StarckThe Starck club in Dallas was designed by Philippe Starck, owned by a group of investors led by Blake Woodall. (Stevie Nicks was an investor. She performed opening night, as did Grace Jones.) In 1985 became notorious for rampant Ecstasy use. DJs included Rick Squillante and Mike DuPriest (both deceased).

Description: The infamous bathroom stalls at STARCK. Stalls came complete with your private SONY television monitor, that would shut off automatically when not in use. All push button toilets, as seen on this photo, and light sensory faucets were a first for a private club at the time. The STARCK had a way for people to hide. Nooks and crannies were all over the place. The bathrooms were just one of many places in which to hide.

"I'm a Rothchild" Jules, you have no idea how that statement brought back memories of Texans in the 80's. Quite unintentionally histerical.

OMG! I was there @ Bill & Cory's that nite! We were all getting ready to head to Starck! I think Ken Carrizales & Gary Garrison were there w/us too! I still have pics of us from that nite getting ready! I'll have to pull out some of my old pics & post them! I wonder how all my fellow Starckies are doing. Email me! I really miss my friend, Ken. Can't believe I JUST now happened on this site! Also just found out about doc & ordered it, of course! Already saw pic & videos of me in previews.....FLASHBACK! Seriously... WOW!

Unbelievable, what a great time. Sean Sprinkle was a very good friend of mine.
Tragically his life ended far to soon. Many of us have fallen, but we did have a
good time. Some of the time. Party on! JR

There will NEVER, EVER, EVER be another STARCK CLUB - the ERA. The times were the mid 80's - there was an Evolution in Music and Mind-Set, and the way we dressed........I never waited in line, never paid, I guess I was one of the lucky ones - but - what a way to live your nights away!!!!!!!

It was an amazing experience, one that has defined part of who I am today, and forever.

    I, we, will never forget........

  • 1984

    And please let me add;
The Starck Club WAS the legendary Rick Squillante.
    It will never be again..

    RIP Rick..
You gave me 3 of the best years of my life....

  • 1984

    Thank you julian.

You made my point much better than I.
Let's not trash up this Starck forum with a new wanna be club.

The Starck wasn't just a building.
    The Starck was the people.
Blake Woodall, the waitstaff, the bartenders and bar backs, the door men, Val the cigarette girl, and most of all the clientele.

To open a new club in that space and even relate the Starck name to it is a travesty in itself.
For ZOUK to put on it's website 'Located in Downtown Dallas, within walking distance of Dallas' historic West End District, ZOUK Nightclub is a renovation project of the forever famous STARCK Club. World renowned designer Philippe Stark originally brought the space to life in the 80’s, providing a destination party palace for celebrities around the world. Some of its frequent visitors included Madonna, Dennis Rodman, Prince, members of KISS, and countless other pop-icons and socialites' and try to associate ZOUK and the Jersey Shore with the Stack its insulting.
Plus the ZUOK website featuring the Black Eyed Peas music of a remake of the hook of 'Dirty Dancing' theme.
Stop it, enough of the remakes already.
The Starck had unique original music.
The Starck also had original design, and by the pics of ZOUK, they pissed all over that classic design.
This blog/forum is about the one and only Starck.
    It will never be remade.
    It will never be repeated.
It was a historical era of Dallas that some of us had the privilege to experience, and unfortunately (or not) some never will.
It was a different time, not to be repeated..

And to dj299, I may not be NICE, but I am honest..
I will defend the Starck Club, what is was and what it stood for...
I was a part of it, from 1984 to 1987...
    It will never be again..

If the mods feel the need to delete my post, so be it.
But this is how I feel about it.

This is a reminder to all that this is a STARCK CLUB page not ZOUK!

The place we all knew once has been transformed. As far as i am concerned,,out of experience, not just opening my big mouth and saying things without actually experiencing it like some people writing here. You can read my other comments, but i will remind everyone again: "THE STARCK CANNOT BE IMITATED" and from the pictures i have seen of this new space "IT WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED".

You can say you spent a lot of money on creating cheap theatrics, but that is all it is-cheap! In the words of it's creator PHILIPPE STARCK: "you do not kill an icon". STARCK was one in a million and has had alot awful things happen to it. From DV8 to METRONOME to STARCK 1996 to M5 and now this awful named place ZOUK,etc.

The original was exactly what i stated- ORIGINAL! There was nothing like it then and from being in alot of clubs there's still nothing that comes even close. A class act to the last days of its existence. Please do not even go there "better than STARCK"? I DO NOT THINK SO! I will not sit back to allow anyone saying this to an ICONIC club that STARCK was.

My opinion on the new space: BORING, CARBON COPIED AND DUMB! Nothing original. Looks like the lobby at the remodeled ROYALTON HOTEL in NEW YORK another PHILIPPE STARCK masterpiece that was gutted and made into just another hotel that looks like, guess what? Other hotels. Oh how creative!

This is not meant to be nice in anyway so if you think you can be negative towards the STARCK CLUB, I will stand and be negative towards any other that trys to compare to it. This new club that has been created looks like alot of other clubs and hotels. It reminds me of the lobby of the JOULE HOTEL in DALLAS. Do the owners own the Joule too? Cause I may be mistaken, but this club looks like the Joule with many pools standing as mirrors in the existing columns? Oh my god, why did I not come up with this concept. I LOVE THE JOULE by the way! I do not apologize for what I've written.

    To Julie:

The first song on the Documentary is I Touch Roses by Book of Love. It shows up a couple of times in the film including a techno/trance remix of it towards the end. The other tracks played during the films are:

    World Destruction - Time Zone
Let Me Go - Heaven 17
    Tarzan Boy - Baltimora
White Lines - Grand Master Flash
8:15 to Nowhere - Vicious Pink

I have a couple of these on my YouTube channel if you would like to check them out: http://www.youtube.com/user/MemoriesofStarckClub

    Enjoy.

Somehow, when I posted, the last word ( "music" ) in my post became a link to a Ford ad. I apologize. I have no idea how that happened.

Who ever stated that was the crowd I was looking for? I'm not the owner, I was simply directing people to view pictures posted my a news agency, if they wanted to see. I don't like the fact that any Jersey Shore castmate is setting foot in the place, but that doesn't mean that some nights there can't be fun and magical. Zouk is supposedly going to have "Starck Saturdays" which I hope means they'll be playing versions of old Starck tracks, but that remains to be seen. Honestly, for someone who wasn't old enough to attend the old Starck, I'm happy to be able to go inside and party inside such a big and historical place. I was there last June for Starck Red, before the remodel and honestly the old Starck just isn't enough for modern clubbers. Also, douchebags are everywhere in this area and crowd all the best places, if one throws a fit every night and doesn't go to places simply becuase of that and/or let's that ruin your night, then its their loss. Do you not think Starck had many versions of Douchebaggery during it's time. Of course it did...it was musically groundbreaking, but still as pretentious as any DB club nowadays, if not more. People need to get over it and let things be....at least Zouk isn't trying to be Starck and has put over 2 million dollars into bringing this place back from ruin. Try having just a little positive energy...

  • dj299

    That isn't very nice Mr./Ms. 1984.

  • 1984

    Vinny from the Jersey Shore?
    Seriously?
If that is crowd you're looking for, I surely will not waste my time checking the place out.

From your pics of the club, it looks like you've cheesed up what was once a classy club..
The simplicity of the original club is what made it so elegant.

    Good luck with your venture..
I'm sure you'll get a couple good months out of it..

  • JD

The space now actually looks better than before and has been updated to fit more modern times. More than 2 million was spent on renovations, but still with the original floor plan and unisex bathrooms. The DJ Booth has been centered at the too of the stairs leading down to the dance floor bar below. It was still under construction, but here are a few current pictures to get the idea:

I am eager to see Zouk, but have great reservations about what they have done to the club, based on what I see on their website. When I was in the space in June'10 for Starck Red, it seemed to be in pretty good shape. Why did they have to almost gut it and redo it? I think this generation, as well as those of us from the Starck generation, would have found the original design just as fresh and exciting as it was the first time we passed through those velvet ropes in 1984. I have great hope for the "Starck Saturdays" and hope that I can be transported back in time and dance in my favorite spot to my favorite music.

Starck Club to Reopen ... As "Zouk"

'Soft opening Friday, December 3, 2010.'

    From Zouk:

"Hello Everyone. We are the proud new owners of your beloved STARCK CLUB. We are keeping the integrity of the original project and building around it. You do have to understand after 20+ years, we've had to demo most of the original space and build it back up. People who came before us nearly destroyed this beautiful space. We are keeping with the original layout, doors and unisex bathrooms. The past 2 months we've had several people come and share their stories. I would like meet with someone from your group to see if I can setup some kind of STARCK REUNION EVENT. HELP ME REBUILD THE MEMORY ONE MORE TIME. Thank you.

I have a question about the Documentary.. Whats the name of the song playing at the very beginning? I looooove it!

  • Llana

Hi all Starck fans -- doesn't look like there have been comments about the club in a while, but just in case anyone is checking in, I wanted to let you all know that my niece, Charlie La Fontaine, one of the "Charlie girls", died last October (2009) by suicide. She had just turned 40 the month before.

Charlie loved the times she spent partying with all of you at Starck -- it was truly a defining period in her life and she spoke so fondly of the experiences she had in the way back when. I miss her so much and I guess I'm feeling her presence, asking me to send a wave in your direction... From Charlie -- love you all...

    I think Alan summed it up pretty well;
"The club changed my perception of mankind and turned a biggoted Garland boy into a tolerant student of the world."
I used to hang with Cory, Bill, Stan, Danna, Bryan, Trey, and many others..
I remember Big John, Susie (I was on her guest list), Peaches, Val, Chante, Conrad, and so many I can't remember their names..
We used to buy X and poppers at 4001 in Oak lawn and then off to the Starck.
It was legal in the golden days of the Starck.
Usually didn't get there until midnight, but always closed the place down.
I usually went Thursday thru Sunday about every week for, I'm guessing 2 years or so.
    Probably 84 to 86..
Got a real job in March of 1986 and that pretty much toned my partying down to a stand still.
    Rick was amazing.
He was hot most of the time, but some nights he would be in a pissy mood and play awful old disco the entire night.
I would always try to brighten his mod but giving him mood brighteners.
Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
But for the most part, he is the best DJ I've ever grooved to..
I bought a lot of vinyl at Oak Lawn records and still have most of it.
I want to thank those of you who took the time to put up music playlists.
I have many many songs but always looking for more.
I've been look for Ledernacken's Amok, for over 25 years and found it on iLike.com.
I posted some pics today, not sure went they will show up.
    Thanks...

WOW, I am SO glad I discovered this site! Reconnecting to Dallas during those days of the early and mid 1980's would be "starckly" incomplete if it did not include the Starck and a few other clubs. We were all so fortunate to have been able to be there at the right age and at just the right moment in history. I only went to the Starck a few times, though. My spot was Anaconda which was located in the European Crossroads on Northwest Highway across from Bachman Lake. I started a string here on this site about Anaconda. Click this link to check it out:

Amazing the influence this masterful place had over us all. This site has been around 5 years now. The club changed my perception of mankind and turned a biggoted Fort Worth boy into a tolerant student of the world. I'm sorry for all of the people that didnt experience the Starck. Transcendental it was. what I wouldnt give for a time machine and pocket full of MDMA. Hell, forget the time machine.......

What a great site to find. My first time at the Starck was in 1984. I am now married with a child - living just a great life. But what I wouldn't give to go back for one more night. I didn't understand why after 26 years of my first visit that I still think of that placeon a regular basis, that time in my life. After finding this site I now see why. I find it nice to see that I am not the only one. No other club I went to anywhere I went was really any fun - I would always think about being back there in Dallas.

It was really the first place that I was the most comfortable being me.

I made some great friends and still keep up with them.

Good God! Jules, you get me to look at this site and it's like I start having flashbacks. Your mini dissertation is classic you....b***** and way too "I was so above it all".

Now, my memories of this great club in Dallas are quite different. I remember my first night there in 84 made me kind of make it a ritual that when I was in Texas to go to my family's beach house in south padre island, which was like every other month, I would go out in Dallas the night before. It usually came down to two different clubs...starting the night out at Video Bar and then making my way over to Starck Club. I modestly admit that I grew up maybe a little too privileged, thus ran around with Jules and the 80s socialites...I think that we were a little bit ahead of our time and really made the celebutante what it is today.
Back to Starck....I totally remember what I wore my first night working my model hips up those stairs. It was bow heads, t-shirts dressed up with pearls and brooches as long as the eye could see. I thought that my mini, black, studded Thierry Mugler shift dress with high shoulders was a bit over the top at that point. I was the only person there in a snood, lace gloves and seamed hose. I found a terrific tranny later that had my 8 inch high heels on. All of those curtains, nooks, and crannies to do drugs in or make out with some young upwardly mobile professional person that decided to put on his Willie Wear suit to feel hip for an evening. A couple of times I over did the X and actually gave my Donna Karan jacket that probably had a gram or two of blow in one of the pockets....oh those day glo jackets. Fashion was outlandish, the locals that made going to the establishment more of an institution and a way of life were always fun to pal around with. I slipped my 40+ surgically enhanced a** into a strapless Alexander Wang tube dress and made sure I was there for the Starck Red Party. I had so much fun and thought it was too funny that every time that a familiar song from the day came on the whole place started screaming. My oldest daughter came with me and thought it was dull compared to the Tunnel reunion party she went with Jules to. I told her that she would of had to be here back in the 80s in order to really appreciate this moment.

  • Jules Rothchild

I first went to Starck Club in 84 when I was in town with two of my friends that were members of The Flirts. We walked up the stairs and through the entry/bank vault doors. I'm still convinced that the StairMaster idea was conceived from a patron's night at the establishment. We all thought that we we thrown into a taping of MV3 mixed with acid, coke and X. I was kind of taken back by the fact that the music that we were hearing and seeing packed, writhing, dancing usually cleared the floor in Area, Limelight, Tunnel, Danceteria, The Roxy, Neo, and anywhere else we had gone. I was finally up for hitting the floor when Danse Society started pulsating through my body. A couple of years later when I was back in Dallas with another group I made a couple of calls, got back on the list for the evening, took another trip up the stairs with an entourage past the onlookers and into another world. This time I had a much better time. This could be due to the peruvian flake we all had at the hotel and the X we took later. It was the first time I heard Boy by Book Of Love and I just about nut in my drawers from the music this go around. It was like a Wax Trax! extravaganza. I actually made out with a Al Jourgensen look alike. If I smell Djarum I have a reaction that takes me back to that time. I still say a discotheque is a discotheque. Phillipe Starck has gone on to make stupid little gadgets and Ian Schrager designs some amazing hotels. I had a good time no matter where I went. Dallas was just a southern town where everyone thought that they were much a bigger deal than they actually were. I had a much better time at Video Bar. I'm a Rothchild so pretense is kind of as useful as a limp you know what. Video Bar was where I could get down to some industrial or some random dance mix that I had last heard at an art opening in Amsterdam. That was fun fun fun. BTW, people seem to easly forget that ABBA remix that came out that was really awesome...The Visitors

The STARCK CLUB made this midwestern boy the the crasy person he is today. We lived at the STARCK moving past the rope and lines of people waiting to get in...Thursday through Sunday we were groovin to the best music. We bought tins of clove cigs. We danced on the stairs leading to the cold room below...and hung out in the co-ed bathrooms for hours....and we partied hard! Even went one night for a pvt Depeche Mode birthday party...never went home from STARCK always found or made the after party....so many stories...so many wicked killer times.... there was X, coke and crystal everywhere..lol I think we sold most of it like I said everyone was partying...infact I think I'm going clubbinglol ....wish I was there now..lol only to be let down I'm sure....
HEY DONOVAN FRANKO, it's your old friend Todd from back in the day....leave me a way to catch up with you....and to everyone else...we should have a STARCK CLUB reunion party!!!!!

Thank you for posting the photo of the flamingo neon at Mistrals in Dallas. Have lots of fun memories of that place!!

    Dallas was hot in 1980s!!

I can remember Mistrals plaing 'Jump' by Pointer Sisters and everyone on dance floor actually jumped!

So fun. Does anybody else have photos of Mistrals?

"i'm losing you" is the best tune i remember from the starck club! it will still get you fired up & dancin! god! those are some great memories!!! i remember the cops bustin it one night. crazy crazy times when you could buy e for $6 and it was legal! i have the mp3 of the greatest song ever played in the 80s... i'm losing you. email me @ mpp10@hotmail.com and i'll email you the mp3. it will bring you back to a place & time for sure.

  • Walt McKay III

don't know if this Q has been answered but the song with the long loud siren is I'm Losing You by Uptown.
Here is a snip from Wikipedia about the song (why you remember it from Starck)
During the 1980s, on a Dallas, Texas-based Oak Lawn Records label, the song was covered by the group Uptown and transformed into an upbeat dance tune. This version achieved popularity at Dallas' famed Starck nightclub due to early play by DJ Rick Squillante and became a standard in many U.S. nightclubs, reaching the No. 80 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1987. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%28I_Know%29_I%27m_Losing_You

i moved to dallas in the summer of 85. two weeks later somebody that i cannot remember right now (go figure) took me there for a night out. i was already dressing the 'new wave' way with the pearl necklaces hanging around the front of my body and the white shirts with broaches so it was no problem after awhile to just walk up and in. the most memorable moment was the night of the dreaded raid. i have never ran so hard while tweeking on x for the door. its was scary and excitng at the same time!! music was the reason i went. to this day i pull out the vinyls or listen to mp3s that i have made of the music i grew up on. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CLUB LIKE THE STARCK CLUB-EVER!!

To follow up on that I spoke w/ her for a few hours when I was preparing The Starck film, she was sweet, vivacious, spunky, just a real character! what a tragedy, it sounds cheesy but makes me think of It's a Wonderful Life... life is precious, a terrible thing to throw away no matter how bad things seem! Charlie was very encouraging about the film and very helpful....

  • Donovan Franko

I just read the post above about Charlie......I'm in shock. I'm sitting at my desk at work and tears are welling up in my eyes as I type this.
What a sweet little girl she was(that's how I remember her), I wish she would have known how many people she impressed with her sense of style, grace, and raw beauty. She was always nothing but perfect to me. I had just reunited with her through email through this site about six months ago. I had no idea she was going through anything.
No matter what you believe awaits us when we take our last breath here, won't you please take a moment to wish her a safe and happy travel to where she's going? She will be GREATLY missed.
    I love you Charlie.

Hey, Ken A - I heard the news about Charlie from Gus via Facebook - what a tragic loss! May she rest in peace.

    For DJ Kenny B -
I am also in the process of uploading some of the more obscure STARCK songs to YouTube (user name Starck84)...no videos, just the songs to share. My goal is to upload ones that someone else has not already loaded to YouTube. Feel free to check it out - will be adding more this weekend.

    Peace all-
    JimmyG

For those who have not heard: Charlie LaFontaine took her own life this past weekend.
She always made me smile when I was around her.
    Rest now Charlie.

WOW! All my memories of Starck are captured here. I honestly cannot think of a single thing that has been left out – EXCEPT maybe the videos to go with all that great music. In honor of the club I loved I have started the following YouTube channel:

I have taken a couple of months off from posting for the summer but I am currently working on more mixes and will be posting again soon. Check it out and let me know what you think.

I saw a couple of post about Peter O’Brien… Pete and I worked together at Ralph Lauren (with Quinn) back in 1984 – 1987. Pete was still going to Highland Park at the time…

Pete ended up going to culinary school and getting married. He now lives in Western Colorado with his family. Quinn moved around but is now a senior executive at Ralph Lauren in New York City.

Anyone remember Peppy? She was a beautiful girl who at one time was a tournament level golfer. She was an incredible dancer and a fun date. Someone told me she died in the early 1990s…

I don’t know how many times the Highland Park police showed up at Saad and my front door for throwing way too many loud “after partiesâ€â€¦ I’ll never forget when Julie from Miami passed out in the tanning bed and I walked into my bedroom to find the Kozel brothers doing lines on her stomach…

I miss the old Starck days… Towards the end most of my “crew†migrated over to The Rio Room or Pasha… But there were great memories of starting every Thursday and Saturday at S.R.O. and heading down to Starck about 1:00…

    Best to all… Frazier

Wow - this thread is amazing. A real trip down memory lane.

Starck was great. In '84-'85 we had a regular circuit of clubs we would hit during the week - Mistral, Starck, Video bar, Anaconda it was such a care-free time (I see Craig Richardson posted on here!). I see many more names on this forum that I recall that are still with us and sadly some names of those that are no longer here...

From '85 - '88 I was at SFA in Nacanowhere and it was harder to get back to Dallas (we tried to get to Big D as often as we could to see what was being spun and to stop by Oak Lawn Records so we could take the sounds back to SFA).

Around '88 was when Squill and Guy England came to Nac! I can't tell you how many late nights we had keeping the party going long after Rick would spin at Nac's very own little slice of Dallas' club scene (The Hot Hot Club).

The music and the vibe from this period are priceless as are all of the memories. Rick was a god among men when he was spinning (Still love to hear "The Visitors by ABBA turned up to 11 - gives me chills to this day)...

Thanks to all for the memories.

Scroll up and see my post from March 23. The tears I shed at seeing the deteriorating Starck in March, were replaced on Saturday with screams of joy and the sweat of enthusiastic dancing. I cannot begin to describe my giddiness as I rounded the corner onto McKinney, saw the parking lot filling, the curtains billowing in the breeze, and the red velvet ropes at the bottom of the stairs. It was an unbelievable feeling as I entered and heard the same music, felt the same aura, and saw the same people, all joyfully dancing just for the joy of dancing to songs they loved. I danced in my same favorite spot on the stage, for hours and hours. So carefree, so happy!

Never in my life have I been able to really feel like I was able to go back in time and rediscover a part of me that has been suppressed by my "adult" life. Thank you so much, Billy, for making this happen. I was so glad I got to thank you in person. You summed it up when you told me, "Just roll back the clock and enjoy!" I did. I really did. I will remember Starck Red forever!

I went to The Stark the very first night it was open, which was not the "grand" opening. I brought my date and arrived shortly after the doors opened. Believe it or not, their were only a few non-employees there for the first hour or two (maybe 9 or 10). My date needed to go to the restrooms so we located them and I waited outside for her. To my great surprise, a man and woman walked into the restroom that my date had entered. I thought that was odd and being somewhat concerned my date might be a little startled, so i followed them inside. When my date walked out of the stall area and into the lounge, she was a bit surprised to see me there. We struck up a "conversation" with the other couple and "unofficially " kicked off the era of unisex bathroom parties at The Stark!! Point is, it was "on" from day-one/hour-one. A few short days/weeks thereafter, it was shoulder to shoulder in both restrooms, usually with women on each shoulder waiting to enter the stalls, as I used the urinals .... oh what great fun!!

One thing I liked about Rick was he wasn't afraid to throw in the occasional rap song. I rememeber hearing Run DMC and Whodini at the Starck and everybody going crazy. We had our own crew of breakers. 85 - 86 good times at the Starck

Quick story from the present. I too was regular. A couple of weeks ago I'm sitting in capital campaign meeting for the Private Christian School my kids attend in Dallas in the home of one of Dallas's first families and they are playing a vid about the capital and then the panned to a couple of parents for testimonials... I took a double take and it was Blake Woodall giving the testimonial. I was like WTF..I bet we are the only 2 people around here with the Stark background. Funny.

This site has been amazing to read. I have so many similar memories to those posted here. And a big thank you to everyone who has posted playlists of old Starck tracks. There are also a couple of good iTunes iMixes that someone has made – listing Starck favorites available pur purchase there.

I just went thought my old vinyl, and there are some Starck essentials that people have failed to mention. (Or maybe they did mention them and I missed it. I did, after all, kill a lot of brain cells at Starck.)

make no mistake, Dallas was ground zero in the early 80s for the rest of the world to follow....and follow they did...country to country...the summer of love became an initiation ceremony for all tribes of all the lands ....spreading growing effortlessly and in natural progression.as it was written long long ago.It baffles me to think that so many people collectively are finally waking up from this dream we call reality. In other words, what did we learn from that experiece and what can we do to inspire, heal, and love one another.

  • Art

Well Hello my old friends....I too am very happy to have found all of u again. Its funny to read your comments and your memories of the magic that happened at the Stark.Theres just a couple of things I feel I must say in honor and respect of those who initiated the arrival of the New Age that what happened in dallas at the stark was epic and the fact that it actually happened and no one really still knows about it, confirms what few of you, who were actually there, dont seem to be aware of.That scene was the first true underground electronic music scene that all the audience was, collectively, lifted to a higher state of consciousness.thats what happened at the stark.it happened for the first time to alot of people.it led the way for the rest to follow.

received this press release today. wondering why no mention of sita. that seems like a rather unfortunate oversight. wasn't it sita that provided the connection to starck in the first place?

    THE WOODALL GROUP TAPS
MICHAEL CAIN, WADE RANDOLPH HAMPTON AND MELINA McKINNON
    TO PRODUCE THE STARCK PROJECT.
Award-winning Filmmakers to create multiple projects
centered around Dallas and 1980’s iconic nightclub.

Dallas, Texas. – May 7, 2009 – The Woodall Group, led by Starck Club founder Blake Woodall, announced it has signed a multi-media production agreement with Sundance award-winning director/producer Michael Cain along with partners; producer/music supervisor, Wade Randolph Hampton and producer, Melina McKinnon. This partnership allows Cain, Hampton and McKinnon full rights to the story and an archive including hundreds of hours of rare footage, thousands of photos and memorabilia surrounding the legendary tale of the Starck Club. “With access to the inner circle and those who created and lived the Starck experience, we will be able to step behind the drapes again into the glamour, decadence, opulence and sheer pleasure that was 1980’s Dallas,†said Michael Cain.

A ceremony will take place on the steps of the original fabled club on May 12, 2009 marking the 25th anniversary of the Starck Club’s opening. That evening Woodall, along with Greg McCone, the Club’s general manager and David Hynds, the Club’s video artist, will be handing over their archives to the filmmakers at the media reception. Starck Club was built by Blake Woodall who in 1982 flew in relatively unknown designer Philippe Starck to create what many have come to regard as a monumental cornerstone of international nightclubs. The revered ‘investors list’ included rock star, Stevie Nicks who played opening night with Starck’s most loyal instigator, Grace Jones. Amidst the endless flow of notable guests…from Robert Plant to Rob Lowe…Princess Stephanie of Monaco to rockstar Prince – the line between exquisite and absurd was often blurry, but always beautiful.

Woodall stated, “Many others have wanted to tell this story and I have been judicious in my selection of these particular filmmakers. Michael, Wade and Melina are the right people, at the right time with personal ties to Dallas and The Club, as well as, the professional experience to bring this story to life. The fruits of our labor and partnership will enhance and possibly transform Dallas’ image, which was created in the late 1980’s, all around the world.â€

The Woodall Group and the producers are working on the STARCK PROJECT, which includes the documentary feature, narrative feature and television opportunities all based in the 1980’s focusing on Dallas, Texas and the Starck Club as central characters. “We will strive to reveal the impact Dallas, the Starck Club and those who created this once in a lifetime experience had on international culture – from music to architecture to fashion,†said Michael Cain. "I am grateful to the Dallas Film Society Board for allowing me to take a 2-month sabbatical from my duties as Artistic Director of the AFI Dallas International Film Festival, so that I can focus my efforts on this project during this critical time."

Amy, I was there for the music and the costume party every weekend. I know that there were plenty of "regulars" who loved the Starck every weekend just like I did, and enjoyed it without the veil of altered perception. The music and the visuals were enough for me.

  • James1

I never knew this club existed until an article about it appeared in the Dallas Morning News. Must've been quite an experience. I was listening to some of the music that was played there from links posted to this forum. I am stunned at the range of music - it's the best I've heard in a long time.

Anyway, I would like to get a a fairly complete list of the music that was played there. I want to find as many copies of them as I can. I know some songs have been mentioned in this forum, but I'd like to see more.

If anyone can help me with this I'd be most appreciative.

  • amy

tou know after reading all this crap, I am a little sad. you guys never mentioned the real deal. you could have done your x at white rock lake. the true genius of Stark was the theater. we could dress like we wanted and dance alone. the archetecture and the music could have been and should have inspired people to try what ever they dreamed. It did not take a handful of drugs to get to that moment.
Gosh, I look back and realize how many are dead. drugs, suicide, accounting.... I had better hopes for my friends.
I am just glad that I moved to La . married a punk rocker and made a life of ART.
My kids will hear the music, but then again, 25 years is a long time ago

I worked the door at Stark and was a vj at the Video bar.
gosh what a long time ago that was! these pictures are amazing!
I remember being there when the chili peppers played. I was in the Moda show, wearing Stormmy Leather clothes that rolled on. I remeber whipping someone in the ear...and that girl followed me everywhere. After that, I kept a ridding crop at my side while taking cash.
On more than a few occasions I would say,'its ten to get in, if you touch me its 20."
I know I wore my Moms prom dress (green) on Homecoming. (That was me as Tyler.)
I was good friends with Dale and Jay, the Bar tender. He served Princess Stephanie her vodka that night.
Usually I worked the door with Juan and Trinni or Steve, sometimes Dawn.
Blake was an awsome boss. Remember when we tried to find a new club in the tunnels under the city.
    Talk about under ground.

hi everyone!,just took a close look at the photos from the above link, and it just took my breath away.once again a beautiful detailed testimony at just how amazingly gorgeous that nightclub was.there are clubs, and there is the STARCK CLUB.this club should be recognized with the respect it deserves, and these photos are an absolute gem.rumour is BLAKE WOODALL is planning his own documentary in the coming year, and i for one would like to say "i do not like the one being released now,AT ALL!!".I personally beleive it deserves a FIRST-RATE treatment, and from what i've seen on MYSPACE,this particular LORDS OF DISCOTHEQUE is cheap, and low-grade.BLAKE,if there is a way? i would like to contribute:articles, pics, and first person experience.i am also pissed that the doc. of now has copied pictures that i intended for this site only, which to me is very cheap, and unprofessional.go BLAKE!!,i am on your side, and a personal thank you for bringing PHILLIPE STARCK into your's,and other's investment of this superb nightclub.

I loved the Starck Club, would go anytime I got the chance. I have a tattoo of the dancing guy on my hip. Still have a reserved sign from one of the tables. I think of the good times all the time. We would load the car up with as many friends as possible. Took a new couple with us one weekend and the husband couldn't get in so we sent him home in a cab and the wife stayed to party. She was hooked after that. Still love to dance to Starck music.

I love this site! I am celebrating 50 years on this earth and hosting a benefit party in the famous “Starck Club†location. During my college days at Texas Tech and mid-twenties, we traveled to Dallas for weekend get-aways and lots of crazy fun! During this era, the Starck Club was absolutely the place to be!!

I am throwing a party with my friends to benefit Legacy Founders Cottage, an AIDS counseling center and hospice in Dallas that is feeling the pain of decreased funding. So in the spirit of helping those in need and of having a great time, I want to open up Starck Red to anyone who wants to start the summer dancing!

We can never recreate the Starck Club, but we are going to mix some old and new to create a memorable night! I've hired two famous DJ’s for this amazing party - DJ Blaine and DJ Kimberely S - to spin the night away. THE hottest bartenders, dancers, and eclectic entertainment.

    Come celebrate with me!

    Hola chicos y chicas!

KJ - what a lovely way to start the movie!
JULIAN - do you recall the glorious spray of sparks arcing over the audience at that C&C show? Thanks for remembering that night for me (cuz I forgot about it until I read yr post).

There was a great documentary about Leigh Bowery that came out a few years ago. There was a lovely section about "getting ready" - how that was as important as "going out". Roderick used to call at 945pm on Saturday evenings (he was sposed to be there at 10), saying he would be late due to a "fashion emergency". When he would finally appear, it was never less than spectaular! How many times in recent memory can you describe someone you have seen at a club or bar as "spectacular"? Niece always wuz, tho.

I am still amazed at the legacy of Starck Club, y'all - from matre d's to fash-yun types, all around the world. So glad to know that those things that we did are permanently burned into the collective conciousness of a generation of X'ers.

    A few other observations:

    - WIG-STARCK, with RuPaul as StarBooty (or was that another party?)

    - WOODSTARCK, the disasterous outdoor all day concert in the parking lot. Clearview had similar "programming" during that day - for FREE. No one showed up until the Daylights' set at 10pm.

    - Greg B, in his full leather regalia (harness, codpiece, etc), for Halloween. Straight. Sure.

    - Scotty playing the guitar. Sigh. Dreamy.

    - The smoking lounge on the kitchen dock (SITA!). Did we think we were invisible? This is where I learnt the saying "NO COFF, NO OFF".

    - Caviar "pie". There were times in college that I survived on champagne and (bad) caviar. Tough.

    - Gino, Suzi, Penny, Big John, Dickie (I still see him @ JRs when I am in Dallas) are the eternal waitstaff on the schedule in my mind.

    - Greg B, Medley, Danny, Craig, Hutch, John Dunn, and Grisham are behind the bar, with Scotty, Shannon, and DMC slinging ice.

    - Lee's in coatcheck: Vaal's in the Smoker; Guillermo has his crew scattered throughout; Chris and Jim are in the kitchen.

    - Dale and the valet boys are out front.

    - Sam, Steven, Roderick, Mark, Dale, Dawn are on the ropes.

I lost teeth (during construction), had my nose broken, and got cracked in the head when Hutch kicked the swinging door from the Cold Bar to the dancefloor. You could say that my blood, sweat, and tears are still down on McKinney. I always think of the Talking Heads song, HEAVEN:

    Everyone is trying
    To get into the bar.
    The name of the bar
    The bar is called HEAVEN.

I recall our late Perry B, telling Lynn Lidgi, to put Marvin Gaye on the turntable. And Dance.

    Go dance, kids.

  • stevemoon

Tom: You are referring to 'White Lines' by GrandMaster Flash. Great dance tune! Steve

  • Tom Rockman Jr.

Hey, Starckies, what is the name of the dance song (circa 1987-88) that goes: "Get Higher Baby! Get Higher Baby! Dance!" The Starck Club is/was my favorite dance club of ALL time and my friends and I used to hang out there on a regular basis.

I'm surprised that an up-and-coming novelist (hmmmm?) hasn't used the Starck Club as one of the settings for his/her novel. Anyway, does anyone know the name and artist of the song? I'm going nuts trying to figure it out.

Chris and Cosey played August 18, 1987 with S.P.K., for a 6:00 pm show. More online search STARCK CLUB 1987.

I miss your comments, please come back and check in.

    Much love from SF, CALIFORNIA.

What a great place!! Does anyone remember when Chris and Cosey played there? I can't remember what year they performed....amoung other things I don't remember well from that time!

Oh, Donavan, thank you. I guess it dawned on me that it will soon be 25 years since it opened, and I have really been thinking about those years spent dancing the nights away. I was 21 in 1984. What a lifetime away!

I only went a few times in '88, and stopped going soon after that. I really, really wish that the last time I was there I would have realized it was to be my last time.

I was driving through Dallas this afternoon and made myself go by the club for the first time in more that 20 years. It was like seeing a formerly glorious movie star forgotten in a deserted hall in a nursing home. If I had not know where it was, I would have never noticed it. The only thing that made it even worth a second look to the unfamiliar were the doors. I parked my car (a Vovlo wagon- can that be more of a contradiction!) and walked toward those doors. I closed my eyes and could see Bob and Roderick and the line. I could smell the hairspray and the cloves.I could hear the laughter of anticipation and the arguments between drunken lovers. As I looked up, I was deeply saddened by what I saw. There were no curtains, of course. The paint on the poles was chipped and peeling . The steps, which used to seem like we were ascending into another world, were fewer and lower than I remembered, haggard, and covered with wind-blown dirt and leaves. I walked up to the doors, stood on my tiptoes, and for a split second hoped I could magically look in and see the Starck in its former glory. It was so dark I saw absolutely nothing. I felt the tears begin to well up.

  • DonovanFranko

It was 1987, I was a junior in high school, Nolan Catholic High, just a few miles down 30 from where the accident happened. Those were some great older guys that looked after my 2 friends and I more than once in that scene. I grew up in Fort Worth and started making that trek to Dallas every Thursday night and back to Fort Worth Sunday afternoon about 1984. Mark was a good man.

  • kj

Does anyone remember English Mark who worked for Arlington EMS? I used to hang with him, English Rick, and Scottish Robbie and Jamie, and others. Mark left the club late one Sunday night (actually Monday morning), driving back to FtW. The driver (I cannot remember who it was) told us that they got into an argument, and pulled over on I -30 near 360. Somehow Mark ended up in the middle of the highway and was killed by an 18 wheeler. A few hours later, a letter came from the Sussex Fire Brigade, offering him a position. That had been his lifelong dream, and he missed it by less that eight hours. So tragic.... I wish I could remember-- was it '86 or '87?

  • kj

Pardon the randomness of my memories. I am typing them as I recall them.

I, too, was at the Starck occassionally in '84 and regularly from '85- 88. My now ex/then husband was there several times a week, He was quickly on Bob's guest list. I think we only had to wait in line the first two times we went. One of the best feelings was sashaying past all the laughing preps we could hear saying things like "look at those freaks". They would get really quiet as we were so warmly greeted by Bob, et al, an let right in. I loved to given the posers a long look over my shoulder as if to say "Who's laughing now?" as I ascended the steps.

I must have been the only regular not practicing better living through chemistry. I was in medical school, so I got by on Midori sours and ended the night on Tuaca, after Rick introduced me to it. I had a bast dancing, even though I have no sense of rhythm. I was the girl with at times maroon and at times orange red or strawberry blond waist length hair. My favorite place to dance was on that little stage near the top of the stairs.

I remember the barium swallows and other xrays that were played on the monitors in the bathrooms. (Figures, doctor that I am!)

I only went to one after party. Matthew Broderick was there, sitting on a bed with some of his people. looking like he was totally out of his element.

The first thing the ex and I got in the mail from the Starck was a coconut. Does anyone remember that? I have the return address part of the box still. I have a folder with almost a dozen articles, a couple of Valentine'e Day party invitations, and other memorabilia. I had several shirts, and think I only still have one plain one, and one from NYE '87.

I also remember spiky haired Kevin sleeping our couch one night and being awoken by our cat eating the Knox gelatin our of his hair which he used to style it.

How many cans of Aqua Net Extra Super Hold did I go through in those Starck years. I remember styling my hair for an hour, getting angry and starting all over, There was a reason we started getting ready 2 or 3 hours before we planned on arriving.

Used to own a sweater dress that belonged to Melody/Jeff: "Dude looks like a Barbie!" We were all hot then. Just well-preserved now.

I'm reliving the Dallas 80s in Beijing China right now. It's a city of fast money, bright lights, optimism, and pushing the boundaries of a once conservative past. It's a country where the real estate developers are kings and everything they are doing is BIG, flashy, and in some cases bit tacky. It's awesome and the similarities are shocking.

Now, I actually have had some brief flashbacks at another Starck creation called the LAN club. Primarily a restaurant, it still has a signature "Starck feel" to it. Just google LAN club Beijing.

This club is on the 4th floor of my office and we'll occasionally have lunch there. A visit to the bathroom at LAN brings back memories of taking my girlfriend into the private stalls at the Starck and doing some things...well...if you are on this page, you can probably guess.

I remember the party being in the Northwest Hwy/Skillman area across from the Village. Definitely one of the weirdest/strangest/funniest things I have ever seen at any party. Steve

  • julian

oh yes!i remember the balcony falling off,but i do not think it was this party mentioned.it was in OAK CLIFF,and the party was going really nice, but not for long.at the time my nephew knew 2- different gangs that occupied several cubicles at STARCK CLUB several nights a week doing BUSINESS ,if you catch my drift.well as the night went on,and BACK TO LIFE was blasting off the huge soundsystem, some idiot dropped a whole bottle of champagne on the HI-FI stereo, and next thing we know a large black puff of smoke goes up in the air, through the entire living room, and out the door with every invited guest entow.next thing i know,i am pushed off the balcony, and i remember hearing"THE KEG!!!,THE KEG!!!,and the entire balcony spilling over a large yard, nobody cared who got hurt,as long as the keg was safe.this KEG was promptly removed from the dining room area, onto the balcony, after the HUGE crowd filled the bedrooms, dining room, and the large bathroom, including the shower stall!!it is a night i will never forget,at the end of the party there was a shoot out, police, ambulances, and the city of dallas fire dept.many people from starck were there.who?,i knew a couple of them there.it was a hell of a party.STARCK REGULARS were not ONLY rich,or upscale, beleive me when i say"people from all over were there",my sister lived down the street from the PRO AUDIO guy who installed the STARCK sound system, and the stories are endless

  • stevemoon

I remember the balcony falling off. I think I jumped off after that and headed to the parking lot, seeing as the sun was coming up by then. Ahhhhhhh, good times! Steve

  • DonovanFranko

I remember that party. It was spring, and humid, and no one was hurt either. Party kept rolling too.

  • Kal

Here's another "anyone else?" question. Anyone else remember being at the after party in the village (Northwest higheay area) when the balcony fell off the second story--with several people on it? I have a distinct memory of the guy next to me saying "man, do you think the keg's okay?" and someone else looking up at the apartment from the ground saying, "Marci--I hate to say it, but I think your security deposit is in serious jeopardy."

    Couple o' more random thoughts:

    AURORA BEAM:
First of all - a big THANK YOU for the awesome lighting that really help set the mood! Loved it! One question - whenever there was a really f**ked up person trying to make their way up the stairs, would you ever mess with them by shining those bright lights at the top of the stairs down toward them? Sometimes it seemed so - and this would totally crack us up (it happened to me a few times...so we'd just squint and grab the railing and pull ourselves up the stairs). :-)

THE HUGE DOORS GOING INTO THE LOUNGES
Does anyone else recall hanging out in either lounge, watching either 'tourists' or messed up folks come in and NOT get out of the way quickly enough so that the huge doors would swing back and knock them over? Again - hours of mindless entertainment.

    AFTER HOURS PARTIES
Always the question of the night, before closing. We usually ended up in Oak Lawn, off McKinney Ave, or downtown. Two of them stick in my mind - one of many at Manor House Apts..where we were on the balcony on doing power hits of Medusa and hanging over the railing. Or - the one at the Argyle Apts...I think her name was Melanie (transgender blonde girl) and her male roomie - cannot recall his name, but he had a hissy fit for some reason and starting tearing all the blinds from the windows. Anyone at either of these?

And - we all know X was a choice enhancement...but chocolate mesc anyone?? Anyone??

Finally - sad to hear of Howard (platinum blonde doorman). He was always so sweet and would greet me with a kiss every night.

Since this May marks the 25th anniversary of the grand opening....it seems as if a reunion or celebration is in order.

Each time I revisit this site - it brings a smile to my face...knowing that there are so many others out there who were so profoundly touched by the wonderous STARCK Club. To see such passion TWENTY years after it closed is truly a testament to its lustor.

So sad to hear about Vaal, Lee (he always cracked me up), Roderick, and of course Rick and GoGo Mike - may they all rest in peace.

RONNIE BRUNO - I hope you got the Six Sed Red SHAKE IT RIGHT file that I emailed to Kurt S for you (he's cut my hair since 1987!!). If it didn't work and you're still looking for it, email me at jngsmu99@hotmail.com

I am in the process of converting all my STARCK vinyl to digital...and it is a total blast!

    PEACE.

More about music: Media Master is shutting down. Right now you can still access http://puddyola.net/starck.html, but for how long I don't know. I have loaded all I had there plus a few more to http://www.lala.com/

You can access using starckclub@gmail.com as the email address and starck85 as password. Click on all songs under MY COLLECTION and enjoy. I hope to eventually be adding some of Rick's mixes. Please do not modify/add anything as it is in my name.

First visited the Starck Club in 1985, I was only 16, luckily my best friends older brother worked the door so not only did we not pay cover but also never waited in line. VIP punks.

We went every weekend...until the the drug bust, then things changed. That place was amazing, the clientele, the decor, the music, the bathroom, and the full dome X tabs.Starck changed and shaped me forever, what an amazing time an vibrant venue. I visited Dallas last year and went to the old Starck club, you can barely recognize the place, pool tables...Dance on!

I think I pretty much lived there from 85 to 87/88 (can't remember exactly, but I quit going when Rick left). Many fantastic memories, so many you don't know where to start - or how to explain that scene to anyone who didn't experience it. Very sad to hear about Rick's passing a while back, as well as the others I read about on this page. Hi to Charlie Girl - I'm sure you are the Charlie I knew back then!

As the old credo goes: memories are far superior to anything material. I grew up at The Starck Club. I first began attending Saturday evenings while still in high school in Houston in '84. After my first evening I was hooked. First with Kathleen and Morgan, then later sharing a table with Bill. From '84-December 31, 1988, even after the raid when it began to slide, I'd travel to NY and LA and still nothing compared. Out of all my t-shirts, Reserved table signs, matchbooks, weekend anfter weekend, eventually taking it all for granted, I have one Starck Club pass that my clever mother Lynda managed to keep. It was from Mike Grisham. I have it framed and proudly displayed so that I can look at the smoke stacks, the Starck man, and THANK GOD that I managed to purchase every single import vinyl track and version that Ricky played, from vinyl to DAT, then eventually to CD. Isn't it interesting, from a historical point of view, that as ill as the late Peter Jennings of ABC was at the time, he produced an incredibly accurate two-hour special called, "Ecstasy Rising," showing the world that the jury is still out and propaganda, the real kind, (not the incredible staple of a STARCK CLUB group: ie Duel, Jewel, P-Machinery, and Dr. Mabuse) is still abound. I think we will eventually have just as much historical information, interviews, movies, etc. on The Starck Club as Studio 54 eer had. The primary reason is that many people are still alive to tell truly unbelievable stories of just another night at the only place to be and be seen in the US for four years.

    Ron

p.s. Yes, the 1984 version of West End Girls on Bobcat Records was the ONLY version I ever heard Ricky play inside those walls.

    Steve Moon--

Well, as I live and breathe. Yes, I'm here. Where are you? I'm up in Addison -- even though I swore that I'd ever live north of LBJ.

(Actually, those are my pictures of Starck t-shirts on the first page.)

The last I heard, Henry was in Nashville, and notoriously bad about returning e-mails. I can get his address for you, if you'd like to try.

I haven't heard from Lisa in years and years.

Yu can e-mail me at yahoo.com, as llmtax2000.

    Ric--

The last time I saw Dickie was 1998/99. Under the heading "surreal moments," I ran into him in the shampoo aisle at a Target store near downtown Dallas. He looked (and dressed) exactly the same as he had ten years before.

  • DonovanFranko

    Well put Randall.
What an escape the Starck was from the mundane, and rigid everyday environment most of us came from in the Metroplex. An oasis, a microcosim of what it should be like, to just be yourself and have fun.

I just stumbled across this site and am quite amazed at how much time has slipped away since I first stepped into the Starck Club. I have lived in NYC for 20 years now and still have not had as much fun as I did from 84-88 and what I would give to go back for one night, well to recapture my youth but to see friends that are no longer with us and friends that I have lost touch with. Reading everyones blogs there seems to be such a familiar theme and that is one of a deep rooted fondness for the place that gave us an escape from conservative Texas daily life to a life fantastic.

Wow, this is incredible. I stumbled across this thread while looking for a song that was a Starck regular to add to my collection that I am rebuilding: Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight by The Dominatrix. This really brings back memories.

I was a Starck regular from near the beginning to sometime in 1987. I was attending SMU at the time, as were my roommate and girlfriend. My roommate and I had almost 1000 records between the two of us with a decent stereo with dual turntables and a mixing board. We spent many a Saturday evening making mix tapes while having a pre-party and getting ready to go to Starck.

My girlfriend and roommate both worked at the Alphagraphics across from SMU. What a great hookup that place turned out to be.

We lived for Thursday and Saturday nights back then! And, the music is still playing in my head, and now on my iPod. I've been converting my vinyl to mp3s and putting them on my iPod. Great fun!

Henry, Kal, Lisa, if you're out there let me hear from you. Steve

Amazing - I've enjoyed reading about so many great times at the Starck. I started going a couple of months after it opened; we'd drive over from Louisiana and stay at the Hilton on M'bird. I remember buying clothes when I got to Dallas and thinking I was all hip-and-happening--which I must have been because I always got in and eventually landed on the guest list.

Sometimes, I'd dress up as cartoon characters (like Charlie Brown) - and just mess with people--always making new friends--we were having an electric experience.

My mother would always be good for an extra $100 spot when I was going to Dallas, until one of her friends told her about the Starck club. When I asked for some more cash, she said she wouldn't give me another penny to go to that "zoo." Funny - but I got it out of her one way or another.

Be cool, my friends, and be thankful we lived through those years. It's a warm, fuzzy haze of great memories.

I remember the old Starck Days. I was a regular club member from 84-88. I had seen patrons come and go and really had a disdain for the place after 88. The magic was gone. Maybe after the big X bust of 86 . I was there in 97 when someone else try to capture the magic and it was a joke. Just like Studio 54 from ( 77-80) No one can capture the magic we had from 84-86. I think all the Fort Worth people ruined the scene. It was a cool place , especially in 84 and 85. I guess I am older but still love my youth in those days.

    Charlie Girl,
I'm sure you are the same girl that I got to know there....you might remember me....you would ride your bike over to my house on University & Preston. I was the HP basketball player that worked up at Simon David....would have been the summer of 1986. As I recall, we were supposed to go the night of the bust but didn't.

Let me know if that rings a bell.

Any of you guys remember Pete O'Brien?

keeping it alive! listening to starck music and remembering,,,,,,,

  • Richie (Richard)

Just found this site and have been having serious flashbacks listening to the music on the myspace page, God, I loved the Starck, I was there with friends almost every weekend from 85-88, strangely, was home and watching the news with my parents when they got raided, I had a lot of explaining to do that night. I, like most of the people on this site were on the list, so didn't have to stand in line. Was everybody on the list, did anyone actually pay cover back then? That was a transformative time and place. I've lived and partied all over the world, and can honestly say there was never a place I've been to that measured up to the Starck during those years. I remember always getting to sit in Rick's private area, we thought we were "IT". I was the way too skinny kid, (too much X) always dancing on the steps in front of the white marble with Dennis Leach, Steve Moore, Dan Ward and my first boyfriend and lover Randy Carrier (RIP), who I still miss. I still vividly recall taking X for the first time and going to the Starck, it kicked in just as Sade was coming on early in the evening, the dance floor was almost empty except for the group we came with, and there was one in the group, a lady and she was wearing a red dress and red shoes, and the lights shifted from that deep purple blue to red and I just had to tell her I loved her and her red shoes, LOL,good times. and Does anybody else remember Halls down in Austin?

Thanks for these amazing memories. Am looking for pics to add (anyone remember a few pics in Elle Italia circa 85-6?). I spent a lot of time, post-Starck, at NY & LA clubs - but Starck was one of a kind. Only NY's Paradise Garage compares for decadence (& perhaps a few raves I later attended before I became O-L-D) ... Please let me be a dunce & ask if gymnast Lee that passed away mid-90s is Lee White from Sita's pic? I see where coatcheck Lee passed away and where Lee White gave a video tape . . . just trying to ascertain -- I can't remember Lee being coatcheck (a lotta X under the bridge) but I remember him waiting when boys were allowed to serve. Lee (Gebhauer) White & I were buddies from school so just wanted to know if he's around, but I'm guessing they are one and the same? Great pic of him by the way, Sita - thank you. He was, maybe still is, a beautiful brother. Thanks for any info and for the memorials to friends' passed (Val, Rick, et. al.)

ahhh... back in the day! went to starck once (underage and wide-eyed in '85, with a curfew!) and will never forget it and the whole exuberant vibe. not sure how i managed to get in - likely my date's XSive business tendencies - and unfortunately by the time i was legal clubbing age it was closed. downtown and ellum had a heyday afterward likely due more to starck than anything (except maybe lalapills wink) and so glad i got to experience those club days and warehouse after parties at least. oh my stars but it was all so pure back then eh? thanks for the memories of some amazing dallas soul and some true texas souls! cheers from a recovering texan in amsterdam

Howdy - Darren! You make me feel like a WEST END GIRL all over again w/that track! STARCK sure was in the West End, oh yea, and MADAME BUTTERFLY - I went as her for halloween that year.... Late nights at STARCK were magical, oh YES indeed!!!!! - as a manager that closed it at 5am. (unless the LIZARD LOUNGE in the basement was open) Remember the basement? After Hours with George (kiss kiss) Baum, and the 'cafe society'. We opened that for just a short time in the later years - as an antidote to the techno-blitz that had taken over the beloved new wave. We played hip-hop - (when it was still mellow and Hot) a band I produced performed: IGP (international grand posse) Baby G was my darling baby DJ extraordinaire! STARCK hosted the national DJ competition for DMC (disco mix club - venerated music industry group) - Baby G won the nationals! - against the Chicago DJ - NY - all of them!!! As the producer, he and I went to London - Wembley Stadium (10,000 people) to compete in the internationals: at the Stanton Music Awards (Stanton invented the turntable) We were hangin' backstage with Soul to Soul - w/Jazzy "KEEP ON MOOVIN' Jay. Baby G came in 4th in the competition, but we had a great time anyway. The stage was 2 enormous turntables.... Lisa Stansfield sang BEEN AROUND THE WORLD.
STARCK night: there was always a good way for us - the Club staff - to tell if it was a really good night: if, between 1 and 2 in the morning the place was just GOING OFF and we were ruuuunning - more champagne, tickets, glasses whatever... if people had their hands in the air, gyrating, blitzing out to the music blasting, the lights blazing, a total frenzy - then it was a good night!!
For several years I'd leave at 9 when we opened, having made sure all the door staff were in place - guest lists as well as karate boys dressed up nice. (little known fact: I was a green belt in tai kwan do at the time, and did not drink - saved my life in that business....) Being part of the planning day-staff, I was at the Club all afternoon, making sure, along with fabulous Valerie, Greg Mc Cone general manager, that we booked all those great bands that played at the STARCK CLUB. As well as al the messing and arguing over what sort of New Years balloons, Christmas, Easter, your Birthday, your mamma's Birthday party favors we'd be buying at least 2 or 3 tons of.... engineering the balloon drop with Dave Hinds, oh wow!!! The man is a genius!!!
I spent what seemed like years on a ladder - changing gels in the lights and setting up the pin-matrix on the light board. Grace Jones' manager and Kerry Jaggers taught me all I know about lights: a lot, due to their divine perfectionism - love those guys. They helped set up the Club helped choose all the systems (light and sound) - don't forget: GRACE JONES was a part of the Club (and performed at STARCK 5 times) All the people I loved and worked with... It was just as much fun creating it, bringing the STARCK CLUB to you live and in living color - I had sooooo much fun!!!! danced my way through the decade - that STARCK sound was just sooo gooood!!!! Yea....
It's a shout out to Y'all, as I'm off to Argentina to make a movie and will not be checking this site for some time.
xxxxxxxxxxxx Shine your own Star, Follow your own Dream! Dance to your own Tune!!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Does anyone remember the growling analogue attack of Trans X 's "Living On Video"? Or how about the funky drop bass of File 13's "Taste So Good"? Starck from 84-85 was brilliant. After 1986 though, Starck was a less brilliant animal.

    Karen,

The version of West End Girls that I recall is this one from 1984. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyBJVXos9mg

Before the single version of West End Girls arrived, this remix of "Opportunites" was a big hit at The Starck. It was my favorite song that Rick ever played.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10iZAbmyPkU

What I would do to hear those tracks again, loud and in that space. What a special gift it all was.

To Cameron, Rodrick passed a few years ago. It was one of the saddest days of my life. I wrote a poem about her that day. He (actually She) would have been so happy to have a hot black man for President.

Dear Starckies, I'm very happy to know so many of you are alive and well and have equally fond memories of Starck. It was an exhilarating and purifying escape from a redneck, bible belt society. I left Dallas in '88 to cycle through Europe for six months then moved to San Francisco. I have been in L.A. since '99 and life is good here. Be sure to look me up when you are here.

    Love and Peace,
    Penny [pennylmcclain@yahoo.com]

I am trying (mediamaster is not cooperating) to upload 6 mixes of West End Girls to http://puddyola.net/starck.html I don't remember which Rick played, but I am guessing it was # 5 or 6. They'll appear at the bottom of the U4ea's list numbers 217-222. Jayharrell's has one mix as well, number 48 on his.

Yes Layne, that was where we had the pre and after party for the Starck at the Melrose. Back then just going out to the Starck was a "big event".

  • julian

Darren, that last post is right-on!!.the starck in the early hours, did not compare to the late hours at the club.as you arrived in the early hours of 9:00 p.m.,the club was still, but once the the people were in from 10:00p.m. on,it was a whole different scene, and full for sure!.when i arrived one early evening, the club was a large living room that made me feel like i was at my own place, washing my hands in my own bathroom.private, discreet, and tamed.after 10:00 you were lucky to find a urinal in the bathroom,as all stalls were packed.lights were kept bright, and serene in the early hours.dark, and ethereally wild in the late hours.on top of all this,we had the amazing graphics of video extrordinaire DAVID HYNDS,who created some pretty cool landscapes on all the SONY monitors with color visuals that reflected off the marble floors, sheer curtains, and the infamous waved glass bathroom cubicles.the starck in the dark did everything, but stand still.it literally gyrated, rotated, and bounced.not to mention the pounding sound system, and yes!,even in the bathrooms.unforgettable!.

  • Layne

ISAIAH!!! I remember you! We rode down with you several times from OKC and I think you must have been at "that" party at the Melrose.

  • Darren

The most interesting thing about The Starck Club, to me was that everywhere you looked, there was something interesting or stimulating going on. Just as the lights projected images, we absorbed them, the images that were all around us. I would lose myself sometimes sitting on those white couches. EVERYWHERE you looked, it looked cool. The Starck Club seemed to be the only club where half the people inside were moving around and half were standing still. Most of those nights in 1985 through to the bust were the most blissful and perfect. So much seemed to happen and nothing seemed to go wrong.

What I would do to feel "Madam Butterfly" or hear the original version of West End Girls again.

  • Isaiah

Hey Scott, yes I do remember you. Remember how-back in OKC, back in the day, all we would do is talk about the STARCK. This site brought back a lot of memories. By the way this request is for anyone. Wouldn't it be great if they had a Starck reunion? Just for one night.

  • scott flenner

    Hey Isiah,
This is Scott Flenner from OKC. Remember me? Of course you do. How are you?

  • Bill

Wow! The 80s at Stark!! There will probably never be anything like it again in Dallas. I remember loading up the car with Mark and Gretchen and Terry and Scotty and heading for Dallas from Arlington like it was yesterday.
We were totally decked out with silk and pearls and make up and deathrock and exstacy!! What a blast!
And the music was incredable in that space. It sounded like you were surrounded by waves of sound pulsing through you .(could have been the drugs LOL)
Thanks to Rick Squillante ( I was so sad to hear about his passing) and all the others for making for such happy memories !!

  • David C

    Has the club reopened again?

  • Cameron

It was the "Summer of Love" 80's style. I remeber it well, every weekend it was Video Bar, to Clearview to the Stark. The music and the vibe at the Stark will never be replicated....whatever happened to Roderick?

  • chele808

Wasn't that part of the city called, "Deep Ellum"?

    (sp?)

Nobody would think Dallas, Texas was the place to experience such trend setting events. It was a time of advanced way of living for a southern lifestyle with red necks and people who carried guns in their trucks. Seemed like everybody was bi.

I remember that Commodore computers started their phenomena in Dallas and that's how I ended up there.

*fists closed, arms crossed over above head symbolizing X and swaying to the music*

I meet Mike G and he liked me he hired me .... I was off and running . I didnt really do to many drugs . ( In the beginning or compared to everyone else ) But beeing a young and fertile straight guy with a slightest sense of style . Wow I had found Nirvana . that was it for me girls girls girls Starck was many different things to many different poeple . I fit right in I had already gone through the drug thing in high school . The money making options were abounding and I new from my past experience how to manipulate the situation to my best advantage .The girls they keep flowing just like the cash opportunities . All the nelly fashion queens I could have lived without , I did not yet know about art fashion music or culture beyond the lone star state . I would soon be schooled .I would soon learn how to really live life .....

hey guys, I lived in OKC at the time and when we heard about this new club in Dallas, we knew we had to go. We loved Dallas anyway. I was fortunate enough to be with right people and Roderick ushered us right in. I thought I was in heaven! I knew this was the place I wanted to party all the time. I did my home-work and met a bartender named Todd Roland and all I had to do was call him that day from OKC and that night we where headed to Dallas. I would get on the temporary list and was able to bring at least four people with me. Do you know what a rush that was to be on that list. I never got a chance to say thank you to Todd. If you are still around, thanks..THE STARCK SONG for me was the 8 min instrumental version of "Looking from a Hilltop" by SECTION 25. To me that was the STARCK CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Aloha everyone!

Wow, I can't believe I stumbled onto this site and am having a great walk down memory lane. I loved The Starck. I lived there. I got fired from my job at Lone Star Steel because of that place. Yahoo.

Listening to the podcast right now and getting "chicken skin" = goose bumps. I cannot tell a lie, I was one of those that didn't need to be on the list. I was a nobody from Hawaii and was treated like a princess at The STARCK. Too many memories and they're all fond.

Does anyone remember Michael's Motorcyle? That's where I got my hair done. Michael drove us to Starck in his vintage limo.

We, Lisa Mahan, Geneva Wood, Dina Marsh or Dina mas fina, Joni Nelms, Shaun Smith, Ross Bannister, Edward Kersting, John (?) and others would dance until we closed the place down, maybe even stay after hours. hehe Or, I invited the party over to my place. At that time I lived with Russell Cole of the famous real estate developer family. We lived on Preston Road in North Dallas, if my memory serves me well. Ooooops! Took too many X. lol

Anyway, if anyone remembers me or the people I mentioned, give me a shout. Long live the memory of Starck. The most avant guard euro club I've ever been to. And, no other club has matched the uni-sex stalls. The women's was the busiest.

    A hui hou.......(until next time)

Boy I remember the Starck. I moved to Dallas from New Orleans back in 1988 because of this club ( I was young -hah!). I am glad I found this site. I keep telling my friends who were Starkettes back then it will never be the same. In Austin now and see Brent occasionally. Sorry to hear about Val. I drive by the building when in Dallas. I always danced on the third stair from the bottom left side. I remember my virgn visit, my friend Chad said if they play Janet Jackson Control- just stop and don't dance wait til the next song...

Yesterday I finally found a copy of the magazine ("Brilliant") that Sita mentions in her 7/24/08 post. Seeing that photo of Roderick gave me an instant rush. I always looked forward to seeing what he was wearing. Needless to say, it was always over the top glamtastic. It's a great article. For those Starckies that still live in Dallas, I found the magazine at Barnes & Noble on NW HWY across from NorthPark Mall.

Yes, I was at Grace Jones Ultimate party in 1989! Friends were to get me in somehow that fell threw. But I was standing in the entrance area covered with curtains realizing things were not working my way so I took my opportunity to dash in under a curtain. To the left of the entrance was the bar, which was where I emerged. This was an amazing moment for me as I knew Grace was there and I wanted to meet her.

At that time I was a Goth boy, I had visited Stark during normal business hours a few weeks before. I always had a video camera and filmed the entire club TOTALLY EMPTY! Sadly that tape was lost to a fire. That day I met with the video guys downstairs. They were kind and easy to talk with. We shared tricks and tips, shortly after Stark would close so I never was able to work my way into a job.

From my memories I seem to remember Grace having her shirt off??? I had been to many clubs on the East coast and Stark stomped them all!!! From the bathroom stalls complete with televisions in the ceilings to the towel guys this place was tops. Each sitting area featured projectors with various landscapes projecting onto curtains surrounding the couches!

Yes,I did my share of infamous chemical treatments there! Yes,I danced my a** off yes, I found House music for the first time there. YES IT WAS AMAZING. I was one of the few Goth kids "let in" when I did not sneak in. Yes I felt the New York/Hacienda connection. Nothing will ever quite compare to Stark.

The loss of hours of video and many photos taken there still haunt me to this day! Still in touch with a few loved ones from that time and place I am blessed. Interestingly I was living in Oak Lawn with my father and his partner. This allowed me a view into this world I never would have otherwise found! Truly the Gay scene ruled Stark!

Loved the unique basement where another bar was located behind a single door on the lower dance floor! Always Stark would be a place of special importance, truly a real club!

HEY STARCK PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!! Aquajay here. I'm reading through all of these e-mails, and there are so many of you/us/we "clammoring for the music of the time, and everyone's "scrambling for MP3's, particular songs etc. ... I'd like to here some feed back on an idea. I currently own a small "Indie" record label in Austin, Texas called Halo Records. My roster is nothing even remotely close to the "Starck Stuff". But, as a labor of love I would gladly put out a compilation, if there was enough interest. And, if any one happens to have any "board mixes" of a particular night, that would even be bette. We could even donate proceeds to a charity!!!!!!!!! I can be reached at Halo_Records@live.com

  • aquajay

Hey has everyone found the "Myspace" page for the Starck Club?????? It's great ! Theres music there too!!! Later, Aquajay

  • aquajay

Yes, ANON, the original AquaLounge, was in an upstairs loft on ELM ST. We were the Antithesis of Industry...(which for the permanent record I LOVED, TOO!) I had visited New York, as well as been a regular at Starck, and the original Club Clearview, which was also on Elm way earlier. Anyway-long story short- I modeled IT after the 3rd story of the Dancateria in New york, but with an aquatic theme, and my Art TV's - AQUAVISIONS. A year we had out grown the little 2000 sq./ft space, so I moved it, and by that time, the City of Dallas was catching on a little to the "Afterhours" thing, so, we went legit. For the record, The new one was great for a while, but the regulars were begging me to make it 21 & up...which I agreed with, cause the 17-19 year olds were puking/fighting/couldn't act civilized/ etc., so after another 6 months of aguing with my partners, I made them by me out. I retained the name, trademark, and Art rights, the got the actual club, with lease and liquor liscense. I've never had partners before then...or since then. Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you were there to experience it.

  • anon

aquajay - didn't aqualounge go from a second floor loft to a permanent space? maybe on main? those were some fun parties. it was representative of its time as starck was of its own. small, intimate, sorta secret. it was the like the after party for the 80s.

  • aquajay

I just have to say...I just landed on the "Starck" site a couple of days ago, and ...just as the actual club...I haven't gotten over the site yet, either. I'm so glad to have found it!! This place...the people..the atmosphere.. it was just amazing!!!!! It inspired me, as an entrepreneur to go out and do my thing. I know it did others-ALTHOUGH THEY'LL NEVER ADMIT IT!!!!!!!!!! But those of you who remember me...I never was "The Proud One". I was always gracious just to "be" and to have a place. And for those of you who don't realize it ...The Starck started it all. I mean, I've always been the type who "did my own thing"...and , well, when I walked into that place for the first time, I was "home". That was "the standard"..."The Bar" ...and it has never been matched since as far as I'm concerned, and Jeff Swayney, and Micheal Moore, and Skip McCarter, and others will surely agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THERE WILL NEVER BE A PLACE THAT WILL EVER COMPARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Starck DEFINED Dallas during that time, and that will never go away!!!!!

Hi there! I'm a freelance writer working on a story on the Starck Club. I also happen to have been a regular during the early days of the club, so this site has been a blast.

I would love it if anyone has any photos they wold be willing to share for the article. I'm focusing primarily on the culture of the club, how it was such an amazing moment in time.

You can email me with thoughts, quotes, comments at fullorange@gmail.com

Also, if anyone keeps up with Blake or Blair, I'm trying to track them down.

    Thanks,

    Paul

On the scene: Yaz reunion concert in London
    Jun 19, 2008, 12:40 PM | by Dave Karger

Categories: British things, Concert Reviews, On the Scene

If you're as big an '80s pop fan as I am, you know Yaz. And you love them. Since I happened to be in London this week on "holiday" (as the locals say), I made sure to get my a*** to the Hammersmith Apollo theater to catch the seminal British duo's "Reconnected Tour," marking their first live appearances since disbanding in 1983.

And oh my God, but for one hour and 20 minutes last night, I was back in junior high... just without all the painful tweenybopper awkwardness. When force-of-nature vocalist Alison Moyet (pictured) took the stage and sang the first line of "Nobody's Diary" ("If I wait for just a second more..."), the 25-year lag time since the single's release simply disappeared. Moyet and keyboardist/programmer Vince Clarke (now the mastermind behind another classic Britpop duo, Erasure), performed 21 tunes in all, to the intense delight of the largely gay audience (this was one of those rare events where the men's room line was longer than the women's). The staging was stark — Moyet and Clarke, both in all black, stood on a bare stage save for two video screens showing images from their old videos or graphics reminiscent of Space Invaders. But the visual minimalism only centered the attention on Clarke's brilliant songs: "Mr. Blue," "Bad Connection," and what Moyet called "one of my favorites," "Ode to Boy." (Incidentally, they performed one tune called "Tuesday" which I had never heard. Any fans out there know anything about it? Was it a B-side or something?)

The biggest roars from the crowd came for two of Yazoo's (as they're known in the UK) most massive hits: "Situation" and "Don't Go." After finishing "Situation," Moyet walked over to the famously stone-faced Clarke (the pair hadn't spoken for years when they reunited recently) and hugged him, leading to a bona fide smile from Clarke. But except for the occasional backup vocal, Clarke was virtually silent for the whole show while Moyet, who seemed truly moved by the response, addressed the crowd periodically. At one point, while introducing "Walk Away from Love," Moyet said, "Here's a song we've only recently added to the set. Haven't we?" Clarke responded, "Yes," and the audience went nuts.

As would be predicted, the evening ended with Yaz's debut single, "Only You," which was released in 1982 and has in recent years popped up in Napoleon Dynamite and the British version of The Office. "This song has been very kind to Vince Clarke," Moyet deadpanned. "b******!" After singing her last line, she stood center stage with Clarke and said, "Thank you so much for coming. We are Yazoo!" And we are all the better for it.

Damn, what a flashback! I remember Bob, Dale, Juan, Greg and Craig...and Sita. Memories of Grace Jones chair breaking and Juan and either Dale or Bob having to revolve it by hand underneath. Ran into Bob about 10 years ago at Stanford Plaza and seeing him sing back up with the Memphis G-Spots at Townsend in SF. Would love to know what everyone is doing.

I've been on a quest to find pix from Halloween and Homecoming. I can't remember the pro photographer they hired. All I remember is he was in Deep Ellum. Living in Bay Area now.

    Hey Kelly Palfy Gans -

We had class together at UTA - glad you were able to experience STARCK for those last couple of years - Dallas has seen nothing like it since then. I recall that night with Grace and your "activity" with her. Naturally we were trippin' out - thanks to the fantastic chemicals of the day.

Hope life's been good to you!

  • JimmyG

    Charlie Girl -

You and I must have danced just a few feet away from each other for YEARS! My location on the stairs was RIGHT IN FRONT of the white lacquer wall of the arc over the dancefloor. That way, I could catch myself on the wall on those nights when my eyes were wayyy to crossed to keep my balance! I am sure Rick called me PREEEETY many times when I was departing the club in the wee hours.

My friend Pagan would dance (the STARCK "walk" dance) a few steps above me.

I am still reading the string of comments...and it's bringing back memories. My posse of the day included: The Smith Clan (Tina, Perry, Andy), Cheryl Sharp, Truett Poole, Andrea Power, Jim Newell, Michael Moore, John Walthew and the like.

    Diggin' for pics....

Wow, this forum brought back some great memories for me!

I got taken to Stark for the first time by a girl who lived near my folks house in summer of 84. We were both 20 and so naive. She got me to take X that night and I was transformed! Got me dancing like I never imagined!

I ended up meeting some guy she got it from and before long was supplying some bars in town. Before a month went by, I was on the guest list and treated like a rock star! Too bad I was so young and not really able to appreciate it more than I did. College in Denton during the week, xing at Stark Friday and Saturday. From stale college bars during the week to totally happening scene on weekends. I knew all the bartenders and doormen and they treated me like a friend, which was great! Of course the fact I was showing up with jars full didnt hurt!

Still, it was a magical time. Girls, guys, everyone was nice to me and I had wads of cash, a great tan and zero worries! Lots of older ladies took advantage of me and I was spoiled for years to come!

And yes, dancing everywhere was the norm, which I havent experienced since.

I do remember thinking I was hip and hitting the unisex bathroom the first time. I went to pee and a group of girls just stared and I didnt have a chance! Just zipped up and went back to our little vip tent and had everyone rolling with my tale of paranoia!

It was my summer of love and I am really lucky to have had such a time !

Cheers to all who shared it!

I just came across this site. I had many great times at Starck as well. The Starck Club was a destination! We would plan and primp to look our best. Yes, having friends that worked there sure made life convenient! We tended to attend on Thursdays and Sunday's unless there was a special event. Fridays and Saturdays seemed like a different crowd. I loved the invitations to special parties. I worked at Club Clearview for many years and we shared many friends (and in many cases family so to speak as we shared employees in some cases!)Every night had a different place to be...even Mondays at the Inwood Lounge!

Jay and Karen thanks for all the work getting the music out there. What a trip. Some of those tunes so buried in my memories. Honestly some I thought I'd never hear again.

Hey all! I obviously haven't checked back here in a while. I was totally unaware that there was a problem listening to my Starck collection on Media Master, but it sounds like its figured out now. I have quite a few more LP's, but I just got tired of converting the vinly over to MP3. If someone has a specific request, I'll be glad to convert it and post it on my mediamaster site. I have to limit the time I devote to my old music as it seems to make me want to "get back out there!!!!!" LOL!!! It seems to activate left over MDMA in my system!!! Be good and all is well in Tennessee.

O.K.,let's go back to 1986.I'm living in weatherford and Kim and Mary Staley are my clubbing buddies. They introduce me to dallas and The Starck Club.OMG.The people are so beautiful, and the music is one of a kind.A guy named Mike slips me an "X" pill and I'm blown away. All of my shyness is gone,I want to tell everyone I love them. The music is louder and the lights brighter.IN-Tense.I remeber a dude named Kevin w/ the mo-hawk and leather gloves. Also another mo-hawked guy named Trey.Val was nice enough to pay me a nice compliment...I felt honored to recieve it.I have been forever changed by the Starck expierence. It has made my taste for music redefined.I'm now a mom,and have been frantically looking up all those awesome music.I love the flood of memories and feeling good...minus the "x".

when we went by the Club in January and there was a sign on the front from someone directing the Building Inspector to a side door. this kind of made us think that someone was about to do something with the building. not sure who owns or manages it though.

Love the Dead or alive ticket stub! I have a B52's Bronco Bowl ticket stub somewhere. lol A reuninon would be awesome!!

  • Spot

    ciao ciao glitterati,

Scott (aka spot) here, and not surprised that so many have found their way back to this blog. It was such a cosmic moment that we find ourselves still connected by the incredible, indelible memories (at least the ones we can still remember :o) Can't believe it has been 25 years since it opened.

Does anyone know who owns the building now and if there would be anyway to rent it out for an evening for a "Starck Homecoming" this fall? Maybe Dale could be king and queen again.

    Cheers

  • shawnm

Wow. I have spent a few hours reacing all the posts and checking out the pictures. Brings back some great and fond memories.

I am all in for some kind of reunion. I would also love to know what happened to Giles, Bill, Craig Depoi, Chris, Kevin, Ray, etc...

Sita, you might remember me. I am Shawn McGee...used to bartend (in last picutre that Valerie posted). By they way, Valerie, did we know each other?...my memory is foggy...

So that you know, Valerie is still married to Todd Eckart (who used to manage Club Clearview). They have 2 little girls and live in East Dallas.

Would love to see more pictures, as I have virtually no pics from that time.

    It was a great time...

    Hi Nick,

I uploaded When Doves Cry. Lynn Bahr does not ring a bell. Can you provide more info?

Hi, Nick! How are you doing? Do you still see David and Murray? Since Ragwear closed, I haven't seen so many people! I do still see Miss Sandra and she is well and still living in Richardson. Scott and I still have our house in O.C. I sure hope you are doing well!

  • Sita

Hey Nick, night manager! - along with 7 others... little known fact: the Starck staff, total day & night, was 54 people at a time. That's bartenders, barbacks, security, night managers, dj's, chef, accountant, video tech, ect... and that was bare minimum. What's the news of Bob Amaro? is he back in Dallas? how is the big D these days?

You're welcome, Latch. I will keeping uploading music as I find it, but will probably take a break from this for a while. I just added The Motorcade Sped On.

    Enjoy!

  • Latch

Hi Karen, it's working (full versions) for both your list and Jay's. YEA !! I'm in heaven over here at the law firm where I work. I'm getting these stares like I'm having some kind of episode. Little do they know. Many many thanks !! Latch

  • Karen Kennedy

OK, I think I finally have the solution. Try http://puddyola.net/starck.html I think you can now hear full versions, and pick what you want to hear. I took the liberty of putting Jay's here too.On his you need to use the dropdown menu to go to Playlist/STARCK HITS. And, it works in Safari. Someone else please try it and let me know.

  • Latch

Karen, I e-mailed Mediamaster asking why only 30 seconds of each song plays and not the entire song. This is the response I received from Eric at Mediamaster this morning: "When you are listening to someone else’s music, you can only listen to 30 second samples of that music. When you are listening to your own music, you get the full track. This is due to record label licensing issues. It would be illegal sharing if you could listen to someone else’s entire collection of full tracks. The labels think you would stop buying music if you were able to do that." BTW, that's a great collection of music you put together!!! Latch

  • Karen Kennedy

This is the solution to Mediamaster. You need to send me your email address, I send you an invitation to become a friend on Mediamaster. You have to join MediaMaster but it's free and so far I have not gotten any junk email from them. When the process is complete, you can hear the full versions of the songs. So send me an email to u4ea50@gmail.com with Starck in the subject and I will take care of it.

Or, if you go to my link (http://www.mediamaster.com/player/mediamaster.jsp?uname=u4ea) and select My Radio on the left, then click the arrow next to my Radio in the middle, it will start playing full songs without an invitation, but you cannot pick the order or specific songs.

Jay, if you are still checking this list, please post your email address too, so we can hear the full versions you have.

BTW, I am on a Mac and MediaMaster works well in Firefox, but not Safari, or Navigator.

  • Karen Kennedy

I am working on a solution to the 30 second Mediamaster problem. I will post it if I figure it out.

  • Sita

Great to hear all this news, Karen. Love the photo of us! I think I remember that night: halloween! Ahh the use of hair gel... I will definitely check out the KCRW link. As you said, always interesting. San Francisco radio is not great. I must get a scanner so that I can share some pics... I have some fun ones! Mediamaster does only let you hear a few seconds unfortunately.

  • Karen Kennedy

Liza Richardson is still at KCRW and does a Sat. night show 9-11pm PST. You can listen to it on line at http://www.kcrw.com/ No Starck music, but always interesting.

I am sending John England (bigpoppa) the one mix tape of Rick's I have. If you have any of Rick's tapes, I encourage you to do the same. When I get the CD back, I can convert it to mp3 and put it on the mediamaster site too. Also, I am going to add more to my mediamaster. Jay's tunes only go about 30 seconds and then skip to the next on the playlist, so I will be putting up some of what he has, unfortunately I don't have all of them.

  • Sita

Hi y'all! Fun listening to Karen's playlist. Some of those songs were such favorites at the Starck Club. Yaz - Ofra Haza - Cry, by Godley & Creme - the Blow Monkeys (remember their show?) Running up that Hill by Kate Bush - the SOS Band - Set it Off by Strafe (one of my favorites) Take it back - Good Bye bad Times - even Twiggy's song was great, you really nailed it. What a great time for music then. Songs were so melodic, full of meaning and emotion - before techno kicked in... No wonder people fell in love at, and with the Starck, it was heady times, so was the music. It brought us together. Over the years I managed to collect a roomful of records: about 2000 - thanks to the Music Pool and other fab sources. I brought them to California - ended up selling most, which was soo hard to do, except a couple of boxes. Those are very precious. Vinyl is so bulky! But really the only way to to all the manipulating, scratching. How fun was that: taking hold of the edge of the record and just spinning it backwards! what a laugh, and what a great effect!
Did anyone used to listen to Lisa 'Mad Doll' Richardson's radio show on that indie channel in Dallas? She was a great dj - one of my best friends then. She went to LA to have a show on KCRW radio, it was awesome. That was a while back, maybe she's still there, I wonder... I, myself developed a passion for opera, went in depth into the rarified world of classical music and I marvel at the beauty of the human voice. Nonetheless, I will never forsake my love for the music of the 80's - New Wave! - our Starck music.

  • Bigpoppa

Someone emailed me through my Myspace account about the Uptown Girls "Losing You" track...I have the extended remix if you want it but could not reply to your account as you set yourself up as private.

PS: any Rick Squillante mixtapes cheerly transfered for free through my Pro-Tools system. We are trying to archive the magic for future generations to learn from...thanks!

  • Karen Kennedy

Yes, I did own the record pool. At one point before moving to CA I had over 40,000 pieces of vinyl, which I eventually got down to several boxes, but not before downloading a lot of music from the original Napster, which was legal because I did own the music.
I just put some of it up at http://www.mediamaster.com/player/mediamaster.jsp?uname=u4ea avoiding the same ones Jay Harrell put up. (Great selection there BTW. And I listened to some of Ronnie Bruno's also great.) These are not all necessarily the familiar mixes, but close enough to trigger some memories. Feel free to post here if there's something else you'd like there, I might have it. I'd have sworn I had The Motorcade Sped On, but can't find it. I may still have it on vinyl. A few things I put up were not typical Starck. Daft Punk was one of Rick's projects with Virgin, Walk the Dinosaur was something Mike DuPriest played, and La Wally was mentioned as something Philippe played. Also, I was in so many of the clubs during that period I might not remember exactly what was played where.

Speaking of Rick, I was so wrecked for months when I found out about his suicide. A friend called me from NY the day after. I talked with other of his friends, and we'd all had the same experience. For several years prior we were not able to get in direct contact with him. If I emailed him asking how he was doing I did not get a response, if I asked about music he'd reply. He was never available to get together anymore when I was in NY. No one knows why he did it, but when some of us talked after, we had enough info that if we had compared before he died we might have seen some warning signs. And then Mike's accident. I couldn't believe it. So sad, both of them. That was one thing about being in the music business, it seemed lots of people died. I was surprised when I read through this site how many others have died. I don't see him mentioned, but I heard Brooks Tuttle also died.

I am still in touch with some of the TN guys, Brian Gream, Tracy, et al, and let Brian know about this site so maybe he'll post an update.

Sita, I tried to post a picture of you and me the NYE Book of Love played, but so far it hasn't appeared.

And Charlie girl, I have also wondered about you!

Photo of Sita and Karen Kennedy...

A couple of my close friends who are no longer with us (Ross Carter and Dail Scoggins) gave me a large piece of tye-dyed material that has the dancing Starck man emblem in the middle of it. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I was wondering if it was from one of the theme parties and if so which one was it?

  • christie

Yep! John Petropolis was one of the owners of the Video Bar formally "On The Air". I went out with him a few times. The Video Bar's DJ Eddie actually DJ'd my wedding reception! By by that time I worked at the Esprit store and my husband was with Toni and Guy.

    Hi Sita,

Last I heard of Valerie she had married Todd Eckerd and was living in Oak Cliff. That's quite a long time ago. Teresa might know, I will contact her.

I moved back to Dallas last year. Sorry we never connected when I was in SF.

  • Vicki Y

I have no idea. I saw you mentioned that you had lost touch with her. I really haven't kept up with too many people from back then. John Petropoupls being one. I work for John and his wife Shannan. She was Shannan Henderson back then. She worked and modeled for Rancho Loco. I will try to remember to ask John about Valerie, but I seriously doubt he would know anything.

I really have only kept up with my best friend, Scott Campbell. He worked the lights at Mistral. Back then he always wore vintage suits and had a blond flat-top. And my oldest friend, Sandra Chancey. She did hair back then and hung out with Brooks Tuttle and David Nelson.

  • Sita

Where is Valerie? I would love to know, as I would love to re-connect with her!

  • Vicki Y

He worked at the Video Bar and I believe he dated Valerie Kennedy.

  • Sita

Vicky, yes, that name rings a bell. Was he part of the staff, or a regular?

  • Vicki Y

I never saw Phillipe's video. I would love to see that!

I loved the comments about the confetti on New Years! It reminded me of the year I lost not one, but both earrings in all the confetti. My friend, Gilbert, and I watched the second earring fall to the ground and then completely disappear.

Sita, did you know John Petropoulos?

It was American Soviets! Thanks! I finally found it on U-tube. I liked going to GHQ clothing store in the Galleria. Had the best stuff!

Love that song 'Qu'est-ce qu'il a' by Philippe Krootchey. The video was absolutely hysterical, amazing. Love to see that one again. I have searched for it on U-Tube ect.. but cannot find it.

Anaconda was over by Bachman Lake/ European Crossroads on NW Hwy. The club at the Anatole was Mistral. My best friend worked the lights there for awhile.

Was the song you were thinking of called "American Soviets" by CCCP?

Does anyone remember Philipe Krootchey's song "Qu'est-ce qu'il a"? We managed to track that one down.

Hey all! In ’85 I just move to Dallas from OKC to attend Miss Wade’s
Fashion Merchandising College. I remember going to the Starck Club
Was a special event. I recall wearing big broaches and long strands
Of fake pearls across my chest. One of the students was in a Rubber
fashion show At the Starck. The models were spray painted in gold
and the clothes were Made out of Rubber. Lol. A group called
Kraftwork song Tour de France Was one of my Favorite songs.
    http://kraftwerk.technopop.com.br/music.php
Another song called Young Soviets or it was by a group called Young Soviets
I can’t remember but it was awesome! Also like going to Club Anaconda. I
Think it was in the Hotel Anatole. Oh and one of the students that hung out at
The Starck Club and the Video Bar in Deep Ellum was Susan. She was the
first person I met that had a mohawk.
Now I’m a paralegal and still live in Oak Lawn.

Hi There Uncle Bob - I'm not sure who you are but maybe you could refresh my memory. You sure had it right about the New Year '85 party - then the part that was Prince's private party the day later. The club was knee-deep in confetti, party hats, streamers, champagne corks and yes, stale champagne and brie! We were invited to Prince's concert, wow on the special effects - he was always someone I looked to for ideas on all that lighting stuff. Veri-lights anyone? we rented them shortly thereafter, beautiful!! Of course the music was very exciting. I remember it was snowing in Dallas that night. We opened anyhow and started the 'Day After' parties - dog tags were issued for them.
The private party for Prince - Krootchey was the dj and managed to play almost only his and his buddies stuff: Morris Day (of the Time) and Sheila E were there, his band for his tour. They spent the night on the dance floor doing their dance step routines. Prince was so fancy in his brocade and platforms.
A song that was played - and scratched - to death then was Sheila E 'a Glamorous Life' (just at the glamorous part)

Hi Darlings, Mark Pryle! I have been soo thinking about Valerie (your ex-wife) and was sure that you knew where she was. She was part of the team in the real early years - opening and even before - construction. That phase - construction - took 18 months, you can imagine! Philippe Starck was around for most of it, making sure every piece of conduit was to his specs - truly a genius and I felt very honored to have worked with him. He was a lot of fun, didn't speak much english then, which is a lot of where I came in: I am half french. The statement that he made in an interview around opening about - seeing what the architecture would bring - was so true. The staggering beauty of the place put people into a new and better light, brought out the fabulousness in them. He also said: 'it is an empty canvas, and the people are the art'.
It would be fun to re-connect w/Valerie. I wonder if she lives in Dallas still.
Philippe Krootchey was such a wonderful, fun guy, with such a flair. The video of his record was amazing. I wish I could find it. How much fun did we have, dressing up like that!!
Our theme parties were phenomenal!! We would sit around at meetings and invent this stuff and then whatever stuck would then grow organically. Halloween was like mardi-gras: the costumes were out of this world.
New Years was always one of the biggest nights!! The industrial amount of confetti was staggering - we had a half dozen drums shooting the stuff out like a snowstorm. A woman got engaged on NY night at the Club, her ring slipped off and got lost in the confetti. She came back the next day and found it!
Charlie-girl, hope you are doing great. Thanks for the photos, Tall Jimmy, one of the more fashion-police types, came to San Francisco and became the creative director of Levi's for a while. We ran into each other and had a good laugh, and trip down memory lane.
I know there is a way to make cd's out of cassette recordings that I have of the nights - Rick nights. If anyone has any surefire advice, I could use it. Ronnie, are you there? Peter P, sounds like something you might be into. Are any of you Starckies in the San Francisco Bay area? Love to connect!!

I was there on what I think was Opening Night in 1984. My friend's dad was a banker who helped finance it. We were underage and went very early in the night. It was amazing.
djronniebruno please tell me what the second song is on your podcast. The one after the Abba song. I listened to it while looking at pics of the club and had a complete flashback. That was my favorite song to dance to at Starck. You could totally feel it in your bones.
I was also on the guest list. Sooo fun walking past the line and up the stairs while everyone looked on.
I was in a few fashion shows for Donnie Moda (as we called him)one of which was at Starck. Surely someone has some pics of the shows that were put on there? Toni and Guy people did the hair and makeup-surely there were pictures?
As for the Youtube video of the news report "Ecstacy Rising". Those people were NOT the usual Starck crowd. Could they have set up the scene during the day and not actually filmed real clubgoers? Never saw those types there.
Anyway thanks for the memories. Sometimes I think "Was it really that cool?". Nice to know that, yes, it was. And so were we!

There's my myspace page. With a few Starck photos...I think I remember most of the people. I have so many pics...not going to post them all. I CAN think of people I don't have pics of. I'll have to find the rest.

Whatever happened to Charles and Ken?

  • mychalG

Michael Gilbert here. Wow...talk about a mind rush. It's even funnier to see yourself in pics that other people have. I have somewhere I'll have to post. Would love to reconnect. I've seen Giles G and Darryl Wood over the years. Darryl was actually in my wedding. I'm still in Dallas (Plano) after traveling the country for a few years in the late 90's / 00's.

    Good times indeed.

Hello I remember Nick, Howard, Bonnie, Good Evening, Claude, Mossimo, Marty, Blake, David, Michael, Lewis, Mr. Rick Squillante, Mike Degrace,Craig Dupois, Hutch, Val, Truett, Brent, Kim. .. and so many others. It was truly a surreal experience. You never knew what you were going to get everytime you walked in there. It was always a new adventure. that's why I always felt that if I didn't go I'd miss something. And the music to me was everything.

Im sooo glad I fell into this site. For those of you wishing for more Stark pics I have tons.

Just need hubby to scan them in my mac..LOL

This is the other Charlie girl. I remember Charlie girl! Remeber me LOL I was the other Charlie(platinum head) that worked at Empire and the door at Industry with the Fabulous Skip McCarter and Iman/Paris.

I too was graced a few times to work the door at Stark when Industry would merge parties with them!

My hubby found my "Pandoras box" recently and he said I knew you met and partied with "those ppl" but never really believed you..

I had shoved my precious Pandora under our bed letting it collect dust for over a decade.Because it was too sad for me to look at.

My fondest memories are partying with Grace Jones and Depeche Mode and with all the"PRETTY PEOPLE".. I still have my vip passes!LOL

I feel very greatful now that I saved these pics. Howie and Michael and George are but a few in there.

And oddly Enough Mike D is in there with a 666 next to his face that the camera made in red with flashes.

Talk about a forshadowing of his death its positively eerie seeing it... :(

I have Blake too along with great classics of the moments of the madness hehe.

    Kudos to this forum!

I looked at the M5 site - what the hell did they do to the club? Check out the photos.. I am appalled. Does anyone know of anykind of reunion? I actually have a box of all of the flyers from that era and can't wait to go through them to see what I find. Memories - went out for New Years last night and it is not the same.

I first started going to Stark June of 1986. I had just graduated from college and moved to Dallas and had not made any friends yet. But, the first night I was there I had a new instant extended family with Chet, Chuck, Jill, Michael, Kent, Craig, and all of the others. For the next four years I never missed a Saturday night and many Friday nights. My family was furious with me for not visiting with them during that period, but I knew that what was happening was special and would probably never happen again and I had to soke up every moment I could of it. I also found one my VIP cards a few years ago cleaning house and had it quite expensively framed and it sits in my living room. DICKIE use give stacks of VIP cards to me at a time to hand out to my frinds. I wonder what happened to him? I lost him after he managed Club One.

The latest effort was in 2006..Website does show a "college croud" complete with t-shirts and cargo pants...GAG

Is it now a strip club? I checked out the M5 website and looked at the photos and most of the girls were barely wearing any clothes. Don't people dress up when they go out anymore?
The photos of the interior were OK I guess.
Still nothing can compare to the original.

  • LATCH

For the hell of it I drove by the Starck just to see the entrance and to bring back memories. It's now called M5 (Metro 5). Check out the website and see what you think of the new look. I have to say it looks better than any of the other attempts to revive the space to its former grandeur which we all know could never be done. I remember one attempt at reopening the space. IT HAD POOL TABLES THROUGHOUT !! Oh the Horror !!
Happy Happy Holidays to all !!!

I found a site that touted to be having a Halloween and a New Year's party in 2007...I never heard a thing about Halloween...New Year's Eve, I guess we shall found out ??

  • Sherry

Just read the last thread...is there a NY party there this year? What's the scoop?

  • Matt

I remember my first night X ing my a** off at starck... wow... I still have the vinyl record of RELAX (Frankie Goes to Hollywood) That hit me in the head as i puked my guts out on the dance floor for the last time. Also I have several photos and the ticket stubs from the "Reopening" back in the 90's. Says... The Fabulous Starck MCMXCVI" on it. Ru Paul was there and broke out into a bizzarre rendition of "Dude Looks Like a Lady" while wearing a gold mini-dress and a BIG pink feather boa that left little to the imagination. Dennis Rodman was there also in a hot pink velvet suit and crushed velvet purple hat. It was a forgettable night compared to others there. OK Picts though. Wonder how this New Years Party is gonna be? Lots of hype...I still have my VIP card. Wonder if they'll accept???

  • Chet

Wow! It's so much fun finding this sight! I will never forget my first eXperience at Starck Club in the Spring of 1986. I had just moved to Dallas and my best friend brought me and I did my first hit of X, ever. It was as though the universe tilted and I became one with the club and all of it's inhabitants! Years of being on the guest list, meeting Grace Jones (who showed me her t***), falling in love, hanging out with Rick in the DJ booth, and hanging with our extended family: Chuck, Jill, Doug, Michael, Kent, Craig, and all of the others is so vivid. Remember the Saturday that we couldn't dance because of the bust? All of the after-hour parties? And, the songs: Rock me Amadeus, No Promises, Thorn in my Side, Art of Noise, and Holiday Rap!!!! And the b**** of all waiters, DICKIE!!!!!

  • Benji

Matt and Steve....That sounds right but I can't quite recall for sure. I started hanging around with Steve sometime fall of 1985...after that he was living in an apartment with...er...someone!...near those apartments off University next to Central Expressway. I think they've since been torn down or something.

Last time I saw Steve was in '99 or so. Another person I'd love to hear from!

  • Miss Ya!

Steve Hammer! There's someone I haven't thought about in a while. Didn't he used to run around with Matt? Steve and I were presidential scholars together at SMU--and dorm-mates for a while (Mary Hay, I think?).

  • Benji

    PS

In 1985, I was the tall (6'3"), chlorine-blonde soon to be ex-SMU swimmer who gained brief campus notoriety one night for: 1, being seen kissing a guy on the rail above the dance pit (that was Steve Hammer...and quite a good kiss) and 2, suddenly missing practice and being kicked off the team for that kiss and for my newly adopted habit of "chemically enhanced" dancing that left little time for sleep. :-)

  • Benji

I'm so stunned to find these two pages! How amazingly wonderful! So many people still alive! And I mean this sincerely.

I was there from 85-89. And now I have to go find my Starck hat Craig Depoi gave me.

It will also take me some time to post coherently... woo! I can smell the clove cigarette smoke...feel the cool handrails while "rail dancing"... wandering into the Cold Bar... the thrill of getting on the Guest List... see the "Starck Dust" on my black pants after each night... wonder why I ended up with a starched Starck Napkin in my deep-pocketed Girbauds... so, so, so many memories all flooding back at once.

Starck was a wonderful time for me. :-)

I'd love to hear from Bob Amaro, Craig Depoi, Jeff Hitchcock, Lance McLaughlin...Sherri Sieple (sp?) and all sorts of folks I hung out with then.

Starck may be gone but it certainly changed a whole generation of people and it seems for the better.

I've also got memorabilia about and will see about posting some pics, pics of flyers and my ever-wonderful t-shirts. Someplace I even have an entire box of Starck Club matches... man, those pockets were deep, eh?

    Love and thanks to all,

Unbelievable that I found this site...through the help of a friend. It's been almost 20 years since I last stepped foot inside Starck Club. I was 20 years old (1984) when I first experienced the world of Starck and the thrill of x'ing my brains out while dancing to Vicious Pink, Adam Ant, The Cult, Malcolm McLaren (Madam Butterfly), etc, etc. In 1985, I became a regular and made the famous "Guest List" where if you were on it, you didn't wait in line and the $10.00 cover charge was waved. Of course Dale always tried to mess with me by telling me I was dropped from the guest list and had to pay. He was a character. Rodrick (dressed like Prince) was oh sooooo cool. We hung out at the same after-parties...mostly at Big John's (waiter). Big John was a dear friend. Anyone know if he's still alive? We had a mutual friend, Rick Warren. Rick didn't work at Starck but was a regular like myself.

Also, very sorry to hear little Lee passed away. Lee was a dear friend back in those days. I lost track of him sometime around 1990.

Val was my sweetheart. She would always snub anyone at the counter to wait on me as soon as I walked up. She wouldn't end our conversation just because someone she didn't know wanted to purchase cigs or cloves.

While it's wonderful to read this site and all of the messages mentioning commonly known names of people I knew, it is very saddening to hear of those who have passed. I've learned that Lee is gone as well as Rick and Mike (DJs). Years ago I heard that Rodrick (front door greeter and Prince wannabe) passed away. Also, not sure if anyone knew Scott Balew but he was a major "X" dealer back then and one cool dude to party and hang out with...but heard he commited suicide years ago.

What about Cory? Wore the pink tutu on numerous occasions? He was a trip!

Anyway, those days are long gone but the memories will last me a lifetime. I still listen to many of the tunes as I have them downloaded from various music sites such as Limewire. Remember everyone flocking to the steps and dance floor when the sirens to (I know) I'm Losing You by Uptown would sound off. Then after a while, Rick would get burned out on a tune, put it on just to watch everyone run to the dance floor and then he could bring it to a urrrrrrr screaching halt? Rick was a great guy and one more talented DJ.

Not that any of you would remember but I was the guy you could find either in the cold room or at the top stairs dancing close to my sweetie Lisa Justice. I had basically two dress attires that people knew me by...one night I would wear a red beret, the next a white sailor hat.

Thanks again to the one who created this site. Edward? This brings back wonderful memories from my single life days. Now I have two kids, both boys with the oldest a soph in H.S. Time is moving along and this life passing quickly.

Best wishes to all of you!

OMG...stumbled across this site during a desperate search for a download of Uptown Girls, Losing You. A smalltown GA girl who moved to Big D in 1985 and discovered the Starck during my first week as a newbie freshman at SMU back when you could still buy a tab for 10 bucks at the Ice house on Yale, I felt privileged that Bob thought that Georgia, Andra and I sported a cool enough look to get through the front door...we were working a 1920's vibe with high hair back then...and kept it up for the next two years. If anyone can get me downloads of the music I would be so psyched. I have photos at my parents in the States and will upload them when I can get them sent to me...such great feelings and memories...nothing ever like it since...

Wow - thanks everyone for bringing back great memories. As an art student, I thought I had died and gone to heaven the first time I walked up those stairs and through that big pie slice door into P. Starck's dream aesthetic. Val the ciggy person was one of our life models in drawing class, so it was good to see a familiar face. My connected roommate Kelly got us passes so we never waited in line and got to go to the kitchen loo - not sure why that was thrilling, but it was. I remember us girls taking a slow, giggly promenade around the perimeter of the dance pit, clutching each other, ooggling at cute guys and grinding our toofies. I think I have never drank as much water in one week as I did each evening at the Starck. Then the I'm Losing You siren would blow and the place would just explode!

Leaving Starck into a bluish sunrise was always a test of our coordination and stamina. We really just wanted to sink into the white couches and sleep all day.

Looking back, I didn't really make any quality relationships at Starck - was too into the vibe to concentrate on conversation - but I am really glad I had the sensory and musical experiences that I did there.

I didn't see that anyone had mentioned my favorite song, "Looking From a Hilltop" by Section 25. That was my favorite to dance to! That song would have me running down the stairs in my 1950's cocktail dress and pumps every time!

And did anyone mention "Vicious Games" by Yello? And how about Dale that worked the front door after Bob?

I remember my first time at Starck. April 14, 1984. It was a private party before the club was open to the public. It was also my 25th birthday and my very first hangover (Grand Marnier and champagne don't mix very well).

One of my favorite memories was of a Sunday night where the power had gone out and they weren't letting anybody in the club (but they let us in anyway) and the club was lit with candles, they were serving free champange to everyone and Phillipe was playing music on a jambox. It was so lovely and a little surreal.

And I can't believe you have pictures of Shannan Henderson & Brooks Tuttle & Frank Gonzales! I actually work for Shannan and her husband. And Frank was my neighbor on Brown St in Oak Lawn.

Did any of you go go to Lucas B&B after the club? There was a big group of us that would go. Kathy Clapner, Tim Asher, Scott Campbell (who worked the lights at Mistral), Tim Caldwell, Grant Benton, Jonathan Starr, Celeste Curly and more that I just can't remember off the top of my head.

And Duke Todd, if you read this, I knew you back then. I used to work at Ahab Bowen and you knew my friend, Lisa Black. And my friend, Scott, lived with Pat & Lynn on Swiss Ave.

I don't want to sound too mushy, but I am so glad I was a part of that whole crazy time. It was an experience that happens once. There truly will never be anything like it again. I'm sure it's like being at Woodstock or Studio 54 or San Francisco in the late 60's. You had to be there to really understand just how special that time was.

  • trex

I can't believe I found this page and am reading all of these amazing posts! The night Bob let me through those ropes the first time ... I was transformed ... life was simply never the same.

Sita and Bob ... I can't believe you are here and sharing your stories. BLESS YOU!!

I keep in touch with a few friends from the club, but have lost contact with most: Clay, Steve, Lance ... all of the beautiful boys I used to dance with who made me look far better that I did in real life.

Please let me now if there is a reunion. I will post the only image I have of the club (of myself and a furniture designer from mexico) - sitting on the steps of the back stage.

Milky, do you remember a girl named Kim ?

Who is this anon? Grace did put a nice little hickey on me didn't she? I remember after the concert George grabbed me and wanted us to go down into the lizard lounge and Grace was waiting in there for me...she was laying on the couch smoking a joint the size of a cuban cigar and said " Dahling that was fabulous." ahhh memories...let's have a little Starck reunion....it's time.

  • hgc

Just did a search when the Starck came to mind. I must have been there in the early days. Drinking age was 18 and I don't remember a $10 cover or a discerning doorman. Maybe that's when they were letting just anybody in since I'm nobody. It was very cool with the unisex bathrooms and private party rooms. xctasy wasn't "illegal" and coke was prevelant. Looking back now it brings back alot of nostalgia and appreciation. It was the best club I've ever been to and I've been in clubs from all over the world London LA NY Chicago Berlin etc..
