DiscoMusic.com member and former Disco DJ Jay Negron had this to say about The Forbidden Fruit:
The first time I went to a club, I was 16 yrs old, snuck in with a fake ID. (and I had these long sideburns)
It was called "The Forbidden Fruit" and it was on 81st & Central Pk. West in NYC.
The DJ was playing with 2 turntables--no mixer--just a toggle switch where he would go from one table to the next.
The hot songs (audience response) were:
"Get On The Good Foot" - James Brown
"Think" - Lyn Collins
"Soul Makossa" - Manu Dibango
"Right Place Wrong Time" - Dr.John
"Life & Death in G&A" - Abaco Dream
"It's Just Begun" - Jimmy Castor Bunch
"Don't Bring Back Memories" - Four Tops
"I Can Understand It" - New Birth
"K Jee" - Niteliters
"Jingo" - Santana
"Woman" - Barabas
"Why Can't We Live Together" - Timmy Thomas
"Thank You" - Sly & The Family Stone
"You're The One" - Little Sister
As you see it was mostly funk & R&B.
The strobe light was flashing, all the multi-colors were on, people were hooping & hollering, (it was a DISCO and that was Disco Music)and all I could do was watch the DJ.
He looked like he was having the best time of everybody!!!
Please note that in the interest of fairness, the names of DJs and staff are listed in alphabetical order.

Your Dad and my Dad were partners in a club. It was called the Chez Jose, across the street from the Museum of Natural History. My Dad's name is Bob Tirado and he owned a couple of places. JJ's, Casablanca in the Riverside Plaza Hotel , and Casablanca on 52nd and Broadway.
I think I actually came to see you in a play in high school. I think it was West Side Story.
Your father loved latin music and Frank Sinatra. In fact, your last name is Sinatra spelled backwards. Your Dad also catered to the Black community and he had the New York Knicks constantly at his places. Your Dad was my Dad's mentor and we should get them together.
Minerva and Marvin Ginsberg also danced and drank at the Casablanca, and my parents gave me a job as a bartender when I was 16, so I remember her like yesterday. Minerva was just incredible. She must have been anywhere from 29 to 35 at the time and she was beautiful and could dance incredibly. Light eyes on trigena skin, she had the brightest smile in the joint and was always the most popular person in the room.
My name is Matt Tirado and I'm on Facebook as Adam Matthew Tirado, and I can be reached @ 646.442.0636...I hope things are well with you and your family.
I just happen to look online to see what i can find out about my fathers old clubs...
My dad ( Joe Artanis) was the owner of the forbidden fruit..and other clubs...Latin Gallery , Honka Monka...ect
I remember going there during the day with my dad.. when i was little..I remember the cups of the forbiden fruit had a picture of adam and eve with the apple in red...
Anyway just thought it was nice to see people talking about it..
I am going to show him...
He still loves talking about the good old New york days ...
Forbidden Fruit was at 50 West 77th st in the space that is now Scaletta Risorante. Was closed by neighbors who objected to noise and its "scene" in March 1973
Please make note that my name on my comments will be Tony Abbott rather then Anthony Abbott. Thank You.
I am having Major trouble logging in.
Grace Walter and willie were their names. The 2 of them were like fixtures there.
Hi Grace Thanks for the reply. Your correct ,Minerva was Marvins wife name. I met her once. I started as security with friend James. He was very tall bodybuilder. strong and drove a orange Porshe. We were there 4 nights a week for over 1 year. I remember these 2 brothers Willie, tall.long black hair, straight down to his a**,both of them. They were from Spanish Harlem. So many others.Marvin was really good to me.He took me everywhere with each new bar. Do you remember Joe Artanis,he was the money man. Sinatra spelled backward.Great guy.Nich talking to you Grace.Best of life . Anthony
This message is for Anthony Abbott (Tony). I may know you? Marvin Ginsberg married Minerva years ago. I don't know if he is still alive or married to her. Do you know "Mama, Cookie, Lulu? Are you familiar with Taggaris? Grace

We were at Forbidden Fruit- moved there after Sanctuary. It was also a juice bar. Music was great Jimmy Castor Just begun and Your The one for sure. I even think I remeber Walter and his shoulders was he from West New York?
Forbidden Fruit was one of the first discos I ever attended. I was 16 years old. Francis was the D.J. and I loved his music. The songs I clearing remember were Think, Get on the Good Foot. I used to love to dance with a guy named Willie. He was a great dancer. My friend went out with his brother Walter. Walter used to shake his shoulders when he danced. He always wore a hat...he was very handsome.
Been there...done that!!
