Tropicalia was an elegant, mirror wall and ceiling in the main room, shiny silver dance floor.
Excellent colorful light system.
Tropicalia catered to an elegant crowd in the beginning, (Barry White, Margot and Muriel Hemmingway and numerous models were regulars)--the well to do Brasillian crowd took it over as its own home base.
Peter Martins was very particular in letting people in. Once Studio 54 was in full swing the crowd moved on and Peter was not so choosy at the door. In the last year and a half it catered to the 'BBQ crowd from the outer borroughs.
Tropicalia closed in early 1980 when the property was sold to Real Estate.
