1986 I somehow found myself in Dallas for 3 months (from NYC)--4001 was just a crazy good time. Dancing by myself, dressed as Desperately Seeking Susan era Madge...sigh...

The first time I ever went to a gay club was 4001 on Christmas night, 1981. Had the time of my life but was a serious student and didn't go again until summer of 1984. Became a fixture that summer and enjoyed the shows on weeknights. Lily White was visiting from Atlanta and totally cracked me up with her rocker chick look. Went there a little in 1985 and met my first serious boyfriend on the dance floor while "Pretty Mess" was playing. Moved away and it was gone when I came back.

    Wow...what fun.

I came out in summer of 1982. The club before this was Village Station....where this occured.

When they re-designed the Village becoming 4001 (after the address) it blew people away. Village was a country bar gone Gay Bar....when Frank Cavin re-did this....God help the Bar comnunity....It set the standard for Club design in Dallas....and other cities too......Design was everything....and set us all up for Mistral, Tango, and the Famous Stark Club.

Sadly, James Griffith passed a few years back. He was one of the best. I remember getting my first mixtape from 4001, he had mixed berlin "s*x" into the break of Madonna "I'm burning up" to make it as though Madonna was singing the lines "I'm a Sl*t." So it was like "I'm burning up...I'm a sl*t." Very well done. Extraordinary talent. FLAWLESS TRANSITIONS.

This club was originally The Village Station, the first gay club I ever went to. I walked in, ABBA's "The Visitors" was playing, a friend put a bottle of poppers under my nose, and I knew my life had changed forever. A few years later I would DJ at 4001, where I was the first in Dallas to play "Beatbox" by Art of Noise. (Thanks, Metamorphosis Records!). 4001 was also where I tried Special K for the first time. This was around the time Starck Club opened- Dallas was about to get really crazy...
