Penrod's Beach Club was a very Hot, Humid and wide open to the beach, but it always felt very Tropical and great Dance Music. I believe there's something else there now.

Description: July 7, 1984 the night of the Penrod's shooting tragedy. My brother's band "Ground Zero" played there for 2 weeks. I believe that happened at the end of their first week there. This is a front shot of Penrod's on the Ft. Lauderdale strip. This photo is from a newspaper article.
........I WORKED AT PENRODS AT THAT TIME, I WAS AT THE DOOR WITH KENNY WHEN THIS HAPPENED ! WE WERE CHECKING ID's AND NEITHER ONE OF US HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT HAPPENED. I REMEMBER 2 GUYS BEING TOSSED, AND WHILE STANDING ON THE SIDEWALK IN FRONT, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE 4 STEPS, ONE GUY WAS SO ENRAGED HE WAS CRYING ! HE WAS SAYING HE WAS '' GONNA COME BACK HERE AND FUCKIN' KILL SOMEONE '' HE HAD A LOOK IN HIS EYES THAT I'VE SEEN BEFORE, I FIGURED HE MIGHT TRY TO COME BACK AND BE A PROBLEM, BUT THEN THEY JUST SIMPLY LEFT !! A FEW MINUTES LATER, A CAR PULLS UP IN FRONT AND STARTS SHOOTING INTO THE FRONT DOOR ! I REMEMBER SEEING KENNY LEAN OVER, I WAS SO MAD, THAT I ACTUALLY STARTED WALKING TOWARDS THE CAR !! HOW I WAS NOT SHOT IS BEYOND ME !! THE CROWD SPLIT, THE CAR DROVE AWAY, I TURNED AND SAW KENNY DOWN, AS WELL, THEY SHOT AN ENGLISH PARATROOPER WHO WAS ON LEAVE, WHO WAS TALKING TO ME AND KENNY A FEW MINUTES EARLIER !! HE WAS SHOT IN THE LEG AND IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, THEY ALSO HIT A GIRL WHO WAS ON VACATION ? I REMEMBER THIS LIKE IT WAS 20 MINUTES AGO !! I REMEMBER BEING CALM, WATCHING EVERYONE RUN AND PANIC, WHILE SAYING TO MYSELF, '' THEIR GONE, IT'S OVER, CALM DOWN AND CALL 911 '' HONESTLY, IT WAS PROBABLY THE BRONX IN ME THAT GAVE ME THAT ATTITUDE !! I WAS IN FLA PLAYING BASEBALL, BUT IN THOSE DAYS YOU DIDN'T MAKE ANY REAL MONEY, SO I HAD TO WORK A COUPLE OF NIGHTS A WEEK TO MAKE A FEW EXTRA BUCKS.. I BECAME FRIENDS WITH KENNY, HE WAS REALLY A GOOD GUY, HE TALKED ABOUT SCHOOL AND HIS FAMILY, BOTH WITH APPRECIATION AND LOVE !! I'M SURE HE IS MISSED !! I THINK ABOUT KENNY AND THAT NIGHT EVERY SO OFTEN, AND I STILL, TO THIS DAY, DONT KNOW HOW I WALKED TOWARDS A CAR, WITH A GUY SHOOTING A .357 MAGNUM IN MY DIRECTION AND BEING AT FIRST BASE THE NEXT DAY !!
I moved to ft."liqourdale " in the. Early 80's
I hit penrods for my first club. I didn't "dress for
occasion. I walked in wearing my Tony Lama boots
Wrangler jeans, PRCA (professional rodeo cowboys
Association) jacket) jacket and my big a** belt buckle
That was the size of a hubcaps on a 75 Chevy.talk about sticking out like a turd in apunchbowl
I had a great time though
Weird thing was, we all thought it was someone shooting off fireworks left over from the 4th of July.
It was definitely that night. No mistake. July 7th, 1984 about 1 am. I was about 5 feet just inside the front door leading out to the front patio that looked out onto the strip and ocean. I have the newspaper article and if you look closely at the picture of the marquee you will see Legs/Mini-skirt contest and below that "Ground Zero" my brother's band.
Some story there Lori. I seem to remember that, though I don't know if I was on the strip that night. I was ALWAYS there until they started closing the strip down little at a time and the bar scene was dying a slow death. After the strip, I basically hung at City Limits, Playpen South, Button South, and once a week or 2 at Summers. Im in Vegas now and continue enjoying those types of scenes, but if they were all still open, I might not have moved here......
So long ago. I remember the did the Legs/Mini-Contest in a room off to the right as you walked in the front doors and the band played in another room in the back. I don't remember if it was called the "basement". I'll have to ask Gary my brother who was the lead singer of "Ground Zero". Yeah, it was a chaotic and terrible night. Ken was only 23 and studying to be a lawyer. The cops stated they don't know why the fight broke out but my brother was standing at the bar between sets and clearly heard the two guys arguing over a damn bar stool. Just think, a young guy died over a stool. I think they did finally catch the guys. They drove North up Atlantic and stopped right in front of the club. The passenger sat up on the door with the gun on top of the hood of the car, then shot 5 rounds into the crowd. It was total mayhem. I remember the club was booked to full capacity and being crushed so hard. I'm only 5'2". I thought if I fall, I'm dead meat. It was on CNN that night so we all had to call our parents and let them know that we were okay just in case they had seen the news. Hell, my brother's band's name was on the marquee getting national coverage. I had a blast hanging with the band but I want Ken to be remembered.
Wow, Lori...how sad. Yes, I was there many a night. Was this when the band performed down in the 'basement'? Penrods opened up a downstairs and usually during Holiday weekends and Spring Break. The dance area was nice as well, and if you just wanted to chill, to sit in the lounge wasn't bad either.
This is regarding Penrod's in Ft. Lauderdale on the strip. My brother's band "Ground Zero" played there for 2 weeks during the 4th of July. The band fed me numerous shots to get me in the Legs/Mini-skirt contest. I can't believe I did it. I would have won but the owner of Penrod's girlfriend won. I later learned she always won. It was cool because some guys pulled me over and said I should have won. That meant more to me than anything. Right after that all hell broke lose. That was the night 2 guys got thrown out for fighting over a "bar stool". The said they would be back and they did as promised but with a gun. They shot 5 shots into the crowd standing on the front patio at the entrance. Unfortunately, Ken Raab (nice guy) was shot to death. He was only 23. I had just talked to him a few hours before. 2 other people were hit but not fatal. R.I.P. Ken...you have not been forgotten. This happened July 7th around 1 am 1984. With the exception of the Penrod's shooting tragedy it was an awesome club. We had a hell of a good time!
The one on South Beach was terrible. Went a few times. Waste of my time. I felt the one on Ft Lauderdale strip was just awesome. Facing across the beach. Really good looking people in the Dance Room. The Lounge was quiet if you just wanted to get away from it was a perfect place to 'rest' or chill out. They had a pool area from the lounge room just thru the doors. That was a great area to be. Right in the middle of all the fun bars and clubs on the strip.
Penrod was a nice sports bar at the begining of the strip in Miami Beach. It was was right by the ocean. It had a pool area which was used for bikini contests in the summer and the back was open to a sandy area where you could play volley ball. Right after the sandy area you had an entrance to the beach. At night, the club was open on the second floor with a pretty good sound system.
There was a Penrods on Lauderdale strip. I would stop in there as well on my many walks to the other clubs up and down the stip. It was basically a dance club. There were a few rooms being it was attached to a hotel facing the beach. There was the Dance club side just to the right as you walked in, very packed on the weekends..too packed. On the left was more of just a lounge, quiet with constant Reel to Reel music, and at one point a downstairs, rock bar. Bands played there during Spring Break...was hot and humid there...whew!!! I found it much better than the one on South Beach(Point). Email me any memories of the strip bars and clubs in Lauderdale....firstname.lastname@example.org....Chuck
Not real sure where the original one was, but I tended bar at the kiosk where the bathrooms are (14st.?)for a volleyball tournament. Got arrested for selling beer to a minor..apparently, the cops had sent this guy (5'10"- 170lbs.-mustache/unshaven) to buy a beer from me,turns out the guy was under age. Entrapment??? Gotta love those MB cops........
yeah there was, right on the the ocean, the strip, that one was probably even there first, and I did get to visit it, but since I'm a Dade clubber Ocean Drive was more frequent for me.
Wasn't there also a Penrod's on Ft. Lauderdale Beach?
