Sutton Place was mostly a gay men's disco, but plenty of straights went due to the best dancing and music in the Twin Cities. There was a cover charge at the door, and the disco was on the second floor. The guys there taught us how to dance- esp "The Wrap." The floor was stainless steel and it would fill for the Sutton Line Dance shoulder to shoulder: a virtual sea of people moving in unison. The most awesome dance experience I've ever had. It closed suddenly 1979 or 1980 and became a black club overnight.

Best music (DJ Jimmy Wessels), best dancing, best lighting (and fog machine), best dance floor, best dance partner (Michael Gramling, RIP), too many other "bests" to count. The perfect place, and the perfect time, and the perfect group of people...a perfect memory. Gone, but NEVER forgotten.

I was so lucky to have been there.

I ditto the above info... it was a hangout for artsy theater types... mostly gay but not totally. A fair amount of coke tooting went on but that was the 70's! I heard the shutdown/change of ownership was due to a drug investigation... unconfirmed rumor.
