Turn around. It was on the southeast side of that intersection.

  • Puddin

I am pretty sure it is next to the pizza place.
I will have to look when I drive past it next week.

  • Marie

Sandy not Bernie. Have no clue why I said Bernie.

  • Marie

Thanks Bernie! It's such a bummer that it's now a pizza shop. I'll make sure to drive past it and check it out though. Thanks!

    Hi-

It was on Whitsett and Magnolia. Northwest corner next to the Post office. Last time I drove past it, it was a pizza place. However, I've been in NYC for years now, so it may have evolved into something else.

    Hi Guys-

I've been reading these comments, and it made me realize... Where is the Sugar Shack located again? My memory must have gone away a little bit. But, I remember those days of hanging out at the sugar shack doing the Time Warp and dressing up like Columbia from Rocky Horror Picture Show one night. That was the best. So could anyone please give me the current address if there is one please????

    xx
    Thanks

OMG....The Sugar Shack is what gave my girlfriends and I a place to be a teen, dance and just have a great time !!! We were not from the Valley but that is where our hearts were every Satuday night in 1975, 1976 and even into 1977 !!! My friends and I saw the club go through changes...it felt like it got really more homosexualish towards 77...but we loved Bowie, dancing to the Time Warp and disco in general. Yes, we smoked lots of pot but that was it....dancing, flirting and good, clean fun...!!! A teen's dream....!

Hi Sandy, I am sure I knew you too but too. This many years later I recognize some names but old pictures usually jar the memory fog lol. I lost touch with everyone when I moved to Orange County in 1978. I knew the club scene (at the time The Starwood) would kill me if I hung around it any longer. But Pat Mundy overdosed from what I was told, I guess he never changed. His parents are both deceased too.

  • Sandy

    Jim-
Thanx. Are you still in touch with Pat Mundy's parents? And what happened to Pat? I'm sure I would know you if I saw you because I was up at the pool table many nights each week with Malcolm, Pat, Craig and Kerry.

  • Jim C

Too many memories both good and bad here. Had to add my voice because of all the names. I was legally taken in by Pat Mundy's parents when my mom passed away we pretty much lived at the Shack primarily to find girls and go find a good time. I actually got to know my wife Carol by hanging out here with her and Pat Mundy, Craig Pike, George Simmons, Malcolm Bradshaw, Tim Albright, Leslie Vinson, Jill Tockerman etc. etc.

What a messed up time of my life that I always remember both fondly as the time of my life and a complete fog for a guy who's overall life had pretty much taken a dive losing my family and all. Not to mention the self induced fog. Not much of a dancer we used to hang in by the pool tables, grab some people and head out to Malibu, the beaches, parties ride/race our motorcycles on Mulholland and Laurel Canyon. I vaguely remember meeting Joan Jett (Marie Larkin) and Suzi Quatro was always in too big of a fog lol... As was everyone else.

I saw a note "what were our parents thinking" posted earlier .... Answer - They weren't. Most parents back then just let there kids run wild and boy did we. Glad to see some of you are still alive, too many didn't make it and I don't think I would have either if I didn't get out of LA.

    Peace all,

    Jim

  • Paul Garcia

WOW.... I soo remember this place, my twin brother and I would go with our friends Hubert and Ciro (know also as Cris) I had a great time there, met a few great looking and awsome girls, dated one named Sherry but lost contact. If anyone remembers me contact me. This was the place to go.

  • Puddin

    Thanks Passat,

Getting old so I can't remember her last name. = )

  • passat

    Hi Ted~
I don't know where she is these days, I left LA years ago for Seattle (20 years there) and now have been in NC for 8 years - - would love to know where she is....

  • Ted

    Passat,

Do you know if she is still around L.A.?
I would love to find her.
We were friends for a short while and it would be great to reconnect with her.

    Thanks

  • passat

It was Lexie...... Yip - - I remember her.

  • Ted

I loved the Sugar Shack like most of you.
I drive past it all the time and it brings back memories of dancing and fun.

Does anyone remember a bartender named Lexxie?
    Maybe it was Lexie...

The Sugar Shack was the place to go in the East San Fernando Valley in 1975 and 1976. There wasn't anything else if you were under 21. There were regulars there everynight dancing to David Bowie and The Rocky Horror Picture show, lining up for the Time Warp. The girls that were regulars were 15-16 and gorgeous and posing as bisexual. Who knows? They tended to come from broken homes, middle and upper middle class, and ran wild, staying out late. Weekends everyone and their brother showed up, and the place would be packed.

There was one gal there, 15, who was a ringer for Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman in the 70s) but with a thick mane of reddish blonde hair and every guy in the place would light up when she danced. I've never seen anyone like her. (Her friends were hot, too.) She was Leo, sport fans.

Oh my GOD the memories of the Sugar Shack and The oddyssey And Studio1...where my brother and I danced for a million hours a year. I remember The Currie twins and Joan Jett. So sorry to hear about Sandy. I remember Mark Sloman totalling his Dad's Cadillac Seville in the parking lot at the Shack...on ludes, of course. Michelle Lane, you need to be on this post!!! Chuck E You were the best DJ ever. I wish you could start up a club...will you consider it? Love You all and Miss Our Crazy, Happy times. However, very happy Mom today but I'm so glad I survived all the ludes. I read the earlier blog about a girl passed out on ludes...It might have been me. I loved the bisquits too much! I loved the girls. All of them were so beautiful. I would love to have a reunion. Sorry I missed the one.

Trica Falk was a skinny awkard girl, who turned f'ing hot. She got into some porn mags, which seemed fitting for her, she raged sexuality. I can't believe she died, is it true?

  • JJ

I was wondering the other day if the Sugar Shack will have any kind of showing in the "Runaways" movie. It was, as I have read, where Cherie Curry was discovered.

  • Hal Lewis

Wow what a trip down memory lane, as the years have past the memories have stayed. Some of the best years of my life, and the weird thing is life brings me full circle, my new studio is down the street Thanks for the trip down memory lane

What memories this website brings back and all the crazy things we did. My girlfriend Tami and i would go to the shack every Friday and Saturday. Remember breakfast at the Lousianna Purchase with everyone, Sid, Danny and Corkie. What ever happen to Sid and Danny? Remember going to Sid's and waiting for him and Danny to get ready for the evening what a chore. Spending time with Vicki (she was in my First wedding) Going to see Joan open at the Wiskey. God I could reminence forever.

  • Mark Z. "zigystardust"

Wow, Mari R. good to see your post here, and all the others who have found this site. Guy, Mari and Rusty, great to re-connect with you on FB, too! Lisa, Kendall, Eddie, Rick, Howie, Kelli K., Jana, Julie, Rusty, John Dukmajian (RIP), Cherie, Marie, Sid, Chuck e, Rusty, and my good buddy Mickey who passed back in the day, sort of at the "end of the era". He was my room-mate and motorcycle riding partner. All the above names and so many more make all the twisted-wild-wonderful-eyeopening-unforgettable memories come rushing back. All I can remember thru the 714-weed-soda days! LOL...
Racing Mulholland on our bikes, or in my old Cougar, showing up at The Shack (half tossed), dancing the night into the morning, going to Denny's-Twain's-Du Par's, then riding to Zuma Beach to for sunrise bodysurfing sessions, frisbee/beer/smoking weed all day on te beach, then repeat all the above! Wednesday nights with my Jr. high school girlfriend Laura and Best Buddy Daryl (if all the homework was done) were a bonus! If the folks only knew...maaan.
Well, Rick Sciacca, buddy you were in my wedding, and worked for me at Canoga Jeep back in the day...haven't seen you in forever! hit me up here or on FB if you can, or if anybody has his contact info, or Howie's...etc...please let me know, love to reach out! That goes for anybody who remembers me, too ! Mark Zigler aka: Zigy Stardust
    Long Live The Shack !!

  • Danny

Hey there, wow — I worked as a bartender there for a while: Danny. And, yes, I remember Scott and Chuck E, and my gosh...so many. What a shame no one took photos back then — or videos! I should get out to see Chuck E in Palm Springs. I remember Jay Wear and everyone so well. What a fun time. My email: chateau7@gmail.com What a fun time — and it went by so fast!

  • Gerald P

Yeah, I remember the Sugar Shack! I had a blast there! Many of the guys there were gay, but they didn't mind the straight guys hanging around. It was the only place teens could go and have fun that was open late. I do remember having a crush on Cherie Curry (Obviously from afar).
I also remember the "Time Warp" and everybody running on to the floor to dance.
I was never a good dancer, so I spent most of my time upstairs playing pool.
Did anybody see there is a "Runaways" movie coming out this spring? Looks real good. I wonder if they will mention the Sugar Shack.
Oh and does anybody remember one of the owner's firebird. I would have killed for that car. I used to drive a red and white 71 El Camino. good times.

  • gretchen corrales

I saw him in 1987 at the Roxy working with a band and he seemed really happy??

  • Rusty Stimson

Wow, the shack memories live on even though all the ludes fogged a few...
What great times, making out in the parking lot, and upstairs near the fire-pit. Smuggling in Olde English 800's (beers), in my Chemin de fer pant legs. A few tussles out back with other waisted "Shackers". I think John Deukmajian is dead, Rick is a prop maker who I worked with not long ago...
    Great memories!!!

  • Linda

    I remember the Shack well!!!

Doing the Time Warp for the first time and laughing hysterically.

Running to Cherie after she joined The Runaways and asking for her autograph even though I knew her before that...lol

The music, the fashion, and those ludes!!! Such crazy (but fun) behavior!

I am SOOOO settled now! Ah, memories!

I remember the Sugar Shack well. I met and then dated my first boyfriend there. His name was Paul Anderson, and he was one of the doormen who worked there in those days. What memories I have. I was still in high school then, (Grant High). God the seventies were so crazy. I still look at old photos from that period, god, some of the get-ups I used to wear, I looked like a total s***......Oh those were the days!! Some other fun discos I used to go to were, The Odyssey on Beverly Blvd., The Paradise Ballroom on Highland Ave. in Hollywood, and GenosII, which was upstairs in a little corner shopping center at Vine St. and Santa Monica Blvd. Does anyone else remember any of these places?? We then used to go to Arthur J's coffee shop after the clubs, and that used to be at the corner of Highland and Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. Some of the people I used to hang out with were Paul Anderson, Justin Carpenter, Kathy Elkins, Bob Smith, Chuck Crump, and his brother Johnny Crump, Alan Weiner.....anyone remember any of these people??

  • LaDonna H.

The shack!! Oh yea, where it all began. The late nights of dancing till you dropped. Doin' the time warp and ch ch ch cherry bomb! I went to Grant and No. Hollywood high and couldn't wait to hit the dance floor every weekend. Craig Pike stole my ludes I had him hold for me(how dumb was I?)I remember Howie Goldman. Rick Scicca, John Dunn, Guy Herman. Skip Buccola, Don and Kenny Shapen and I hung out with my friend Julie Osborne who has since died along with Pat Munday and Malcom Bradshaw. If you Join facebook there is a "I went to the sugar shack in the 70's" group! Thanks for the memories!!!

  • debdexter

The Sugar shack was my home away from home! I would sneak out of the house and hitchhike or walk to meet my friends, we'd dance until all hours of the night...

When my mom noticed that i was missing from my bedroom, she would drive up to the door (blocking the entrance) of the Sugar Shack in her bright blue station wagon and LAY on the horn for me to come out. I remember my porky 12-year old brother yelling my name down the long corridor and my friends finding me on the dance floor telling me that it was time to go...

Wow so many years and so many memories. I went to O.L. with my older and when it became the Shack she was glad to have a place to dump me and my best friend Lisa off. Anything to get us out of her hair. What were our parents thinking?? Our parents would drop us off and pick us up right in front of the door. Didn't they notice hundreds of stoned kids wandering around the parking lot? Did they really believe that we just went inside and dance? Suckers!

OH my god this is great! the Sugar Shack
was one of the best times in my life. being so young I had so many great memorys me & my friends dancing the whole nite. Meeting so many guys making lots of friends. I remember I had two groups of friends, Israeli's & spanish.
I remember there was a very short guy, wearing a little t-shirt (no sleves)looking at him self in the mirror & dancing flaminco style and stairing at himself while everyone was dancing. It was hysterical. I always looked forward to friday & saturdays nights meeting my friends there. those were special days for me. I remember the day Sugar Shack burned down. I still remember that day my girl friend stayed the nite at my house and we heard the news. It was such a shock that was the last day we were ever there again. Than we all went to a nite club on ventura blvd. I think it was called "My Uncles, or "the point after" I guess im getting older my memory is going (just joking)its great to know there people still out there that remember these special times.
    take Care, B

  • maxeythecat

Oh my God, I remember the Shack so well....going there with my best friend Terri as many nights as we could manage to sneak out of the house before her dad would confiscate the keys to her Honda Civic, getting ripped to the t*** on Quualudes and dancing the Time Warp and being just 16 years old and having Rodney Bingenheimer hitting on me....remembering it getting shut down because the locals were tired of underage kids creating a public disturbance and because the music was just too damned loud....oh the wonderful escapades of teenagehood!

  • Dude

I remember so many beutiful girls.

One time asked one of the Runaways if they wanted to F.

She said F. You! And the bodyguards almost took me out.

I explained it was all about free love. Still at "15ish" I wondered why I couldn't pick up on the "older chicks". I was irresistable! Still, I would have liked to make out. Hell! I wouldn't mind making out with any of them today!

Seriously, as a film maker...it needs to be done!

None the less... I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A REUNION!!!

Whoa...maybe some memories should be forgotten.

Still, I'll bet anyone...the super cute girls back then ARE STILL HOT!
    /s/
    Not Kevan, the other guy.

  • Gary

Who else can remember some of the GREAT songs that Chuckie Starr used to play. I remember: "Daddy Cool" by Boney M, "Devil's Gun" by C.J. and Co., "Shut Out - Heaven is a Disco" by Paul Jabara, "Cocomotion" by El Cocco, "African Queens" by Ritichie Family, "Hit and Run" by Loleatta Holloway.

Why am I also thinking Kaleidoscope -- at 12458 Magnolia Blvd in North Hollywood?

  • Sandy

The shack was the best! A moment in time so great it still resonates today. I remember getting laid in the parking lot with a girl I met a minute before. Dancing the time warp, making out on the couches upstairs. Check E, Starr, you were unforgettable. I remember seeing a girl pass out on the dance floor, I think she died, poor thing. 2manyludes!!Spandex rules!

A group of us teen local Students from Grant High School used to go on Wednrsday nights. My parents would come by at midnight if I didnt have a ride and pick me up before midnight. I remember Costume Party one Halloween that my girlfriend at the time Valeree dressed as Chinamen. We had some great times there. There would be lip sinc and dancing to the old Bowie glitter rock and the Time Waqrp from rocky horror show would be done in unison. 1974-1977 were great years. I still cant believe how my parents allowed me to go out on a school night to a disco.
It was a real nice crroud, the baterder was so cool, I firgot her names.
I wil look for the photos to post.

    This just in......

Sandy West, 47; drummer for the influential all-female rock 'n' roll band the Runaways
    From the Associated Press

    October 24, 2006

Sandy West, whose ferocious drumming fueled the influential all-female '70s rock band the Runaways, has died. She was 47.

West died Saturday night of lung cancer at a hospice in San Dimas, east of Los Angeles, her manager, Mara Fox, said. West's illness was diagnosed a year ago.

West was only 16 when she co-founded the Runaways in 1975 with singer-guitarist Joan Jett.

Along with band members Lita Ford and Cherie Currie, they had such hits as "Cherry Bomb" and "Born to be Bad."

"We shared the dream of girls playing rock 'n' roll. Sandy was an exuberant and powerful drummer," Jett said in a statement. "I am overcome from the loss of my friend. I always told her we changed the world."

Born in Long Beach in 1959, West was raised in Huntington Beach and was truly a California girl, splitting her time between surfing and skiing, Currie said.

After West's grandfather bought her a drum kit, she propelled her athleticism into music.

The Runaways headlined shows with such performers as Cheap Trick and Tom Petty as opening acts.

After the band's breakup in 1979, West continued to perform as a singer, guitarist and drummer with the Sandy West Band. She also released a solo album.

"Sandy West loved her fans, her friends and family almost to a fault," Currie said in a statement.

"It will never be the same for me again to step on a stage, because Sandy West was the best, and I will miss her forever."

West completed her memoirs before she died, and Fox said she hoped to get the book published.

West is survived by her mother, Jeri Williams; stepfather, d*** Williams; and six sisters.

A private service for family members is scheduled for Saturday.

A public memorial in Southern California for friends and family is pending, Fox said.

Such great memories of both The Other Side and Sugar Shack. Remember a group of us dancing, lipsinking and acting out a medley of David Bowie songs. Going to a coffee shop after closing, with a group to listen to Chuckie telling his stories and laughing my a** off. Thanks Vicki and Cherie for coming to American Bandstand with me. Last I heard Vicki moved to San Juan Capistano and I saw Cherie on Rodney documentary, talking about how she refused to eat dog food in a snow for him. As for me, I went on to found the company that makes Wet Lubricants (now available at your favorite pharmacy chain) StaysWETLonger.com. I am now good friends with Gary Steinberg (has another posting here), but we did not really know each other at that time. Happily living in Valencia now with my partner Arturo. Travel a lot on business now. Writing this from Berlin.

Best wishes to all that got to share this great time in our lives.

Wow...that's really going back. I worked at The Other Side as a bartendar when it burned down. Immediately, we opened at The Sugar Shack in North Hollywood. I'll never forget the little white shorts they had us wear. :) Yes, and partying with the girls that would a couple years later would become The GoGo's and The Runaways was cool. It's good to hear that some of us are still around!

Today, for fun, my partner and I publish Circuit Noize, a magazine about the Gay party circuit.

Oh geeze, the Shack! There are SO many stories to tell... like Shelia finding a deadman next to her car on New Years Eve... I believe 1977 in the parking lot across the street... we could not leave the Shack until 3:30 a.m.!
Or the laughs we had with Sid the coat checker... and Vicki and Danny at the Bar. All those nites of going to Vicki's apartment after the Shack and staying up all hours!@
Dancing with Marie and Cherie... me being too young to realize that women hurt down there too when you kick em.. dancing to "Your Mama Won't Like Me" with Cherie then doing a high kick and slightly kicking Cherie in the crotch... as she bent over she gave me that EVIL CHERIE eye look! Oh the memories.

after the Other Side a gay disco burned down in 1975 the owners Chris Cox and Steve Harvey opened the Sugar Shack on Magnolia Blvd in north hollywood. Rodney Bingenheimer and Kim Fowley were frequently there and chuckie starr (dj) would always open and close the night with...there is a little place across the tracks which everybody calls the sugar shack... oh yeah, i worked there as a bartender though we only servednon alcohlic beverages (to the public)..

The Sugar Shack was a blast to go to, the DJ Chuckie Starr was great! - - This was also the hangout for the Runaways.
