Crown In Kendall
137th Ave. & SW 88th street Miami, Florida
The CROWN in Kendall was one of Miami's first DISCOS. At the time it was located near the EVERGLADES(since then the expansion of the city puts it in the middle of KENDALL). Run by the CROWN Liquor company, it was a fairly large club that had little competition being so West of the City.
Featuring a large bar with seats and a large sunken Dance Floor with a great sound system and a large variety of lights, including four strobe lights. Two technic 1200's, a Bozak mixer, Phase Linar equalizers and ten speakers, including two huge Bass Boxes at either end of the Dance Floor. It had daily drink specials, including a ten-cent drink night on Mondays. Wet T-Shirt contests on Tuesdays, Dance Contests on Thursdays and free admission during the week. The large deejay both had easy access to the patrons, and plenty of room for thousands of records.
The University of Miami provided a steady client่le, since there wasn't much choice. An extremely busy and popular club, it was called a "Pick-up Bar" or a "Meat Market" because the women usually out-numbered the men. The deejays varied the first two years, then Bobby Barea and Pete Denis arrived. The club took off, it became the place to be and where the music and mixing was the BEST in Miami. Pete brought "credibility" and the connections to bring in live, big name acts. CALHOON, CLOCKWORK, THE SUNSHINE BAND, JIMMY"BO" HORNE, FOXY and even the great GUESS WHO played there. Like most DISCOS, it was hurt by new clubs popping up everywhere, and the demise of DISCO. When both Bobby Barea and Pete Denis left, the club soon changed their format and became a "Cowboy"(a-la URBAN COWBOY) lounge with a Mechanical Bull and more. But from 1976 until 1980, this was the BEST club outside city limits. Today it is a KINKO'S.But many down here in Miami, partied hard at CROWN!!

COMMENTS ON THIS DISCO / DISCOTHEQUE / NIGHTCLUB
I went there once, when the deejay,Pete, was giving away records, I got "Rise" by Herb Alpert, in a clear vinyl!! I danced the night away, and Pete the deejay got everyone to sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me. Never forget it!
I was running the Florida Record Pool for Bo Crane, and A&M Records sent the pool 1000 copies of the clear vinyl RISE 12". After giving every deejay in the pool TWO copies, I gave away almost five-hundred 12"copies. It was a Friday night, and the place got jam-packed. The air-conditioning wasn't doing the job, so these records were used as fans, and by the end of the night, some became frisbees and ultimately, flying weapons. Never did that again!!
