Christopher's could easily lay claim to being the FIRST DISCO of any kind on Planet Earth--I kid you not. I remember reading about this place in my dad's Playboy mags. Yes I did read it for the articles. I was trying to develop a sense of "worldly sophistication" or something like that.;^D Playboy covered the social phenomenon that was the DISCO-ERA with gusto. It was their heyday too.
The discotheque, Christophers, opened right around the same time as STUDIO 54. If the original owners are still alive-I'm sure they have some great stories to tell. Have not been in the club since the mid 1990s. I remember it as a place that played classic disco for the "SWINGERS" crowd. IT WAS NOT A SWINGERS CLUB. Rather it was a place where that crowd felt comfortable hooking up. Freakishly enough... Christophers is still open! Sitting there like some creature that survived a mass extinction event.
An argument can be made for landmarking the joint on the National Register of Historic Places. All the clubs that have come and gone and there sits CHRISTOPHERS.

Jan 22, 2011 | 4:57 pmThat's great that P&L might have been the first, but how are they doing now? Not sure of that post, as there sure wasn't a lot to read there on that "P&L were a disco before anywhere else". Was wondering if anyone had any good stories of Christophers or other clubs in that area.

Jan 22, 2011 | 1:12 pmYes, true true about Christophers. I started going there early 90's. There were just so many other places that I couldnt go to just that place back then. My fave bartender is still tending there, Sherrie. I met her tending bar in the Metro Room of City Limits around 1988. I live in Vegas now, but do still go to Christophers once a year when I visit So.Florida. Same door men work there too. It is a nice place and the music over all isnt bad. Long live the last of the So.Fla true NiteClubs. Any stories you may have of Christophers, or any other great clubs in that area...send me an email..cactus_tooth@hotmail.com Chuck...later.

Feb 04, 2009 | 3:37 pmChristopher's opened around 81-82,the original owner was Pete's brother of Pete & Lenny's,John Christopher.
As for being the first Disco in South Florida,I think not, Pete & Lenny's opened around 74,Backstreets as well, but to Christopher's credit,it is the last of the Mohicans from back then.

Was just watching "Bar Rescue" on TV and the guy on there reminds me so much of John Boinis that I googled him and found this page. I was the DJ at Christophers from 1984 to about 86? I opened after the big remodel in 84 and then left right after the big fire, which I believe was in 86. He hired me as an 18 year old not because I was a great DJ ( I wasn't), but because he wanted someone he could trust not to be coked up the whole time. He did love my idea of doing a classic disco set every night at midnight. Other DJ's mocked me but you could see the people pouring in at about 11:50 to catch the set.
I became a much better DJ by going to the clubs after we closed, in particular Backstreet and learning from Bob Rosenberg. (he founded the group Will to Power)
Don't know if John is still alive but he was one heck of a business man.
