Mabel Murphy's was an upscale club. I worked "after hours" as a dj. Bob Baldwin was the resident DJ. I was spinning at a small club in Tempe called Star Systems and worked Friday and Sat after hours. It was one of the first clubs with a VIP both, privacy glass, champange all the trimmings.

After Bob left to go to the Ride and Rock resort I played for another year or so. I had the pleasure of being one of the DJ's able to play Patrick Hernandez's "Born to be Alive" as a test press. Bob came by with an A/R guy and we tried it out at 3am on a Sat night. I also spent time with Destination "Move on Up". The Southwest record pool had many talented DJ's and broke alot of songs, while we weren't NYC or Miami, we held our own. We didn't have Tom Moulton, but we had Jack Witherby responsible for Ami Stewart's "Knock on Wood" and a few other classics.

I visited Phoenix after 30 yrs and found Mable Murphys is now in Old Scottsdale in the same space that Mingles was. Mingles was were the industry people went to have fun!
