "Madame Butterfly" by Malcolm McClaren and "My Male Curiosity" by Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
If you don't remember here are the opening words to "My Male Curiosity" written as accurately as I can hear.
"I can't deny we had some good times.
We would ride a bike built for two.
But I can't lie to you.
The rumors coming through. Oh.
Another girl's arousing my (woooo)
curiosity.
Another girl's arousing my (woooo)
curiosity.
And there's not a thing I can do.
I thought my ways would change around you.
I was wrong. I can't be tamed.
It's been a pleasure loving you.
But now the pleasure's through. Oh.
Another girl's arousing my (woooo)
curiosity.
Another girl's arousing my (woooo)
curiosity.
I can't deny we had some good times.
Hanging out without a parachute.
But if I stay with you
I'll have to cut myself in two. Oh.
Another girl's arousing my (woooo)
curiosity.
Another girl's arousing my (woooo)
curiosity.
And there's not a thing I can do.
Aurora Beam says much love and good memories to everyone.

Jan 13, 2007 | 4:21 amHi Sita. Hi everyone. This is John, the tall guy who wore a black sport coat and ran the lights for about 18 months at Starck and lived with Rick the DJ. I was the one with the "Bryan Ferry" haircut. I first posted a comment Sept.23. It's hard to explain to anyone who never went to Starck how much we loved being there and how devoted we were to this amazing place. Sita created something really awesome that will never be repeated. People really dressed up back then. The club, the music, the fashion, the awesome facility was love at first site. I never wanted to miss a night doing lights and being there. I have every remix and song that was played at Starck, around 350 songs. All were transferred from vinyl to CD and then loaded into my Ipod. Lately I have been playing all the old songs from Starck and then came across this site in the middle of my reminiscing.
Starck will never be repeated. People have changed, music has changed too. The beauty of the Starck Club will always be one of a kind.
There are a million things to talk about. But one thing that struck me the first time going to Starck was how people danced anywhere. At couches, in walkways, shaking on the railings. Dancing wasn't confined to the dance floor. People were doing this hop type dance in place too. Everyone dressed up. It was like magic. Sita created something that bordered on the divine.
I loved being there, and even after 20 years can remember how Starck was the perfect escapism for me and how I wanted to stay there for ever.
Does everyone remember how the last song of the night was "Only You" by Yaz? Occasionaly Rick would play "Mr. Sandman" last too. Or, remember the "Cotton Eyed Joe" would be played during the night and all these Duran Duran looking people would square dance for those few minutes.
Briefly "I'm losing you" became a big song. It was the song that started with the air raid siren that went up and down about 5 times. Remember the short-lived fad of twirling white handkerchiefs and wearing long strings of pearls while dancing? Remember how all guys buttoned the top button of their shirts? Remember the brooches that were adorned at the top of guys shirts?
Much goodwill and good memories to everyone. More later.

Jan 07, 2007 | 1:47 pmAhh yes, the Starck was a wonderful place to visit. Being a poor college student at North Texas kept me from attending as much as I would have liked. Jan 07, 2007 | 6:34 amGuy England, yes that was his name...this is Toie, I live in Ocala, Florida now, was just in Dallas over the Holidays. Guy was such a sweet person. he and I shared an apartment for a while off of Cedars Springs Blvd and then he kinda dissapeared from the apt and left some of his things (didn;t have much) and then didn't hear from him for a while and then I heard he was successful in his second attempt at suicide. It was soo sad.
I just love looking back to those days. Anyone ever want to stay in touch, my email is
ntoie@netscape.net
Also I would be interested in a Starck shirt if anyone still has any extra...
Wow, what memories...Ive been looking for Richard Forsythe as well if anyone remembers him.

Jan 04, 2007 | 9:06 amWow, I've spent (not wasted,) 20 minutes at work reading this and remniscing about my greatest club times in the 80's.....THE STARCK!
I was fortunate enough to dance with Stevie Nicks one night. Of course I always danced with the wall grate at the bottom of the stairs. I just can't explain this place to my 20 and 30- something friends today.

Jan 04, 2007 | 7:31 amA friend of mine sent me the link to this blog. It's great to know that so many people remember the Starck as such a pivotal time in their lives. I was 18 in 1984 when I was first taken to Starck. The drinking age back then was 19 and I looked my age, but I managed to get past Bob or whoever was working the door at the time. The next 5 years were spent in a party and after-party stupor. Cocaine, XTC and Crystal were the drugs that kept parties going, sometimes for days on end. Good times indeed. I moved to NYC shortly after Starck had died out and kept the partying going there for a few more years. Despite the craziness and amazing clubs and parties around NYC, nothing quite compared to the nights spent at Starck. I recognize a lot of the names mentioned here and some of the people posting. I'd like to shout-out to the following peps; Matt Musial, Missy Eben, Denise McMahon, Shawn Childress, Vaal, Fatima Aguirre, Don Lingo (r.i.p.), Brent Suen, Ellis Aklin, Micheal Dyess, Dee Dee D., Natalie (aka Iman) Kates, Kaleen Lemmon, Tracey Olsen, Giles, Mary XTC, Karen Finley, there are so many more...

Dec 28, 2006 | 8:26 amDoes anyone remeber The Dead Elvis videos that were played in the downstairs bar? I also remeber Grace Jones spinning upside down on her thrown w/ the roses! What a night that was. Has anyone heard from Vaal. Last I heard she was in LA? Also...does anyone have any Starck shirts for sale?
I hear that Starck is doing House of Yoo in Dallas. Im in California now and need to be informed.

I am assuming then that you knew Tonne O? She is the only one I kept in touch with but haven't seen in years. I need to give her a ringy-ding to see whut up?
I found a bunch of songs on Urge. Since I have a subscription on that I downloaded a bunch to listen to. I also found a cd with I'm losing you not too long ago.
I think I knew a Bill. Don't know if it was W or not? I think the Bill I knew also had a sister that hung out with us.
Still looking for those darn pictures....
-
Dec 21, 2006 | 7:29 pmRonnie, are you still in Texas? I moved back to SF after the Club, hardly ever go back to the big D... Wow. my memory is fuzzy, but I want to remember those times you said you were at my house by the pool. I really Loved David H, (miss him) and the way he did my BIG hair! I'm gonna look for some photos of he and I, I have a bunch and post them. Was listening to some of the old music tonight: it always puts me in such a phenomenal mood: flashback to those good old days.

Dec 20, 2006 | 9:15 amSorry for the typos - trying to type fast before my boss comes!!
-
Dec 20, 2006 | 9:12 amMy friend Big Mike let me know about this site. I love it! Its hard to explain to people who where never there what it was like. They just don't get it. I remember meeting Curtis and Hank in the men's bathroom - what a great place to hang out. I agree with the comments above - it was really a family. I remember laughing when Roderick was turning away some "bow heads" (SMU) at the door - shining a flashlight on there white pumps and just shaking his head no. Also fun to watch the newbies fall over in the chairs when they leaned back. Why can't we organize a reunion somewhere in Dallas? The music and people would be awesome. Anyone remember Don Lingo?
-
Dec 20, 2006 | 3:25 amtb_surf,
I would not be a bit surprised if Bill's Records would still have some of these tracks laying around or certainly be able to get them for anybody serious about it !

-
Dec 17, 2006 | 6:05 pmhi Peter, Yes I have a whole cassette box of tapes I made, mixes. I put a piece of coloured tape on the top of the whole set so I could make sure that they stayed inchronological order. They are in storage, along with a bunch of t-shirts. Sometime after the New Year (after the 2nd week of Jan) I could go looking for them and we can talk... Where do you live?
I'm outside SF.

Dec 15, 2006 | 5:17 amHey PeterP....(Tom) now "Jerid" lives in Dallas last I heard, but this after living in CA, and Seattle for a few years. Tom and I were in Design School together, it was he who introduced me to the "Starck Club" in 1985. Ronya last I heard was in SF and has lived there for several years and is married I think. Randy from what I've been told is here in Los Angeles w/ me, however I have yet to find him. I moved to L.A. in 1988, and joined Tom, Ronya, and Randy along w/ others to get crazy in CA and we did. Eventually we all lost contact w/ each other, but I am quite sure they recall those crazy nights at the "Starck Club", as I do. BTW, if you are the same Peter I remember from way back then, I must admit I had a secret little crush on you. Take Care.
-
Dec 14, 2006 | 4:17 pmRick also used to play "Last Dance " to close out.
-
Dec 14, 2006 | 4:17 pmSooo . . . I have to ask - did anyone else here ever make friends with Bill W.? And is anyone else still here in Dallas?
-
Dec 14, 2006 | 1:58 pmChristina, Sita the closing song was "Only You" by Yaz.
-
Dec 14, 2006 | 1:43 pmChristina YOU HAVE ACTUAL MIX TAPES RECORDED FROM A NAK DECK? If you are willing, we could have someone burn a couple of those to disk and broadcast on the web, if you are interested email me at PGPWI@aol.com and I can find someone to take care of that for you. What a treat it would be to have the actual live mixes played. I've commented here on two accounts pman and PeterP (this web site is a little screwy). Of course I'd love to pay you a fortune for a t-shirt. Mine have long since been washed to death.
Cabreezer you mentioned Tom, Randy, Ronya - - crazy kids, some of the first I partied with at the Starck. Had a crush on Tom and Randy.
-
Dec 12, 2006 | 12:21 pmWe lost a couple of our starck buddies over the years. Ken (Zoe) & Guy. So sad. :(
-
Dec 12, 2006 | 12:19 pmHey Sita!!!
By any chance you still have any of those recordings and t-shirts you want to sell to me????
I would love you forever!!! :)
-
Dec 09, 2006 | 1:04 pmOn a sadder note: I knew Rick passed away, but Mike DuPriest! that's a shocker... Also, our original DJ - from Paris - wonderful guy - Philippe Krootchey died as well... He had a funeral at Pere Lachaise cemetary, where all the biggest (Chopin, Mozart, Beethhoven and... jim Morrison) are buried. Edwidge and all the frenchies were in attendance. Sad... here's to the living, hats off as to how we all made it through, a minor miracle. But when you're young, the night is made for dancing!
-
Dec 09, 2006 | 12:56 pmYes, that was a great look, and good use of the linens. Who remembers Rick's signature last song of the night, for years? a sweet slow song after all that dance, dance, dance music. answer: Only You.
-
Dec 09, 2006 | 6:34 amHah! I just remembered the fact that we would carry around those Martini glasses and have the long white napkins hanging down and would dance with them.
-
Dec 09, 2006 | 6:30 amOh my God, this is too incredible. I wish we had more pictures of that time. Cuz the memory is failing in some ways.
"RADRICHARD" this is Toie Nicolini...Id like to know which Richard this is.I have my suspicions. Please contact me at ntoie@netscape.net
Oh yes I remeber being on the so called "guest list" and being a very well known socialite, so-to-speak. Had so much fun and really it was the only place that fitr where I was emotionally at that time, which was pretty screwed up. But all in all I would say Stark helped me out of some difficult times and I had friends who were experiencing the same kind of outcasting from family and society. So we all just had fun back then. I wouldnt trade that time for the world.
I just wish I could reconnect with some of the people I hung out with. It was of course pre-email time and no disposable cameras, and most people were in their transient state so would be hard to track anyone down unless they were on this site or another like it. I remember Grace Jones, and her showing off her "no t***" look, Partying with the Thompson Twins after, in the hotel. I worked at Confettis at the time (was probably the most famous waitress there-French Maid costume) and decided since my boss wasnt going to let me off for the evening I would just go and of course got fired and then spent all my evenings at the Stark, Mistrals, Babys etc...different night/different club. Which ever one was the place to go on that night. Always end up at Stark. Boy have times changed. Last one of my kids just went off to college and now living in Florida!
I remember Hutch, Big John and Dickie!!, Roderick was my "stand-in boyfriend" he wanted to be more. Shaunte. I really miss Big John and Dickie we always ended up at their house. So many names so little space. Please contact me if youd like to recall the past. If anyone remembers me or has gotten contact info from anyone. I would love to touch base with all.

Dec 08, 2006 | 9:37 pmI forgot to mention (was a long time ago) that then I mostly went by my club kid - queen of the night - hindu dancer nickname: Sita.

Dec 08, 2006 | 9:24 pmHi y'all, Starck fans, got much more to say and would love to be in touch with some of you. Ronnie Bruno, I can't wait to listen to the music you posted. I'm gonna e-mail you tomorrow... The music we played was the best! and it was all about the dancing: you can bet that anyone who was a dancer was on my list. Such a great flashback, all the energy in that Club! I was right there: dancing ALL night long!
-
Dec 08, 2006 | 9:09 pmAmazing! I am sooo happy to come across this! I was Blake's partner, I brought Philippe Starck to the deal, built the Club, my offcial title: conceptual engineer, and was a night manager from 84 (May 12 1984 - remember the opening?!!) to 92, when we sold it. BEST years of my life! got a ton of t-shirts still. Most importantly I made all night recordings for years (the early years - Rick's music) off our Nakamitchi. Oh yea, I loved those times! the light-board: spent years in front of that thing, with Rick, holding court. Grace Jones' manager showed me the ropes.
-
Dec 06, 2006 | 6:48 amOh yeah if you got a t shirt at the last new years party 1988, I was one of the two guys (David Hayes was the other) handing them out as everyone left the club. That was fun!
-

-
Nov 30, 2006 | 7:00 amThank you, Thank you Ronnie...This is what I had hoped for, a way to "listen back" to those days...
-
Nov 29, 2006 | 2:57 pmRonnie,
Great podcast!!!
I can see myself on the stairs trying to spin 360 in one move, and that would be a fast move...
Grace Jones, has to be my favorite... I remember one of her concerts where as the lights came up she was upside down in the rotating chair... singing “Slave to the Rhythm” … and I was every time I entered that place…
I still have a bunch of extended play vinyl’s that are “Starck Music”
Craig was my bartender… he kept me on his guest list…
The Starck was a landmark for my friends and me… We started and finished our nights there…
Thanks for the memories
-
Nov 27, 2006 | 9:39 amHey Ronnie, What a great podcast!
I still spin alot of that stuff at The ChURcH(Lizard Lounge)every Sunday night! Section 25, Dominatrix, Malcolm Maclaren... That was awesome!
What is that first track?? It starts out very ambient with just her voice...I love it!
-
Nov 27, 2006 | 4:23 amDJRonnie- Thank you sooo much for compling the podcast of music. I am listening to it right now and it is awesome!
-
Nov 26, 2006 | 6:52 amAlright now, no STARCK page would be complete with out thank you's to these old skool. Michael Dyess, Frank Meador, the gorgeous Dee Dee Knoche and the skinny girl that ran about with electrical tape in the form of an "x" on her tiddy's...oh yea, that was me. I have some photos to dig up for here...
-
Nov 25, 2006 | 8:27 amOMG I remember Petee (or Peedee) too. Hung out with Ben who wore creepers! What happened to Lisa? We called her Mabelline Lipstick.
-

Nov 24, 2006 | 6:06 pmThere were quite a few cute little underage girlfriends in those days weren't there?
I was one of the 'of age' girlies that hung around. Not really anyone's girlfriend so to speak. Many thought that my friend (another female) and I were a couple. LOL!
I had to get serious about school so I had to vacate the Starck scene. I ended up married with 2 teenagers now that can't imagine me being anywhere near being cool at any point in my life. Typical suburban wife now with a love of high fashion and the finer things in life.
I think I still have a Starck t-shirt somewhere in the back of my closet and a matchbook or two.
I can't believe I remember this but I actually remmebered Shaunte's compadre, Petee! He was a hoot. Oh my- how I loved my Starck friends. Those were the days...
-
Nov 22, 2006 | 1:47 pmI was Rod's underage girlfriend - Amy. Although I would change my name depending on Peewee's playhouse word-of-the-day.... I remember some of those names mentioned above...And everything else - glasses breaking, dancing with the bartenders, slipping on pills in the cold room...A cocktail of acid, x, and blow - how did we survive? I'm clean now but still follow dj's like grouppie...
Wouldnt change a thing...
-
Nov 21, 2006 | 10:36 amI seemed to have lost, or had my buddies steal, the last of my Starck shirts many years ago...Last one i remember was the one with confetti on the front..Last year issued, I believe ! Craig was my favorite bartender...He was a crazy-a** !
-
Nov 21, 2006 | 6:25 amLatch--Yes, I still have several of the t-shirts. I managed to keep a hold of the New Year's 1986 (into 1987) and 1987 (into 1988). I also have one of the black/gold sweatshirts. I'm not sure I could frame them, though--I still wear them!
-
Nov 21, 2006 | 6:10 amDo anyone of you recall the following names ? Missy Eben, Marty Spears, Tom Miller, Conrad, Mary Flores, Ronya, Randy, Tommie Dorn, Jack Morgan, and Tod, these are the peeps that I would run around w/ in those days.
-
Nov 21, 2006 | 3:21 amHow many of you still have Starck T-Shirts that were given to you on special occasions (i.e. New Years Eve, Anniversary Parties, Grace Jones' Ultimate Fete, etc.)? Several of them I never even wore but I did collect them. If you have any, here's what I did with mine and you might want to consider doing this also. I put 9 of mine in frames made for t-shirts. They look great on the wall and constantly remind me of those great days! So, dig them out of your closet...
-
Nov 20, 2006 | 5:10 pmHey Tbsurf- were you Darryl's underage blonde girlfriend? If you were, then I think we knew each other. How weird is that?
-
Nov 20, 2006 | 5:05 pmOh yes! Shaunte was her name. She was awesome. How can you guys remember this stuff? I must dig out the old photos to add. I hope I can find them!
Was Michael the one with the hair that fell over the front of his face? I remember HIM well... :)
-
Nov 20, 2006 | 3:42 pmI wish the days of $ 375.00 rent were back. The black lady made reference to, could it have been Shaunte'? She would dye her short crew cut bright red w/ powdered cherry flavored kool-aide, she secretly disclosed this to me. She was way too cool in those days.
-
Nov 20, 2006 | 1:38 pmDanny(had a stripper gf from million dollor if i remember-right) and Michael were my bartenders-always ran a tab with a Credit Card--these 2 guys were alway good if caught in a pinch for a biscit-they would just add it on the tab as a tip-cash out -and got their money lol. hell i remember over $100 tabs-(just me ) some nights-1985 dollars! apt rent wasnt but about $375-in those days lol Rock Me Amadeus rock rock rock
-
Nov 20, 2006 | 12:38 pmI don't think I ever had a chair incident. I remember breaking I don't know how many of those famous crystal starck glasses by tipping them over on accident. oops! I made it out of there with a few under my billowing clothes. shhh- please don't tell anyone. :)
I also remember sitting in the couches watching the newbies trip on the steps halfway through the club right next to the dance floor hole. That was great fun!
My memories are really spotty but I think the trash disco birthday party was for Bob not Rodrick?
I also remember a really cool chick that worked at the shoe store at the west end? Very tall gorgeous black lady- anyone remember her name? I remember Danny, Denise, Darryl, Michael, maybe more names will pop into my head as I ponder...
-
Nov 20, 2006 | 6:33 amMe too ! I remember sitting on the edge and the chair flow out from under me, and a girl w / a big yellow hat asked if I was okay. Forgot that incident till someone brought it up.
-
Nov 19, 2006 | 5:21 pmpss - i remember busting my a** in those damn starck chairs....
-
Nov 19, 2006 | 5:19 pmWhat a trip. A blogg about the Starck Club...I am surprised we have enough brain cells to remember it....
Funny how that place made everyone feel like a celebrity and made the staff like demi-gods.
I can't remember all the friends names i had back then but i remember loving you all very much!
i was 16 and use to wear a batgirl outfit...funny.
does anyone know where val is?
p.s.Madam Butterfly was my favorite song...
-
Nov 14, 2006 | 5:51 amAnyone remember Rodrick's trash disco birthday party???
-
Nov 14, 2006 | 5:47 amI can't believe I stumbled on to this as well. Great memories!
I had forgotten so many details. It was all a blur. After reading all the comments some names, faces and events have started to surface from the dark depths of my brain.
I was actually trying to find the names of some of the songs that were played for my son's 18th birthday party (ACK- I feel old!).
I am going to have to find some of the pictures I took during that time to post. I have no idea where I hid them so the kids would not see them. LOL!!!
Anyone remember Tonne & Guy? Ken (Zoe)? What about Yvette? There are so many more. After more coffee I will post more.
C Ya my starkie buddies!!!

Nov 06, 2006 | 3:46 pmThat photo of Rick is from my website. I put up a site as a tribute to Rick and a few other friends in the industry who have passed away at http://ped111251.tripod.com/ and it was a friend of his from back in the day, Karen Kennedy (she used to run a record pool down there in Texas) who pasted those photos together as a tribute to him after we learned he had passed away.
As far as the music and me begging for mixtapes, the MAIN thing we are trying to do is to educate new DJs. Best way to do that if the DJ is no longer with us, through his mastery of their music and how it's programmed. Its not so much that I want to archive it, bad choice of words, but I want to share the talent with a newer generation that doesn't know any better. We are the first generation of DJs and I feel its up to us to be responsible and pass this stuff on. It is up to us to define the history and allow those who want to learn the opportunity.
People on the East Coast talk about Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Tony Humphries from back in the day. And here 20 years later you all are still talking about your experiences in this one club. WOW!
-
Nov 05, 2006 | 3:58 amyes, Ronnie Bruno ... i do remember Blake and his mom! She became the "fly in our buttermilk" when around. (a joke much more hilarious when under the influence ... and aged 20).
and, Miss ya, 'warm leatherette' ... 'want better x' - that's so funny! That reminds me of my older brother when the old disco song came out "Rollercoaster". He swore it said "Nova Scotia" ... yes, that hot party capitol of Canada. 11/ 5 / 06
-
Nov 03, 2006 | 12:30 pmHee. I thought "warm leatherette" was "want better x."
-
Nov 02, 2006 | 8:57 pmBeen thinking about the STARCK a lot lately, did a search and WOW what a find. All you ppl here and the memories shared. God I love the internet! Remember TANGELLA? She was hilarious and later did drag at the post-STARCK night spot, EMPIRE. I met DAWN at the door through Lee Nail (who had the bisquits) so I would finish spinning at Big Daddy's on Cedar Springs and run down to STARCK. Left such an impression on me as a 19 year old country boy from Wichita Falls. Anyone remember Sita DeLimur, David Hayes (long blonde hair), Blake Woodall & his mom would go around policing the place. LOL. Good Times. Madame Butterfly by Malcolm McLaren was huge and (I Know) I'm Losing You by Uptown got its start at STARCK and became a huge radio hit. RIP Oak Lawn Records 1981-2002. The music you dance to...
-
Nov 02, 2006 | 9:10 amThat photo of Rick is awesome, especially the one with him leaning on the turntable, headphone draped over his shoulder and that grin under the moustache....11/2/06

Oct 30, 2006 | 2:56 pmHere's the date of this posting: Oct 30, 2006
-
Oct 30, 2006 | 2:12 pmwow. I've just had a contact high reading all these incredible entries. I wish I could see all your faces. I'm sure we all know each other. I have often mentioned how my life changed because of the Starck Club (as sad as that may sound). Yes, Dale at the door. The love on the dance floor (and stairs where Charlie and I would dance for hours). Grace Jones' birthday party in the cold bar .. her "cake" was composed of numerous chocolate cupcakes stacked high each with a candle). and the music ... yes, the music. Holiday, s-express, warm leatherette (which I swore said "war another rat" ... don't ask. But I have to say I still like that much better. Tell me more all! Ok ... i'll ask about a list of people ... do you know them? If so where are they now. Tina Smith, Perry Smith, Paul Layne, Charli (awesome girl), Lisa Burnett, Chris Brown, on and on.
-
Oct 25, 2006 | 12:09 pmBigPoppa--the thought of our music being in an archive (archivable?) is making my head spin. That, and turning forty this year, have done me in. When did I become respectable? "We ain't never gonna be respectable . . ." (Mel & Kim) used to be my anthem . . .
-
Oct 24, 2006 | 11:27 pmOh yeah I remember Big John and Dickie the waitrons and Edwige at the front door, seeing Prince and Grace Jones there twice in fact we partied together downstairs after hours with ex-Mgr Chris and Wade and all the owners. She and I were SO sh*t-faced that night we just kinda stared at each other. The night the heater got left on all afternoon and before it could cool off the people poured in and it stayed about 110 degrees in there all night? My 5 foot girlfriend stayed on my shoulders much of that night to watch Grace sing. Remember the Nina Hagen/Lene Lovich PETA event? The snobs in the crowd were too cool to applaud so they only did like one song which I think was New Toy. The Music came on for Savages (an awesome song as well) and since no one applauded they didn't sing to it. Remember OOOOH YEAH by Yellow? Remember Propaganda's P Machinery?
I was on the A-list because I was "early goth" or metrosexual even though I was straight. I don't think I EVER paid a cover or stood in line. I remember all the hidden spots behind curtains in the corners where you could "party" if the bathroom lines were too long or I could go back into the employees bathroom in the "kitchen", remember when they had food for awhile? It was great too! I used to go upstairs with both big Johns and Wade, Chris and all the others and party in teh storage rooms or downstairs in the coolbar area. Remember everyone saluting during Nemesis or hanging onto the wire mesh on the walls to dance? My ex-GF Toie Nicolini claimed she invented that Salute at Confetti (remember Monday nights there!)
I remember seeing Book of Love there with 2 girlfriends as we downed Long Island Iced teas all night or was it hurricanes?(you can imagine why THAT night was foggy). That night ended up memorable anyway for reasons I won't discuss here.
I still cherish my Starck Club T shirt with the big X on the front I got near the end. I went from 4 to 6 nights a week for awhile. Remember when people would go to Mistral on Tuesdays, Sparx on Wednesdays and Starck on any other day due to drink specials and promotions? There was also a pretty decent upstairs club in Lemmon whose name I forget with Lazers tracing all over the room. I took Cheap Trick to Mistral after their concert (which Rick Nielsen loved) and then on to Starck which Robin Zander loved better. That night was even more fun than partying with Depeche Mode! X-ing our asses off on New Years eve there in 93'/94' was the BEST NEW YEARS EVER!
A bunch of us would be at Clearview or various other clubs and come racing over to the Starck after the normal clubs closed. Remember there was that period for 20 minutes where they couldn't let anyone in at 2:00 AM?
Remember when they reopened it as DV8? Man that was kinda sad to see the club change like that with those faux brick walls.
SOMEWHERE I have a video of one of Donnie (Moda) Amireh's fashion shows I taped for him on the stage with Brooks Tuttle and all the other great dressers. Donnie got me to model once there too for a show. Remember hearing how Stevie Nicks got carried out drunk one night? Thankfully I wasn't there on Raid night but the "No dance" nights afterward were interesting. I SO loved those days and wouldn’t trade them for the world!
-
Oct 23, 2006 | 2:47 amBigPoppa,
That's awesome ! Hard to beleive that almost 20 years later the music from Rick and the Starck club live on !
-
Oct 20, 2006 | 3:06 pmJoeVirus, Kal and everyone else, please contact me about borrowing your mixtapes for a musical archive we are trying to do about the Starck Club and Rick Squillante. I am the record pool director in Seattle and can be reached through the http://www.nwdma.org site. Thank you.
-
Oct 17, 2006 | 9:03 pmWow ! I have no idea how old this thread is, but anyway I just read the whole thing and downloaded some legal Mp3's and I'm sooo suprised to see that you guys had such fond memories, (as myself), of the era and club. I was there from 86 - 88. It was a great experience and I'll never foget the first time I did the X and fell in love with everyone. It was drug induced, yet at the same time consciousness expanding sincere and changed me in a good way ! I used to throw huge afterparties at my place in a warehouse - Deep Ellum, on Commerce near Expostion Park, everyone still dancing till dawn. Sooo much fun and love AND I was there for Dead or Alive. I split my party time between Starck and Clearview and was a guest DJ a Clearview. Great sharing in the memories !
-
Oct 06, 2006 | 3:12 amAn important note to all from the site admin:
MP3 music sharing is illegal. Please, do not post requests or offers as they will be deleted.
Thank you.

Oct 01, 2006 | 10:11 am"The motorcade sped on" is about the JFK assassination. Seriously.
-
Sep 29, 2006 | 4:38 pmDOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE NAME SEAN SPRINKLE HE WAS A REGULAR @ THE STARCK HIS GIRLS NAME WAS JENNIFER SHE HAD CANCER
-
Sep 29, 2006 | 8:29 amJoe,
Yeah, that's the way I remember it...Started to type a couple of quotes, but they did not look "right" in these post-9/11 times....Lots of siren sounds, Oh No, Oh No...Motorcade rolled on...Oh, No
-
Sep 29, 2006 | 6:22 amWas that Motorcade song the one with all the news report samples in it?? Like Walter Kronkite and such??
-
Sep 28, 2006 | 10:17 amWow--someone else who remembers "And the Motorcade Rolled On." I actually have that on a cassette--along with many others. I found a stack of mix cassettes in my garage a few months ago. Madame Butterfly . . . Male Curiosity . . . I've been driving around having flash backs. I even found a mix from Baby's (!)
-
Sep 28, 2006 | 3:15 amLatch and Joe,
I had several mix tapes from those days, alas they have vanished, much like cassette players of that same era. I also used to visit Mistral, Sparxx and 2826, but none of those places felt like "home"...We always ended-up back at Starck...The Thursday and Sunday night crowds were the coolest and the Halloween nights were always very, very interesting !
-
Sep 27, 2006 | 9:49 amDon Quixote was one of my top three all time favorite songs that Rick Squillante used to play. I finally obtained a copy on a compilation CD through eBay from a seller in Europe. The other two that he would play late into the evening was "The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" by Dominatrix and "8:15 to Nowhere" by Vicious Pink. I used to love the constant echo effect that most of Rick's music had. The again, it was probably the 2.5 Disco Biscuits!!!
-
Sep 27, 2006 | 8:58 amDon Quixote was by Magazine 60. I stilll have it on vinyl!!
My wife has a cassette that one of the Starck DJs made for her back then. It has Tears For Fears "Change", Big Audio Dynamite, Art Of Noise "Legs", and many more.
-
Sep 26, 2006 | 10:14 amI just thought of a few tunes that I remember.
"The Motorcade rolled on"
"Don Quixote" ( Newspaper Taxi ?? )
Ahh hell, I forgot the third !
-
Sep 26, 2006 | 10:12 amOh my gosh,
Finally found a blog about the days of the Starck Club !! Yeah, I was there for many of those fine years. 85 - 90 ?? First time I went with my buddy Andy, Scott and Rochelle. I only got in because I was with them ! They had the look and it took me a while to find myself. Dale at the front door and Val were always cool. Our waitress Suzy always had a table reserved for our group and Craig knew how to make a wicked Turkey & Coke. Our group was comprised of many; Kimberly, Matt & Freda, Andy, Scott & Ro, and many others over the years. I still have a shoebox with flyers, photos and invitations for New Years for all those crazy nights...This is neat...Let's see if we can keep this going ?
-
Sep 23, 2006 | 5:05 amI have every song that was in popular rotation at the Starck Club. All the remixes included. Pages could be written about what an amazing moment in history this club really was. In the near future I will describe the scene in detail. It is a place and time and moment that will never be repeated. It is hard to describe the love that we felt for this place and the music. More soon.
-
Sep 05, 2006 | 2:59 pmWow! I just read this entire thing and had some seriously intense flashbacks! I was on the list for several years during the mid to late 80's. My best fried's brother worked the door, Dale Brasel. All these names, songs, photos are really wild. What an amazing, amazing, time!!!
-
Aug 31, 2006 | 9:41 amIt's a bit telling that no one remembers Edwige. She worked the door from the first day to the beginning of 1985. The Starck Club reported on this site is different from the Starck Ckub I know. When Starck first opened it's doors the atmosphere and attitudues were quite chilly. It was an expensive new nightspot that carried with it a certain European ambience. This had to do with the club's namesake as well as Edwige. Her selectiveness at the door was quite unique and strict. She was looking for attitude and (fashion) inventiveness. For every one person allowed in, maybe three were not. Stakes were high! There was very little comaraderie; it was every haircut for itself! But that was OK because it was the fashion obsessed early 80's and we were avid readers of The Face and i-D. I don't really recall any of the "screaming mayhem" as reported here. Yes, there were drugs but they were consumed in a more discreet fashion. Over all, I seem to recall Starck's early days as a sparsely designed nocturnal playground inhabited with trendy and narcissistic types too cool to scream or get too sweaty on the dancefloor. Of course, Starck did not remain like this (it would never have made any money), but in it's early incarnation it held a very different appeal. Alternative indeed!
-
Aug 31, 2006 | 8:21 amI saw the French band les Rita Mitsouko at Starck Club - tres cool! Also saw the Blow Monkeys and the 10th year anniversary show of the Village People and other live acts. Loved the themed Sunday nights - like the garage sale, stuff like that. It was a wild mix, wild times. Music was fantastic, there, and nothing compared to the Starck dance floor. Loved all of it.
-
Aug 28, 2006 | 11:55 amDoes not anyone remember starck's original doorwoman, Edwige? Tall, striking, Parisian ex-Gaultier model? She could be impossibly intimidating... she set the tone of what was to come! Where are you Royce?
-
Aug 18, 2006 | 6:06 pmI categorize my music and one genre is "Starck Music". I loved the curtains and sofas and the ladies room was a social gathering. The "stalls" (more of a small room than a stall) in the ladies room had tv's on the ceiling and a brick that pulled out of the wall. X was legal, life was good, and every stranger was your new best friend.
-
Aug 15, 2006 | 8:55 pmand yet more songs:
Marcia Baila;
P-Machinery;
Bach to the Future;
Hand on My Heart;
You Can't Help;
Robot Girl;
Heaven Help You Now;
....Set It Off.
I'll stop now.
-
Aug 15, 2006 | 8:47 pmwait.
PeterP already mentioned Georgie Red...so I was wrong about that..
In that case I substitute "Perfume from Spain" (Dr Calculus)..I still love that song.
-
Aug 15, 2006 | 1:10 pmfun reading all this!
I was there, too... from 86 to 89...love seeing the songs are remembered, but can't believe no one has mentioned
"If I Say Stop" (Georgie Red), or my favorite,
"Ich Leibe Dich" (La Dusseldorf).
-
Aug 01, 2006 | 9:22 pmDont forget:
Skipworth and Turner - thinking about your love
The Beatles (in the bathroom) - With you without you
Swing out Sister - Breakout
Amazulu - too good to be forgotten
New Order - Blue Monday
Paul Hardcastle - 19
Mantronix - Who is it
Kraftwerk - Pocket Calculator
Ann Clark - Hope Road
I still remember going up the side of the stairs so that Val, Dale or Bob would see me and my two best friends and let us in....some of you may remember the german girl with the short red hair who was/is stunningly beautiful, her boyfriend the tall blond guy who used to dress like John Taylor from Duran Duran, and then me - the chinese guy with the cowboy hat with safety pins around the brim and heavy black framed glasses...spinning out on X in the cold bar or dancing madly next to the "H"....
amazing times...*sigh*
-
Jul 31, 2006 | 10:10 amBoy, this site is a trip! I need to get out all my old vinyl (it's packed for a move). I used to get most of my vinyl from VVV records on Cedar Springs where they would have a lot of obscure and import music that the Stark Club DJ's would play. I remember most of what you all have typed in...I do remember Souxsie and the Banshees "Dear Prudence" and a very early Simple Minds tune called "Travelling"...loved those songs.
One of the first times I went there in September ,'85' I was one of a group that was one of the hundreds standing in line at the great steps in front of the building. The line inched along on that hot, humid night while the line to the far left moved very quickly for all the cool regulars. Robert was working the crowd and it all seemed very grandiose to me. Toward the top of the steps I turned to the crowd and loudly said "Would the Jones party of 500 come this way please"...hand gestures and all. I heard a booming voice annouce "You! You are not getting in tonight!" It was Robert and sure enough I pissed him off and didn't get in....got to know him later and was a real nice guy.....I just pressed the wrong button that night.
Got to know Rick Squillante from a party at a theater in Austin on Labor Day weekend 1985.....cool music with 1960's oil lights on the screen...very psychadelic!....anyway, a few friends and I would hang out with him in the DJ area at Stark. He would many times have a Barbie Doll spinning on the turntable with the music.
One time a bunch of us got in as we had just arrived from a Frankie Goes to Hollywood concert at the Bronco Bowl in a limo....I guess they thought we were groupies or something from the concert as we were dressed wildly and totally messed up. We were led out of the limo through the back door through a kitchen into the club where the wildness raged! From what I can remember we got free drinks and hors dourve trays the whole night!
I loved the club..it was very decadent and I haven't seen anything like it since. It was always cold....great for dancing and hot Texas nights. I would watch the different projected images on those white drapes and meet people on those huge draped white sofas behind them. The bathrooms with the glass block dividers and little TV's in the stalls were cool...you'd wait for a stall and a crowd would walk out of it after snorting coke. The men's room wasn't for the pee shy as many ladies would size a man up at the urinals lining one wall...the bathrooms were the first ones I had been to where both sexes could hang out in each other's designated restroom. Usually, with sufficient buzz and X I would go down those stairs into the dancing throng. I marveled at one 40 something woman in a chic, short black cocktail dress and how she climbed the the bars of those sidewall gates that protected the fluorescent tubes behind them....she just swung on that thing clattering the gates while dancing and swinging on them! After a long time of dancing we'd usually go to the cold bar and hang out...me doing Jaigermeister shots.....we grab at people through the small openings to the dance floor.....after awhile it was back to dancing or up to see Rick again. I'd be there until I can't remember....it was always great!
Wasn't there for the drug bust, but heard all sorts of pills were thrown on the dance floor in a mass frenzy to get rid of the stuff.....the place wasn't quite the same after that.....I started going to Deep Ellum more....went to Baby's as well....never went to Sparks...it looked a little cheesy to me, but heard they had good music.

Jul 09, 2006 | 9:05 amI'll never forget it! How could I, a 19 year old from Bunkie, LA (population 5K) attending college in Shreveport, LA and heading every weekend to the big city of Dallas Texas for the party experience of a lifetime. The Starck Club met my expectations and so many more. I was so fortunate to have been escorted by Starck Club regulars Peter Nintzel, Frank Gonzalez and Robert Nugent. They introduced me to Rick Squillante, we smoked with Roderick and I shared a tab with Sebastian (a bartender in the behind-the-scenes bars at the Starck). Momma Starck always a constant figure as were those latin dudes with the hair that stuck straight up.
I remember and loved all the music listed in above comments and wanted to mention some others.
"Modigliana" by Book of Love
"If I say stop" by Georgie Red (this song had an orgasm in the middle)
"I'm your man" by Wham
"Nemesis" by Shriekback (no one move a muscle as the dead come home)
"One Life" by Laid Back
"The Promise" by When in Rome
"Band of gold" by Belinda Carlisle
"Back in love again" by LTD
There was a song I was hoping you could help me find the name to with these clues: vocals were very diva, sound was pop/disco and lyrics I recall were "Cc..can't feel the rhythm"
Dancing on the stairs in a sea of strangers and friends totally blown away by Rick's selections and mixing is part of my memory forever. Folks experiencing the edge of life and loving it. Peace Charlie and Frank.

Jul 08, 2006 | 8:21 pmLisa K...I am sure we probably met at the house on Martel, but were too out of it to remember, all I know is the parties there were outrageous, not to mention all the other ones that took place in hotels around Dallas. The STARCK was my #1 one place to go to followed by BABY'S, Mistral's at the Leows Anatole, followed by Club Clearview in Deep Ellum. Sometimes we'd raid the OP or Village Sation which ever it was at the time just for kicks. At anyrate, must say, those were the days. Grace Jones...awesome ! Whatever happened to her ? Just bought Gwen Guthries'--Padlock...remember this song, it was also a big STARCK song in the early days, can't wait to hear it again. Also purchased Section 25. amd Heaven 17. I am going to have a mini STARCK night w/ friends here in L.A., should bring back some memories. Later
-
Jul 05, 2006 | 4:36 amCabreezer...I told you I was right there with ya and yes...even at the house on Martel. I remember several after parties there (well almost). Let's see...I remember the first time I saw Grace Jones in concert. She was spinning around in a high back chair and all over it. Then later she proceeded to come to the front of the stage and handed me a rose while singing La Vie en Rose. I remember it being extremely hot due to the A/C being cut off for Ms. Grace. I still remember the STARCK hip-hop dance...and how we would skip up and down the stairs while doing it. This picture of VAL...Really takes me back. I remember seeing Book of Love on my wedding night. And as for Karen Finley's "YAM JAM" aaaaaaaaaahhhh I remember it well. Take those Belgian Waffles and....!!!! LOVE IT!

Jul 03, 2006 | 3:37 amWhat a treat to see these photos. Val is a very unique person. I hope more photos will be added as more people find out about DiscoMusic.com. Spread the word! My friend "Big Girl" and I went to the Starck when they were selling anything and everything - curtains, sofas, chairs, champagne buckets, those big block coffee tables in front of the sofas, etc. Everything was up for grabs. We each bought one of the chairs ("Miss Dorn") in the photo above. BG also bought the "HOMMES" light fixture that shined on the door to the bathroom. Gawd I miss those daze on 2 and 1/2 !! For my dear friends Ross and Dail who are no longer with us: FEEL THE FASHION NOISE!

Jul 02, 2006 | 9:28 pmGwen Guthrie, Padlock!
-
Jul 01, 2006 | 8:45 amDoes anyone recall the lyrics to a song, "Padlocking my heart" who sang this.?
My additions to the songlist:
Adam Ant---Viva Le Rock,
Moskwa TV--Generator 7/8, Ice House--No Promises, Blancmange--Ave Maria, Magazine 60--Don Quichotte, Erasure--Sexuality, The Art of Noise--Legs, Love and Money--Candy Bar Express, The Art of Noise--Peter Gunn, New Order--Bizarre Love Triangle, Pete Wyle--Sinful, OMD--Secrets, Boys Don't Cry--I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Philp Oakey Giorgio Moroder--Good-by Bad Times, Depeche Mode--Just Can't Get Enough, and T'Pau--Heart and Soul...Now this was musci !!.

Jun 30, 2006 | 2:40 pmThose were the days. As referenced by another person, I've uploaded a photo of Val, the androgynous cigarette attendant (and so much more). The second person in the photo is a young lady named Fatima.
I would add a couple songs to the list... anything by the Bronski Beat; American Soviets- CCCP; New York, New York - Mcl; Headhunter - Front 242; Zoolookologie - Jean Michel Jarre; Andy - Les Rita Mitsouko; Im Nin'Alu - Ofra Haza; Theme from S'Express - S'Express; Dig It - Skinny Puppy; Love Vigilantes - New Order; and in the early days: Madam Butterfly - Malcolm McLaren; Rock It - Herbie Hancock; NY, NY and Universal Radio - Nina Hagen and Goldrush - Yellow. One I'll never forget (and you'll see why, if you can find it): Yam Jam - Karen Finley from Tales of Taboo.
Cheers!

Jun 25, 2006 | 7:46 pmATTENTION! ALL LOVERS OF THE STARCK CLUB...I am desperately searching for old mix tapes by Rick Squillante. I can transfer them to CD and of course would make a copy for you as well. New DJs do not understand the heritage and passion that these pioneers put into their shows and the only thing we have from some of them who have passed on is their music. PLEASE PLEASE feel free to contact me through this board in order to make arraignments at preserving the history of dance music and some of the great DJs from yesterday. Thank you.

Jun 21, 2006 | 11:27 amHey Lisa K.....Sorry to get you jonzin. Wow! haven't used that term in years. We definately are in agreement that the STARCK CLUB was the place to be in the 80s. I left behind my ghost of youth w/in the walls of the STARCK CLUB, and my youthful spirit stills dances the night away till 6 in the morning. My favorite place to dance was on the stairs holding onto the brass railings. I recall after parties at a house on a corner somewhere in Dallas on a street called Martel St., the parties there were awesome, and I remember seeing the neighbors come out to get the morning paper off their sidewalks, and there we all where still dressed to the hilt and still going at it.w/ no end in sight. I since have moved to Los Angeles and haven't been to Dallas to revisit the sight, I guess there is no need to, I have the memories inside and keep them very much alive. FYI I am Edward in the photo submitted above in the silver shirt I made myself. We should all be so fortunate to have experienced this place in time. Tell more Lisa K. of your experiences at the STARCK. Later
-
Jun 21, 2006 | 4:10 amCabreezer...I was right there with ya! STOP IT!! You're making me jones for the good ole days. (GOD I feel old!) Makes me want to go back in time. I remember so many fun times and some very over the edge moments. No other club has ever come close or compared to the STARCK. Too bad. So sad. I wish someone had more pictures but I guess we were all too busy drinking in the experience. It was an ERA no doubt.

Jun 20, 2006 | 7:53 pmHi to all, I often wondered if it was all a dream. The X the acid, the coke and whatever else I could get my hands on, even something called chocolate muskuline at $ 25.00 a bag. Wow ! what times I had there. The music, the friends and that great dance, almost still remember it. I have never again encountered such a grand era, those days are long gone, but the memories are as if they happened yesterday. Still feel like a star, just kidding! It was one of the best times of my life and I would give anything to have one night back in time at the Starck Club.
-
Jun 19, 2006 | 11:12 amOk...2 questions...AND some music info
1) What was the 2nd best club to go to besides Starck... Baby's? or Starx? I went to both but again...destiny never led me to Starck (perhaps some huge Karmic Debt on my part)
2) Speaking of Baby's... did anyone know about the girl that died there in '85 from X?
MUSIC INFO...
You can get Section 25's complete CD's @ CD Warehouse (Dallas)... it even has an awesome 12" version of Looking from the Hilltops as well as the original. Enjoy!

May 25, 2006 | 6:09 pmI remember going to the stark club for the first time and being kissed and hugged by at least 5 or 6 really hot girls that I had never met before. I think I got hugged by a few guys to. I remember criss and craig in the cool bar being my favorite bartenders and always doing tricks when they poured. I remember wiggin my a** off for hours untill 6:00 am, when they would tell all us vampires to go home. Then we would go to a after party at charlie and whitneys apartment. The one with the big X on the sliding glass door made with christmass lights. I saw dead or alive, Book of love twice. Mantronics and Grace jones. People would always get pissed at me for working their drugs. I mean messing with their heads. I remember saluting to shriekbacks nemisis. I did not go on the thurs. that stark got busted, however I did go the next eve. I remember Dale being really paranoid and checking everyones IDs. I remember city of dallas revoked starks dance licence for 3 weeks. They had dance police walking around with a banner on and keeping anyone from dancing. The club also made a video for this event. It was called why cant we dance at stark club video. I was also lucky enough to be there the night they made it and I am in one small section where we are all dancing down one of the isles above to the dance pit. Wish I could find that video. That place was bursting with energy and everyone would be woo-in and shu-in. That was the most fun I ever had at a club and met the wildest people, not to mention seeing celebrities there ocationally.

Apr 08, 2006 | 4:10 pmDoes anyone else remember Dickie, the waiter? I ran into him at a Target here in Dallas in 1998. He looked like he's never left the party. I was embarrassed to answer him when asked what I do now--I had to admit I'm a tax lawyer.

Mar 22, 2006 | 6:57 pmThe Starck Club in the 80's was IT -period. My posse and I have so many fantastic, wonderful, outrageous and memorable moments from our lives in this unforgettable time - No club, no era, nobody could ever replace or come close to this period of everlasting - transcendental experience. This was definitely a time frame that cannot be put into words - you had to be there and live it firsthand. I will never, ever forget my many nights at the Starck Club, the Door People, Val, The DJ's, the Music, the chained walls, the cold bar - and all of the stars. But truly - the stars were all around us - the savoir-faire and unity of mind/body/soul that everyone was involved with and enlightening of the mind at the same time with music that left impressions on lives forever. Thank you Starck Club for incredible memories and life altering experiences!
-
Mar 21, 2006 | 2:18 pmdoes anyone know how to get pictures from the starck club... that would be sweet.
-
Mar 09, 2006 | 7:13 amI was there the night Dead or Alive played. What an incredible night!! No one was let in for the longest time due to some technical sound problems I believe. It was a hot evening and the line to get in was massive. Of course, everyone's X was kicking in while in line and that was a hoot in itself. The crowd that night pulled out all the stops for Dead or Alive. I'm sure there was no eyeliner to be found in the City of Dallas after that night let alone black attire. There were still problems with the sound during the show but no one seem to mind or didn't know any better. It was sooooo much fun. Ms. Burns peed that night.

Mar 09, 2006 | 6:42 amI don't know how I stumbled upon this string of STARCK banter, but it's been a trip down memory lane. I spent every weekend at that wondermous space, grinding my teeth with the rest of you! If I weren't on the stairs STARCK DANCING, I could be found on the counter in the men's lounge or on the floor in the cold bar.
Key songs for me: Shake It Right by Six Sed Red, Take It Back by The Pookah Makes Three, The Visitors by ABBA, No Memory by Scarlet Fantastic, Madame Butterfly by Malcolm Mclaren, Tales of Tabboo by Karen Finley, Best of My Love by The Emotions, and when Rick would close the evening with ONLY YOU by Yaz. Buzzkill listed a bunch of pure classics as well.
Shows? Pepsi & Shirley, 10,000 Maniacs, Dead or Alive, Grace Jones...
We had just pulled up when the bust was happening...so we stayed in the car and headed to Baby's instead (whew!).
Rick S and Go Go Mike - RIP.

Mar 04, 2006 | 8:29 amAnyone remember Dead or Alive performing there?
-
Mar 04, 2006 | 12:07 amI never got to go to the original Starck Club because I moved here soon after it shut down. When the owners of The Lizard Lounge reopened it as Starck in 1998 I got to spin in the legendary club on the Voodoo Lounge night. I played Pet Shop Boys " It's a Sin", Peter Godwin "Images Of Heaven", Art Of Noise "Legs", and many more. It was a dream come true to spin in such a historical and beautiful club. I wish I had been there in the original days.
In 2003 or 2004 it reopened as Starck again, but with different owners, and it was a Latin/Hip hop club...
-
Feb 16, 2006 | 6:19 amI'm totally with you there Darren! It was the Studio 54 of our time and we were just at the right time to peak along with the STARCK CLUB era. As I mentioned before, I've often thought of writing a book about the time and how it changed my life. I met my now ex-husband there and until then had never considered dating black men. Does the name Kelvin Johnson ring a bell? Anyone?
-
Feb 16, 2006 | 6:07 amStrangely enough, the first time I went to Stark was when my father took me. I was only thirteen and his girlfriend did Grace Jones' make-up. I was there as she got ready, tried on bike shorts, and all... and then she gave me a rose and stuck her toungue way down deep into my teenage mouth. Two years later, still way undeage, I went with my friend Kevin. He was the first 'fierce' f***** I ever knew, and he could get us in anywhere. We were hella cute and dressed to kill. I'd never before encountered motion-detected water taps, and totally tripped out on the whole 'psychic' act of handwashing in the amazing bathroom. Had my first hit of X there, plucked from a fishbowl full of them on the cold bar. And all these years later, every time I hear 'Slave To The Rythm' or Eurythmics 'You HAve Placed A Chill...' I remember the majic of that place which was for me the beginning of so much. For a gay boy from Plano Texas with big dreams of NYC, the Starck was inspirational. Wishing lots of Light to everyone who lived loved and dreamed there all those years ago. - JSB

Feb 15, 2006 | 12:38 pmThe Starck Club. It really was "The" Studio 54 of the '80s. Being 19 in 1984 when the drinking age was 19, we were granted access to this amazing playground. Mid 1984-86 was its heyday. Even when it was happening I sensed it was something special and it was.
A ten dollar cover seemed outrageous but really was completely justified. Remember "Evije" the door hostess? Bob soon replaced her. Oh BOB. I wish I had time to elaborate fully but the stories and legends really are true. Remember when X became illegal on July 1st, 1985? I Was not there during the bust in August of 1986, I think it was a Thursday Night.
Wade, Bob, Craig, Val. And who could forget Rick S. and his choice for music. I heard The Pet Shop Boys for the first time there. Their remix of "Opportunities" was classic. Remember Uptown's "I'm Losing You". The long wailing "siren" reved everyone up. Who could forget hearing Book of Love's "Boy" and then "I Touch Roses"! Rock Me "Amadeus" File 13 and their "Tastes So Good" Just when you think you had heard it all Rick would drop ABBA's The Visitors and the place would go nuts.
I do hope someone would tell this story as a film and believe me they could. Even a music compilation would be wonderful. There will never be a time like this again! Ever! p.s.
Thanks for the memories

Feb 15, 2006 | 7:46 amDang I miss Rick S. We were always on his guest list. Followed him around from club to club. We actually left about 15 minutes before the raid, went to 2826 on the way we heard on the radio that Starck had been busted. Damn we were lucky. Other songs to remember
Harry By Off, Din Da Da - George Kranz, Blind Vision- Blancemange, Digging Your Scene - The Blow Monkeys, Rosebud - Sparks, Radioactivity - Laser , Cowboys, Let Me Go - Heaven 17 (Still Love that song), Exotica - Chris & Cosey, Al Naafish - Hashim,Voulez Vous... DAF, Don't Look Down - Torch Song, Kawliga - Residents, 19 - Paul Hardcastle, Dictator - Centerfold, Follow the Rainbow - Joe Machine, Looking from a Hilltop - Section 25, All The Animals come out at night - Secession, Love Missle F1-11 - Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Set it Off - Strafe, Lucifers Friend - Vision, If - Saturdays Angels, All & All - Joyce Sims, Change Your Mind - Gary Numan, Kiss me - Tin Tin Duffy, Wallies - Anne Clark, Break Away - Big Pig, Brilliant - Boytronic
At least thats all I can remember and have on my iPod.

Feb 12, 2006 | 3:50 pmA big "shout out" to all my former Dallas clubbers keeping the memories alive. No 80s war stories for now (as juicy as they are!) but here is a playlist of songs I'll always associate with my misspent youth at the Starck Club. Happy downloading!

Feb 09, 2006 | 8:34 amStarck was undescribable! We were on the door list, (thanks John) and got past the velvet ropes immediately on arrival, that was a rush, only to be swept inside where the music instantly grabbed you--now the real rush began! The bathrooms were bright and mirrored- people would just sit and gaze, lots of friends were made in the bathroom! I remember one night zoning out on a couch in the curtain area, and the lead singer for Berlln came in and sat on the couch across from us--we had been to the concert that evening and just struck up a conversation with her-- she said "great clubbbb" she was obviously grinding her teeth. I also remember the New Years Parties with Grace Jones "performing". And who can forget slamming OJ at the circle bar when 2am struck!
-
Jan 09, 2006 | 3:29 amCorrection - Sparks (on Lemmon). .. Curtis Kidwell and Ed Lynch did most of the dj work there (at that time). I remember hearing holiday played a few million times, hate that record.
-
Jan 07, 2006 | 8:01 pmWow Tim, do you feel like a part of history? You should d-jayed at Stark! Maybe you can help on a running bet I have with a friend. Was Madonna every played at Stark? He says no! Absolutely not! I say yes one song was "Holiday" any thoughs?
-
Jan 05, 2006 | 10:15 amThe song "Jolene" was done by Strawberry Switchblade. I had the opportunity to spin a little bit at Spark back in the day. I still have almost every record from that era.
-
Dec 29, 2005 | 6:28 pmIf the Starck Club had never existed, the Dallas club scene would not have been what it was. And it was fabulous and nothing less. The first time I went I remember waiting in line to be picked to come in( my friends had friends it didn't take long.) The coed bathrooms with couches in them and long mirrors made a lasting impression. I did the club scence for many years but I have to say getting married in a mass ceremony at the Starck was a first. The songs I remember are... Harley David Son of a b****, Madam Butterfly, I sit on acid, and a Brian Brain song I can't remeber the name of. Not to mention all of the other millions of songs that still play in the back of my head.
-
Dec 20, 2005 | 10:56 amRETRO LOVERS are alive and well! No worries here. Free Nelson Mandela was definitely amongst the familiar.
I remember so many bits and pieces from that time and had thought about writing a book about the whole experience but then I figure...who wants to read about an era past?
For those who think it was overated, I'd have to ask where the hell you partied and at what club you felt you fit in? I know STARCK was IT for me and the wonderful friends I made there. Right Latch??
-
Dec 20, 2005 | 10:02 amOverrated? How so? What was your club of choice in the 80s?
-
Dec 20, 2005 | 9:58 amThe cover of "Jolene" was song by the Strawberry Switchblades. I've never been able to get my hands on a copy. Other rarities include "Male Curiosity" by Joe and the Coconuts (I think) and Amazulu singing "Montego Bay." "Murderous Repetition, "Don't Leave Me This Way," Yaz singin "Don't Walk Away from Love,"and a lot of other songs from those days are actually available on i-tunes. Not Vicious Pink singing "C-c-c-c'ant You See," though. "Free Nelson Mandela," anyone? It's sad, but we're retro, y'all.
-
Dec 08, 2005 | 8:25 amThe Starck Club was way overrated.
-
Nov 26, 2005 | 1:41 pmOMG-nothing will ever compare to the Stark Club-yes i was there the night of the big bust-cops came in sealed off all doors-lights on-their police dogs slipping on Starks marble floors lol.Dale i remember at the door his Flock of Seaguls haircut-mustard color jacket/Danny a bartender had me on the list at the door"sweet",A few years back a starting collecting those(LP "12") tunes from the "Stark" days and have most of what i remember.if you came in early(before midnight)-the tunes were laid back Grace Jones, "Slave to the Rhythm" and Godley &Cream "Cry" was two favorites(I founds these LP a few years back) Dance tunes-Simply Reds "Moneys to Tight to Mention(long version) and Fine Young Cannibals"Suspicision Minds" were two of my favorite-but were so many.only one i have had trouble with is-a song it was a cover of Dolly Pardons "Jolene" i researched it on the net and found who did it a year or so ago-but lost my notes.awww yes The Stark Club-one and only
-
Nov 15, 2005 | 5:08 amIt was a way of life and an amazing club! Unfortunately it will never be repeated. DAMN IT!! I guess you only live once, right? I've often thought about writing a book of all the experiences I had but then I figure, who would buy such a book?
One thing I remember vividly was how everyone would be doing this certain dance...the STARCK DANCE. It was kind of a hip-hop, skipping, kind of move. Everyone in "the know" of X and STARCK knew what it was and just how to do it. I remember several nights of skipping through the club on X and dancing up a sweat only to go cool off in the cold bar. OJ anyone? Remember how Richard would hit that "HIGH NOTE"? One tune in particular, "I'm Losing You" would always work us into a feverish pitch! Somehow we never managed to break our legs as we jump-skipped effortlessly up and down the stairs, as if our lives depended on it. Remember the long strands of beads Latch?? How we would stand on the stairs and twirl them forever? What about seeing Grace perform in 100+ temperature? OH! Caliente LUPE!! I also remember a few times when I would be looking back at the stairs, peering across from Rick's angle and seeing a wall of hats, brooches, lights and beads! I'm just glad to know we survived it all. Loved the 80's!!!
-
Jul 28, 2005 | 6:31 amThanks Latch, I found a Vicious Pink website that has a brief sample of 8:15 to Nowhere. I had a little mini Stark flash back. What I wouldn't give to travel back to those days just for one more night at the Stark Club.
-
Jul 28, 2005 | 6:16 amThe song that I'm remembering had a load siren in the beginning and it was a cover song, an Elvis tone maybe?
-
Jul 15, 2005 | 2:12 amWendy, I would try eBay in your quest. As to the category the Starck fell into: definitely Trendy/Chic and New Wave -- not at all Punk or Prep. The Starck was a destination Club. Your whole evening was spent on getting ready to go only to that Club. We would get there around midnight or so complete with brooches, long satin smoking jackets/robes, eye liner for days, clove cigarettes, etc. etc. etc. For a very small taste of what it was like see the first RoboCop movie. A club scene in that movie was filmed at the Starck. L8R
-
Jul 14, 2005 | 5:55 pmA list of the songs would be awesome! I am now on a quest for the Dominatrix cut. * Ok... being a former New Wave 80's Gen Xer, I've GOTTA ask the million dollar 80's question... which category did you guys fall into @ Starck? New Wave? Punk? Prep? Trendy/Chic? etc., etc.?
-
Jul 14, 2005 | 2:27 amHello Bigmike and Wendy. There were two songs in particular that were "THE" songs 2 X 2 at the Starck: (1) "8:15 to Nowhere" by Vicious Pink and (2) "The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" by Dominatrix. I don't have any pix of the Club - they would have all come out blurred !! When the Starck closed (for good) they had a sale of everything in the Club. I managed to buy one of the Phillipe Starck chairs. I'll try to get a list of songs soon. Those were the daze !!!
-
Jul 13, 2005 | 4:27 pmSONGS: DITTO... I'd also like to know what songs were played---was there a song that was THE song to X too?
PICS: Does anyone have pics? If so, do share!
BUST OF 86: Was anyone there during the bust...see it go down?
-

May 29, 2005 | 2:04 pmStarck was a way of life!!! It was an extended family for individuals that didnt fit in anywhere else. X was legal and then when it wasnt you could get Eve......for a good EVEning call.....There was the bald cigarette guy that was really Val the cigarette girl in the hallway before entering the bathrooms. The cold bar was an experience! It was always freezing which felt great when you were Xing. The couches, the curtains, the images projected on the curtains. The bathroom stalls were large enough for 10 people.......it seemed. When you latched the door, a tv screen would come on above you. How many times did we see Rob Lowe or Grace Jones walking around? The outfits were the greatest. Roderick "served attitude" at the door, hand picking the guests. We would spend hours getting ready and sometimes a week to make your new outfit!
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER STARCK.

Jan 22, 2005 | 2:33 pmI'll never forget the first time I went to the Starck Club The line was enormous and I watched people being selected by the doorman and allowed in. I was not so fortunate and could not get in. Too much of a prep. I immediately went out and bought a Willie Wear suit and got in the following night. It was like walking in to Wonderland. I remember Rick and his incredible wit and sense of humor, not to mention his incredible talent as a DJ.
X was definitely the craze and it was funny to see all the people in the restrooms X'ing the brains out as the primped in the mirrors, admiring themselves and complimenting everyone else on how beautiful they were.
Everything happened at the Starck Club and when the night was over it was off to the after parties. I can remember being up for days!
I believe John was one of the bouncers and he always looked forward to tossing someone.
It was one big family as you always expected to see everyone there, every night.
Definitely original. Too bad it is not around...I would be there right now.

Jan 08, 2005 | 1:46 pmAlthough it was 20 years ago, I can say, without hesitation, that the best times of my life were at the notorius Starck Club. Everyone felt like a star the moment you walked in. You never knew who you would run into. I remember seeing Robert Plant one evening. A section by the DJ booth was sectioned off for the Eurythimics one evening when they were performing in town. Seeing Annie Lennox on the dance floor was "Heaven." Yes, ecstacy was rampant but it was legal then (not to mention the best). Talk about chewing gum!!! Everyone was X-ing. The saying goes: If you remember any given night at the Starck, you didn't have a good time. Everyone, gay, bi or straight got along let alone all the hugging and kissing. I miss those daze !! Roderick at the door was the best. His outfits!! Then there was Grace Jones! Need I say more? There will never be anything like it again in Dallas.

that's the footage i have. not if i can only dig that up and transfer it to mp4.
