Pier 9 / Pier Nine a.k.a. The Pier was a two story building with ground floor round dance floor. Predominantly a gay disco although straights visited it as the popularity of disco skyrocketed. Upper level had 2 round dance floors. A long stair case separated both floors. Entrance to the building was BETWEEN both floors. Lasers and light show spectacular.

Popular DJ: Kurt. In its early days, had a restaurant on the lower level with TELEPHONES that connected the tables. People could call one another directly between the tables. Remodeled around 1977. Memorabilia and T-shirts were sold there in gray plastic bags with the bar logo.

Competed with the Lost 'N Found about 5 blocks away and the Grand Central, which closed about 1976. Another set of competitors: The Court Jester and the Washington Square, both of which opened circa 1977-78. Author of this piece still wears the Lost 'N Found Sweat Shirts, T-Dance T Shirts, and has a souvenir gray plastic bag.

SOME OF THE DATES FOR ALL OF THIS HISTORY OF GAY BARS, AND LIFE BACK IN THE 60'S AND 70'S IS ALL WRONG. NO ONE EVER SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT ONE OF THE FIRST BARS IN D.C. WAS THE CHICKEN HUT, OR THE REDSKIN LOUNGE !! BY THE WAY FRANKIE'S NAME WAS FRANKIE CATCHATORY, AND HE WORKED AT THE PIER WHEN IT FIRST OPENED, ALONG WITH JESSIE. WE ALL OPENED THAT BAR. THE PIER OPENED IT'S DOOR ON APRIL FIRST, 1969. I LEFT THE PIER, AND OPENED A SMALL BAR CALLED THE PUB NINE UP ON 8TH ST. RIGHT NEXT TO THE PLUS ONE. I GOT ALL OF THE OVER FLOW FROM THE PLUS.

    For Lori --
You can find "Rain" by Dorothy Morrison by searching Youtube. I found a good copy there.

Any others you need, give a shout. I think I have all of them now!

I am trying to find the song you mentioned, "RAIN" but I am not having any luck. I just remember the phrase, "it's going to Rain" and everyone loved that song.
I have no idea who performed it only that I loved it.
    Can you help?

I was dj at the Lost and Found around 1973/74. The long-time dj was fired (still don't know why)
and I lucked into the job. I still have all of that music, plus some missing songs I'm now finding on
the net. (“Rain”, and some others.)

I'm now trying to find someone in SW Florida interested in being entertained by this stuff.

I used to walk over to Grand Central on my Sunday lunch break, since I had about a 12 hour shift on Sundays. Don Culver was the guy killed on the roof while decorating. One of the mangers was Frankie, and I can't remember the name of the other guy.

The parent company was Capitol Hill Cabaret, and they owned both the Lost and Found and either the Pier 9 or Grand Central – not sure which. The Lost had an excellent restaurant. By the way, there was a PEPCO power generating station at Buzzard Point, across from the Pier 9. That's where I worked during the day.

I met my partner of (so far) 36 years while working at the Lost.
